Use of iPhone 4 in overseas strictly with wifi

Hi all, new here and I did search the forum before this post. I have an iphone 4 that is supplied by my work who incidentally pay the bills. I will be doing some private international travel over the coming months and was wondering if I could make my iphone a 'wifi only device' by turning off data roaming and cellular data or is there no way of running the device for free?
Thanks in advance!

Here is the reply I got from O2. It looks like they were talking about turning Data Roaming off as opposed to using Airplane mode or switching Cellular Data off:
+Good morning David+
+Thanks for your email requesting more information on how to avoid data+
+charges while abroad.+
+David, the iPhone allows applications to use data in the background even+
+if you've switched of data. The email feature of the iPhone can use data+
+even when data is turned off. You may switch the email retrieval mode to+
+'Manual' rather than 'Automatic'. There are may other applications that+
+override the Data Roaming block.+
+The only way to completely stop roaming charges while abroad is to+
+delete the APN. To do that please follow the steps below:+
+- from your home screen tap settings+
+- tap general+
+- tap network+
+- tap cellular data network+
+- tap APN and either delete completely or delete co.uk so that the+
+settings are incomplete.+
+Once the settings have been changed your iPhone will no longer be able+
+to connect to idata.co.uk. When you return to the UK or want to access+
+internet again, simply repeat the steps above and re-enter the correct+
+APN, idata.co.uk.+
If I go abroad I will use the above method so I can use Wi-Fi when it's available and GPS and Bluetooth

Can I use hotspot tethering in iPad mini with wifi??

You can use an iPhone (if your carrier supports it) as a personal hotspot for your iPad and use the phone's cellular connection to go online with your iPad - your iPad will see the phone as a wifi network.
If you are asking if you can share an internet connection from a wifi-only iPad then you can't, only cellular models potentially allow you to share its connection with other devices/computers.

Contact tella to see if they offer unlocking and if you qualify.
Only the wireless carrier to which an iPhone is locked can unlock it.

  • Can I use old iPhone 4S in Europe for WiFi, w/o cellular service? A few Qs not found in Support Community-

I wish to upgrade to iPhone 6, but first want to know if I can use my iPhone 4S for camera, iMessaging and apps (i.e. What’s App) on Wifi after it is disconnected from U.S. Verizon network?
iPhone 4S, iOS 7.1.2 (reluctant to upgrade to 8.1.2), Verizon, U.S. only
Mac Mini, OSX 10.9.5 (reluctant to upgrade to OSX Yosemite)
I’ve read all of the old posts (2011 thru July 2014), but still have questions.  This is what I understand:
Upgrade iOS and apps with iTunes, before transferring to new iPhone 6
Change the name of my old iPhone http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201997 (if I wish to name my new iPhone what my old one was called)
Enable airplane mode, then re-enable just wifi
    Activate new iPhone
Transfer data to new iPhone http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT2109
    QUESTIONS:
Q: When connected to WiFi in England, Italy and Sicily - do I keep it in Airplane Mode even though it has been disconnected from Verizon and I will have an active iPhone 6 on my Verizon account being used by my husband at home in the U.S.?
Q: Will there be a problem sync’ing to iTunes in the future, or my Mac Mini?  Will it conflict with my new iPhone 6?  Or is it just considered a different device, once it has a new name.
Q: How can I message my husband in the U.S. with the iPhone 6 from Europe using my old iPhone 4S on Wifi only?  Do I use my iCloud account, like I do from my Mac Mini to my iPhone?  Or can I set up a new iMessage account on the old iPhone 4S
I appreciate any insights and answers.  Thanks in advance!
    Daphne

It doesn't have to be that complicated, Verizon iPhones come unlocked, just tell VZ you're going on Holiday/Traveling and suspend the service, no need to pay for service if you're not going to be using it. Pick up local SIM cards in the countries of your choosing, pop them in, re-activate iMessage and you're set!
I recommend getting a SIM card from the Three network in England, they have great EU roaming rates and free like-home roaming in Italy.
Set your phone's region to match the country you're in, it'll save from some headaches when calling local/international numbers.
    To answer your questions,
    1. If you choose not to have a local SIM card, it is good to keep your phone in Airplane mode to save battery.
    2. Make sure the two iPhones have different names to reduce sync/restore issues.
    3. If husband has an iPhone also, you can chat with iMessage/Facetime, just give him heads up about the new number you'll have. Otherwise, use Whatsapp if he's got an Android. You can activate Whatsapp with your American number or the international number if you choose to get a SIM in Europe.
Also, Get the MagicJack app and/or Google Hangouts, both of those apps provide you with free calling to the USA and Canada using any internet connection. Google Voice is another good way to SMS across the seas.
Let me know if you need any more tips for iPhoning across the pond.

Yep. Just put the phone in Airplane mode, then go back into settings & turn WiFi on.

  • Can I use my iphone 4 overseas?

I am in new zealand for 5 weeks and wonder if I can use my iphone 4 here? its not a 4s. I think that maybe intl voice/ data packages are not avail for this type of phone....does anyone know? it has no slot for sim card. thanks for any help and ideas folks.

No.  You cannot.  The Verizon iPhone 4 is a CDMA only device.  It will not work there.

  • Can I use my iphone 5 chargers/accessories with iphone 6

I currently have the iphone 5 and want to know if I'll need new accessories with iphone 6.  The car charger, sync cables, etc.
    Thank you.

The new phone will, of course, come with a cable. However any genuine or certified cables and chargers that worked with your iPhone 5 should work with the iPhone 6.

  • Using the iphone 5 overseas

I bought a GSM iPhone 5 from the Apple website in Canada (obviously unlocked).
I read somewhere that there are three models of iPhone 5 and that the GSM model sold in Canada may not work overseas, particularly in Asia.
    Is that true????
I travel a lot and spend a fair amount of time in China where I usually switch for my Chinese SIM. Is my yet-to-be-received iPhone just a paperweight when I travel?

Well, if you purchase an unlocked iPhone from the Apple website, then it means exactly what it says - unlocked is unlocked and this means that it will not come preloaded with anything.
What you need to do is approach the phone companies in the UK that support the iPhone, those being 02, Orange, Vodafone and 3 and get a SIM only deal with one of them so that you can use your phone.
In the UK, I feel it is always a mistake to order the iPhone direct from Apple.  If you want an iPhone initially or you want to upgrade, then go through the phone companies and take out a contract with them and you WILL NOT pay £600 for an iPhone.  Depending on the contract you take out, you will probably end up paying less than half price for the phone.
When you receive the phone on Friday, send if back to Apple for a refund and then go to the phone companies and purchase it there on a contract and then your phone will work, but anyway, you should still be able to get a SIM only contract, but if a phone is sold as unlocked, then that is exactly what it is, so no sim card included.
Also, this is not helpful to the OP and is not really answering his specific question.

  • Dear apple community, now I have some problem with iPad(The New iPad 4G). 1st, start from I got it, it really difficult charge. 2nd, very and very hot with 3G or Internet using. And more, some problem with wifi.

From Me, THE MAHACHAK to Apple Company
I think, the apple company are producing and sell only their own country or their ownself, not over the world. And in the other hand, I want to ask Apple Company about their market policy as marketing strategy or size of marketing. How about it? How did you think? Only your own or for world. I like one word as MARKETING IS WATER. Where can't water go? Such as my small country have a lot of people are using apple products a lot as iPhone, iPad, iPod and apple laptop. Cambodia is my small country with much rich families. They can use a good product or high class product, high tenology. Most of products is Apple. But they always have many bad comments and bad problem with Apple products. WHY? The problems such as Lock code, cann't conected with other, hard to find or buy, no Safety, no warranty world wide, wifi, charger, hot during 3G conected, ...etc. hope, these my own idea is looked for all the Apple customers around the world. Please, text me back. Waiting back.
    Thanks and Regard

  • Can I use my iPhone 3Gs in Japan with a Japanese Sim-Card?

    Hi there,
three years ago I've been to Japan for an exchange study program and at that time I had a HTC but as far as I remember, since Japanese people didn't have Sim-Cards, I had to buy a brand-new Softbank's mobile phone.
So since I got another scholarship for Kyoto, I was wondering if something has been changing in these last three year and if I could eventually use my Italian iPhone 3Gs by inserting a Softbank o AU or Docomo's Sim-Card.
Thank you in advance for your precious help and sorry for my poor English

    Hello
You can only use your 3Gs in another country if it is NOT locked to an Italian carrier Or
you can get it unlocked if it is so restricted
I assume someone with knowledge of the Japanese market can comment on the availability of a suitable sim but your iPhone must be unlocked before you can use another carrier's sim

  • Can I use my iPhone 5S in Europe with the global services?  Am I exposed to extra roaming charges?

I am also traveling in the middle of a billing cycle.  Can I change my billing cycle to avoid this?

Yes you can use the 5S in Europe.  It is all roaming charges and expensive.   You can't change your billing cycle, though I am not sure why you want to Change it.  Check out Verizon global information to know rates in each country you are visiting.   Just so you are clear WARNING WARNING.  If you do not know what you are doing and use your phone in foreign countries, including all the countries of Europe, you can rack up tens of thousands (YES greater than $10,000) with very little effort.  Unless you know what you are doing, put the phone in airplane mode, and only then turn wifi on only.
