Use Marquee tool to draw an ellipse over a photo

I am trying to write a user's guide.  I take screen shots and then bring them into Photoshop elements.  In previous versions I was able to use the Marquee tool to draw an ellipse over a portion of the screen I wanted to discuss.  See below:  It was very easy to do.  Now I am using PE 8 and I cannot seem to do it.

Thanks for your help.
I tried it but really don't like the results.  See below:
the ellipse is soft and washed out.  Compare it with the one I was able to do with the previous version of PE:
which is crisp and has that little open flourish at the right side.It looks like a drawn image.  Much more professional looking.

  • Unable to constrain rectangle using marquee tool

Holding down the shift key while using the marquee tool to draw a rectangle does not work. That is, the rectangle is not constrained to a square using this technique. I think the problem may be with settings for this tool. I cannot see how to restore the defaults in Preferences. Restoring the Essentials workspace to the default did not help. How can I constrain rectangles and ovals using the marquee and lasso tools? Thanks.

    Hi,
What version of photoshop are you using?
You can reset the defaults for one tool or all the tools by right clicking on tool icon in the tool options bar.
That could also happen if you have something other than New Selection enabled in the tool options bar.

  • While using marquee tool to cut and past section to new layer, outline stays transparent

    Hello,
I am testing the trial version of Photoshop CS5.5 and I am experiencing a weird issue while using the marquee tool while selecting a portion of an image, cutting that section and pasting it to a new layer.
First off I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, 2.8Ghz Dual Core Processor, 4 Gigs Memory, 2 Gig Video card and current on updates with a fresh vanilla install of CS5.5.  Not filters or plugin installed.
Step by step of issue is as follows,
I take an image on layer 1 and while using the marquee tool select and area on that image.  I want to cut and Past In Place that selection on a new layer, layer 3.
This will allow me to insert another layer, layer 2, in between layer 1 and layer 3 and show what ever I place on layer 2 but still have a complete background if the image does not fill the entire transparent section.
A good example is a wanted poster.  You have your picture frame with the Wanted letters and reward.  In the center you have a transparent square.  In the back you have a black background.  In between the frame and the background you place a face.  The face will not fill the entire sqaure so you will see some of the black back ground.
Now the problem appears to be that the dotted line of the marquee selection makes so you can see your selection stays transparent or deletes the ares directly unter it when you cut and past to a new layer.  The transparent outline looks to be the same size of the dotted line when that selection is selected.  I have looked and searched for this promblem and resolution but can not see one.
The picture below is the result after I deselect the area.  You can see just above another section that I tried to cover up but did not get it all.
This is driving me nuts and I just can not figure out what is causing this behavior.  If I try and stretch the section, it skews the contents out of proportion.
An suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

Instead of cut, one way is to duplicate the layer and add a layer mask from the selection. Alt click on the layer mask icon at the bottom of the layers panel to add a Layer Mask>Hide Selection.
Then you can put a layer in the middle.
The reason your seeing what's in your screenshot is the selection is anti-aliased,

  • Why round corners when I use marquee tool?

I use Photoshop 7.0, but hope someone can help me even though it's old.
I use the marquee tool frequently. It always used to have straight corners, but the past week it has started to automatically do round corners. I haven't changed any settings. Why does this happen?
I can mention that I use InDesign CS2. I have worked a lot with rectangles with round corners there recently, but every time changed the corners manually. After a couple of weeks though the program started to automatically change every rectangle to round corners. I didn't know how to change this, but after a couple of weeks it went back to straight corners automatically.
I use Windows Vista. Initially there was some problems to make it go with Photoshop and InDesign, but now it works fine most of the time.

Amazing though that when I called the Swedish support, the guy just laughed because of my old version and said he was unable to help.. I explained my problem anyway, since I thought it can't be that different between versions, but NO. He was not interested in helping me.. Makes me wonder how some people can keep their jobs..
It's because of him that we are here!

  • Can't Use Marquee Tool

I used to use the Marquee tool to select an area, then either
cut/paste or copy/paste that area. I just started using FireWorks
CS3, and the Marquee tool doesn't work that way. I select an area,
but then I can't cut or copy it and paste it where I want.
Does it function in a different way in this new version (I
was using FW 4 before)? I know this has to be a simple question,
but the FW Help file isn't helping. Thanks in advance to all.

It should work fine. Mae sure the Pointer tool is selected
    when you try
    to move the new object.
I have found sometimes, if FW has been running a long time,
    that the key
commands seem to be ignored. Try using the menus for copy and
    paste, or
restart FW and see if that helps.

Change the edge type from feathered to anti-aliased in the

  • Using pen tool to draw a particular shape...

    Hi all,
I'm pretty new to Illustrator and just wanted some advice.
I'm using the pen tool to try and draw a specific shape () but finding it hard trying to 'smooth' out the points where I connect my lines.
The pen tool can't draw this all in one go, so when I try to do it in several stages, the lines don't connect up smoothly so it looks a bit... rubbish.
Anyone got any tips or how to do this simply? Sorry if this is a total idiotic question but, I'm trying...!
    Cheers

    Somehow your picture won't show.

  • Using Elliptical Marquee Tool Keystroke

How do I make multiple moves using marquee tool without starting a new shape.  When I pick up the pointer and move to another location on the ellipse it opens a new ellipse. I want to continue with the same ellipse that I started.  There must be some key I can hold down that allows me to do that.  Also, where can I find a list of key strokes in the future.

    Hello!
If you hold down the spacebar once you've started the selection, you can move it freely.

  • Marquee tool doesn't work if there aren't regions..

I'd like to remove a portion of a song just using marquee tool with "Shuffle L" Drag option so that all subsequent material of the song is pushed to the left. I would make this on all tracks but in that point some tracks haven't sequences or regions, so in those tracks the subsequent regions remian unaltered. Is there a workaround to this?

  • Cannot use retouch tool

I'm having trouble editing some jpegs in iPhoto. Every tool works perfectly except the retouch tool. The instructions say click the tool, then drag the crosshair over the photo. Nothing.
So far as I can tell, there is nothing unusual about the files. They are not write protected. I can crop, enhance, adjust contrast etc., but not retouch.

I find that the retouch tool works better if you zoom the photo. Use the slider on the lower right to enlarge the photo. I usually slide it at least 1/3 of the way to the right. Also, if retouch seems to be working, but not well, just click 'Done' even if you are not, then re-edit the photo, and you may find that it works better.
Finally, sometimes to remove the little 'spot' you want retouch to do, you have to move the cursor in a circular motion. And, even then, sometimes it seems as if the spot won't be rubbed out until the cursor is either further above it or below it.
I have to say this is and has been a real pain since iphoto5. It worked much better in iP4!

  • Using the fill option with the marquee tool in PS CS4

Using the marquee tool in PS CS4 for Windows XP, i can't seem to figure out what all the icons mean--and I'm thinking that SOMEWHERE there must be some files where all these many tool panels and options panels are schematically described for the public? I'm trying to figure out how to put in a fill when I make a circle on a layer. The way of doing it in CS3 seems to have changed, but I can't figure out how as when I hover over the icons, PS doesn't give me any help in identifying them, even though I have "show tool tips" selected in the preferences. Thanks so much for your help.

A way to do this with great flexibility is to make your Selection and then use Shift Delete and choose what you wish to fill with from the choices in the subsequent dialog.
[I imagine that it works the same way in Windows?]

  • Editing Drums using the marquee tool

I am so frustrated w logic 9 right now, i strongly dislike flex and i am trying to use the "tab to next transient" method in protools to edit a multitrack drum recording that needs tightening up. This is where logic is a toy made by a toy shop for me as apposed to a professional tool.
In logic 8 there was a way to use the marquee tool and cut up the transients then apply quantize to your groove to tighten things up. heres what happens now, after i select the files with the marquee and make the cut i cannot move to the next transient as the marquee highliter goes away and i have to start again to get to the next transient. this makes this process sooooooo tedious as i have to go back to the beginning of the track and right arrow over what i have done to get to the next transient. I tried reading up on the functions of this tool as its not something i use in every project, but relying on the manual is like getting a pamphlet on how to fly a rocket ship and then fastening your seat belt.

this is what i was doing before....
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ew6WEBU9dK4&feature=related
only after you make a cut with the marquee tool you loose your spot with the highliter and have to select and restart to get to the next transient....if i could make a cut and go to the next one i would finally accomplish what im trying to do. is this not possible in logic 9??????

  • Why does my screen keep flashing and then turn black when I use the marquee tool?

When I bring up a photo to work on and i try to draw circle or square with the Marquee tool my screen flashes black and then stays black until I use the move tool?

This issue is associated with your graphics driver not being compatible with PS' hardware acceleration. Updating the driver if possible would be advisable, otherwise turn off OpenGL drawing under Preferences --> Performance.

  • My rectangle marquee tool won't draw 90 degree corners...it defaults to a round corner.

My rectangle marquee tool has stopped drawing right angle corners. When I use the tool and mark the area, as long as I hold the mouse down I have right angles, As soon as I release the mouse the corners become rounded. It must be a simple toggle, but I can't find it,

    Hi there
Make sure the feather value in the Rectangular Marquee options bar is set to 0 px, as shown below:
