Use MSDOS In a tigerX

Hi ...
I´m a Switcher i just buy a iMac, i want to know that is posible to run a MSDOS in a tigerX...
And what is the name of the program that you know that..
Thanks
Nicolas

That's correct. With Mac OS X being a Unix based operating system, you can interact with the files and programs on the Mac from the command line. Though typically I only encourage people to do this if they already have a good working knowledge of the Unix commands and what they can do. Unix is very powerful, and can cause significant damage if you don't know what you are doing. Stick to the Graphical User Interface until you are comfortable with the command line in Unix.
For a good guide on Unix commands in Mac OS X, see this website:

    Hi,
I'm trying to load a text file downloaded from a IBM mainframe system to Oracle 8.1.6 on AIX, NLS_LANG is HEBREW_ISRAEL.IW8MSWIN1255, but the Hebrew characters are inverted (like a mirror), I'm using Oracle UTL_FILE package to do so.
Using MSDOS type command the file looks ok.
    I'll appreciate any help.

  • Single-User Mode Copying Files/System Does not Boot Past Apple Logo Screen

I have a Macbook 2.0GHZ, 2GB RAM, that recently tried to download a secuirty and keynot update. Following the download the system will no longer boot past the Apple Logo Screen with the spinning wheel. I do not have access to a OS disk yet or to a firewire cable either. I've have seen posts from others that describe how to use traget disk mode to reinstall the secuirty update manually and then they can boot their computer. Safe mode will not work. I did boot into single-user mode and run the disk utility there and it says my HD is OK. Since I do not have a firewire or an OS Disk, I am wondering if there is a way to copy those files i need to a USB pen stick then install them onto the computer via single-user mode, considering this is the only way I can boot and manipulate the machine at this time. If this is not possible please let me know so I can find a way to scrounge up a firewire cable or disk. Thank you in advance for any assistance.
    Ted K

Thanks to Limnos and BDAqua I know you guys have helped others with these kind of problems from the other posts I read. I just want to list what I did exactly in case anyone wants to try to do this with a usb drive or does not have access to a boot disk or firewire cable.
1: Install security update on a pen drive
2: Boot in single user mode, CMD-S on startup
    3: /sbin/mount -uw /
4: mkdir /Volumes/usb (usb can be any name, name of usb drive or anything you want)
5: ls /dev (you need to get the drive listing for the usb drive to mount it appropriately, it should be disk#s# but this is close to what the HD and Cd drives are listed as so you may need to list once before you put the usb stick in and once ater. I had issues inserting the usb drive in single-user mode and it would freeze up the root drive)
6: /sbin/mount_msdos /dev/disk1s1 /Volumes/usb (this mounts the usb drive, i had to use msdos because of how my usb drive was formatted, you may need to check your usb drive format, hfs is the apple format for usb drives but it did not work for me)
7: cp /Volumes/usb/SecUpd2009-001Intel.dmg (this copies the files from the usb drive to the root drivel, at this point you no longer need the usb drive)
8: hdiutil mount /SecUpd2009-001Intel.dmg (this mounts the disk image)
9: cd /Volumes/"Security Update 2009-001" (after i mounted the image this is how it appeared in the Volumes directory, you might need to do ls /Volumes to get the name, the quotes are important to get the whole file directory changed)
10: installer -pkg SecUpd2009-001Intel.pkg -target / (this installs the acutal update, i used the SecUpd2009-001Intel.pkg and it worked though I think you might be able to use "Security Update 2009-001" with quotes as well.)
    11: reboot
i hope this helps anyone looking to do this. Thanks again to those who helpes and all the other posts that had information that helped me identify and then fix my issue! I still love my mac.

i have 1TB hard drive i cant drag or sent to it although i can view it on my desk top do i need to format the hard drive ? please advise

If the format is NTFS, which it likely is, then follow Ralph's advice, but youmay also want to partition it with GUID partition table.
In Disk Utility, select the drive, then Partiiton tab.
Choose 1-partition from the popup menu.
Click the Options button (it is only enabled if you change the partition layout, above).
    Select GUID partition table.
Then, give the drive a Name and format of Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
If you wish to use the drive with Windows, use MSDOS or exFAT. MSDOS will limit files sizes to 2GB. Some think exFAT is flakey.

  • Error: cannot read: OurFirstProgram.java

Went through all help to no avail. New to Java. Using Windows 2000. Attempting to compile OurFirstProgram.java using MSDOS prompt. Receiving error: cannot read: OurFirstProgram. File saved as .java in C:\j2sdk1.4.1_01\bin\. javac also in same dir.
From MSDOS tried many variations: c:\>j2sdk1.4.1_01\bin\javac -source 1.4 OurFirstProgram.java
    Please advise, thanks.

    Resolved using simple calculation class:
created seperate directory from j2sdk1.4.1_01 labeled "Fruit" in which Fruit.java file exists.
In MS-DOS from command line, used:
    c:\>cd Fruit
    C:\Fruit> javac Fruit.java
By identifying the path of where the actual .java file resided, I was able to read and complie the file creating the .class file in the same dir.

  • Compiler Error: cannot read

starting java. using MSDOS window on windows 98.
have autoexec path sorted out so compiler is invoked OK.
    submit HelloWorld.java to it gets
    cannot read:HelloWorld.java
verbose compiler option only tells me low long it spent.
How do I find out what is wrong. SUN site search produced no response to "compiler error".
This is a show stopper. Please help.
    Mike.

If you search the forums for "cannot read" you'll find some answers.
Basically, the cannot read error from the javac compiler means the compiler can't find the file. The argument to the javac command must be a file name or path name to the file(s). It appears that the command you entered was "javac HelloWorld.java" so a file name HelloWorld.java must exist in the directory you were in when you entered the command.
Use the DOS DIR command to make sure the file exists. If you used a text editor like Notepad to create your source file, Notepad may have saved the file as HelloWorld.java.txt so javac wouldn't find it.

  • Disk Utility - problems formatting a disk

I recently purchased a Western Digital 1 Terabyte "My Book" and started having problems dumping video onto it from Final Cut. On the FCP forum somebody pointed out that I need to make sure my drive was formatted for the Mac (it wasn't).
I didn't have much data on the drive, so I just dumped it elsewhere and tried to reformat the drive to Max OS Extended (Jounaled). I think I've messed things up because I didn't know the difference between the Drive image and the Partition image. I think reformatted the Partition image (instead of the Drive image) to Mac OS and this seems to have messed things up. The Drive won't mount.
At this point the partition is formatted for Mac OS, but the drive is formatted for MS-DOS. Now I'm stuck and can't seem to fix this. When I have Disk Utility format the drive to Mac OS I get a message that says "File System Formatter Failed."
I've tried reformatting the Volume to MS-DOS to see if I can start from square one, and then my Mac can see the Drive. However, if I go back to the Drive and try to change it to Mac OS, it freaks out and sets the drive to MS-DOS and the partition to Mac OS.
I can't seem to get out of this loop. I would like to have just one partition and have everything formatted to Mac OS.
    Help?

    Do this:
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
This will format the drive for OS X. Using the APM partition scheme will not allow you to create a second partition on the drive and format that partition as MSDOS. If you want to use the drive on both platforms, then you must partition the drive using MBR and format using MSDOS. This allows the drive to be used on both platforms.

  • Can Vbscript measure File transfer for mutliple files?

    Hi,
Can VBscript able to measure timing for multiple files transfer using WinActivate or other option?
    Example:
    copy C:\Single 3GB file to D:\
    copy C:\Single 5GB file to D:\

robocopy is using msdos to do transfer both files to D:\ and robocopy log file will have the duration of the file copy.
What I need to know is using vbscript to do in Windows for below task.
Robocopy does not use DOS, it is a Windows command.
Why does this need to be done using VBScript? If you really have to, you can either just use VBScript to launch Robocopy or you can use the method jrv mentioned up in the first post.

  • HD Controller Error in System Properties

    Hello,
Under system properties--hard disk controllers I have 3 entries:  Primary IDE Controller (single fifo), Secondary IDE controller (single fifo), and Duel PCI IDE Controller.
The primary and secondary IDE controller entries have exclamation marks next to them noting that they are not working corectly.
My 2 hard disk drives do not show under the disk drive entry due to the controller "errors".
What IDE drivers should I use to fix this problem.  Since I cannot access the hard drives I cannot turn on DMA support.
    Thanks for the help!

Can your machine read CDs?  There may be drivers for your IDE controllers under Windows ME on the CD that came with your motherboard.

  • Formatting a disc on a Mac with OSX 10.6.8 so that it can be read on PCs.

I have 3TB disc that I wish to be readable by a PC. What format on a Mac should I use?  My choices in Disk Utility are the usual Mac OS Extended , etc and ExFAT.
When I try with ExFAT it fails and says that it failed with the error "Invalid Request".
    Thanks!

You would need to use MSDOS (FAT32) for the drive to be readable on both platforms unless you installed third-party software on one or the other. For example, MediaFour's MacDrive will enable a PC to read a Mac formatted drive. Alternatively, Tuxera NTFS 2012.3.1 or NTFS for Mac OS X 9.5.3 by Paragon will enable a Mac to both read and write NTFS formatted drives.
In the latter you would need to format the drive NTFS on the PC.

  • Arch, Windows 7 and PC-BSD Triple Boot

    Hi Folks,
Thinking about setting up a triple boot system like the one described above. I have had numerous ideas for a partitioning scheme, but nothing seems neat because of the requirement that both Window and BSD need to be on a primary partition.
    My basic requirements are:
    Arch Linux
separate /boot (as I want to use BTRFS for root)
    /root (BTRFS)
/swap (not essential for Arch, as I have 4 GB RAM)
(Is a home required, or can I have a tiny /home for .(config) files?)
    PC-BSD
separate /boot (as I want to use ZFS)
    /, /var, /usr (ZFS pool)
/swap (essential for ZFS as I have heard it is RAM hungry)
(Is a home required at all. First time with BSD, so not sure how it works)
    Windows
    1 large C: drive (Easy)
    Shared storage drive
(recommendations for the most mutually compatible file system? It pains me to say, but FAT32?)
So, should I go with the GUID partition table so I can just make all of these, or is there some clever trickery? I was considering LVM to make my Arch root and small home, but that does not really solve the four primary partition limit on the MBR.
I should add, I have a working Windows 7 and Arch setup and my main reason for wanting a BSD is so that I have the full gamut of OSes for learning and experimentation. I like the idea of Windows 7, an Arch/BTRFS/Gnome and a BSD/ZFS/KDE...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Scott

    @well.heeled.man
from my own experience i would recommend you pure FreeBSD instead of PC-BSD (even tho they are the same in nature), the main problem is that pc-bsd is somehow not complete .. too many preinstalled stuff, ports witch is 1st thing to learn in FBSD is way too complicated with those jails.. and never the less fbsd + kde is not a good start - better use xfce at most
    as for partitions well ...
I think FreeBSD/PC-BSD uses a single physical partition, logically sub-divided to allow for snapshots
    yes that is true
as for zfs start learning by use files instead of partitions or harddrives unless you are ready to loose your data O.o
    example
    cybertorture@ego ~
    > sudo zpool status
    pool: tank
    state: ONLINE
    scan: resilvered 32,5K in 0h0m with 0 errors on Tue Aug 2 01:45:54 2011
    config:
    NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
    tank ONLINE 0 0 0
    /home/zfs ONLINE 0 0 0
    /home/zfs1 ONLINE 0 0 0
    /home/zfs2 ONLINE 0 0 0
    /home/zfs3 ONLINE 0 0 0
    /home/zfs-spare ONLINE 0 0 0
    spares
    /mnt/data/zfs-test AVAIL

    > ll /home/zfs*
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 512M 2 авг 1,53 /home/zfs

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 512M 2 авг 1,53 /home/zfs-spare
about GPT, any reason not to use msdos ? maybe you have 2.2+ GB harddive  ?
    edit: about partitions
    sda1 ntfs - windowze
    sda2 ext2 - boot (safe bet)
    sda3 ufs - fbsd
    sda4 - extended
    sda5 btrfs - arch
    sda6 ntfs - shared storage

    Hi
i wrote a small java program, when i am trying on Netscape IDE5.0 it is compilng and gives output well
The same program when i am compiling using MSDOS without IDE then it is compiling well but at runtime throwing the error like below
    C:\>java test
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: test
    Code for my java class
    public class  Test {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
              int x=0;
              int y=10;
                   for (int z=0;z<5 ;z++){
                        if ((y-- > 7)||(++x>2)){
                             y--;
              System.out.println(y +"" +x);
}i think it is problem with the class path . but tools.jar file is in class path. can any body help me
    Regards
    Raghu

What's the name of your file? In Java, all public classes must be in a file with the same name as the class. In this java command:
    C:\>java test
You are saying you want to execute a class called "test", but you didn't post any code with a class named "test". Compare these names:
    "test"
    "Test"
    "TEST"
    "tEsT"
Does Java consider them all the same (Hint: No)?

  • Can't modify external hard drive partition with Disk Utility

    Hi,
I have an external 750GB hard drive that I previously formatted as FAT 32 because I wanted to be able to plug it into Windows computers as well. I was not very thoughtful at the beginning and I just created one big 750GB partition. I currently have 450GB used and about 300GB free.
I would like to create a new partition in the free space without losing the data I have in the disk, and format the new partition as Mac OS Extended to use it for Time Machine backups. Presumably Disk Utility can do it, but when I go to the "Partition" tab it says "This partition cannot be modified" and the "+" sign below it is grayed. Can anybody help me repartitioning my drive without losing my data?
    Thanks!!!

That would likely be because the drive is partitioned MBR and not GUID. You cannot repartition an MBR partitioned drive on the fly. What you need is a drive that is partitioned using GUID (GPT) with on partition formatted for the Mac and the other formatted FAT32. But to do that you must start the drive from scratch:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the entire partition in the rectangle by clicking on it (the lines will turn darker blue) and click on the [+] Add button. The volume will be divided in two. Select each volume and resize as your require.
    5. Select one of the volumes you just created. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button.
    6. Repeat Step 5 using MSDOS as the format type.
This will work with any PC that understands the GPT partition scheme which is Vista and Windows 7. Otherwise, you should just leave the drive as it is and forgo using Time Machine or purchase another drive for Time Machine.

  • Dm1-4108au boot troubles

i have recently installed a linux distro (linux mint 13) on my machine (after creating usb recovery image), and since installing linux mint have not been able to boot into windows 7. it will begin the normal loading sequence, but after 2 seconds or so will blue screen and reset. after removing the GRUB bootloader and restoring the windows one, i still cannot do anything (let alone boot into the working linux i had).
my biggest dilemma is that i cannot boot into a live usb, the recovery one i made or into a live mint version. i've re-arranged the bios boot settings, selected to boot from usb after pressing f9 on boot and it just goes to the windows boot loader (which i cannot load recovery, windows, and now mint from)
please any input would be appreciated, i've just bought this machine and don't want to do anything to void my warranty either (ie. taking out drive and manually wiping it).

use msdos bootable pendrive that having a file fdisk.exe
    after booting from usb pendrive
just type FDISK/MBR and press enter and remove pendrive and restart your lapi.
The MS-DOS Fdisk utility usually updates the master boot record (MBR) only if no master boot record exists. Repartitioning with Fdisk does not rewrite this information.
Fdisk has an undocumented parameter called /mbr that causes it to write the master boot record to the hard disk without altering the partition table information.
    What is the MBR?
At the end of the ROM BIOS bootstrap routine, the BIOS reads and executes the first physical sector of the first floppy or hard disk on the system. This first sector of the hard disk is called the master boot record (or sometimes the partition table or master boot block). There is a small program at the beginning of this sector of the hard disk. The partition information, or partition table, is stored at the end of this sector. This program uses the partition information to determine which partition is bootable (usually the first primary DOS partition) and attempts to boot from it.
This program is written to the disk by the fdisk /mbr command and is usually called the master boot record. During typical operation, Fdisk writes this program to the disk only if there is no master boot record.
NOTE: The fdisk /mbr command only re-writes the MBR on the system drive (DISK-0) using BIOS calls. You cannot specify any other drive for the fdisk /mbr command to operate on other than DISK-0.
Why is the MBR Changed During Setup?
During the installation of Microsoft MS-DOS Upgrade, Setup replaces the master boot record on the hard disk with code to display a message similar to:
The MS-DOS 5.0 Setup was not completed.
Insert the UNINSTALL #1 diskette in drive A.
Press the ENTER key to continue.
This message should be erased and the master boot code rewritten before Setup is completed. If a problem occurs during Setup and you return to the previous version of MS-DOS, Uninstal should also remove this message. However, if Setup or Uninstal does not remove this message, or if the master boot record becomes corrupted, a new master boot record can be written to the disk using the following command:
    fdisk /mbr
