Use of external Aironet Antennas

When comparing between the 2 models of external antennas (AIR-ANT5170P-R and AIR-ANT2460P-R), I noticed that they comes with different number of connectors (RP-TNC). The AIR-ANT5170P-R comes with two connectors, while the AIR-ANT2460P-R comes with one connector.
Assuming I’m using the Cisco 1242 Series Dual Radio AP, how many of the AIR-ANT2460P-R antenna do I connect to the 2.4GHz ports?
I believe I will only need to connect 1 unit of the AIR-ANT5170P-R antenna to the 5GHz port, as it already comes with two connectors.

Hi Tan,
You are on the right track here for sure :)
Why don't you try this Antenna instead of the 2460;
AIR-ANT2465P-R
Diversity Patch
Wall-mount indoor/outdoor antenna with two RP-TNC connectors-Similar to the above patch, but providing diversity antennas in the same package for areas where multipath problems exist. The pigtail cable is plenum rated and 36" long.

  • Linksys WRT54G with Cisco Aironet antennas

    Hi Cisco users,
    I've got a small project:
I need to provide a wireless network from a farmhous to a piggery:
Distance about 40 metres, no obstructions
    Equipment:     Linksys WRT54G v3.1
When i place the wrt54g to the most far point of the house (towards the piggery) i get a fairly stable signal of around 11Mbps
I want to strengthen the signal via an external antenna, preferrably outdoor.
    i'm thinking of this antenna:
Cisco Aironet 8.5-dBi Patch Antenna (AIR-ANT2485P-R)
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/antenna/installation/guide/ant2485.html
or the same one as above only with 6 dBi.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/antenna/installation/guide/ant2460.html
Both the linksys and cisco aironet antenna's has RP-TNC connectors.
    My questions:
1: Can cisco aironet antenna's work with a linksys wrt54G, based on the same connectors.
2: Is the antenna strong enough? can i cover a distance of 40/50 meters with this antenna, or with the 6dBi version?
3: it's a directional antenna. the piggery is straigh ahead of the farm house. How much beam width do i have on the end of the signal for coverage?
4: maybe i need an extension cable. is this the right one?
    Cisco Aironet 5-ft, low-loss, 2.4-GHz RF cable with RP-TNC connectors (AIR-CAB005LL-R)
    http://www.comegacity.com/networking-wireless-b-bn/antennas-cables/cisco-air-cab005ll-r-aironet-5-low-loss-cable
    Thanks in advance.

The connector has to be the same but also the impedance. Cisco APs are at 50 ohms. Not sure about linksys ...
Otherwise if you put the antenna outdoor and there is no obstacle, 40/50m should be reached with those antennas. Take the lowest length of cable possible to put the antenna outdoor though as cable brings loss.
I can't comment about if the 6dbi will be enough as this would require experience with the same hardware which I don't have.
    My 2 cents

  • Iphone with external Gsm Antenna

Why Apple don't produce one car kit for use in safety the phone without high risk on RF exposure? (RF = Radiofrequency)
Inside car we have Faraday shield effect, so inside car we have more high valor on RF exposure than in an open space.
I think need only one dock with a connector for an external GSM antenna to install out of car.
Now we know how much and how is dangerous use phone inside car, and who need use often in travel (for business and more...), need so much have somwething for use in safety the phone.
So im the first that will be very happy to buy this kit for my safety.
Don't say me to use bluetooth,  this more dangerous than first case, in this mode we put inside car RF from GSM + RF from bluetooth.
    Thks for attention.

  • I would like to know if you have to back up a macbook hard drive, can I use a external hard drive that has been previously used to back up several pc 's, or is it best to have a separate external drive for the Mac?

I would like to know if you have to back up a macbook hard drive, can I use a external hard drive that has been previously used to back up several pc 's, or is it best to have a separate external drive for the Mac?

In the Mac side of things, backups usually come in two flavors: clones or incrementals.
A bootable clone is a bit-for-bit copy of all essential files in the startup volume. If using the Lions, clones can be made using CarbonCopyCloner or just plain old Disk Utility. These backups represent the safest protection of your info, but take the longest to do. Recovery is an inverse process: you copy the clone back into the internal drive.
Incremental backups start with a complete backup of the startup volume and only copy whatever changed from the previous run. OS X includes the fully integrated Time Machine backup utility to do this. It is extremely easy to do and takes the least amount of time. Recovery is another matter altogether since you have to start with a freshly installed instance of the OS and have to apply all intervening backups to bring the result to the latest saved version.
As for where the backup takes place, the recommended media is an external dedicated drive or drives connected via the fastest interface available on your Mac: Thunderbolt, USB3, Firewire, or USB2. Network-based backups, wired or wireless, are attractive but may not offer the same performance and hence take longer. Also important to note that the entire drive need not be completely dedicated to a single backup. The Mac's EFI firmware infrastructure allows for an unlimited number of partitions on a hard drive and each can be used for either type of backups.
Holler if you need specifics on how to do each. This was just an executive summary.

I just got the new ipod(30GB) that plays videos, etc. I have the itunes/ipod installed to my IBM thinkpad, but I dont want to use all my internal space for downloading music. Is there a way to use an external hard drive that will recognize my ipod and allow me to update music(library) and save my space on my internal drive. I first tried to install the itunes software to my external HD and moved my library there, but then when I plug in my ipod, my computer wouldnt recognize the usb connection? What steps do I need to follow. Right now, Im back to my old way of downloading music to my internal hard drive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

  • How can I use an external display with my MBP lid closed and disconnected to power?

I know that I can use an external display when my MBP lid is closed and it is connected to power. I was wondering why it does not work when the power cable is removed.
I only use an external display when I am at home so my MBP acts like a Mac Pro or Mac Mini in that way, but it is not good to leave the battery charging constantly on a MBP so I want to disconnect the power and use external display and have the lid closed. Is this possible or do I have to leave my lid open when running on battery power?

I'm plugged into my wall socket at least 90% of the time - probably more. I always make sure that I take my MBP off mains about once every two weeks and let it run down to about 30-40% and then plug it back up. This keeps the ions flowing and the battery healthy. My MBP will be one year old on March 20, 2013, and my battery health is still at 99%. I run in clamshell mode most of the time now - since I bought a 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display. Only occasionally am I off mains - and then because I'm exercising my battery, usually.
Don't worry about running of mains most of the time - just be sure and unplug about once every two weeks (or twice a month) and let your battery dip to the 30-40% mark and you'll be fine.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • How do I use an external monitor with my MacBook??

    Hi,
I recently purchased my MacBook, but when I am at home, I want to be able to use my MacBook like a normal computer, by plugging a keyboard, mouse and my existing LCD monitor to it.
What do I need to purchase to enable this and what system settings do I need to adjust to get my monitor to work?
Could I have my laptop closed while i am using my external monitor? How do I do this? I don't want my MacBook open, while I am using my monitor!! Can someone please give me a simple step by step guide on how to turn on and use my laptop which my external monitor plugged in.
Thank you very much for your help.

  • How do i use an external drive for iphoto library

I am looking to use an external drive to store my photo library.
    Tips

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • How do I use an external hard drive as my primary itunes library?

I am trying to move my primary itunes folder to an external hard drive to free up space on my C drive.  I moved all applicable folders and made the appropriate changes so that all the music and movies would play from their new location.  But, when I shut down and then restart itunes, it recreates the folders on the C drive and makes me reestablish the links all over again.  Can't I make it start up using the external drive folder as its primary location?

The most effective way to do this is to copy the entire iTunes folder from the <User's Music> on the C: drive to the root of your external drive, without making any changes to the iTunes Media folder. You would then press and hold down shift while launching iTunes so that you get a prompt to choose or create a library. You click choose and browse to the new copy of the library on the external drive.
If you have ny iOS devices their backup still get stored within your profile folder on the C: drive.
You should also consider backing up the library to another drive.

  • How do I use an external hard drive with iMovie 10.0.1? I have run out of disk space on my Macbook Air.

How do I use an external drive with iMovie 10.0.1?  It is not obvious and I have run out of space.

If you want to move a complete iMovie 10 library (file with .imovielibrary extension) click on the library in the libraries pane and select  File - Consolidate Library Media.  This ensures that all media is copied to the library.  You can then move the library onto your external drive using Finder.  The first time to want to access it from iMovie you will have to tell it where it is by choosing  File - Open Library -Other and navigating to it.
If you only want to transfer part of a library to another drive, create a new library a at the desired location  File - Open Library - New  and copy projects and events to it from within iMovie.
Its all described in iMovie help - "Work with multiple libraries".
