Use my Old Iphone as a Ipod?

I just upgraded to the new iphone and was thinking about using my original phone as a ipod. Can I sync just my music with my old phone without messing up new phone?

I too would like to use my original iphone (first gen) as an ipod touch.
I moved my orig iphone sim card into my 3Gs when I got the new iphone...and then put an old sim card I had around into the orig iphone when the screen displayed that it needed a sim card.
Now the orig iphone only displays the familiar "USB cable to iTunes" pic and when I try to go thru the activation in iTunes the processes wants to create a new ATT account and plan for me. (I called ATT while doing this and the person confirmed that this is what would happen if I followed through.)
Is the ONLY WAY to use an original iphone (as an ipod) WITHOUT the original sim card to jailbreak it?

Sure, it will work just fine that way. Leave the deactivated sim in the phone, as you'll need it should you ever have to restore or upgrade the software on the phone. You can't activate any GSM iPhone without a valid sim in the phone.

I think you're set if he cancels his service providing he had the pay-as-you-go plan. No voice or EDGE, but I'm 95% sure everything else will work, including WiFi.

Get a SIM card. Doesn't need to be an active SIM card, but any iPhone will require reactivation after a major software update or restore and activation requires a SIM card to be present.

So I put the old one inside, but when I connect it to my computer, it won't charge, or sync with iTunes. It's definitely not my charger because both of my phones charge in a wall outlet, and my iPhone 4 charges through the computer. Just not the iPhone 3GS.... I'm going on vacations with long car rides and would like to use this. Help please!

Looks like its fixed. I am syncing it now. A lot of the answers are for the new iphone so i had to mess with a bunch of settings as well. My old phone is now an 8 gig ipod. the books app no longer works and that *****.....but better than nothing...

Another thing to remember is the phone is actually usable for 911 calls and maybe others. Not a real good idea. Especially for a child.
It would depend however on the age of the child.
