Use of 256GB SSD with 2TB hard drive

What is the best way to do this?  Everything just gets saved to the SSD.  How san I set it up to save things to the 2 TB hard drive automatically.  I think that I want Documents, iTunes files and iPhoto files on the 2 TB.  Need advice

What you do is move your Home folder to the HDD, then open Accounts (Snow Leopard) or Users & Groups (Lion), click on the lock icon to authenticate, select your admin account, CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your account and select Advanced Options from the contextual menu.
You will see a field labeled, "Home directory," that has a Choose button on the right. Click on that button and navigate to the Home folder on your HDD, select it, and click on the Open button. Click on the OK button and immediately restart the computer.
After the restart your computer will be using the Home folder on the HDD instead of the one on the SSD. You can now delete the contents of the Documents, Downloads, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders in the old Home folder on the SSD. This will free up that space.

  • Can I partition 256gb ssd and 1tb hard drive to be split 50 / 50 for Mac OS and windows?

I am going to buy a new iMac. The question is which storage option? If I get the 256GB ssd and the 1TB option, it appears the mac OS is pre installed on the ssd which is great.  I would then like to install windows 7 on the ssd using bootcamp, and partitioning the ssd to be half for mac and half windows.  I think this is the best thing to do... Correct? My main concern is then can I also split the 1 TB hard drive as well? Ideally I would like to split both drives 50 / 50, install the operating systems and software on the ssd and use the hard drive as general storage.  I have read mixed reports on the possibilities of this and would really appreciate your help and advice.  I am not that technical and would like to avoid using third party software, and stick to bootcamp if possible.
    Thanks all!

I suggest you open Boot Camp Assistant and click on the button to print the documentation. Read it carefully before using BCA. BCA only creates the partition. It does not format it. That is done with the Windows installer at the beginning of the Windows installation.
Although Windows can r/w NTFS volumes OS X can only read them. That means you can copy files from the Windows boot volume but not write files to it. If you need to move files to and from the Windows system you would use the data volume you will set up on the HDD. If you don't need to use files larger than 4 GBs in Windows then FAT32 is fine. Using ExFAT would only be advisable if you anticipate the need to handle files larger than the 4 GB limit of FAT32.

  • How to use Final Cut pro with external hard drive?

I have too little space on my computer so I have to use final cut pro x with an external hard drive, but whenever I have the hard drive plugged in and Final cut going, my computer goes very slow. I just upgraded to 16gb ram... but can't seem to run FCP x while an external hard drive is plugged in. FCP just freezes up and I have to force quit.

    craigbuckley wrote:
all the files and events in final cut are still on my internal, so my internal drive is still full.... Do I have to go and delete everything off my internal?
In addition to the excellent advice to keep your media on an external HDD, you need to make sure that your system (boot) drive has a decent amount of free space if you want to have a satisfactory editing experience. Many people recommend not going below 20% free space. That's especially so for the boot drive, but as you fill up the external, its performance will also slow. Ideally, we would have separate media and backup drives,
You don't need to "delete everything". Rather, you first figure out what needs to be moved. You copy those files to the other drive and then verify that all the files you copied are in two locations. At that point you can delete those files from your boot drive.
    Good luck.

  • With the original ATV is there a way to use the usb port with external hard drive?

Is there a way to use the usb with ATV1 and external hard drive?

I have the same question and refuse to beleive that Apple would put the USB port there for a HD and not be able to use it for that purpose.

  • Using same iTunes library with external hard drive (EHD) on different PCs

I know some of the issues related to this question have been touched on in different discussions but I don't think I have seen a clear yes/no and if yes, here's how, answer to my queries, so here goes.
Like another member, I would like to take my iTunes library with me when I'm away on holiday so that I can (for example) use an Apple TV with Home Sharing to watch movies in my library or pay albums in my music library while on holiday, in the same way as I am able to at home. I have a Samsung NC 10 notebook running Windows XP (which I would take with me with a Samsing Story EHD) and a Dell desktop. My iTunes media folders are now on the EHD and I think I have iTunes library files on the Dell and on the Samsung. Of course, if iTunes Match covered movies as well as music, I would use that and just take my Apple TV with me ... but it doesn't and seems not likely to.
By messing around and not properly understanding some of the discussions about this topic, I think my iTunes library looks as I expect it to be, on my Dell - though I have yet to test this by doing a synch with my iPad or iPod Touch. However, when I plug the EHD into the Samsung and open my library, I am missing at least one movie and I don't have any artwork showing for any of the movies. This is inspite of clicking Get Album Artwork, Consolidate Files and clicking to add, as a file (or folder) to the library, the missing movie which is on the EHD in the Movies folder of the iTunes Media.  In iTunes on the Samsung "Preferences>Advanced", the iTunes media location (on my EHD) is correct.
I have obviously messed something up trying to replicate my Dell desktop iTunes library on the Samsung. So:
can/should I start again (if that is the best thing to do) with getting my iTunes library properly on to my Samsung notebook? And, if yes, how do I do that?
is it really possible to have all that you need to run and use iTunes on an EHD (i.e. both media folders and the various iTunes library files (.itl, .itdb, .xml etc.)) so that whenever I plug the EHD into my Dell or Samsung I can access my iTunes library in the same way and via the same files? Or, do you always have to have the library files (at least) located on the PC you are connecting your EHD to (showing my ignorance here! )?
if you can have all the library files as well as media on the EHD (i.e. all of your iTunes library), I assume there is more to moving these from the C drive in my Dell to the EHD, than just cutting and pasting them into the EHD and then deleting similarly named files in C drive in the Samsung?
if all of my iTunes library can be located in the EHD, would I just access that (i.e. open my iTunes library) - whether on my Dell or the Samsung - by pressing the Shift key when clicking on iTunes as a programme on my Dell or Samsung, or - and I appreciate this is more basic computer knowledge than iTunes query - does the fact that I would need to access iTunes via some form of link on the relevant PC indicate why some iTunes library files would always have to reside on the PC rather than the EHD?
if the iTunes library files have to stay on the relevant PC, how can they be kept in synch - i.e. the more portable Samsung offering the same access and picture of my iTunes library as the Dell does - or is iTunes just not set up to do this, in which case I might as well ignore trying to replicate my iTunes library on the Samsung?.
Apologies for this long list of questions. Any pointers to where the answers lie or even better specific answers themselves would be very much appreciated.
    Many thanks.

I think that's yes, yes, yes, yes, and not necessary...
    Make a split library portable
Here are the typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
In the layout above right, with the media folder (everything in the red box) inside the library folder, the library is considered to be portable. A portable library can be moved from one path to another without breaking the links from the library to the media, and being self-contained it is much easier to backup and restore. (You do backup, don't you?).
You can rearrange things to make a split library portable by taking a number of small steps which don't break the library.
Before you start any media files that are outside of the media folder will need to be consolidated. If the library is in the old style layout then it should be upgraded to iTunes Media Organization (Library > Organize Library > Rearrange files in the folder <Media Folder>) to ensure that iPod Games, Mobile Applications etc. are brought inside the media folder, otherwise the links to these won't survive changes in the path of the library.
    The basic non-fatal manipulations are:
You can create or connect to an alternate set of library files by holding down Shift (Win) or Option (Mac) when starting iTunes. (Note iTunes will continue to use this library until you use the same method again.)
You can move the library files to a new location and connect to it there as long as the media stays put.
You can move the library files and the media together if the media folder is a direct subfolder of the library folder.
If you have already moved/copied the media content from a subfolder of the library folder to a different location then you only need to copy the library files for it to appear as if you have moved the entire library in the way allowed above. I.e. just copy the library files into the parent folder of the media folder.
You can rename the media folder to iTunes Media (if it isn't already) if the media folder is inside the library folder.
iTunes uses the name of the folder holding the library files as the window title. Having made a library "portable" you may need to take a final step of renaming the library folder to iTunes or, if the library files have ended up at the root of a drive, moving all of the library files and content folders into a new folder called iTunes.
IMPORTANT: After each change you need to open, test and close the relevant library before attempting another change. If a change broke the library, undo it or revert to using the previous set of library files.
In essence all you need to do to join up a split library and make it portable is copy the library files into the parent folder of the media folder on the external/secondary drive and use the hold-down-shift/option-when-starting-iTunes method to connect to it. Other manipulations may be required to normalize the library so that the library and media folders have standard names.

  • How to use Mac with 2 hard drives?

I have a MacBook Pro that I have been using with one hard drive for 2 years. I am about to install a second hard drive inside of the computer, and I would like to know how use my laptop with these 2 hard drives. The drives I will use will be...
    60 GB SSD (primary)
    OS
    Applications
    750 GB HDD (secondary)
    iTunes library
    Docs, pictures, music, movies, misc.
    Everything else
Is this possible? Do I need to simply drag and drop the folders onto the hard drive that I want them in?
    Thanks.

  • ITunes saying -  The song "XYZ" could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it? I have my songs all located on a 2TB hard drive and it still says it has 150GB on it but can't find them and they are there???

    Help!
Opened iTunes to play some music on the computer tonight and its coming up that the songs cannot be located for virtually all of my iTunes library??? I store my iTunes library on a 2TB hard drive and its always worked fine but I ran iBoostup software earlier today and its hasn't worked since then although I have to admit I haven't tried it for a week. It was a free app to clean up files on the apps store.
When I click on the 2TB hard drive under the iTunes link it still comes up 150GB is in the file but it just can't find the songs???
    Can anyone help?
    Cheers!

The links below illustrate how your iTunes should look if you use default settings in preferences.  If you don't use those settings then you have to know what you're doing.
Image of folder structure and explanation of different iTunes versions (turingtest2 post) - https://discussions.apple.com/message/13025536 and https://discussions.apple.com/message/17457605
The above links also illustrate the Media folder and its subfolders.  Look for a file in there in the logical structure by folder artist and album.  If you're lucky, linking one file will get an offer to link others and it iwll all come together again.
I see you are running OSX 10.5.8  it would help to know which version of iTunes you use now and which one you used before.

  • Operating system not found when deploying to machines with two hard drives using MDT 2013.

Computers with two hard drives will not boot after the install OS step in the task sequence.  I get the "An operating system wasn't found.  Try removing drives that don't contain an operating system" error.  I am able to get the
machine to boot by swapping the hard drives' boot order, but the  task sequence won't complete after this.  The deployment works fine on machines with one hard drive, and I'm not getting any errors from the task sequence.  I'm deploying windows7

to remove and re-install 250 hard drives.  I've not experienced this problem with earlier versions of MDT.

The bdd.log file you sent does not show two internal drives, it shows only one.

The Touch Copy third party software for PC's is the way to go it seems and although the demo is free, if you have over 100 songs then it costs £15 to buy the software which seems not a lot to pay for peace of mind. and restoring your iTunes library back to how it was.

  • Interface with multiple hard drives

I am looking to buy a Mac Pro later this year, although want to learn about everything now, so I am well educated when I buy it ^^
I was reading around http://macperformanceguide.com/Mac-LightingFast.html and it brought up a question. Right now I have a 170 GB MBP and a Time Capsule... If I were to get a Mac Pro with the proposed SSD Launch Drive and Hard Drive data drive, what would the interface be?  Would it be similar to the interface with a time capsule, with different hard drives listed in the finder window?  Or would it ask me to specify where to write?  Or would I manually choose a 'default write to' on all my applications?
    Thanks
    Ben

Buy your own SSD, RAM and hard drives.
    Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD
    Mac Pro Memory
There are 4 internal drive bays, get it stock, skip getting an apple branded SSD they tend to not be best of class. All drives have to be 3.5" SATA or use an adapter to fit the sleds.  Other than application preferences for where a media library is,  default location for documents, scratch, and of course you can put your /Users/myaccount on a data drive.
My PCs have 1.2GB/sec of SATA bandwidth. Double the 600MB/sec that is shared by 4 SATA ports.

  • I/O timeout all the time on console - what can I do with my hard drive? Macbook pro late 2011

My macbook has been extremely slow for a while and after looking on this site I discovered I should look at the console - and noticed I had I/O timeouts all the time which I gather are a problem.
What can I do with my hard drive? If I back it up using time machine and erase the disk with zeros will the problem continue if I simply restore from time machine?
Or should I invest in a new hard drive - but if I buy a new hard drive is there something on my computer that will wreck that one as well? i use final cut pro/studio a lot and it's got to the stage where I can barely use it - do I need a 7200rpm hard drive? My current one is a 500gb 5400rpm.
I have 16gb of RAM in but since upgrading this from 4GB it made a difference to the speed for all of two seconds then the computer returned to its normal slow speed.
Would appreciate any help on this issue as I'm not particularly technical.

I wouldn't worry too much about what the Console logs are showing... although I/O timeouts, if related to reading/writing to your disk may be a problem. I would have to see the whole Console message to know for certain...
Your hard drive is sure to be slowing you down with FCP. Your best bet would be to upgrade to an SSD, if you can afford it. It's the only way you're going to see a real speed increase in FCP as so many large temp/cache files are written to the drive.
If you can't afford a SSD, you may want to look at a 7200rpm SATA III drive (if your MBP supports SATA III - which model do you have? 2011 or later, I'm assuming, since you note that you've 16GB of RAM?).
You should also update your OS to 10.7.5 if your profile reading of 10.7.2 is correct. Won't help speed, but will be more reliable -> http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1582.

  • Can i use SDXC card as an external hard drive?

I have a mid 2011 macbook air with 4GB of space. I have to constantly delete things off of my mac because i do not have enough space. I see that i have a SDXC card slot on my macbook i was wondering could i buy a 32gb SDXC card and use it like an external hard drive so i wouldn't have to keep worrying about space on my macbook?

I think you are confused. Your 4 GBs of space refers to your RAM or memory. Your SSD is not the same. If you only have 4 GBs left on it, then you need to start transferring data to an external drive. An SDXC card is storage space like the SSD or a hard drive. It does not expand RAM.

      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • W520 Replace DVD with another Hard Drive and IEEE 1394 spec for music recording

To increase the performance, I am taking the 160 GB SSD instead of the mechanical drive. Obviouslt, I need more space than this. I don't care about the DVD rom. It can't play blu ray anyway. Is it possible to replace the dvd drive with a hard drive? Where can I get a replaceable drive for this? What do I do with the DVD? Can I sell it back?
I need to do music recording with this. I was wondering about the IEEE 1394 spec; the latency etc. If I remember correctly the W510 IEEE1394 was very good, probably was manufactured by Texas Instruments. I could not find anything about it anywhere. Not even here: http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/tabook.pdf
Also, a bit worried about the sound card. How good is it? Did anyone use this laptop for music recording?

    hey udvranto,
with regard to this, i would suggest contacting tech support via the number listed in the link below to check if it is possible to replace the dvd with your harddrive.
    http://www.lenovo.com/contact/us/en/
on the part of the soundcard, I believe it is good for music recording. Though this really depends on the software that you're going to use to record.

  • D400 2TB hard "drive" model has 2x1TB "drives"

Lenvo's order page for the 2TB model of the D400 says the "hard drive", singular, is 2TB and the sticker on the box says the "hard drive", singular, is 2TB, but the packing slip?  No, it confesses that it is really a pair of 1TB drives.  So what does Lenovo support have to say?  Well, I should have called to confirm that "hard drive", really meant just one, the order page doesn't really say "hard drive" even though it does; check out on the left side of the "customize and buy" page.
And what about the "up to 8TB"?  How am I supposed to make it up to 8TB with two slots filled with 1TB drives?  Oh, no problem, says the support person; just remove the 1TB drives and replace them with 2TB models.  What???  Why would I order the 2TB model just to yank out 2 of the drives???
And as for calling their support - it was the worst.  First, the number on the yellow sheet in the box for tech support, but no, an incorrectly configured system is "post sales" support, not tech support.  But the post sales person can't do anything without a case number, please call tech support.  Tech support here, what?  Let me forward your call to post sales.  Post sales here, what? Let me put you to tech support.  I talked to tech support 3 times and post sales 3 times.  What a runaround!  Finally, I got a "specialist" who offered to take the unit back for a 15% restocking fee!!!  As if their advertising and order page and the STICKER ON THE BOX didn't say HARD DRIVE 2TB!  How dare I actually want that!
Now I either get to pay a restocking fee on a spare 2TB hard drive that is my stupid fault for trusting Lenovo's product order or pay a restocking fee on all of it because Lenovo is hoping to I'd rather put up being scammed by them than pay the restocking.  I am going to return the thing anyway and I bet American Express will see things my way as I've taken a screen shot of their web page selling a 2TB "hard drive" and I took a picture of the sticker on the bax that says 2TB "hard drive" as proof against the packing slip that pulls a fast one.  Also I'm filing a complaint with the BBB and letting them deal with these jerks at Lenovo too because it's getting really bad for my blood pressure!

If you are replaceing only one drive then you will want to keep it the same as the other or replace both.
IMPORTANT: All disks within a single storage pool must meet the following requirements:
    Same manufacturer
    Same rotational speed
    Same capacity
Mixed disk configurations may result in unpredictable device behavior and will not be supported. If you need technical assistance, please be prepared to backup your data and remove any unsupported drives or configurations.
