Use layer as mask on other layer?

Hello,
I wonder if it is possible to copy a layer with its layer styles and use it as a layer mask on another layer.
Anyone know if its possible and how do I make it work?
Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes I want coupling of some sort but I guess your suggestion is enough to help me with the effect I'm looking for.
Im now working to solve my problem with another approach. Its not possible to apply some sort of effects on a group is it? I know I can put on mask on group but is it possible to apply styles as Gradient Overlay on a group?
Or I must merge layers before I can apply new styles? Or Rasterize if only one layer?
Thanks

  • Why use layer masks and adjustment layers?

I've been using PSE and CS successfully for years.
One thing I have never understood is: why use layer masks and adjustment layers, instead of simply creating a copy of the subject layer (the one I want to make changes to) and experimenting with that?  It's quick (Ctrl-J), I can do it as many times as I want, I'm not affecting my Background layer.  If I like the changes, I can keep them.  I can switch the copy on and off to compare with the Background layer.  I can do any type of blend or combination I desire.  I can insert Gradient layer(s), select any part of the copy and (Ctrl-J) create a new layer containing only the selected part.  I can adjust size, rotate, do anything.
It almost seems that "layer mask" and "adjustment layer" are mainly another layer of terminology; can anyone explain (preferably in 50 words or less) how they are intrinsically different from or superior to working with copies of the Background layer?  What can be done with them that can't be done simply using copies of the Background layer?

Here's a very basic example of the advantage of using a layer mask.
I have this picture of a sunflower and I want to convert the background to black & white, leaving just the flower in color.  I duplicated the Background layer, converted it to B&W and proceeded to use the Eraser to uncover the flower color. But I made a mistake and erased outside the flower.  There is no way to correct this other than deleting the layer and starting again.
Now let's use a layer mask on the B&W layer. Set the Foreground/Background colors to the defaults black/white. Using the Brush tool paint on the mask with black to reveal the color.  Here I painted too far, revealing a green leaf in the background.  No need to start over.  Simply switch to white and paint the excess to convert back to the B&W.
Tip: while painting you can type "X" to toggle between black and white.
You could also select the flower using the various selection tools and then fill the selection with black. If it turns out the selection was not 100% accurate you can then fine-tune the result by painting on the mask with black or white as necessary.

  • Photoshop CC 2014 hangs for nearly 15 seconds when using Layer Group Layers or Layer Palette Group from Layers commands.

Photoshop hangs for nearly 15 seconds when using Layer > Group Layers or Layer Palette > Group from Layers commands. NOT on creating new group and creating layers and drag-n-dropping layers into group manually in Layer Palette. Got a UI design file with nearly 800 layers and lot of groups. This doesn't occur in smaller files. Using OS X Mavericks, Photoshop CC 2014.2.2, Mid 2014 15-inch Retina Macbook Pro.
I understand that the solution would be just to cut the file into smaller files and design each UI view in a separate file but that would be painful. And it does not seem to be a very hard task to just group layers.

Does the document also have a lot of layer comps?
And can you post that document or send me a copy of it so we can see exactly why it is hanging?

Check your file and folder permissions. Moving stuff around may invalidate old security tokens for user-specific folders. You may simply need to reclaim them and "Take Ownership" in the Security tab --> Advanced of your file properties dialog.

  • Question about the CSS behavior when using layer 3 sticky and sticky table

    Hi everyone,
I have a question about the CSS behavior when using layer 3 sticky and sticky table is full.
If I configure layer 3 sticky and specify the inactivity timeout as below, how does the CSS
handle subsequent needed sticky requests ?
    advanced-balance sticky-srcip
    sticky-inact-timeout 30
    CSS document says that
    Note:
If you use the sticky-inact-timeout command to specify the inactivity timeout
period on a sticky connection, when the sticky table becomes full and none of
the entries have expired from the sticky table, the CSS rejects subsequent
    needed sticky requests.
My question is what is the next reaction by doing the CSS if the CSS is in the
    following condition:
when the sticky table becomes full and none of the entries have expired from
the sticky table, the CSS rejects subsequent needed sticky requests
Does CSS just rejects/drops subsequent needed sticky requests ?
    or
Does CSS does not stick subsequence requests to particular service but CSS forward
subsequence requests with round-robin basis ? which means if the sticky table is full,
the CSS just works round-robin load balancing fashion for subsequence requests ?
    Your information would be appreciated.
    Best regards,

    Hello,
There is a good document explaining this on Cisco web site
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/contnetw/ps789/products_tech_note09186a0080094b4b.shtml
It depends if the sticky-inact-timeout is used or not. If not, it's FIFO (the oldest entry in the sticky table is removed). If yes, the CSS will reject the next sticky request.

  • How to use the same mask, stencil, etc., for multiple layers? Photoshop equivalent of masked group?

Hi I spent more than half an hour to search manual, forums, and Internet and still can't find the answer. Please help!
For example, in a comp with 5 or more layers I want to use the same mask or stencil or what ever can hide areas of the layers 2,3, and 4 but layer 5 and any other eventual layers below should not be affected.

Pre-compose the layers you want to mask and apply a track matte to the pre-comp using the mask. Think of pre-composing as an equivalent of creating a layer group.
Use Set Matte effect on each of the layers you want to mask. This is easiest to do if you apply set matte once and then create an animation preset to apply to the other layers. Just get set matte to do what you want it to do on the first layer, Select Set matte in the ECW or in the Timeline, then go to Animation>Save animation preset. Then select all of the other layers you want to apply the set matte to and apply the preset.
Put the mask at the bottom of the layers you want to mask and enable the preserve transparency switch, then nest this group in the composition with the other layers.
Here's another tip. You could define a custom color for all of the layers you want to use the matt on, then use the custom color for a group selection. This may make things easier down the line.

  • Set operations using Rotobrush and Masks question

    Hi everyone
I have a relatively simple video clip of an object rotating.  Its shot straight on, no fancy moves or anything just rotating.  I've rotobrushed it and it looks good on a plain white background.  I'm animating a color shift such that as the object rotates its top 1/3rd part changes colors.  The area changing colors has crinkly edges but I've used rotobrush to isolate that as well, no problems there.  I duplicated the original clip, rotobrushed the duplicate to separate it from the background.  The original clip fades into pure white leaving the rotobrushed layer visible.  I duplicated the original again, rotobrushed the top 1/3rd in the same way.  I created a new layer with just a color adjustment effect and used the rotobrushed top 1/3rd as a track-mask for the animated color adjustment layer.
What I want to do is run a color gradient that shifts colors same as the top part but bleeds into the lower part that does not change colors.
So, is it possible to use a regular mask for the gradient and do a difference operation with the rotobrush of the object so the gradient only effects the area below the top 1/3rd which changes color ?  I know I can do it with regular masks, but I can't figure out how to do it with rotobrush masks.  I want to be able to do intersections and unions.
any pointers would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks
    -AK

Wrong thinking. You need to get away from masks vs. Rotobrush. In the end, all you do is create matte channels and therein lies the answer - any channel can be mangled with effects, possibly requiring to be extracted and isolated first by pre-rendering or pre-comping. RB and masks are just means to an end/ tools, nothing more.

  • When i use a clipping mask, my photo loses contrast. Any idea why?

I have one photo in a book that is driving me crazy. When I use my clipping mask, the photo inserts perfectly but loses its contrast and grays out terribly. I can't find any reason and it doesn't happen on any other photo using the same time of masks. Anyone have any ideas?

A screen capture of your Photoshop document showing layers palette and the layer in question targeted might be helpful.

  • How to use a path (mask) as a guidance path for an object?

    Hello,
I want to use a path / mask as a guidance line for an object. I know i can draw a mask, then cut the path parimeter and paste it into the the position, but that seems to come with all kinds of restrictions. For example; when i use that method, i can't make the object stop moving halfway trough the animation. Also i cant animate the object further along because the object starts to do all kind of weird things, like flipping horizontally / vertically.
I was wondering if there isn't just a function build in After Effects to track a path? Or a plugin?
Any help would be much appreciated
    Thanks in advance!
    Kind regards,
    Yori

My keyframing skills are pretty developed, but all rules i know regarding keyframing seem to go out of the window as soon as i paste the path into my position parameter... How come it flips the object for example?
What i went to do is: have my object follow a path, then stop, move up a bit, stop again, and then follow another path, but i can't seem to get that done. Also, when i have animated the first path, and i put another keyframe 12 frames further AE makes up some kind of extra path which is supposed to fill the gap between the last keyframe of the path animation, and the next keyframe. I really don't get it...

  • How to track a mobile object, masking the others?

    Hi
I work with spherical objects with a dimeter size equal to 100 micrometers. The objects are immersed in a fluid. They are movable, swimming in the fluid. I would like to track one of them, masking the others. Could somebody give me an advise how to do it?

    Hello,
sincu you did not attach any images it's hard to say, but check this out (a toolkit i've made, wrapping various OpenCV functions):
    https://decibel.ni.com/content/blogs/kl3m3n/2014/09/05/point-cloud-library-pcl-and-open-computer-vis...
You could use camshift/meanshift tracking based on hue-saturation histogram backprojection, or perhaps you could just try masking your image with backprojection only.
Spherical - since you are processing in 2D space, you can also try using Hough circle transformation to detect the circles and track them on subsequent frames using for example Euclidean distance from detected centers as your criteria.
Can you post a sample image?

  • Using rectangles to mask another shape?

How can I take a shape with a gradient like in the attached image, and make it so other shapes like the series of rectangles mask the gradient so the gradient only shows through the rectangles?
    Thanks.

You would use an opacity mask.
1 - Start with solid black rectangles instead. Group them by selecting all three and hitting cmdG.
2 - Position them over your gradient.
3 - Open the Transparency Panel by going to Window > Transparency. Select both the group of black rectangles and the gradient shape.
4 - Click the "Make Mask" button within the Transparency Panel and be sure the "Clip" and "Invert Mask" Boxes are checked.

  • Using Mattes and Masks to add real mouths to stop frame animation.

Hi all, I'm new to Final Cut Pro, having only really used Avid on PC in the past. I'm currently studying animation in my third year at university and I seem to have hit a stumbling block.
Basically I have created a short stop frame animation featuring various characters, movements and shots etc. From here I would like to be able to add 'real' mouths to those characters (by means of filming the lips/mouths of my voice actors in video format and super imposing them). So here's where it gets complicated (for me at least!).. Whilst I have read that it is possible to overlay sections of video upon original video using Mattes and Masks I haven't been able to find any instructions as to how I would be able to accomplish this with images which are moving around the screen (I.E. I would need to add a mouth to a character who is walking along a road, from left to right, and so I would need to be able to manipulate the location of the mouth so that it was always located over my characters face). I hope that my question makes some sense , I wont get my hopes up for a resolution, but this seems to be quite a busy board and I've managed to pick up a few tips from here recently so hey, worth a shot .

Forgot to mention that you'll have to keyframe the mask to move as well.
If the speach shots are not moving then you have definately made things much simplier for yourself.
For a simple example of keyframing. (Don't blame me if I confuse you further)
Load a clip in the viewer. (make sure that you have the canvas set to IMAGE and WIREFRAME.
Click the MOTION TAB in the viewer. Each of the Basic Motion attributes can be controled individually over a period of time. This is done by placing keyframes on the timeline to the right of each attribute.
Place the playhead (in the canvas) at the start of your clip, then press the round button in the Centre attribute section. The black dot added to the timeline is your first keyframe.
Now move the playhead further down the timeline and press the round button in the Centre attribute section again. Now click the imag in the Canvas and drag it to the right.
Now when you play the clip the shot will move left to right, one keyframe to the next.
That's it in a very small nutshell. And remember, almost any effect or motion can be keyframed.
