Use Macbook Pro as keyboard/display combo for desktop CPU?

What I want is the power and upgradability of a desktop, but I want to be able to work from my recliner, as I am accustomed to doing with my Macbook Pro. I would love to be able to hook up my Macbook Pro to a desktop (ideally via wireless, but a cord would not be a deal-breaker) and use it like a keyboard/display combo. I've searched and searched but never have found anything I'd consider "definitive" on this, though there does seem to be quite a bit of general interest in lazing about on on comfortable furniture to work. Do any of you know if this is possible? If so, how?
PS: PLEASE no lectures on how working from a recliner leads to back problems
Thanks!

No. Target DIsplay Mode is only available on the 27-inch iMacs, and for those with a Thunderbolt port, the video output must come from a Thunderbolt source.

How can i copy files from one external hard drive to another using macbook pro with retina display?

That's odd - if you open Disk Utility (Applications->Utilities) and select the disk(s), how are they formatted? If you're only going to be used with your Mac, they should be formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".

  • Is there a key on the MacBook Pro to toggle display options for a projector

I have had some difficulty getting my InFocus projector to consistently work correctly with my MacBook Pro. Is there a key on the MacBook Pro that toggles the options for projector display? There was one on my last MacBook and my previous PowerBook.
    Thanks -
    Dudley Warner

No, there is no longer a key to control external display modes (it's F7 on my 1st gen MBP, but the option was removed along with the embedded numeric keypad in the Early 2008 models). There's not a substitute keyboard shortcut (with the exception of installing a macro player like Keyboard Maestro). Your main option is System Preferences > Displays (as stated, ticking the box to show Displays in the menu bar provides a helpful shortcut).

  • Using MacBook Pro as a display for external media via Thunderbolt/Displayport

How do I enable Thunderbolt display input via HDMI to use my MacBook Pro late 2011 as a display for other media? I have HDMI connected by a rocketfish adaptor and their company website Q and A seems to indicate this should work.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You cannot use a MacBook Pro as an external display. To do this, you need that Target Display mode is included in the firmware, and this is only available on iMacs.
However, you can still use your MacBook Pro as an external display for another Mac by using ScreenRecycler

  • Is the 15inch entry level MacBook pro with retina display available for purchase instore?

I know that if the buy option says I stock you can pick it up from the store. But has anyone bought the new. MacBook pro retina display instores??
I going to buy one very soon, and I'm confused why the apple website says shipping is 3-4 weeks. Is that only for customizations??

MacMall (online) has the base model in stock, I believe. And various users around here have found the in Apple Stores, at Best Buy, etc. Amazon also had some in stock the last time I looked.

Currently i own an xbox 360 Slim 4G model. I also own a copy of a game that needs about 16g of memoery so i cant store it on the xbox. Wondering if its possible to connect my xbox to my macbook pro and store the game on the computers hd and have the xbox 360 recognize it and still function through my xbox and tv. • Is the MacBook Pro with retina display good for gaming?

I was looking at the MacBooks and I was thinking about the one with retina display.  I wanted to know if it was good for gaming also. Just something like skyrim or maybe WOW.

If you're not a heavy gamer, then yes it will be great.
I play WoW at full retina display with the performance I noted above - if you have trouble, you could always revert to 1440x900 just for WoW and Skyrim.
I know WoW lets you choose a resolution within the game so nothing wo worry about outside - not sure about Skyrim but maybe so?
I am a light gamer. I used to have a 2011 MBA, just an off the shelf model with no upgrades, and it played WoW very well for its size etc.
An iMac would be great too. For the price of a rMBP you could go for an iMac for games/home use and a base spec MBA for working on outside...?
However iMacs are pretty outdated atm - not allowed to say much on here but might wanna wait for something to happen...

  • I can't use Macbook Pro's keyboard when the Internet is connected

This is the strangest issue I have ever encountered and it just started happening this morning.
When I have my internet connection (WiFi) turned on it refuses to recognize my keyboard. The trackpad on my laptop screws up too. I left-click and it acts as if I've right-clicked (context menu becomes visable). I've restarted numerous times. I have all the current updates for my OS (running Lion), have run the Disk Utitlity and all that.
I went to the Genius Bar this morning but my next appointment isn't til 7pm! In hopes that it'd start working properly, I opened my laptop in a Starbucks and didn't connect to any networks. Poof! No issues! Then when I tried to connect using WiFi it began acting nuts again. I tried connecting with my mobile hotspot on iPhone and it doesn't react strangely to that. Only when it's the regular WiFi.
If anyone has any suggestions on resolving this issue I would be most grateful. I have a lot of work to do today (off-site graphic design contractor) and I cannot do it without a laptop connected to the internet (I have to download about 6GBs of files and my ATT bill is gonna look insane).

Yes LS needs a update to work with the changes in 10.6.8, so does Parallels.

Apple does make these, but they are not sold everywhere.  Where are you located?
Nobody in these forums represents Apple or any store, so to find out whether you can buy a particular product you will need to contact stores directly yourself.  In the US you can sometimes get unusual keyboards by talking to an apple retail store and asking for a special order.

  • Is there a way to digitize audio using the headphone input on the 15-inch (late 2013) Macbook Pro with Retina display?

I'd like to digitize audio from a minidisc player into my 15-inch (late 2013) Macbook Pro with retina display, but can't see a way to change the internal mic input.  I understand that previous MacBooks allowed the headphone jack to double as a mic input, but mine doesn't seem capable of switching.  I've tried using a mini to mini cable, with no luck, and also tried using a headset splitter adapter (3.5 mm 4-pin to 2x3-pin 3.5 mm headset splitter adapter from Amazon) because I read that that would allow me to plug in headphones and input audio.  But in both cases, the only "input" available in my sound preferences is the built-in internal microphone.  Am I missing something?  Is there a way to digitize audio through the headphone jack?

Not likely. headphone jacks are usually output only devices unless specifically stated to support input, and even then, it may not be audio input that they support, but merely control input for volume and such.
You can get a USB audio input instead. i.e:

  • How to Install Windows 8.1 on MacBook Pro with Retina Display Using Boot Camp?

    Hello,
I own a MacBook Pro with Retina Display and was wondering how do I install Windows 8.1 without an optical disc drive? I have bought the full version of Windows 8.1 and would like to partition it on my MacBook Pro. Could someone please help me out by posting step-by-step procedure or a video on how to do it? It is my first time partitioning the Windows operating system and would like to clarify with the community on this before I install it.
Thanks in advance for those who have helped!

Windows 8.1 is not yet supported by Boot Camp. The best way currently to install Windows 8.1 is to use a virtual machine like Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox. Installation instructions are on the Parallels, Fusion, and VirtualBox site.

  • HT204135 Hi! Okay I am about to purchase a printer for my MacBook Pro w/retinal display. I would like to know which

Can someone tell me which printer would be most compatible and easiest to install?
I have never owned a wireless printer and feel intimidated by the very thought of connecting a printer to my MacBook Pro with Retinal display and Mountain Lion.
I feel overwhelmed by the info on the net. Thank you from a concerned senior citizen.

  • On my MacBook Pro with Retina Display, Why does the "USB Devices Disabled Unplug the device using too much power to re-enable USB devices" keep coming up after I unplugged the usb device?

On my MacBook Pro with Retina Display 15", that I purchased a few weeks ago, started coming up with the following message on my desktop:
"USB Devices Disabled Unplug the device using too much power to re-enable USB devices".
I unplugged the device and the message still keeps coming up.
This is what I have done so far to troubleshoot:
I shut down the laptop. When booting up I pressed the command+option+p+r at the same time. It comes up with a menu to reinstall OSX, Get help online, Run Disk Utility, etc. I choose the disk utility and repair the disk and then restarted.
The message keeps popping up and I can't seem to get rid of it. Why does the message keep popping up even though I don't have any devices hooked up to the laptop at all? Any help to reenable my usb ports and get rid of the messaage would be helpful.

I talked to Apple Support and we at least stopped the bleeding, a little bit. These are the troubleshooting steps I did before I contacted Apple Support:
    1. Reinstalled OSX
    2. Restore the last known good Time Machine Backup.
This did not fix my issue, so I called Apple Support and they told me this:
    1. Turn Power off.
    2. Wait 15 seconds.
    3. Plug in Magsafe adapter.
    4. Wait 15 seconds.
    5. Hold down the Shift+Option+Power Button for 20-30 seconds.
    6. Turn Power back on.
Ok, this stopped the bleeding a little, but as soon as I plugged in a Apple USB Superdrive
and a Apple Mini Displayport to VGA Adapter. This "USB Devices Disabled" pop-up pops up like every 30 minutes now. At least, it is not constantly popping up after I close it, so I guess it will do for the temporary. Going to contact Apple support, later, though to see what else can be done.
