Use of 8cm dvd from handycam for editing

Hi just got my first mac yesterday very pleased, I have a sony DCR-DVD105E handycam, this records straight to 8cm Dvd. Does my mac take this size dvd before I just pop it in and can't get it back out? if not can anyone help me as how to edit using my mac? thanks for any help.

Slot feed DVD/CD players do not do well with those little disks.
Either find a player that uses slide out trays or connect the camera to the computer using the appropriate cable - usually USB and see if you can get the material off of the DVD.
Most likely you will have to close the DVD session (meaning you can not record anymore material on it) before the disk will show up on the desktop as another drive.
Once you have the files transfered over using drag and drop, they will have to be converted to an editable format. DV is best.
Good luck,
x

Re AppleMan 1958 excellent user tip: How can I import a homemade DVD into iMovie for editing? -
I've followed instructions with success until  "You can then FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME and choose Apple Intermediate Codec as your video codec. "  How do I do that?
I installed MGEG Streamclip 193b8 and used their utility to install quicktimempeg2 and got a message stating it was successfully installed.  (I'm on latest Maverick 10.9.2 on iMac)  Then I dragged the VIDEO_TS file from my home DVD into the streamclip app.  It asked which of 4 files to use, and I selected the first one.  Streamclip played the video with the sound.  so far so good. but now I cannot figure how to use quicktime player 10.3 to export this vob file out of streamclip.

Thank you for your quick reply and for clearing up my confusion.  I'm exporting the first section now.  I choose the smallest size, 3x4 but I'd prefer to go higher as this DVD was originally a VHS home movie.  I'm wondering if after three conversions (VHS,->DVD->MPEG) the resolution will be so poor as to not support a larger size frame?  If it can, what size should I select when I export?

Simple idea-but not always easy. Get a dvd ripping program (or find a trialware version of one). Insert dvd. Rip DVD. save dvd as either DV or MP-4.Open with iMovie. Fiddle around,VLC might be helpful??

  • Using "One Step DVD from Movie" on my IMac 10.8.6 using Verbatim DVD-R ("Life Series") 4.7 GB 16X 120, I get a wide angle version of my two minute story rather than the 3X4 standard aspect ratio that I normally get and want.  Help!

While using "One Step DVD from Movie"  using DVD-R Verbatim ("Life Series" 4.7  16 X  120 min) on my IMac 10.6.8 I get a wide angle aspect ratio on the DVD not the standard 3X4 aspect ratio.  The Quicktime Movie is is standard 3X4 aspect ratio and the video video footage is standard 3X4 aspect ratio?  Advice will be greatly appreciated.

Try this basic troubleshooting fix :
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete IDVD'S cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD folder.
    3 -  reboot.
4 - launch IDVD and try again.
Personally I would not the the one step method but create the iDVD project  from scratch so you can make sure the widescreen option is not selected in the preferences and you can follow this workflow:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

Why does my RAW image look grainy when I export it in to Photoshop CC from Lightroom for editing?
Checked LR's setting for Ps export and they haven't changed since it was OK a few days ago? It is OK if you zoom in but in 'fit page' it looks terrible!

I have exactly the same problem and it has got worse today as the photos also now open in smaller windows for some reason

  • Just a DVD from Handycam - can this be done?

    Hello Savvy moviemakers,
As a newbie to the entire process of transferring movies to a DVD, I would appreciate a simple approach without titles, themes or music. I want to send a DVD from a Handycam. Period. Is there an easy way to transfer a movie from a Sony DCR TRV 350 to a DVD? Without all the hoopla?

Sony sent me this info, which suggests I have to buy a convertor. Is this the piece I've overlooked? It's amazing they reference Apple on their website.
How to transfer video from an 8mm or Hi8™ camcorder to an Apple® Macintosh® computer.
To transfer video to an Apple® Macintosh® computer from an 8mm or Hi8™ camcorder, the following items are necessary:
The computer must have compatible video capture software installed, such as iMovie®.
The computer must have an Apple FireWire® serial bus (IEEE 1394) connection.
An analog-to-digital converter must be used to connect the camera to the FireWire serial bus connection on the computer.
IMPORTANT: Information regarding iMovie software and the use of an analog-to-digital converter is available on the Apple Macintosh Web site at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61745.
Connect an Audio/Video (A/V) cable to the A/V output jack of the camcorder.
    NOTES:
If your camcorder has standard A/V output jacks [FIG. 2], use standard A/V cables [FIG. 3] for the connection.
If your camcorder has a mini A/V output jack [FIG. 4], use an A/V cable with a mini connection [FIG. 5] on one end.
Connect the other end of the A/V cable to the A/V input jack on the analog-to-digital converter.
Connect a FireWire cable to the output on the analog-to-digital converter.
Connect the other end of the FireWire cable to the FireWire serial bus connection on the computer.
Turn on the camcorder to the VCR, VTR or PLAYBACK mode.
    Turn on the analog-to-digital converter.
IMPORTANT: If the converter has more than one A/V input, make sure the input to which the camcorder is connected is selected on the converter. In addition, make sure the converter is set to convert an analog signal to DV.
Cue the video in the camcorder to the beginning of the video footage to be transferred.
    Turn on the computer.
    Start the video capture software.
Begin playing the video in the camcorder.
Begin importing the video with the video capture software.
NOTE: Further information and troubleshooting for importing video with iMovie software is available on the Apple Macintosh Web site at http://www.apple.com/support/imovie/import/.

  • Export SD from iMovie for editing in CS3

I'm surprised I haven't found more about this here, on videohelp, and on the apple forums.
SD DV captured in iMovie and edited. The person finishing the DVD is on PC. (I'm neither of the two people.)
My advice to the client is to finish the project on the system it is started on. But I would like to have a better idea of the options.
What is the recommendation as to format from iMovie? If quicktime what settings?
I don't know yet, but let's assume iMovie 06. (iMovie 08 apparently kills SD.)

    Stanley,
Just a guess, but unless the Mac is also running Windows, I would suspect that they will not have any .AVI output options - only flavors of .MOV.
I've had pretty good luck Importing .MOV files into PP. Do not know all of the variations, so some .MOV's might work fine, and others not so well.
If the PC has QT-Pro installed, about any real .MOV (not some tricked up special CODEC version), should be able to be converted (Export) to DV-AVI with MS DV CODEC.
Sorry that I cannot give you hard-fast rules, as I do not have a Mac, and have not directly Imported anything that I know came from iMovie. Maybe I have, but just did not know it.
Still, my advice would be to finish in iMovie on Mac. However, some clients want to do things the hard way. If they are headed in that direction, I'd suggest not doing too much trimming in iMovie and adding no Transitions. This would allow for tighter editing and Handles, when on the PC. Just Exporting the raw Capture footage would probably be best, then use QT-Pro to convert to DV-AVI Type II for editing on the PC.
Let us know how it goes and any pitfalls that occur. I, for one, can always learn about X-platform exchange of Assets and what works best.
    Good luck,

  • Need to make a simple dvd from Habitat for Humanity video

    Hi,
I work for a local habitat for humanity affilate.
We are having our local fundraiser and I want to use 2 parts off the Habitat for Humanity's international video that they sent us...While I can just use their video I thought it would be nicer if I just had the 2 clips I needed on a separate dvd.
How do I go about this??
    Thanks, Laura

I need to take parts of the dvd off-and put them on a fresh dvd.
I may need a slideshow in the middle somewhere.
For instance the finished dvd will have 3 chapters, one video, one slideshow
    then one more video.
so, step 1 is to convert the DVD content into something editable..
depending on your version of iMovie, you have diff. options.
esp. for converting just parts, Mpeg Streamclip plus the mp2 playback component (apple.com/quicktime, 20$) is the most recommended tool
chapters usually mean 'bookmarks' in a movie..
I would create 3 buttons in iDVD, to jump to each part indiviually ..
allthough, you can produce a solid movie, with converted part1, slides, part2..
all that is editing.. iDVD, as said is for encoding disks from movies ..

  • How do I import a personal DVD into iDVD for editing and copying

I am running 10.9.5. I see that I have 2.66 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of memory
Do I have enough power on this machine to even do what I want to do?
I have several DVD's of home movies that have been digitized.
The files on the DVD list Video_rm and Video_ts. I see a place to import this DVD, but I am not able to select both folders to import at the same time.
What do I need to do in order to edit these home movies on my computer?
    thanks,

Here is how I do it, with no quality loss that I can see. (And I'm picky.)
Use Cinematize 2, I use it with iMovie 06 (and a few times with iMovie 11) and iDVD 11. It has several modes of converting the data. One mode is called "lossless".
    http://www.amazon.com/Miraizon-10121201-Cinematize-2-Mac/dp/B0006AAO96/ref=cm_cr _pr_pb_t
    I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09 - 11, why?
iMovie 09/11 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.

Cinematize 2 + iMovie 06 + iDVD 09/11 works great for me.
Use Professional Quality in iDVD, good for 2 Hrs on a single layer DVD, 3 Hrs 45 Mins on a Dual layer DVD. I use DVD+Rs only.

  • DVD to Premiere for editing?

A few years ago I transferred our home movies from tape to DVD. I now want to edit those dvd's. In researching this, I found a suggestion recommending that the VOB files on the disc be renamed to MPG. This worked and I was able to import the video to my project. Missing was the audio. I read another suggestion of using a 3rd party app to convert the VOB files to AVI. There seem to be several products that do this but I am not familiar with them. Does anyone recommend a product? Is a 3rd party product necessary? Is there a better way to import the video/audio from the DVD's?
    Any assistance/feedback is greatly appreciated.
    Tom

    > The earlier suggestion was incorrect.
    > No it's not. I do it all the time.
And I've been known to "shoot" a spontaneous moment with my cell phone; doesn't make it good quality! (Sorry; couldn't resist.)
I don't use this method, so I don't recall, but I think it was Dan Isaacs who pointed out the downsides to this.
My approach is somewhat different from any of the conversion methods. The best output is going to be leaving the mpeg from the DVD alone. Don't convert it to anything else (which may involve a quality hit), and which also requires reconverting to mpeg to go back to DVD. This only works if you use cuts only editing, using a frame accurate mpeg editor (e.g. Womble, or I use videoredo).
Of course, you can't really "edit" using that method, and there are times where you need to convert - such as when mixing the footage with non-mpeg. I don't do it a lot; I've used an older version of AVS Video Converter successfully. Jim's suggestion to visit VideoHelp is a good one.
Another option is based on it being Premiere's problem with editing AC3 that is often the culprit, and some users advocate copying a decoder over. I don't know how/whether this applies to CS4.
The bottom line for best quality: never archive as DVD mpeg; if possible, go back and recapture the relevant parts of your movies in your current full quality preference.

  • How do I get a dvd into iMovie for editing?

I want to edit my teaching videos. They are on DVDs. How do I get them into iMovie as all the tutorials I have seen only speak of loading from a camera?

    http://www.fcpbook.com/Video6.html
This should help. Rather than using DV which iMovie doesn't handle well for no earthly reason, you should substitute the Apple Intermediate Codec, which may give you better results.
DVDs are very heavily compressed standard definition media, so converting it will not make it any better.

  • Home movies on DVD into iMovie for editing?

I've had home movie video cassettes transferred onto DVD professionally and want to move them into iMovie so I can do edits and create new movies. The DVDs play fine but I can't figure out how to get them into iMovie so I can manipulate

As Peter Joshua stated, Instant Handbrake will do the job and it is free, but you will have to check the settings to conserve the original quality because HandBrake is made to convert for iPod and will condense the movie. I have an app called Cinematize Pro, which is a perfect app for doing this. It is not free but conserves the full quality of the video and allows you to convert selected chapters or clips and not the whole DVD content.

  • Does anyone use the Asus G751JY-DH72X laptop for editing HD video in Premiere Pro

I wish to purchase a laptop for field use. The Asus G751JY-DH72X laptop seems to have great specs for HD editing in Premiere Pro (CC 2014).  I wonder if anyone has tried this unit and: 1) Does Mercury Hardware (GPU) acceleration work and 2) Does a Thunderbird array connected to the Thunderbird port work?

The Asus G751JY-DH72X appears to be the perfect Adobe CC mobile workstation spec wise. I am thinking of purchasing this myself. Adorama seems to have the best prices on the 512SSD, 1TB HHD model. According to the list of Adobe CC supported cards the Nividia GTX980M is officially on that list. I don't know about the array...but everything else is legit. Looking at the specs and add all the reviews...this is an excellent choice for an Adobe Animator/Editor.
