Use LR 2.7 without catalogs and collections?

I don't like to have LR or any programs making unused files from everything I do, I have a different way of working and find catalogs and collections extraneous. Can I turn them off permanently?

Hi Frank,
Maybe I can help here.  Please understand that I am not trying to talk you into using LR, but I came to LR recently having felt very much as you do, and I am now hooked on it.
Over the past couple of years, I looked at LR a few times (never tried it, just looked at it on adobe.com).  It looked complicated and the notion of having to import all of my images did not appeal to me.  I have my images organized in a folder structure that works for me, on both local and external hard drives.  I like the files where they are and mistakenly thought LR would require me to move them somewhere else and organize them according to how LR wanted them organized, not how I wanted them organized.  I did fine with PS, ACR and Bridge, along with Nikon Transfer, Nikon View and Bibble.  For my current workflow, the asset management features were not important to me -- after all, I like my current folder structure.
In early January, I embarked on a project to redo my website and settled on a program called SlideShowPro to make Flash galleries.  But guess what?  SlideShowPro is a plug-in for LR.  A friend agreed to show me his LR/SSP workflow, so I sat down next to him as he demonstrated how to import images, manage a Library, create Collections, Develop images and output Flash in the Web module.  We spent about 45 minutes together, after which I realized how stubborn and shortsighted I'd been in my previous appraisal of LR.  My "fear" of LR catalogs, libraries and collections disappeared, along with my misunderstanding of how LR organizes images (it does not require me to change my file/folder structure).  I now realize what a powerful tool LR is and it will likely replace much of my existing workflow.  It will not replace all of it, and what it does for me is irrelevant to you or others.  My point is simply this:  Give Lightroom a chance.  You may be surprised.
As others pointed out, LR does not make you copy or move your files anywhere.  They can stay just where you want them and had them in the first place.  (When you import, select "Add photos to catalog without moving.")  You can import all images in a given folder, or only some of them.  If you want to work on some files in LR and then delete them from LR, that's fine.  Those files will remain on your hard drive just where they were before you imported them into LR.  You are not working with dual copies of your files (one in LR, one not in LR).  LR simply "points" to your files as they reside where they do now in your file structure.  (If you do delete files from LR, you will of course lose your LR edits, but that might be OK for you.)
The one key element of the LR workflow that confused me at first was the difference between the Library and a Collection.  The key point to me that "unlocked" how the whole thing works is that you import into the Library then create Collections, drag files from the Library into your Collections and then work on them from within your Collections.  Sound complicate, but it isn't.  Give it a chance.
If I may suggest, go to Lynda.com and look at the intro LR videos.  Several of them are free.  They are excellent.
As Jeff pointed out, LR isn't going to change.  It may well not be the right program for your workflow, but please don't reject it for the wrong reasons.
You might wonder why in the world I'd take the time to reply here (I ask that myself sometimes).  I have no stake in Adobe or anything like that.  The subject of your post caught my eye and, as I said above, I came to LR feeling just the way you did, but I now understand and appreciate the enormous power of the program.  Give it a chance.

  • I D/L'd a trial version of LR 5 and lost all my catalog and collections in LR 4. What can I do to get them back?

Yesterday I D/L'd a trial version of LR 5.6 and during installation it seemed to be copying my catalog from my LR 4.4.  Now nearly all of my catalog and all my collections in LR 4 have disappeared.  What has happened to them andhow do I get them back.  The original photos seem to still be available in the myphotos directory on the computer, but without any of my lightroom editing.

Thank you so much!  I was freaking out that I had lost the whole
catalog and all my collections.  It would have been good if Adobe
support had been able to point me in the right direction with this
advice. They basically shrugged their shoulders and said tough
    luck!  I am not impressed!
    Thanks again, Anne

Talking caller ID is not a feature of the iPhone. If by "wacky apps" you mean the ones that make custom ring tones for each contact from their name, that's your best bet.

  • Catalogs and Collections

Windows 7 and CS4 Production Premium, LR3 and Acrobat X I have just received LR3.3 so this application is new to me. I currently use a non-Adobe application for my image database management. My images are primarily associated with genealogy work saved as uncompressed TIFF. At this time I have 5716 files in 68 folders. It is organized as follows: The highest level is by family surname (6 folders). Each of these folders contain 9 other sub-folders which represents image content; such as, individuals, siblings, family, etc. One of the highest level folders is used to contain images that have multiple family surname people in the image. In addition to these genealogy folders, there are other folders that contain images sorted by characteristics, such as, trips, scenic, trains, planes, etc. Using the current application terms, I maintain a catalog for each sub-folder. It is a thumbnail of each image in that folder with the file name and IPTC caption "headline" description. I make extensive use of IPTC metadata for each image: Headline, Description, Title, Keywords and Instructions. I want to fully understand the LR3 catalog(s) and collection(s) and smart collection(s) before I begin the changeover to LR3. Q1: Whenever I add a new image to my hard file storage folder, do I have to manually add it to the LR catalog? With my current application, when a folder is selected in that application, it looks for changes in the folder and new thumbnails are generated for the new files. Q2: A smart collection appears to built by keywords from the LR3 catalog and the non-smart collection must be manually built from the LR3 catalog...Correct? Q3: When I build a collection by "keywords" can portions of the file name structure be included (not placed in the keyword metadata) in the build criteria? Q4: Been thinking of using one LR3 catalog for my genealogy images and one for my non-genealogy images. Then use collections  (smart or non-smart to be determined) for each of my sub-folders. Sound reasonable? Q5: Can I do a search on the catalog via keywords without requiring a collection name defined? This would be a temporary assemblage of images only. Q6: Can I print the catalog or a collection with the file name and IPTC data (e.g., Headline) under each thumbnail?

    Di_paige, thanks for your response.
As noted in my previous response, I took the word "keyword" too literally. That confusion is now cleared up.
A clarification to your question on multiple surname handling. Currently, I have a set of hard drive folders for specific surnames and one other set for images having multiple surname content. I think that if I have one catalog for genealogy that a search by surname will turn up the applicable images in all the hard disk folders (assuming they have been cataloged).
The thought process of a collection per hard disk folders is mostly governed by the desire for printing a document (want to avoid the term catalog) for each such hard disk folder when a person requests such information. Doing so at this level reduces the print size of the document. Now as I get into this with LR maybe it is not necessary if I can simply print a set of images based on file names (with wild cards) and IPTC keyword content.
Thanks again for your helpful answers.

  • How to move entire catalog and collection from old PC with PSE 4 to new PC with PSE 9

I have read various answers regarding upgrading to new PC's using newer versions of PSE
. All solutions seem to differ slightly. Can anyone give me a good path to follow for upgrading from PSE 4 on old windows XP PC to PSE 9 on a new Win 7 PC
Any help would be greatly appreciated

    I did it like this:
copy all your photos from your old PC to exactly the same folder in your new PC.
Install the trial version of PSE9 to your new PC. Copy the old catalog from your old PC to your new PC. In the new PC choose File/Catalog/Convert/Find more catalogs, locate the folder where you copied the catalog, choose Convert. And there it is! Everythingworks beautifully!
Of course I'm not 100 % sure was it exactly like this what I did just half an hour ago. But I had exactly the same problem as you: PSE4+old PC --> New PSE + new PC (I wanted to have all the old tags to be in use also in the new PC and new version of PSE9).
Some more advice: to locate the catalog in your old PC: start PSE4, choose File/Catalog/New and you'll see on the screen the folder where old catalog is located (in my PC it was: c:\Documents and Settings\All  Users\Application Data\Adobe\Catalogs - file named "My catalog.psa").
    Good luck,
    MattiS

  • Multi user catalog and how to make it - use a checked out system

Lots of people want or need a Multi user ability in lightroom here is one way to achieve multi-user catalogs by using a check-in check-out system.
The Catalog would open normally upon a second user opening LR would then ask to switch to multi-user mode.
Once in multi user mode lightroom would lock-out images, collections, or folders by a checked-out for editing system.
By checking-out images, collections, or folders: files would be unavailable to other users until edits are saved, and the images, collections, or folders are checked-in.
This check-in check-out system would need a global check-in feature in case someone forgot to check in an image, collection, or folders (global check-in could be admin level). Word documents, CAD files, etc, use a similar lock-out/read only system for the files. Since, we wouldn't want to bloat the files with programing to lock out the files, this would have to be added to the catalog and managed by the catalog.

    I googled that (easy when you know what the answer is) and yes the ScheduledThreadPool retains threads for re-use, so you have to check that all threads are done and then shutdown() the scheduler... like this:     while (!future.isDone()) {
              try { Thread.sleep(10); } catch(InterruptedException e) {}
         scheduler.shutdown();

  • Previews missing at catalog and drive level.  Unable to use filters at this level.  Missing folders.

Using LR4 (not 4.1) and Win7 Home Premium.
Catalog had been upgraded from LR3 and  LR4 catalog was working fine until now. I've been using LR since the begining.
Two problems, probably related.  106K photos over two drives, almost 3Tb.
At the catalog level, there are no previews.  Normally previews of all 106K photos would be displayed. Message is "Click the "import" button to begin."  Filter function does not work Message:  "No photos match the filter"
At the drive level, there are no previews.  Message is "No photos in selected folder" Filter function does not work Message:  "No photos match the filter"
At the folder level, everything is fine, except two folders give the same message "No photos in selected folder"  Filter function does not work in these two folders: Message:  "No photos match the filter"  14K photos between the two bad folders
Dozens, hundreds, of other folders and subfolders are fine. Filter function works fine at folder and subfolder level.
Collections are fine, including photos in the two folders giving the mesage "No photos in selected folder"
    What I've done:
    uninstalled and reinstalled LR4 twice.
    Downloaded and installed clean LR4.
    Same problems
Tried to import the missing folders.  Won't import because they're already in the catalog.  Won't import even if I uncheck "Don't import suspected duplicates"
Exported as a catalog one of the "No photos in selected folder" folders.  It appeared to create a viable catalog with previews, search filters, etc.  I edited a few photos with no problems.  Although it did give a message saying several hundred previews were missing.  But they seem to be there anyway.
Deleted the folder from the catalog and imported from catalog the working folder catalog that I just created.
    Same problems.
Exported as a catalog  the other "No photos in selected folder" folder.  Same result as the first bad folder.  I.e. It appeared to create a viable catalog with previews, search filters, etc.  Although it did give a message saying several hundred previews were missing.  But they seem to be there anyway.
Haven't done anything with this second folder catalog.  Intriguing, the same message about missing previews.
The actual files and *.xmp files are in the bad folders.
    Now what?

Discovered a thread in this forum.  Known problem solved by 4.1 beta.  Upgraded to LR4.1 and problem solved.

  • Data collection without duplicates and ordered

    Hi!
what is the data set (or collection object) we have in java that can order a setof objects using a comparator, or default ascending, and that doesn't allow duplicate values in it. To be precise I need a combination of HashSet and TreeSet.
    Can any one help me.
    Thank you

    Hi.
A TreeSet does what you've described. You mention that you need a combination of HashSet and TreeSet though, so what does TreeSet do that you don't like or what doesn't it do that you want?

  • How can I select 5-star photos in one catalog and use them to create a new catalog

I've been using Lightroom since LR1. I now have several LR 5.5 catalogs generally organized by year and camera. I want to create a new catalog which will contain my best from each catalog. BUT, I don't want to remove the photos from their "home" catalog. The photos will continue to reside in both their original catalog and in the new "Portfolio" catalog. The easiest way to approach this is to filter photos in catalog "A" by rating, select all 5-star photos and create a new catalog containing just the selection. I don't want to export or remove them from their catalog or move them on disk. I want them to appear in BOTH catalogs. Since Lightroom is built on a database that merely points to image files, it seems like this should be possible.
I realize I can create an empty catalog and select File->Import from Another Catalog... , then locate the photos one at a time by name and location clicking the import checkbox - tedious is an understatement when you have several 10's of thousands of photos.
    Any ideas?

    jimfeet wrote:
Yes, that's an option I've considered. But as with any database, size is inversely proportional to speed - larger database equals slower performance. LR 5 is much better than earlier versions in this regard but when you reach 100,000 images you can feel it.
This is incorrect. I accept that you think the database is getting slower, but the database (and really all databases) are designed to work pretty much the same regardless of the number of records, except for perhaps searching through the entire catalog. We have seen in this forum people who are now editing larger RAW files than a few years ago, they see it is slower, and decide it is the size of the database, rather than the size of their photos.
What aspects of Lightroom are slow? If it's scrolling and displaying the previews and searching, then it might be the database. If its displaying images in the Develop module, it is NOT the database at all.
Have you taken steps to improve the performance of the database, such as Optimizing it regularly? have you tried these performance tips: FAQ: Experiencing Performance related problems in Lightroom?

  • HT201335 Can i use airplay with the apple tv and airport express without an internet connection? Basically Set it up as a closed network?

I was told I could set a local network with the airport express, apple Tv, and my iPad to stream videos or pictures to a TV for a presentation.
No internet connection is available at the location.
Is that possible? Or do I need to access itunes homeshare with an internet connection to make this work?
I've set it up at home where I have an internet connection and it works fine but I want to move the setup to my church for a class. The data I'm using is stored on my ipad.
I know I can do this wired with the HDMI adapter but would like to do it wireless.
    Thanks for any help!

Ok so we now have a solution to the problem.   A friend of mine came round to work this out with me last night and we were able to get it working, but it is not as easy as I had hoped.  Fisrtly we plugged the airport express into my router using the ethernet cable  (for this I am using an Airport Express Base Station") and in airport utilities selected the airport express.  In edit, we then gave the airport express a new range of IP address which did not conflict with any of the other applications that I have already assigned.  We also named the Airport Express with a distinguishable name.  We then waited for the changes to be registered then unplugged the Airport Express from the router.  I then plugged my AppleTV via HDMI into a tv to test it and selected the new wifi network with the new Airport Express distinguishable name.  I was able to watch a video that I have on my ipad directly on my tv without being connected to the internet, and was able to play Airplay presentations.
No the easiest solution, and certainly not something that anyone at Apple has talked me through in my lengthy conversations with them at Applecare.
    Hope this helps.

here is a cheaper solution than camera kit and a lot easier if you have WIFI available.
I use the PhotoSync APP (I think its a $1.99) will transfer videos and photos over WIFI to any other IOS device or even PC/MAC. Great app since I like doing video and photos on my IPHONE and transfer to IPAD2 without synching through computer or doing cloud based storage.
You can even send photos/videos from your MAC/PC to your IOS devices that way too. Makes it so much easier.
