Use my Imac as a PC monitor

Hi,
I would like to be able to use my 27 inch mac screen as a PC monitor for my gaming PC. The graphics card in the imac just cant cut the latest games on bootcamp.
I have the mid 2010 i3 3.2 27 inch imac. I know it can be done but i am not sure which cable i will need and if i need to invoke "target mode" or if it turns on automatically.
Thanks

To use an iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010) or iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) in Target Display mode with another computer as the source:
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort cable to the Mini DisplayPort on each computer. The 27-inch iMac will enter Target Display mode and display content from the source computer.
Note: If you are connecting two 27-inch iMacs, connect a Mini DisplayPort cable to each computer and press Command + F2 on the 27-inch iMac keyboard that you will use as an external display.
To leave Target Display mode, press Command + F2 on the keyboard of the 27-inch iMac that is in Target Display mode. To return to Target Display mode, press Command + F2 again.
What is Target Display mode?

  • Using 27'' iMac (2012) as extended monitor for MacBook Air (2012)?

Hi all, I'm trying to find a solution how to use my iMac as the extended monitor for my MacBook Air. I saw the video on YouTube >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bVOssjlsGY << but I am not sure if it is real or fake. I have checked the forums here and other sources, but I haven’t seen any official statement about the possibility to use thunderbolt cable for this purpose. Do you have any experiences with that? Or can you advice please?

Yes, you can use the 27" as a monitor with Target display mode.  Just attach the two with a Thunderbolt cable and press Command F2 on the iMac.  It will become a secondary monitor for the MBair.

  • Can i use my iMac as a separate monitor

can i use my imac as a monitor?  my iMac just died, I want to know can I connect to a mac air as a monitor?

Not unless it's a 27" model with a Thunderbolt port, and certainly not if it's dead.

  • Is it possible to use my iMac as a display monitor ?

I'd like to use my iMac as display monitor but I don't know if its possible. Anyone knows how it works ?

There is a feature in OS X called target display mode that may allow you to do what you are looking for.
Take a look at this article as it explains it in detail pretty well http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4469
The main thing is that it is Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt or mini-display to mini-display/Thunderbolt. So if you are looking to hook a PC up to your iMac then you are out of luck as to my knowledge there are no VGA to mini-display adapters
Also look out for what OS you are running and what model of mac you have.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3775 This article discusses a particular model of iMac that cannot use the Target display mode.
    Hope that Helps!

  • How to use an iMac as a second monitor for an iMac

I have two 21.5 inch iMac's (late 2009) and I want to use one as a second monitor for the other. I have a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort connector but when I connect it to both computers, nothing happens. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong once they're plugged in or if I have the wrong cable all together. Any tips or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

Not going to work, the ONLY 2009 / 2010 iMacs that supported Target Display Mode were the 27" models, 21.5" models simply will not work. Please read Apple FAQ on TDM and you will see I am correct.

While Neil is correct, Screen Recycler's performance is not that good so the user experience probably will not be worth it.

  • Can i use my imac g5 as a monitor only?

i want to get into the intel world at home and i have an imac g5. i was thinking of buying a mini and hoping that i could use the monitor of the imac as the monitor for the mini (without using the computer part of the imac). i'm not sure if/how this can be done but it would save me the money of having to buy another monitor when the one in the imac works fine.
    thanks

If your Mac Mini has 4 USB ports, it may have difficulty with Screen Recycler and an iMac G5. Older PowerPC Mac Minis with 2 USB ports would play better together with iMac G5s. The Intel and PowerPC Macs don't play well together with that program.

  • Using an imac G3 as second monitor for intel imac

I just purchased a 20 inch intel imac and was curious if I could use my old imac G3 as the second monitor.
I already have the DVI to VGA adapter to use in the mini DVI port on the intel imac. Is there an adapter that I can use to plug this cable into the VGA out on the back of my old G3 imac?
intel duo imac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The VGA port on your old iMac is output, not input,
so what you are suggesting wouldn't work.
To do it, you'd have to take apart the G3 and hack a
connection from the gfx card to the display to
work... probably more trouble than it's worth, given
the quality & res of the old g3 displays.
Thanks for the quick response. Looks like I will have to pick up a second monitor.

  • Considering using 20" Imac with larger external monitor - good idea?

I've just returned my 24" Imac for a refund due to the uneven brightness issue. I want a set up for my illustration work, but can't justify the price of a mac pro + monitor. Therefore I'm considering a 20" Imac 2.4 GHZ, and connecting an external 23/24" monitor that has better consistent brightness than the Imac screens, e.g. the Dell 2407WFP-HC or an 23" Apple cinema display. The idea is that, any problems with gradients on the Imac screen won't bother me as I'll be using it merely as a web browser.
Is this a good idea? Will there be any problems running a larger monitor of the Imac - any compatibility issues etc. Can anyone recommend a good screen around the £500 mark or under? I basically want a screen that isn't obviously brighter on one side than the other, as the Imac appears to be.

I know uneven lighting is a complaint among 24" iMac users - and I've seen two myself. But not all of them have the problem. You might want to consider trying another before giving up on them. Having said that - take a look at Samsung displays. I don't know what they run in the UK but I'm very impressed with the ones we have at work.

  • Am I able to use a iMac 27" as a monitor for my MacBook Pro 15" ?

    Hi there,
Am I able to use a (mini display) iMac 27" as a secondary monitor for my (thunderbolt) MacBook Pro 15" ?
Are they able to connect to eachother?
    Many thanks,
    Seppiee

I am under the impression that this kind of set up is not possible. However, there's a Cult of Mac article that talks about the feasability of such set up.

I want to connect my pc to my imac to use the mac as the monitor.  My video card only has a dvi slot

Are there no cable solutions that I can use between the pc and imac.  This would be the third monitor.(The video card allows for 3 monitors to be used). The other 2 monitors are primary 5MP medical mmonitors and I don't want to add a pc monitor to my desk (for space reasons) , but would like to connect to the MAC.

  • Is it possible to use an iMac as an external monitor for a MacBook?

What is the process (if any) to turn off the iMac's system and make it essentially an external monitor for the MacBook?

No, it's not possible. Your iMac simply does not have a "video in" port for the MacBook's "video out" port. While Mike N. (nahyunil)'s option may give the illusion that you have two monitors, it does NOT turn off the system on the iMac. The iMac must be on and fully functional for that option to work.

  • Can i use a hdmi to mini display port cable to use my iMac as external monitor for a windows laptop?

Does anyone know if a hdmi to mini display port cable can be used to link a  windows laptop with an 27 inch iMac to use the iMac as an external monitor. Or are there other options to connect my DELL latitude 6430?

Is the 3.5mm-to-optical cable any better than using a standard 3.5mm?  I don't know too much about this stuff.  My thought process was that if the source of the connection is a 3.5mm jack, does it make a difference using a cable that starts as a 3.5 and converts to optical?
Chances are excellent that if your receiver is less than 20 years old it has an optical input, this is a digital signal which will sound MUCH MUCH better than using an analog 3.5MM to 3.5MM connection. I recommend using the cable suggested or one with the same connections but of a different length if your needs warrant it.

  • Can I use a 21" iMac as an external monitor?

I'm considering getting an iMac or Mac Mini so I can run Xcode.
My budget is low, so I'm considering just getting a Mini and using it with an old VGA/DVI monitor.
However, as the iMac includes a monitor, mouse, and keyboard, it's actually the same price as a Mini with a mouse, keyboard, and monitor.
Plus, the iMacs are more powerful.
I don't intend to do much on it, just Xcode and maybe some gaming. Gaming is not the deciding factor here.
I've been searching for an answer for hours, and all I found were outdated threads.
    My question is:
Are 8GB of RAM really necessary for Xcode, and is the quad-core CPU of the iMac needed?
I also read that an iMac can be used as an external display, but only the 27" models.
    I am looking at a 21" 2013 model.
I currently use a Windows gaming desktop, and have lots of extra monitors lying around.
Multi-display support is a must for me, and the iMac screen is way better than anything else I have.
Is it possible to use a 21" iMac as an external display for a Windows machine using a DVI/DisplayPort adapter?
I've read in different forums that "it has to be Thunderbolt". "It has to be a 27" not a 21". "It has to be 2010 or older".
    Basically:
Can I use an iMac as an external display for my Windows desktop, and can it be the 21" model?
I'm not getting a Mac very soon, so please take your time.
    -Thanks a lot,
    Nick
BTW: This is my first post, so it's probably horrible.

Hello Nick, A a warm welcome.. great 1st post too!
I'm afraid using the iMac for a PC Monitor is out, unless it might be a newer PC that has a thunderbolt prt & can output Video through TB port. 2009/2010 iMacs can use MDP. But 21.5" iMacs work as well as the 27" ones for either method.
Not sure DVI or even DisplayPort converters work though.
Here's how it's supposed to work...

Mid 2011s & up need Thunderbolt!

Are 8GB of RAM really necessary for Xcode, and is the quad-core CPU of the iMac needed?
Well, problem is twofold, 4 GB is barely enough for the OS & one App, & you can't really upgrade the RAM yourself later.
I'd go for the Quad core, computers always get slower over time!
Might be some 209/2010 options here...
