Use macbook pro optical drive with mac mini

Just received my new mac mini. Wonderful.
I would like to keep my old 2006 Macbook Pro 2,2 and use it as a DVD drive. It is running 10.7.5.
Would you please give me some advice and pointers?
Also, I have a few files on the old MBpro I would like to transfer to the Mac Mini. What's the best way?
Finally, what else could I do with the old machine? It was a fine computer, and it feels sad being underused.
Thanks,
K.

Amazing.
It took just a few minutes to find answers to my questions. Congratulations for such a user friendly OS.
I just had to connect everything and open the finder on my mac mini.
So, here is what I found:
- "Remote Disc" is the name of the feature to share the optical drive
- not every type of disc is supported though. Why? How can I watch a DVD on my 27'' display?
- the MBP files show up in the finder, i can transfer them
- using "share c=screen" I can see my MBP screen. Should I use that feature to watch a DVD on the 27'' display?

check that your current Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Specs:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If it does... then you need to Purchase the Snow Leopard Disc and Install it.
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
Would Also Recommend that you do a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive Before attempting any Major Upgrade...
By far the easiest way to make a Backup, is to use something like
    SuperDuper  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/

  • Can I still use Appleworks 6.2.9 with Mac Mini 2012?

Can I still use Appleworks 6.2.9 with Mac Mini 2012?

Yes, MlchaelLAX, the KVM switch allow one to use one monitor, one keyboard, and one mouse between two computers.  It has been so long that I'm not sure how to find the MODELS to the G4 and G5. Unless you mean what makes the Mac tick.  The G5 is a dual 2GHz PowerPC, with 2 GB DDR SDRAM.  The G4 is a bit slower, will look tomorrow.
I want/need a newer Mac model because unlike the days before OS X, all software was included as the newer OS were added, not so today.  I'm still using Tiger because I still use a couple programs from the old days.  When I eventually purchase a new model, I will have to buy all new software.  That's find if one has plenty of money and wants to learn everything from scratch, but I'm hanging on as long as I can.
I tried TenFourFox, but it didn't allow video, of course since I tried Michael's suggestion, the video might not be an issue.  So far, every thing works the way it should.
I have a lot of faith in Mac users, their loyalties to Apple is what kept Apple floating when many thought it would sink.  These folks are survivors; I only wish the apple people on the top appreciated that loyalty today, but I guess things are too good.
Thanks to all for you kindness.  Tomorrow I will show my husband how to remove his yellow threat on his G4.  If anyone can answer any other questions, please know I will keep viewing this post.

I bought a used macbook pro that came with xcode, this means I can develop Apps but to publish in App Store needed pay developer fees? Or must pay these fees from now?

All you have are the basic tools. Without a paid program in your name, you cannot distribute apps to the store.

  • Can I use macbook pro install Disk with macbook?

    Hi everyone,
I have a macbook and macbook pro, I had to reinstall system after harddrive went on the macbook. I can't find my macbook restore disks/installation disks. Would I be able to use the macbook pro install disks with macbook?
    Much appreciate your help.
    Mo

It might work but it's risky. The MBP installation disks may well not contain the right drivers for the MacBook. It would be better, if at all possible, if you contacted Apple tech support and asked for a new set of disks for your MacBook. They'll send you a set for a reasonable fee. If you can't wait, perhaps there's an Apple Store or other Apple dealer near you that would have a set you could borrow in-store to do the reinstallation.

  • Can I use my Macbook Pro to access my Mac Mini wirelessly?

On my Macbook Pro's Finder, I see my Mac Mini listed under Shared. How difficult is it to be able to access the Mac Mini from the Macbook? I would like to be able to save files to the external drive that is attached to the Mac Mini.
    Thanks!

Enable file sharing on the Mini, then click on it.

  • Do I upgrade my MacBook Pro, or get a Mac Mini?

    Hello!
    I'm am a University student (studying Graphics/Design).
    At the moment, I have a MacBook Pro - although I bought it in April 2010, I believe it's the 2009 model? - The 13" 2.26Ghz, 2GB memory, and 160GB model.
The thing is, it's slow. I need to use bigger applications like Aperture - when I'm editing photos, I slide all the little sliders to how I want to edit the photo, yet it takes forever to show the changes on the photo which is no use.
Another thing, I work better on a desktop computer because of how I'm not looking down to look at the screen, and it's a much bigger, clearer screen! Like on the 21" iMacs at uni, in Photoshop, it's great because all the little windows/palettes you have open, you can just throw to one side of the screen, yet on a 13" screen, they're just annoying.
    But the question is...
    - Do I keep the MacBook Pro - upgrade it's memory, and get an external monitor/keyboard/mouse for it?
    - Do I sell the MacBook Pro whilst I can get more money for it compared to if I sell it this time next year and get a Mac mini ?
I'm a first year Uni student and have never took my laptop into Uni at all.
It's just that some people are telling me to keep the MacBook because it's portable and if I needed to take it in to Uni, I could. Yet on the other hand, If I got a Mac mini, say I got around £600 for the Macbook, I'd have extra money after purchasing the Mini for a display etc, instead of losing out on money by buying an external monitor for the Macbook.
What do you think I should do? What's the more sensible option in terms of how long things will last and that?
    Cheers!
P.S. Sorry for the essay of a question... and does anyone know how I can change my display name? I don't use that email anymore, but I'd rather it not be there!

What do you think I should do?
    Get the Mac Pro.
The top-end iMac is a powerful machine by consumer and even professional standards, but a fully-upgraded Mac Pro is practically ostentatious in the amount of raw processing power it can wield. Professional consumers in areas like 3D rendering, video editing, and other extremely processor-intensive applications surely appreciate the much greater power the Mac Pro can afford them.
    Customization:
The Mac Pro stomps the iMac in the customization department. Folding down the Mac Pro's side door gives you easy and almost instant access to its innards, and virtually every component is simple to swap out. Hard drives in particular are extraordinarily easy to swap in the Mac Pro.
Contrast that with the iMac, where the RAM is essentially the only user-serviceable component. Swapping out the hard drive on an iMac is a harrowing procedure that requires removing the entire front display -- not something you're going to want to do more than once, if ever.
I added cards to add more USB Ports, more FireWire Ports, Video inputs and a dual eSATA card.
I also like the 30 inch display.
(Sounding like Darth Vader.) "You don't know the POWER of the Mac Pro."

  • Using iPad and LogMein app with Mac Mini Server

Hello everyone, I'm new to the community and I would like to ask your opinions on something I'm considering.
I'm currently using a MacBook Air beyond its capabilities. I'm running a dual system via Parallels since some of my work programs are Windows based.
I'm planning to pass the MacBook Air down to one of my employees but I'm stuck on what I will purchase to replace it.
I like the new MacBook Pro, but I don't like the $2200+ price tag. So what I'm considering is buying a Mac Mini Server ($900) and setting it up in my office with a HDTV as a monitor because I use construction design programs and the laptop screen is just too small for large drawings. The Mac Mini also has 1TB storage vs 256GB on the MacPro. I already have an external disk drive so that's no issue either.
Also, since I still need mobile convenience, I'm considering downloading the "LogMein Ignition" app ($130) and using this to log in remotely with my iPad for complete access to all of my files and programs.
What are some pros and cons I should consider before making this move?
Thanks in advance for the help!
    Kevin

    > If your server is behind NAT, there is almost certainly no need for packet filtering and you should disable it.
I disagree, Linc. PF is very useful to block known bad IPs and brute force attacks, which are an hourly occurrence, especially on ssh. I use this PF configuration for OS X, which blocks brute force attacks, updates IP blocks from emergingthreats.net, and more. My logs and pf table "bruteforce" are full of attacks and blocked sites (sudo pfctl -t bruteforce -Ts). I also run snort on OS X and can see that the snort alert triggers are greatly reduced by simply blocking all these packets at the network layer.

  • Transfer old MacBook Pro files to new Mac mini via wifi stuck

I'm going through the setup of my new Mac mini.  The first thing it is having me do is transfer old data and applications via wifi from my MacBook Pro (running snow leopard) it is taking forever (over 24 hours now) and apparently stuck.  How do I stop and restart the transfer using Ethernet cable or FireWire to speed up the transfer process. This is a brand new mini running some version of mountain lion. Thanks!

How are you transferring the files now?
To me the easiest, most reliable, and generally fastest method is..
With both computers powered down connect them back to back with a firewire cable
Boot the old computer into Firewire Target Disk Mode by holding down the T key during boot
Boot the new computer and the old computer should appear on the desktop as a firewire drive
On the new computer launch Migration Assistant (found in /Applictions/Utilities)
Follow MA's on screen prompts to transfer the data from another disk drive (the old computer running in Firewire Target Disk mde) This last step is best performed during the initial setup of the new computer when prompted early in the initial setup phase

  • New Macbook Pro Optical Drive Issues

Okay. So I'm new at college, and had to buy a computer from the University, which I did. I got a Macbook Pro, because I really do like the Mac OS much better. However, I am having constant problems with my Optical Drive. When I first got it, the drive wasn't even recognized in the System. So I turned it in to the Help Desk, they say it works, I get it back and it doesn't. So, I opened it up and re-seated connection to the board and it works. I burned a couple CDs, installed printer, etc it's all working.
Now, for some reason, the drive is constantly doing something when nothings even in there. It's constantly making noises and such, and it will freeze my computer every couple minutes, locking me out. Even while I'm typing this, it's constantly freezing and stuff. When I put a disc in, it's not recognized. I just checked in the Profiler and now the drive isn't seen anymore. What's going on?? Please help!!

After taking it in to the tech department, I gave up on them and opened it myself. Re-seated the connection from the Superdrive to the main board, and it works fine.
