Use of NAS disk for project material

I intend to buy a new computer. I have used and vill continue use a 2 TB NAS disk in the system to store photos, documents and videolips. It is a Synology DS111 with Gigabit Ethernet connection.
I will use this computer for videoediting. I have used Premiere Pro 1.5 before and DV material and even if the system was not very fast it worked until now. I will purchase Adobe Premiere CS6
I intend to include a 256GB SSD as system disk(Samsung 840 or similar) and a 128 GB SSD as scratch disk.
The rest of the computer will probably be
Intel Core i7 3770K 3,5Ghz (Ivy Bridge)
2x Corsair 8GB (1x8192MB) CL10 1600MHz VENGEANCE
Asus P8Z77-V
KFA2 GeForce GTX 660Ti 2048MB OC
I do not know how Premiere Pro CS6 handles files in runtime so my question is how much the NAS disk will be involved in video editing if I have Premiere Pro installed on the system disk (SSD) and use the second SSD for scratch disk. Video clips will be on the NAS.
Can the videoediting still be fast when rendering and exporting contents except that final storage to NAS will not be lightspeed fast. Any comments on this usage are highly appreciated.

Stefan,
I'm not sure from your post whether your plans are to continue working solely with DV video or whether you have some plans in the future for HD formats.
In any case, I think that you would be much better served by making changes to both your hardware plans and workflow more along the lines of the following:
Single 128GB Samsung 840 Pro (don't get the std. 840, its writes are much slower) - OS/Programs; if you turn off the hibernate feature 128GB should provide plenty of space
Two 1TB 7200 rpm drives and either spread the load (projects and media on one and scratch / cache / outputs on the other) or RAID 0 them and put all files on the RAID array
Do nightly backups of media and project files to your DS111 (orgainze your directory structure so scratch, cache, and output files can be easily ignored from the backup)
This plan with give you way more speed and improved redundancy as well (as the DS111 is only a single drive unit).
With your new faster system you would probably enjoy using the local drives for photo editing work as well, especially if you go with the 2x RAID 0 array option.
Finally, you should probably increase the RAM of your new build to 32GB; what Windows 7/8 does not use for programs is does use for disk caching and that tends to speed things up for photo and video editing workflows.

Jim

If I used external hard disk for back up time machine, is it possible to use that external hard disk to save another else from diffrent computers?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can do this, but you should make a new volume on your external disk. Time Machine needs a volume that is only used to store backups, so you can't store other data in the same volume as the one you are using for making backups.
If you want to create another volume on your external disk, use Disk Utility to do this > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html Anyway, you should get another external disk to store other files, but if you don't want to, you can create another volume in it

    Hi,
HP uses many components from many vendors to build their computers. All other vendors DO the same.

  • Can I use new install disks for older computer?

I have a new MBP (which I'm very excited about!). I am going to pass my two-year old MBP to one of my college kids. I would like to wipe it clean as he will be transferring all of his own info onto it from his current MBP (which will then be passed down to another college kid). I can't find the original install disk. Can I use the ones that came with the new machine?

No. The install disks are specific to the model they ship with.
I've read that a Retail copy of Snow Leopard will allow you to essentially do a 'fresh' install of the OS, but it does not include the diagnostics and configuration features of your original system disks.
You can call Apple and order a replacement set of disks for a nominal charge (around $40, I think I've read.) Since you're keeping it in the family, that would be an important thing to have with the Mac in case you cannot locate the originals.

  • Can I use PA period date for Project Functional currency exchange rate instead of EI Date?

    Hi,
We are planning to enable project currency for our projects. However while testing we have encountered one challange. We want to use PA date for all our currency conversions. However Oracle uses EI date to convert project functional currency transactions.
Does anybody know any setup or solution to convert all expenditure item transactions based upon PA date instead of EI date? Help / Solutiion on this regard is highly appriciated.
    Thanks & Regards,

    Hi,
Do u mean you have already done your Trx in EI Date and now u want to use PA Period Ending Date?
Please Correct me if i'm wrong, u want to update all the Trx from EI Date to PA Period Ending Date?
If you update from EI Date to PA Period Ending Date, this will only be applicable to Future Trx's not for the one's already incurred.

  • What is the "correct" way to point iTunes to an NAS disk for my music library

    I have a 3.2ghz Core i5 Mac running OSX 10.9.2, iTunes 11.3.
My music library is over 600mb, taking up a very large portion of my hard drive.  I have moved my music library to NAS in order to free up space.  The "keep library organized" box is checked.  Every time the computer loses connection with the NAS, it moves the location of the iTunes library back to the default.
There are several suggestions or "answers" in the communities, but I have not been able to get any of them to work.  They all seem like workarounds.  Is there a correct way to do this?
    Thank you for the help.

Best is to keep the entire library on the NAS unless you have some pressing reason for not doing so.  turingtest2 article: Make a split library portable - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-7392
If the NAS is disconnecting while iTunes is open that is something not built into the programming of iTunes and is a fundeamental problem of using a NAS with iTunes.  Actually best is not to use a NAS.  iTunes and NAS do not always play nicely together and a good number of problem posts on this forum with unrepairable broken links are from users of NAS.  I know NAS owners do not like to hear this but a simple external drive is likely as far as iTunes can handle reliably.  Some have gotten NAS to work but there isn't a magic solution.

  • Can i use 1 external disk for TM with several Macs ?

    Hi,
is it possible to use 1 external disk with TM for several macs ?
Would it result in something like that in this case:
    Backups.backupdb -> Mac1
    Backups.backupdb -> Mac2
or am i forced to have a single TM disk for each mac ?
    best regards
    fidel

    Hi,
thank you both for the quick reply.
The partition idea is not that bad, but as i am not using TM to do a full-backup, nor do i run it daily the disk-usage is not that important for me.
Till now i have done about 15 backups on my mac pro and the data is < 30 gb
    (based on the excludes)
basicly i want to use TM only for the case that i need to reinstall Leopard (cause of a broken hd or similar) as i assume that i can use the TM-data in this case.
the idea to setup TM for restoring deleted files is nice, but i dont really see a reason in my case
    best regards

  • Can I use same recovery disk for two identical computers?

I own two PCs, model m8034n, which were identical when I bought them. If I order a Windows Vista recovery disk for one of them (specifying the serial number when I order), will I be able to use it to restore the other computer to its factory condition?

I imagine as long as the Vista versions are the same on both computers it would be OK to use it.  No guarantee it will work but you may try.

  • Best filesystem format to use on External disk for windows and OS X access?

I have a external harddrive (250GB) that I want to be able to access in Windows Vista (through bootcamp) and also in OS X. Whats the best format for the filesystem on that drive so that I can access it both OS's?

    Hi,
I have been looking for this post!.
My girlfriend has a windows based laptop. I have a macbook pro and we both need to share an external hard drive (Maxtor 3200, 300gb). The external hard drive is currently formatted as NTFS. When I tried to access the drive from my macbook pro, it gives me an error, basically asking me to initialize the drive, which I won't do (got lots of data in it). After some net research, and reading this post I now know that I have to format it in fat32. I guess that my questions are:
Is this the only solution? How stable is the fat32 format? Can I use another file format for two different environments Mac OS and Windows?

can i use the xp recovery disks from the xp laptop
to downgrade the vista to xp  or is it better to install windows 7 please
    many thanks

    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi:
You can probably downgrade your Vista notebook to XP, but you don't have a license (downgrade rights) to do that from Microsoft.
Normally, only business notebooks and desktops were given downgrade rights to XP due to the risk of companies operations grinding to a halt because of software incompatiblities with some programs and Vista.
Personally, it would be better anyway to move on up to Windows 7.
Since your notebook came with Vista, it can run Windows 7. For any missing drivers you may have you can normally use the Vista drivers on your notebook's support and driver page.
Additionally, you may want to read through this dv2000 upgrade guide for Windows 7.

  • I want to use a nas drive for my time machine back ups.

    Hi,
I'm pretty new to macs. I've set up time machine on my kids macs using a time capsule without problems.
Ive now bought my own mac and want to use time machine to back it up but only have a network hard drive to do it on. When I go to choose disk, I'm not given the option of the drive. I can see it in finder ok.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks
    Roy

There's more to it than a "party line." Many folks who have started this, and thought it was going well, found it wasn't as reliable as they thought.
From a post in another forum (found by V.K.):
*The technical reason why Apple limits Time Machine to 10.5 AFP volumes appears to be to prevent disk image corruption. There were additional features added to AFP in 10.5 to support Time Machine. These presumably allow the disk image engine to force disk image journal data to write out all the way to the disk. Without such features, a network interruption can result in a corrupted filesystem on the disk image despite journaling. Remember, journaling relies on the journal being written all the way to disk before the changes take place. If you can't guarantee that (e.g., because of network/NAS buffering) then the journal is useless. Time Machine appears to rely heavily on disk journaling to deal with network drop-outs, interrupted backups, and the like. Take this away and your data is at risk.*
*If the NAS you are using supports these features it should report them to the OS and you should natively be able to choose that volume. If you have to trick the OS to use the volume it means the NAS does not support it.*
*To summarize: if you care about your backup data you should avoid using non-natively supported AFP servers.*
That only addresses Leopard, of course. Snow Leopard seems to have some additional requirements, that don't work with some NAS solutions that did work, to a degree, with Leopard.

  • Using external NAS drive for Time Machine and multiple Macs

I just installed an external NAS drive from OWC's sister company Newer Tech. It is 500g with ethernet and usb2.0 connections. It works very well with easy setup with Time Machine with no hassle.
However, in very fine print that I missed in the ad, it supports 20 computers but not for Mac only for PC. OWC customer service said I could return it but I'll keep it anyway since it works well but only for one computer at a time in read/write mode.
Anyone know of a way around this? Are there any drivers from other vendors that would allow this to be used with the multiple Macs on my home network?

Very doubtful, but even if there is a workaround, you do not want to take that kind of risk with your backups.

  • PS CS6 won't use Mountain Lion disk for Scratch

I just upgraded to CS6 and updated a volume to Mountain Lion (latest version) — a disk that I was using for Scratch. Now, when I attempt to open Photoshop I get a "Could not open a scratch file because the disk is not available" message then closes.
I know Photoshop didn't have a problem with this particular volume prior to Mountain Lion. I made the Library file visible in ML in case PS needed something there as well as trashing the prefs & permission repairs but still no joy. Switching the Scratch volume to another (non ML) disk let's PS open no problem.
PS 13.01, Snow, MacPro 8gb RAM

Try repairing permissions on that volume.  The upgrade probably changed the ownership of the volume (and the folders).

  • Use HP Recovery disk for Win7 when using SSD in DV3-2350ed?

    Hi,
Does anyone know if I can replace my HDD with an SSD en still use the HP recovery disk? I've seen some problems with the one for windows Vista but never hear about the HP Recovery Disk problems to install on SSD.
My HDD will be places in a 2nd drive caddy in place of the optical drive.
And en new SSD will boot the system i Hope.
Does anyone have experience with this? I don't want to buy an expensive SSD if it won't work!!
    Best regards.
    Reef2009

Well as far as I know since the optical drive is SATA you can use the secondary Hard Disk.
For the SSD, take an image from the partition where the system is.
And restore it on SSD by using Windows Repair.
I'm not sure 100% but as a concept it's possible since there already people doing this method or vice versa.

  • Use only sales unit for a material in a sales order

    Hi experts,
Sorry in advance if my question has already been asked before. I looked for an answer in forums but I can't find it.
One of my colleague told me about a customizing point which I can't find.
When creating a sales order, for some materials we have defined a sales unit. Conversion units have been maintained in Additional data.
The problem is that it is still possible to order material using base unit.
I want to know if it possible to fill an item with base unit and to have an automatic conversion into sales unit and how.
Thanks in advance for your replies.
