Use of Delete key

I use a Microsoft keyboard with my Mac. Can someone tell me how I can get my Delete key to Move objects to the Trash?
TIA,
David
p.s. I looked at Ukelele but there didn't seem to be any way of creating a binding for the delete key.

Hold the keys marked in red below after selecting a file, and it will automatically be moved to the trash. The sequence of holding the keys matters. The left one is held down first and without letting go of the left one, hold down the right key.
Also when posting a link, the future use text describing the link without the space before and after the < and > shown.

Huh.. Interesting. I went back to check these proceedures and found there is a difference between using the return key or the space bar as the action command.
tabbing the blue ring moves the selection and then spacebar takes that action. The return key takes action of only the blue collored button.

  • When in email I can not use the delete key to erase a word

When in email I can not use the delete key to erase a word.

Yes, it does.  It is only in my email through Charter that it does not work.  I restored all keyboard shortcuts to the default, but that did not fix the problem.  I have a MacBook Air.
I called Charter also, who said it was a Mac problem.
    Thank you.

  • Using the "Delete" Key (fn + delete)

It says in the Boot Camp Installation Guide that hitting (fn + delete) on a mac keyboard is equivalent to the "Delete" key on a PC, while running Windows thru boot camp. This is not working for me. Is there something I'm doing wrong? This is very important that it work for me because I use it all the time.

oh, thought I'd share this with the rest of the thread: my temporary solution to this keyboard support problem. I make registry edits using a program called keytweak to remap keys in windows. to get the Del key back in service I just mapped it's function to the right hand shift key, which I've never used for anything (all left hand shifts). I've also remapped several other keys that aren't working in Boot Camp, but be warned -- any key you remap via a registry edit will no longer respond to the special Fn key modifier commands through Boot Camp. Oh, and I use rEFIt to fix the problem with Boot Camp not displaying my windows partition at startup. I would still prefer a legitimate solution to this problem though, as these 3rd party solutions will not cover everything.

  • Using the delete key

To delete several letters or spaces at a time I used to be able to push the delete key and hold it down once and it would delete everything until I released it. Now I have to press the delete key for each and every letter or space I want deleted. How can I change this?
    Thanks,
    Starflower

All keys should repeat automatically when you hold them down.
goto your system preferences-->Keyboard & Mouse
    then select the keyboard tab.
move the key repeat rate slider a few times. Then check the delete key to see if the reenables the repeat.

  • HT1694 Hotmail- cannot use the delete key to delete email using my iPad

I have the new iPad.   I use hotmail and everything was fine for a couple of months.   Today I tried to delete an email from the deleted folder but the delete button did not work.   Then I tried to delete an email from the inbox and that didn't work either.  Help!

    Hi joseph,
I too faced a similar kind of a problem since the event data_changed is not trigerred but when i again clicked on the button the event trigerred , what i am trying to convey is if you double click on the push button with 3 seconds gap between clicks then the desired functionality works ( It worked for me ).
Just try if this works for you.

  • Can't delete messages using delete key in Outlook 2007

After upgrading to Exchange 2010, we are seeing an intermittent problem where users in Outlook 2007 can't delete messages from their inbox using the delete key.  Opening the message and clicking delete from there will delete it from the inbox.
They can also drag the messages from the inbox to deleted items.
The issue comes and goes during the day.  One minute delete will work and then it won't and then it will again.
    Thanks,
    Crystal

    Hi Crystal,
How many uses have the issue?
Did you check the Outlook add-in or Anti-Virus application?
Please check whether there is any error/warning event in the Event Viewer.
Please recreate the Outlook profile for user if possible.
Please try to run the cmdlet New-MailboxRepairRequest.

  • Use delete keys in custom key shortcuts?

I know there are OS X shortcuts that use the delete key, like "cmd + del" to "move to trash" and with Panther I could use the delete keys in keyboard shortcuts. But when I try to use the delete key or keys like "home" or "page down" in System Preferences to make shortcut, it just makes a "TINK" noise.
Is it possible to use these "TINK" keys, maybe by editing com files or something?
I would like to change the "move to trash" to just del instead of "cmd + del" as I don't like to use two hands to delete something.
And I also made a service with automator to launch Activity Monitor, and I would like to make the shortcut as "^ + cmd + del" as I am used to launching task manager in Windows with a similar hand gesture.

I would like to change the "move to trash" to just del instead of "cmd + del" as I don't like to use two hands to delete something.
To use just one hand for that, if you are using a Magic Mouse just right-click on the file and select "Move to Trash" from the contextual menu that appears.
I would not try to tinker with that Command-Delete button in the manner you describe. Reason - say you are renaming a file, enter a wrong character and press Delete to remove the character - the file might disappear into the Trash.
Likewise, working in any text app, such as TextEdit or a word-processor, or in a spreadsheet, might get weird if Delete no longer does what is expected by the program.

  • If I delete a message using delete key, AND the "Find in this message" box is open, should the focus switch to the search box, or remain in the message list?

If the "Find in this message" search box has been left open, but I have selected a message in the message pane, if I use the delete key to delete the current message, the focus moves to the "Find" box. It took me a while to figure out why the focus did not remain in the message list so I could delete the next message. I can regain the desired behavior by closing the search box, but it would be nice to not need to. This is on a Windows 7 OS. I should check to see how it behaves on a Linux box.

    Hi,
    for the Points
Sometime I think I would like it if I could delete an iMessage completely.
Other times when reading them on my iPhone I wish to leave them until I can answer them with something that is on my Mac.
It seems that as a device or a Mac that is off line can "catch up" on iMessages sent within a few hours would suggest that the iMessages are held on the server for a period.
It would be handy for different levels of "deletion".

  • Delete datagridview row using right click context menu does not behave like the delete key

I have a datagridview with editing enabled. If I click the row header and press the delete key, the row is removed no questions asked. I don't recall doing any coding to make this happen but I couldn't do copy and paste using keys so I created a context
menu with copy, paste, & delete.  The delete option calls
    dgvVX130.Rows.RemoveAt(dgvVX130.SelectedRows[0].Index);
The row is removed but the problem is this fires other events like RowValidating which fails.  I presume because the row is no longer there.
The delete keypress is definitely a lot cleaner so my question is 3fold.
    1) Why doesn't Rows.RemoveAt behave like the delete key?
    2) Is it possible to issue a delete keypress to do the same thing?
    3)  Is it possible to suppress the RowValidating event or other events when Rows.RemoveAt is fired?

Interesting.  My delete key does not fire the row validating event.  When I use the delete key I click on the row header which does fire the row validating event and then I press the delete key.  Row is deleted and no event fires.  Works
just the way I want it to.  I wish my context menu delete worked that way.  I wouldn't know what chunk of code I can provide to show the Row Validating NOT firing when delete key is pressed but here is the context menu code that does fire Row Validating.

  • MBA 2013 Set delete key to actually delete in windows?

I have a macbook air 2013 and use it to run windows 7 for work via bootcamp, and os x for play and for my wife to use as well (she's a mac person).
Whats driving me nuts though is the delete key in windows seems to only be able to be set to "back" unless you hold down the fn key at the same time, then it will delete. But I use the delete key to actually delete dozens or more times per day and I'm hoping there is a way I can change the behavior to always delete without needing to do the fn key as well.
Is there a way to do this?

    Hi mcdonsco12345,
If you are having issues with key behavior or keyboard mapping in Windows under Boot Camp on your Macbook Air, you may find the following article helpful:

  • Content aware delete key

Started using PS CS5 few days ago, still playing around with the new features, but there is one that I can't figure it out why it was changed, the way the delete (or clear command for that matter) works. Now we have to use "command+delete" keys to just clear a section, or go another step when using just the delete key, to chose which one would you like, foreground or background color, pattern, etc. kind of a weird I would say. The content aware should be "command+delete", and keep the delete key along, I've used for more than 10 years and it worked fine.
Anyway to bring the delete key behavior back to what it was?

I agree, this is very annoying. I think the content aware team is wrong; most people are far more likely to want to fill the background layer with a particular color than work destructively on the background layer with content-aware fill. As for people not knowing about the new content-aware technology without this change in UI behavior, that is plain crap. Give me a break. Who is going to spend hundreds of dollars on the upgrade and not know about the flagship new features?

  • Delete key won't work

I'm running iTunes ver. 7.1 (59) and I can no longer delete a song from my library using the "delete" key. However, the "delete" key works to delete a playlist. Any advice?

The only thing I can think of is that you're trying to delete an item from your library while you're in a smart playlist. This can't be done. Make sure you are in one of your libraries when you try to delete.

  • Delete key does not work

I HAVE A WIRELESS KEY BOARD. AFTER I SWITCHED FROM OFFICE FOR MAC 2008 TO 2011 I CANNOT USE MY DELETE KEY ON MY KEY BOARD ANYMORE. IS THERE HELP FOR THAT PROBLEM?

Welcome to Discussions (Just a little hint, using all caps is the equivalent of shouting).
Have you tried checking to see if there is anything physically preventing the delete key from working? Turn your keyboard upside down and give it a good whack on your desktop, see what gunk comes out and whether that helps.

  • Remap the F5 and F6 keys as delete keys?

Because I make typing mistakes frequently, I use the delete key a lot. Whenever I do I crunch my wrist on its right side. I'd like to improve my ergonomics by using the F5 and F6 keys to delete. They're not used for anything else in most applications I use, and they won't cause me to bend my wrist constantly. Is there some way to get under the hood to do that?

You may have considered this option already, but a good macro-creating program (e.g. QuicKeys) can do what you describe (and lots more). The only question is whether it's worth the price ($80 to a new user). But QuicKeys can be used to replace so many hand actions--in many cases including clicks--that it likely will help you in ways besides the one you mention.
As just one example, I made a QuicKeys macro that lets me do the following: Use the mouse to put the insertion point over a word, then (with my other hand) press the tilde-accent mark key (immediately under the "esc" key in the upper-left corner of the keyboard), for which I have no other use. The word that I picked out is instantly selected and deleted--without a single mouse click. As an editor, I use that macro all the time. Other macros can be written to make screens scroll (or jump a page at a time); save files to specified folders or drives; and do many other actions that normally require using the mouse and clicking, dragging, etc.--in each case by simply pressing one or two keys. (The keys in the numeric keypad are good for scrolling or jumping a page at a time, unless you often use them to enter numbers.)
