Use of hyphen (-) in hostname/machine name

Hi there.
One of our architects is proposing a new server naming policy that would allow the use of hyphens (-) in the hostname or machine name of new servers.
I've pointed out to him that this might not be a very good idea as I've heard of a few problems with Oracle that can be caused by using hyphens in the hostname.
Do any of you know if underscores (_) are allowed instead? Is Oracle happy with underscores in the hostname?
Thanks in anticipation !

Thanks for that Sybrand. I've checked out what you pointed me and it does say that hyphens are allowed.
However, I've just found a conflicting document on Metalink (sorry, MyOracleSupport) Doc Id 477993.1 whereby it causes problems with Siebel environments. It says the following:-
"The hyphen (-) or dash characters are not permitted as valid characters within the Siebel server name. The only valid characters that can be used in the Siebel server name are alphanumeric and underscore characters. Configuring a machine hostname that contains a hyphen character can also cause certain behaviors when running the Siebel Server Configuration Wizard"
So, it's still a bit unclear. I think what I'll do is raise an SR to double-check.
Many thanks.

  • Add a new directory with hyphen (-) in the domain name

    Dear All,
I'm trying to add a new directory with hyphen (-) in the domain name (default domain *.onmicrosoft.com). As a result I keep getting a validation error: "The domain is not unique". I've tried several
combinations with really awkward words and a hyphen. Such domain names must be unique. I think that the error message is misleading.
Is it a well known behavior? Is it possible to use a hyphen in the domain name?
    Thank you for your help,
    Artem

    Dear Arvind,
Thank you for your effort and time in validating the described behavior.
    According to the
Regexp for subdomain question on SO, 'Each subdomain part may contain hyphens (dashes), but may not begin or end with a hyphen'. That been said, the validation error, on your screenshot is appropriate. On the other hand, the validation error
with a hyphen (dash) in the middle is misleading.
It's not a big deal, since people most likely use a custom DNS name anyway.
    Kind regards,
    Artem

  • How to change All Human workflows urls in from machine name to IP Address

I've installed oracle BPM server and when I've deployed my bpm processes i've found that all human workflows URLs are maaped by machine name.
Hostname = "Machine Name" not the ip.
I know that i can go inside each task and replace the name with the ip but i have a lot of processes and a lot of human workflows.
is there any way to replace all machine name in these human workflows URLs with the server ip address. and I need the new deployments to be with the ip not machine name.

Wouldn't it be easier to add the machine name to the dns server or the servers hosts file?
What do you do if the IP of the host changes?
Have you looked into the deployment plan? That's the location to change such things when deploying applications.

  • 11.1.1.3 install, resolved hostname different than machine name

I am installing 11.1.1.3 on a machine that was previously used as a Hyperion machine however it has been renamed and the old copy of Hyperion uninstalled.
When I run installtool.cmd, the installer resolves the hostname as the old machine name, not as the machine name is now. When I use the hostname command in a prompt, I get the new name. Any thoughts?

Maybe the hostname has been fixed in the hosts file, if it is on windows then check in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

  • Computer Authentication /host/machine name using EAP on AP Problem

    Hi All,
I have a wireless access point model 1242 with ACS server. Acs server is intigrated with windows domain. The user authentication is working ok but i would like to have a computer authentication setup. I am using PEAP with MS chapv2 on client machine and on access point using open authentication with EAP. ACS has its on certificate and client has the root certificate. I can see the acs server pulls the /host/machine name from AD but i am getting (EAP-TLS or PEAP authentication failed during SSL handshake) message on ACS server for computer authentication. What could be the problem? user authentication is working OK....
Does computer authentication require the EAP-TLS? I don't have client certificate in my setup.
I would be gratefull for any suggestion / help.

You did not mention whether your clients are running Windows or Mac OS (or some mixture of OS's)?  If you are running in a pure Windows environment, it is very easy to enable PEAP machine authentication.  It sounds like you have properly enabled machine authentication on the client side (since you are seeing host/machine auth attempts in the ACS log), but have you enabled machine authentication on the ACS server?
Which version of ACS are you running (hopefully 4.2).
    Read up on this:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/cisco_secure_access_control_server_for_windows/4.2/user/guide/UsrDb.html#wp354014
ACS supports EAP-TLS, PEAP (EAP-MS-CHAPv2), and  PEAP (EAP-TLS) for machine authentication. You can enable each  separately on the Windows User Database Configuration page, which allows  a mix of computers that authenticate with EAP-TLS or PEAP  (EAP-MS-CHAPv2). Microsoft operating systems that perform machine  authentication might limit the user authentication protocol to the same  protocol that is used for machine authentication. For more information  about Microsoft operating systems and machine authentication, see Microsoft  Windows and Machine Authentication.

•Machine Authentication—ACS  supports machine authentication with EAP-TLS and PEAP (EAP-MS-CHAPv2).  For more information, see EAP  and Windows Authentication.

•Password-Aging—  ACS supports password aging for users who are authenticated by a Windows  user database. For more information, see User-Changeable  Passwords with Windows User Databases.
•Dial-in Permissions—ACS  supports use of dial-in permissions from Windows user databases. For  more information, see Preparing  Users for Authenticating with Windows.

There are several possible causes for this behavior.
    1. Two (or more) computers on the local network have the same Bonjour name, such as "X's-MacBook-Pro.local". Resolve the name conflict by renaming one or more of them in the Sharing preference pane.
    2. You have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
    3. A Mac wakes from sleep due to network traffic. This is a bug in OS X that may only affect some models.
    4. A device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
    5. A third-party wireless router has incompatible settings or firmware. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.
    6. See also this support article.

Sometimes this message means that you have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
Sometimes it happens because a device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.

Don't think this is a conflict with IP Addresses or computer names
= DHCP hangover when computer renews DHCP lease
There is no actual other computer
It just appears that way when reconnects so creates new -2 computer name
What types of names do you use your computers ?
Whether you name them after quantum particles or the romantic poets...
They will each start to be appended with "-2" then "-3" etc if you auto configure network settings from Airport Router  DHCP service and you have this Change computer name issue where pop up window states name is already being used on your LAN
As stated previous post you can reset the computer name in SysPrefs / Sharing / Edit button

Hi, this is a common problem, mostly just irksome though.
It can have many cause, like using more than one Interface for connections, Router temporarily losing x.local & seeing a new connection with x.local already used, insists it must be x-1.local, x-2.local, etc..
What all Sharing do you have enabled?
    Some possible fixes...

  • Database creation: use machine name instead of ip address.

I am creating a new database using the Database Configuration Assistant. After the install, it tells me that the EM can be approached through http://192.168.198.128:1158/em. However, since the ip-address is dynamic, i'd prefer to refer to the machine name instead of the ip address. During the setup I could not see where to change this.

Thanks for your replies, I will try that. Version info: 10.2.0, on a Windows Server 2k3. The server runs in a virtual machine, which is pretty much the root of the problem: it tends to change ip addresses when restarting it. I will now install the loopback adapter and see what happens.

I don't have any experience with VM's, so I'll leave that to those that do. At the least, I'd expect the loopback adapter to not necessarily be your solution. That's for the assumptions that I clearly stated in my first response. If those assumptions don't match your situation (and it is now clear that they don't) then you need consider that before taking any advice based on those assumptions.

  • How to use "machine name" in new report vi?

I have a computer on a network that has Microsoft excel installed. On another computer I have an application that will take an excel file and stuff a bunch of data from a database into specific cells to generate a report. The vi works fine on my computer (where excel is loaded locally) but when I try and run the VI and access excel remotely I get an error message as follows:
    Error -41106 occurred at NI_Excel.lvclass:new report subVI.vi -> NI_report.lvclass:New Report.vi -> printTestSheet.vi
    Possible reason(s):
Report Generation Toolkit: Microsoft Word or Excel did not open. Make sure Microsoft Word or Excel is installed.

    Possible reason(s):
Report Generation Toolkit: Microsoft Word or Excel did not open. Make sure Microsoft Word or Excel is installed.
I have included the ip address of the remote machine to the "machine name" input of the "New Report" vi.
    Any suggestions/solutions?
    Gerry Thompson

    Hi Gerry,
One reason that you may get this error is if Distributed COM wasn't enabled on the remote machine. See this Microsoft KB for how to check or enable that functionality.
If that doesn't help; let me know, and I'll try to setup a similar test case on my end. The process isn't well documented, and I haven't seen any existing examples, so I'd like to see what it takes to get it running.

  • How to change host to just use "machine name" in URL

I've installed WebCenter Suite on a MS Windows machine. Due to the ip setup I also had to install the Loopback adapter to get things to work. Now everything seems to run, but the URLs always have my machine name plus the domain it's on. Since I need others to be able to access this installation, that's an issue and I need the host to just be my machine name instead of the machine name and full domain. For example, right now the wiki would be accessed:
    http://MyMachineName.mydomain.com/owc_wiki
I need the URLs (and the redirects that occur) to always work like:
    http://MyMachineName/owc_wiki
I guess the basic question is.. how do you change the "host" within a WebCenter installation?
    Thanks in advance.

Computer's local host name .......is already in use on this network.  the name has been changed to........
and it keeps adding up the number each time I wake the iMac.
What to do to get it back before upgrade error?

Ok worth repeating, hope this works.  Finally spoke to AppleCare Support and walked me thru following...restart computer holding down "command" and "option" keys at the same time with letters "P" and "R" when computer turns on.  This is what he called a PR restart, clears out discrepancies in memory (if that is what the error message actually is).  Then went to Systems Preferences/Network/Sharing and deleted the number that kept increasing every time MAC would wake up.
Even tho this was just done, I am hopeful that error pop-up won't happen again.  Fingers crossed!

  • Custom Prompt sometimes shows wrong Machine Name

I set up a custom command prompt in my .bash_profile to show the machine name. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
    The command:
    export PS1='\[\033[0;32m\]\h \W\$ \[\033[0m\]'
    Sometimes it shows
    lud610wxp-sales rfreedman$
    Sometimes it shows
    qaimac rfreedman$
    This is correct
I see the same behavior on other systems although the wrong machine name is different.

If you're on a network, the hostname for the prompt is set by performing a reverse DNS lookup of your IP address. Often an old entry will be listed in the reverse DNS table before the current one, and its name will be used instead of the correct one. You can manually edit /etc/hostconfig if this bothers you, but it generally does not affect anything because forward DNS queries will be correct.
