Use ipod photo for video on external monitor

Apple support article ID: 300251 reads that "iPod photo supports displaying video on an external video source." Can someone explain how to put video on the ipod photo. I imported my video into iTunes 6 but then when synchronizing it doesn't seem to appear on my ipod photo.
Powerbook, i book, i book G4, G4 cube, ipod, ipod photo, ipod video   Mac OS X (10.4)

the ipod phot does not support viewing video on the ipod itself. the ipod photo lacks the chipset needed to play videos. There is no way around this fact. If you want to play video then buy the new ipod.

I use my camera for video and photos.  When I download my videos to my ipad1 using the camera connection kit, they will not play.
Does anyone know how I can make this work?

    Yvonne-
I haven't tried videos on my camera yet.  Do you use the Videos App to play them?  I don't think they will play in the Photos App.
If yours are in a format that is not in Vazandrew's list, you may need to sync them to your computer and convert them to M4V or MP4 format.  You can use a program like HandBrake to do the conversion.  <HandBrake>  Once converted, you can sync them back to the iPad and they should play.
This may not meet your needs, but the alternative appears to be getting a different camera.  I don't know of another Video App that might work.

  • Use iPod Photo on a larger display

I am looking to build a digital picture frame to hang on a wall. My hope is that I could build a large unit (17" display) for a lot less than I have seen them advertised. If I were to mount a 17" LCD screen within a case of some type and make it look like a frame, can I attach an iPod photo to the screen input so that the iPod provides the slideshow? This would eliminate the need for an OS or application in the frame and would allow me to use the iPod for music when not showing pictures.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
    David

One reason your frame will cost less than the ones you've seen advertised is that your image quality won't be as good. I believe the iPod photo only supports RCA video out. The Apple iPod AV Cable picture shows a cable with three jacks, probably RCA video out plus RCA stereo audio. It looks like it does basic NTSC video, approx. 640x480 if you're lucky. The quality ladder looks like this, from worst to best:
Analog NTSC video, RCA composite (iPod photo, older TVs)
Analog NTSC video, S-video (better TVs)
Analog VGA (CRT monitors, low-end analog LCDs)
Digital Video Interface (DVI) (High-end LCDs, iBooks, PowerBooks, Apple Cinema Displays)
Due to the iPod photo's video output, which is designed for a family room TV, you can't use just any LCD monitor designed for computer video input, since most of those take VGA or DVI. You will need to locate an LCD screen that has analog TV inputs that match the RCA jacks on the iPod photo AV cable. They do exist, I think Samsung makes a few.
Some do-it-yourself LCD picture frame projects use the guts and the video hardware of an old laptop. That achieves at least computer-quality video. I don't know what the expensive frames use but I guess it must be something laptop-like, such as DVI, showing far higher resolution and better color than analog NTSC.
I'm not telling you not to do it, I'm just setting your expectations. If you're happy with the way the iPod photos look on your TV, then you'll be happy with your project.
If there's another, better way to get video out of an iPod photo, someone can correct me.

  • What to look for in an external monitor

I am in the process of changing my editing system to handle hd. I am using a 24" imac 2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo. With my sd set up I used a Sony dv/dvcam deck and a JVC professional 13" Monitor. I am purchasing the new JVC gy-hm100u camcorder when it is released in April. I am somewhat confused about having an external monitor hooked up to my system for viewing my FCP projects. (1) What should I look for in the external monitor. Do I want a computer monitor or an HD TV? Once I purchase the external monitor/tv can I get rid of my SD JVC monitor all together. I don't want to spend a lot but I want to make sure I get a monitor with the right specs. (2) What happens if I want to use past dv footage in a new project shot in hd. I do a lot of corporate projects which require the use of old interviews as part of the new productions. Am I going to have an issue doing this? Thanks in advance for any help.

To view HD variants, you'll need a 3rd party card.
You are severely limited with an iMac. Your only real choice is a Matrox MXO driving a 24" Dell or older 23" Apple Cinema Display.
While you can use an AJA ioHD to drive a HDTV, you'll need to connect it via FW800. This is a problem as no other devices can be on the same bus and, since all firewire ports on an iMac are on the same bus, it won't work.
I would not dispose of the Standard Def monitor. If you work with SD material, you'll still need it. HDtvs are lousy devices for monitoring SD.

I'm using iPod touch for a year now. It was doing fine this morning but in the afternoon suddenly when I took it out of my bag, the screen was just black and it wouldn't turn on and stuff. So I thought it didn't have battery so I charged it didn't work. I plugged to the computer and it said iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before in can be used with iTunes.
Maybe my bag was little wet today but i don't think that is why.. since it wasn't that bed.. just some paper was wet and stuff..

When I use my IPhone 4S to view the Shaw Go Movie Central App when I am at home I only use WiFi which is automatic, I start watching a show and sometimes I will get a message like "you can not use your cellular for video playback" or something close to that. Then I received an email from Telus saying I had used my 3G instead of Wi-Fi  using 75% of my data. How can this happen when I'm on Wi-Fi at home? If it switched to 3G for some reason I should have been disconnected and not just transferred to 3G network using up my data. What is the fix for this??

It doesn't have to be that complicated, Verizon iPhones come unlocked, just tell VZ you're going on Holiday/Traveling and suspend the service, no need to pay for service if you're not going to be using it. Pick up local SIM cards in the countries of your choosing, pop them in, re-activate iMessage and you're set!
I recommend getting a SIM card from the Three network in England, they have great EU roaming rates and free like-home roaming in Italy.
Set your phone's region to match the country you're in, it'll save from some headaches when calling local/international numbers.
    To answer your questions,
    1. If you choose not to have a local SIM card, it is good to keep your phone in Airplane mode to save battery.
    2. Make sure the two iPhones have different names to reduce sync/restore issues.
    3. If husband has an iPhone also, you can chat with iMessage/Facetime, just give him heads up about the new number you'll have. Otherwise, use Whatsapp if he's got an Android. You can activate Whatsapp with your American number or the international number if you choose to get a SIM in Europe.
Also, Get the MagicJack app and/or Google Hangouts, both of those apps provide you with free calling to the USA and Canada using any internet connection. Google Voice is another good way to SMS across the seas.
Let me know if you need any more tips for iPhoning across the pond.

  • I am planning to buy mac mini 2.5Gzh. I will be using it mainly for video editing and I am planning to upgrade up to 8GB. Is it a good buy or should I try some other alternative.

I am planning to buy my next desktop. I will be using this mainly for video editing. I am not a professional video editor, I normally do home made videos for youtube, like tutorial, DIY project etc. I use Nikon D3100 camera and some basic green screen techniques as part of recording. So my basic video editing would be just syncing audio, editing videos to cut un-necessary frames etc and some basic effects. I am also planning to buy final cut pro.
So my question is should I buy the mac mini or Imac?

    Great advice from RRFS!
For video editing, do go for 16 GB of RAM ffrom OWC & consider the twice as fast i7 2.6 model, see Geekbench scores here..

No unless we are talkign about a late 2009 or 2010 27" iMac. Otherwise PC's don't have the correct outputs. Please look over Apple's FAQ on that subject (Target Display Mode) and you will see what I mean:

Hi sir im using fcp 7 for video editing in i mac, how can i edit mts files in fcp 7 without log n transfer, is their solution for fcp 7?

    >No, you are not right.
Going to question the biggest contributor to this forum?  (Yes, my ego is talking).  OK then...
    >Install the QT-Plugin, restart your Mac and you will be able to import and use .mts files in FCP 7.
Sure...yes, that makes it POSSIBLE to read the files natively in FCP...if they come from a Panasonic camera. BUT...just try working with those files.  Right away the system won't be nearly as responsive as it would if they were ProRes. First...there are no sequence settings for that format...so you'll have to use ProRes and have a green render bar.  BUT, that's no big deal.  The big deal is trying to work with the AVCHD format, which is VERY processor intensive...inside an application that doesn't like to work with much outside of the FCP editing codecs.
Is it possible? Sure? Will it work well...will you be as zippy and error free as if you converted to ProRes? Not by a long shot.  OH, but don't just take my word for it.  Go ahead...try it and see.  No skin off my nose...no waste of my time.  See how well this works.
I'm just here to relate real world working solutions to issues.  And yes, I did try that plugin, and boy, was editing a pain.

  • Use Time Capsule for video...

Has anyone used Time Capsule for video streaming?  How to connect to TV if it's pre-digital?

Time Capsule is not a Media Player.. it has zero ability to stream video. It has zero ability to do anything but hold files. It will sit there and hold your video files very happily .. but the dumb as a board hard disk and TC controls can do nothing with it.
You need a media player. And you need one that is able to be hacked or is not Apple. Apple work on itunes, although it is possible to use an Apple TV in the mix if you send video to it from ipad using airplay.
If by pre-digital TV it doesn't have hdmi input, then buy yourself an older media player that has component out.. there is no point buying expensive hdmi to analogue converters. You will eventually replace the TV and will definitely want to go digital. So get an Apple TV 1 that still works from ebay. And use one of the hacking methods. This has component video and you can also get composite out of it. And it will play files stored in the network. Other non-apple players will do the same. Just find one that is older design with component still but ATV1 can still work well. I use one with a crystal acceleration card running crystalbuntu firmware.

  • Can I use my iMac 2009 as an external monitor for a MacBook Pro

I will soon be getting a new MacBook Pro with Retina display. It has an HDMI port.
My current iMac 21.5" late 2009 model seems to have a port with what looks like a little monitor symbol, next to the firewire port. And the specs say:
    Graphics and video support
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory3
ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory
    Built-in iSight camera
Mini DisplayPort output port with support for DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI (adapters sold separately).
Support for extended desktop and video mirroring modes
Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to a 30-inch display (2560 by 1600 pixels) on an external display
Does this mean that port is just for video output to an external monitor? Or is is possible to also do video in?
On the one hand it feels like a waste to use a perfectly good iMac as a monitor. But the MacBook Pro actually has better specs, and so I was wondering if it is possible anyway.
    Thanks,
    doug

Thanks for your reply. After reading the article though, I'm still not really sure what the answer is. For example, you mention something that can be done, with some hurdles to go through, for 27" iMacs. Mine is a 21.5" iMac, but seems to have the same port you mentioned in the article. Or maybe it isn't. Anyway, I'm still not sure if it is possible after reading that. Interesting information though.
