Use Migration Assistant to migrate network accounts

My company currently uses Centrify for AD auth onto our macs.  Accounts are created on the machine but adding the computer to AD and then logging in as the user.  No settings are stored/pulled from the network.  All settings/files are stored on the local drive in a home directory created on first login.
I wanted to use Migration assistant to move a user from one computer to another but when I run MA, MA doesn't see the local home folder for the network account.  Is there a way to migrate the user to a new machine easily?

If the 2 computers can 'see' each other on the network, try going to System Preferences/Sharing/File Sharing and check File Sharing. Then add the User folder you want to move (+ sign) to the window "Shared Folders". That should allow the files to be copied from one computer to the other. Mount the computer in Finder and copy.

  • Using Final Cut Express and Network accounts

I am having problems launching Final Cut Express when opening the program logged into a network account.
It works fine when i am logged into administrator, but when i am in another account it will not launch
    Thanks
    Dave

My general experience is that FCE either doesn't start or doesn't run properly unless you are logged in under an administrator account.
Tom Wolsky advised one time that after installation FCE had to be run once from an administrator account and afterward it would run from regular accounts. That hasn't worked in my experience.
As far as network accounts are concerned, are you using an xServe or a Mac with OSX Server installed, and workgroup manager? FCE will need to be installed on the local machine, not the server, and the network accounts won't necessarily work with FCE.

  • Need to create temp account if you don't use Migration Assistant first?

I don't have access to my old iMac right now, so I've gone ahead and created a main account on my new one. When I'm ready to bring over stuff from my old computer, do I need to create a temporary account first on my new iMac? I've heard that unless I do that, Migration Assistant won't bring over the info into my main account but rather will create an entirely separate account with all the old info.

I have never used Migration Assistant with an Erase and Install, as I have never had 2 computers running at the same time. I always migrate things manually one at a time from my backup external hard drive using the "Import" and "Export" functions under "File". I don't know about the network settings--I just generally set them up anew with the Network Assistant. I don't know about a .Mac account since I don't have one, but I imagine you could do something similar. I like to just start off with only the the address book and Safari Bookmarks and be sure everything is working properly before importing other files, and then I just bring those in one at a time. If you have a good backup of everything, you should be able to import anything you want after an Erase and Install. But it is essential to have a good and complete backup of everything important to you.
    Good luck!

  • Migration Assistant and Network Accounts

Can I use Migration Assistant to transfer a Network Account (Active Directory) from one Mac to another? The "to" Mac will be bound to the same domain as the "from" Mac.

Thanks for the information. After thinking about it for a time, I actually I did a clean install of all my programs because I installed a SSD for my operating system and programs. Since these are expensive I did not have enough disc space to keep all my data, pictures, movies, tunes, etc. I also had some problems with the old MAC so I didn't want to import those to the new one.
DO A COMPLETE BACKUP FIRST of the new computer.
After that all I needed to do was get my data onto the new computer.
So I went to Finder on my new machine and found my startup drive's /Users folder. In that folder there is your home folder (looks like a house). I dragged it to the my seconary drive.
Then I went into System Preferences and selecting "Accounts" or "Users & Groups" whatever version OSX you have. I right-cicked on the account whose home folder I moved and selected Advance options from the pop-up.
I clicked the "Choose" button and navigated to the location I moved my "home" folder to and selected the new home folder. Clicked OK.
At this point you will have to restart the MAC. When the MAC is back up, create a document and save it. Then check the secondary drive to see if it's there.
Opened up a new Finder Window and navigated to the new "Home" folder which was just created on the new machine. Then do the following:
Opened a new Finder Windown and selected my backup drive (or where ever you have this stored on the old computer). I selected the following folders:
    Applications
    Deskstop
    Document
    Downloads
    Movies
    Music
    Pictures Public
I then dragged them to the new "Home" on the new computer using the other Finder Window.
Took some time, but it worked flawlessly and I have everything on my new computer. This is a good alterntive if you want to do a clean install of all your programs AND change where you store all your "stuff".

  • When I use migration assistant it won't let me use my account name that I'm signed in with.  It requires me to select a different user name and then creates a separate account where my files live.  Why can't I select the user name and account name I have?

I'm trying to migrate my music and pictures over to my new iMac.  When I use the migration assistant it connects to my PC fine but it won't let me use the account name and username that I have created as the admin.  It requires me to create a new user account - so then I have two separate accounts to log in to which i don't want.  How do I get it to let me use the current account that I have to move my files to?
    Thanks!

Migration Assistant creates a new account and migrates all the information you have requested to that new account. There is no way around that. However once migrated you can move the data to the account you want to. Here are some instructions for doing so:

  • Merging user accounts after using Migration Assistant

I've just acquired my first Mac (Lion OS) and set it up without using the Migration Assistant.  I set up mail accounts for my existing email addresses (Gmail & Virgin).  A few days later I decided to transfer my old files from the PC using Migration Assistant.  Rather than do the whole thing in one go I thought I'd start with iTunes.  What I failed to realise is that the Migration creates a new user account on the Mac (something I only noticed when I couldn't find iTunes and went searching).  If I now migrate something else such as "My Photographs", another user account will appear.
I don't really want more than one user account so how do I transfer the iTunes music from one account to another and the same when I bring more stuff across from the PC?  A related issue is the fact I've set up mail accounts already.  If I migrate my Outlook mail folders and email account details can these also be merged or will the Mac be confused as I've already set something up?
Any help appreciated from this newbie Mac user.  Thanks.

  • HT4889 I have accidentally created another account when using Migration Assistant to a new MBA. How do I now 'migrate' all the files from both accounts into one to save myself having two accounts, both of which are me? Help?

I have accidentally created another account when using Migration Assistant to a new MBA. I have read that I probably should not have skipped migration in the initial set up and the problem would have been avoided but, alas, here I am. Does anyone know how I can 'migrate' all the files from one of the accounts that has been created to the other, so then I can delete it and have a single user on the computer seeing as I am the only person using it? I have read starting again, if this is the way to go, where is the best place to start 'starting again'?

Yes definitely should see it but its not coming up (I don't think) when I log out of 2nd user and into the main account. Opening finder in the 2nd account, I can obviously find the public folder because thats where I dropped all the files, but when in the main account, it can't be found. The only public folder that comes up is the folder for that account (main account) and it does not display files I'm looking for. Frustrating....
EDIT: Have found it through a round-about way but all music and photo and movie etc files have a red stop sign disallowing them from being transferred. Can you guess what the next question will be?

  • Two user accounts after using migration assistant

I used migration assistant to move my iTunes library (plus all my other files) from my iMac to my macbook. I wanted to sync my iPhone on my Macbook. I didn't think it had worked but I shut down my macbook and noticed I have two user ID's now (identical except for 2 at end of 2nd user name). Turns out all my iMac files are now in the 2nd user account. How do I get them to my first user account now? I want to have all my files together under one user name not two. Thanks for the help!

Use the Accounts pane of System Preferences to delete that user account as well as its files, connect the two computers together, follow the instructions in this article, and migrate the library manually. It's in the Music folder of the Finder's sidebar on each computer by default.

  • How to use migration assistant without creating dual user accounts

I want to use migration assistant to transfer apps, software & files on my macbook pro to my new macbook air. How can I do this without creating two user accounts for myself on the m-book air -- my account from the m-book pro & the one that the air makes me create as soon as I do start-up? Can I just use the same name & password for both? or will that make things go badly awry?
    Thanks!

If you have not booted the MBA for the first time and gone through the Setup Assistant, then I would use the Setup Assistant to make the transfer before you even create another user account. However, if you've already created the new user account on the MBA, then create a new admine one with a different username than the account you will migrate. Log into this new account, delete the first account you made, then use Migration Assistant to transfer your account from the MBP.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That's the classic behaviour after using Migration Assistant and that's normal.
To transfer the data from the new user account to your old user account, you can follow some steps. Here is all the information you need to do this > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472

How many pictures (or how many bytes) are we talking?  Now that the pictures are imported one way to cross users is to use a removable drive (although large volumes of files preclude this).
The other is to login as the user where the pictures are, then copy them into the public drop box of the user where you want the picture.
The arrow is showing (in ths example) copy files from the Pictures folder for my user to the guest user accounts public dropbox.  When you do this you may have to authenticate and you won't be able to see the results of the copy until you log in as the other user.
All users are in the folder "/Users/"

  • Using Migration Assistant to Move Data Files from one Account to New User

Is it possible or recommended to use Migration Assistant to move data files from an old user account to a new user account on the same volume/hard disk?

Migration Assitant cannot be used as a simple file transfer utility. MA can transfer an entire Home folder or entire Users folder but not individual files.
In general files in one user account cannot be moved to another user account as this would violate built-in security measures.
What you can do is to copy the files to an external device like a hard drive or flash drive. First log in to the old account. Then configure the drive to ignore preferences by Pressing COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and check the Ignore permissions on this volume checkbox at the bottom of the window. Copy your files to the device. Log into the new account. Verify the external drive is still configured to ignore permissions (reset it, if not.) Copy the files from the external device into the Home folder of the new account. I would create a temporary folder for these files. If you still end up without the proper permissions you will need to make modifications that are easier done if all the files are in a single folder.

  • I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer applications from my imac to macbook. Using either a firewire or network, as I'm waiting to select items to migrate, I receive an error message that "the application quit unexpectedly". My imac is newer.

I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer applications from my newer imac to an older macbook (10.5.8).  I keep getting an error message "application quit unexpectedly" as I'm waiting to select the items to migrate.  I've tried using a firewire cable as well as just a network connection.
    Thank you.

    Here is some information:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889
It mentions that migration is not supported with 10.4; now you said you have 10.5 - it may be the same problem. Besides, migration assistant will recognize an older system and move apps etc. over to a newer system - I'm not sure it will do the same thing in reverse.
And, there are a couple more problems: one is that your newer versions may not be backwards compatible with the old 10.5 and the second is that is you are trying to copy apps so you can use them on both, it most likely violates the SLA (unless you purchased them on MAS).
So, if none of those two apply, I'd simply try target disk mode (without the assistant) and drag over the apps.

  • Lost list of my wifi networks after using migration assistant / time machine

After using migration assistant / time machine to set up my new Mac I now miss the list of stored preferred Wlan/WiFi networks. So the passwords of wireless networks I. Used in the past are all gone.
Why is time machine not putting those on my new Mac as it does with many other settings?
How can I manually grab this list from my old Mac and out it on the new machine?
Will I find that time machine missed some other lists and settings as well?
    Thanks for help.

I've been working through this procedure this week. It's pretty good, and when it works it appears to work quite well, but there's still some bumps in the road:
    (1) Once you've migrated, Time Machine itself seems to be a little confused and future backups may fail. You might have to start again by changing to a new Time Machine disk on your new laptop. You may lose your older backups, it's not yet clear to me.
    (2) You can't restore from a previous backup during the migration, only the most recent one. (You can restore from an older backup using tools on the install CD if you need to.) I suspect this won't be an issue for you.
    (3) Migration Assistant once you've logged in a Migration Assistant while you're starting up a new machine seem to work slightly differently. For example, sometimes the newest copy of the applications in your Applications folder (say, iMovie) is preserved, sometimes it makes an exact restore of the old Applications folder even if it's an older version of the application.
Overall it's been a pretty good experience, and what you want to do does work, but be prepared for the possibility of some issues. I tried this back in 10.5.0 a few months ago and had a lot of problems, things seem better now under 10.5.2.
