Use MacBook as Amp with e-guitar

Hi,
I'm using Garageband '09 with an iStudio link cable that connects my e-guitar (Epiphone) to the line-in/out on my MacBook pro 13" (mid 2009).
My goal is to use my MacBook as an amp, i.e. get the guitar sound out of my MacBooks speakers with some effects (in real time).
What are the setting I have to apply (I suppose I have to switch the line-in/out to just line-in and I've already read something about turning "monitoring on")?
Thanks for helping!

Yes, you'll have to turn monitoring on - go to the guitar track's info pane by pressing cmd-I. If you're happy with the speakers' sound, fine - I don't think you'll be able to connect to better speakers through the line out since it's impossible to use your in/out jack as input and output simultaneously - but maybe someone else can help you with that.
Your main problem will be that GB has some serious latency - the sound being delayed during the processing. This is hard to control and sometimes makes it almost impossible to keep your timing.

So I just bought a used MacBook from Amazon with OSX 10.5.8.  I am trying to install new software and operating system, but I don't have the passwords to the Users set up in the computer.  What do I do?

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Reset Password. After resetting the password use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for startup and restart.

CCan I use MacBook pro A1211 with external monitor, screen has died but computer seems fine

Hmm seems like this model has DVI out. You could just plug a standard DVI monitor into that. Or use the DVI connector (VGA supported with included adapter; S-video and composite video supported with optional adapters) adapter that came w/ your machine.

  • Guitar amp with 'classical guitar' sound

    Hi,
I'm using the Fender Squier Strat usb to record with Logic Pro X. Guitar amps don't include an amp that would simulate 'classical guitar'. Is there? Anybody's advice would be helpful. I know there is a patch to play classical guitar via a keyboard. But I'm a classical guitar player who would like to use his USB Strat to record classical guitar stuff. Thanks in advance.

I think, tongue-in-cheek Pancentre is making a valid point that you're not going to get that 'classical' sound too easy you need a warm acoustic sound going in.  However, let me explain:
Logic (In fact 99% of music software) can be expanded via plugins.  On the Mac/OSX these are called Audio Units.  2 Of the big players for guitarists is Native Instruments (NI) Guitar Rig, and IK's Amplitude.
Guitar Rig is an all-in-one solution which can be used with a guitar pedal controller which controls the software.  It's got tons of options, standard presets and loads more scattered around the internet.  Anything from experimental, through to Jazz and Death metal you can get from that, it's very flexible.
Acoustic emulation/simulation is basically a series of effects and EQ's in Guitar Rig/Amplitube/Logic which will provide you with an acoustic/warm sound.  Basically, it's job is to raise the low frequencies and remove the mids (At least that's how i have to process mine) and place a bit of delay/reverb on the high frequencies to create space.  But you never will recreate that wonderful sound of a classic guitar 'pushing air' by plugging an electric in and running it through an acoustic simulator.
The characteristics, fret noises etc. Just won't be there.
If you're just wanting to have some fun, jam and make a few tracks for your own enjoyment they're still pretty good for that.  But you will have to adjust some effects settings, purely as guitars, pickups, strings etc. can all cause the sound to differ.  So don't think you can just get away with selecting a preset each time.
Personally, i think it's part of the enjoyment coming up with a sound which helps you play, and sounds 'right'.  These plugins, and guitar simulators are so straight forward too, they've invested a lot of development into making them act like the real thing.

I bought a used MacBook Air that came with an administrator password, and someone's name in the upper right corner, and I cannot change it. He didn't have the password either.

Here's how to reset the password.  Once in, I would reload Lion and start fresh.

    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

  • Are used MacBooks covered with Apple warranty in 1-year from initial purchase?

    Hello!
Short story: Can someone tell me if used MacBooks are covered with Apple warranty if it is still within 1-year warranty period?
Long story: Purchased a MacBook on Amazon that was marked as "used" but item arrived absolutely new, factory sealed. Activated it 5th June. Warranty coverrage info on Apple page says it IS coevered with warranty and it complies a warranty rule to have an invoice. Am I right that I have this item covered wtih warranty? Can I activate an Apple Care for this MacBook?

Yes, i did check the coverage on the like stated above and it says that item has warranty coverage for 1 year (till 5th June 2014).
But maybe there's a catch concerning used items or the second owner. I searched the Apple Warranty agreement but didn't find anything concerning "used" or "new" - only that I must have an invoice or receipt.
I have some doubts becvause device condition stated in invoice as "used". (But the device arrived abolutely new - package was still in factory shrink wrap.)
    Why all this matters:
I'm going to purchase an Apple Care Protection Plan, but I have doubts that it is eligible for it because item bought was stated as "used" (though it was new in fact)

  • Pre-Amp with MS-2?

I just purchased a Marshall MS-2 micro amp to record electric guitar into Garageband. I plugged the headphone out into the line in on the Mac and nothing. No green level lights. I got no sound at all. I have used my regular Fender practice amp to record electric guitar, but was hoping to be able to use this convenient little desktop amplifier.
Any ideas why it won't work?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks.
I had been using my regular amp with success as recently as yesterday, so I know it isn't a settings issue. I checked the cords and they are all fine. It is just for some reason there is no signal from the micro amp output to the GB track. I checked that the monitor is on etc.
The whole reason to get this MS-2 was to avoid dragging my big amp out all the time in my tiny flat. What a bummer...

  • Does garageband use different amp sounds &effects I can use with my guitar?

I know I can plug my guitar into my iMac and use garageband to record music, but does Garageband also have amp models and effects that I can use with my guitar? Can I just plug my guitar into my iMac and make music with effects and sounds for my guitar?

I want a white Custom w/Gold but money is so tight lately... my Imac has become my main amp lately - I have 4 amps (2 vintage tube amps and 2 SS) but most of the time when I'm "wankin" alone I plug into my Imac - I have oodles of plug-ins and use Logic Express a lot more lately but still enjoy Garageband's simplicity...
I actually have ran my SOUND OUT into a small Fender Frontman and used it for my computer speakers (gives ya' more bite than a standard subwoofer system) - I'm trying to find another Frontman 15R on Ebay so I can do STEREO FRONTMEN - the Frontman has nice cleans and with the added reverb it sounds kinda nice...
Bucky email me - I 'll explain some other stuff about GB - [email protected]

  • I am unable to get sound using apogee jam with my guitar. I can see input levels but no sound. What step am I missing?

I think I have done something wrong. I used my Apogee Jam on a guitar project with several audio tracks in Logic Pro 9. And while the Apogee Jam still was connected, I switched to another project with only instrument tracks (synths). I forgot to change the "Built In Input". After I did this, my guitar sounds like crap when I try to use Apogee Jam in the same guitar project, or also if I create a new project. I use Guitar Rig 5 (Native Instruments) as my guitar plug-in. But the guitar sounds strange even if I don´t assign Guitar Rig.
    Can somebody help me?

Just buy the proper adapter cord, such as MiniDisplay port to HDMI for example.  Plug it in and it will be automatically recognized.  Use System Preferences > Displays to set options.
The display can Mirror your primary desktop or Extend the Desktop.

I have 2 Macbooks each with an account for me and one for my wife. I use one Macbook logged in with my account and my wife uses the other Macbook only logged in on her account. We both make regular time-machine back-ups each on a separate external disk. Is it possible to update her account on my macbook using her external disk without overwriting my stuff on the same Macbook and vice versa?

Time Machine does not do individual accounts. It records the complete drive. So if you were to use her TM backup on your Mac it would make your Mac just like hers. Both yours and her account on your MAC.
Just copy the missing files over from her Mac to yours. If there are differennt programs on each then they would need to be installed on both.
