Use of NE slightly outside VZW territory

I live about an hour drive from the closest vzw tower and need to activate phones or refresh prls.  My phones now are 3G, but I may get a S4 for an upgrade.  Does anyone know if this is feasable?  I could get a high gain yagi antenna and probably use a wilson booster to get a vz signal without a 2 hour round trip.  Otherwise I just need to find a new carrier though VZ promised they could support me. Am worried GPS locks into strict vzw territory, or the NE wont support activations. Thoughts?

Actually calls and texting are run off of 1x not 3G. 3G is for data.

  • Using 3G function outside US territory!!!

    I'm staying in US and I'm planing to buy an Ipad 2 wifi + 3G.
    I would like to know that if I move to another country outside US later, is it still possible for me to use 3G function by registering data plan with another service provider? Or it only works with AT&T and Verizon in US and I absolutely have to purchase a new one when I move to another country?
    Is there any Ipad 2 wifi + 3G that supports an International version?
    Thank you so much

    Buy the WiFi+3G AT&T (GSM) model and you can get a compatible microSIM in whatever country you go to that has iPad data plans. It is not locked to AT&T.

  • Is there a way to use the 'search' function outside the search menu

    Is it possible, to activate the 'search function' outside the 'search menu' on the iPod classic ? With 30000 songs and more on an iPod, it would be great, if I could use this option i.e. in cover flow, display songs, or display albums. This way, I won't get any blisters on my fingers, from scrolling from "A hard day's night" to "You can't do that".
    Thanks for your help !

    A couple of suggestions:
    1. If you just have a few items you don't want included when you shuffle then find them in your library or playlist, pull up the info on the song/book/etc (File menu, Get info option), go to the "Options" tab and click the box that says "Skip when shuffling"
    2. If there are a lot of items, then you may want to create a smart playlist (File menu, New Smart Playlist option) and set it up so that it excludes all the items you don't want. Then you can play that playlist on shuffle.
    Hope that helps!

  • Using a local catalog outside of JDeveloper?

    Is it possible to establish a local catalog connection from outside of JDeveloper; that is as part of a deployed application?
    I have tried including the catalog XML files in my JAR file and specifying the relative path to the files in the BI configuration file (i.e., PersistenceType="FILE" RootFolder="bidefs/BIDesigner/"). However, it seems that whatever combination of file location and configuration setting that I try I receive a catalog root cannot be found error.
    Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so can you point me to an example?
    (Note: I realize that in an actual production application that it is much better to use the database catalog, however, currently I’m simply working on a proof of concept and may not be able to create the catalog schema on my target database instance.)

  • Completing jsp using web pages from outside war

    I have a .jsp called Welcome Page. On it, I wish to include the content of another web page that is located outside of the context root. I know the file's location on the server and I know the real URL of the file (it's an html file).
    Before I go through any heartache of reinventing the wheel, what, if any, method can I use to accomplsh this? I have already tried
    jsp:include...
    pageContext.include...
    getResourceAsStream...Your help is appreciated.

    I am using webSphere server, so this does not directly relate to what I need, but it did offer me a line of thought. Even after reading this, though, I noticed that it was only good for web apps running within the same virtual host.
    To give an example, say I have a web page at www.mycompany.com and wish to include the page www.someothercompletelydifferentcompnay.com/info.html
    Is there a way to do this?

    There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    (Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
    You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
    If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
    If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
    For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
    Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
    For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
    b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Question about using Db cursors safely outside a transaction

    I have a question re: proper use of the Dbc (Db cursor) to avoid
    self-deadlock when two cursors are opened by the same thread and used only
    for reading. (This is when open in full transactional mode, with an
    environment and all.)
    My first question is, should I bother? Or is it equivalent to always start a
    transaction, even before read operations? My reading of the doc says it is
    not equivalent. The doc says "in the presence of transactions all locks are
    held until commit". I read it as saying that reading with a cursor outside a
    transaction provides degree 2 isolation (cursor stability), with greater
    concurrency than reading inside a transaction (which provides degree 3
    isolation). What I'm attempting here is to avoid degree 3 isolation, and
    locks held until commit, for cursor reads -- I want the greater concurrency.
    This is just a technique to do reading outside a transaction, all writing
    will be done within transactions, and all reading will be done with a txnid
    too, whenever a transaction is in progress. Am I OK so far?
    Here's how I imagine getting away with it. Tell me if this works please :-)
    and (of course) if there's a better way. Suppose DB_THREAD was specified,
    but to avoid the dreaded self-deadlock when using multiple cursors outside a
    transaction, all such cursors are used only to read and are dup'ed from a
    single cursor (one kept as a prototype in each thread for that purpose,
    solely to ensure a single locker ID for all these read cursors; the
    prototype cursor is never used to lock anything). As I read the doc, that
    prevents the thread from self-deadlocking, provided it doesn't start any
    transactions while such read cursors are extant (other than the prototype
    cursor, which shouldn't matter because it never holds any locks). I
    understand that if the same thread did start a transaction, it could
    self-deadlock with such a read cursor, but I won't be doing that.
    My next question is, am I still OK if multiple Db's are placed in one file?
    The doc says in that case lock contention can only occur for page
    allocations -- seeming to imply that competition among read-only cursors
    won't ever cause it -- though they could be contending with other threads
    that are writing -- could thread self-deadlock ever occur here? I'm not
    worried about real deadlock with the other (writer) thread, just thread
    self-deadlock between my two read cursors.
    Many thanks if you could confirm my reasoning (or dash my hopes) before I
    find out the long, hard nondeterministic way if it's any good.

    Good, so I've overdesigned my solution -- I can dispense with dup()ing a prototype cursor and just use multiple read-only cursors made by Db::cursor with a NULL txnid.
    Many thanks for your prompt response.
    I am David Christie at samizdat.org BTW -- we exchanged email last year re: a potential C++ std container interface for Berkeley DB -- sometime before the merger. • Using a registered object outside a UnitOfWork

    We are constructing a multi-tiered application using TopLink 4.6. The Model and Controller are in different JARs but are part of the same EAR. Data objects mapped in TopLink are sent by the Model to the Controller. The Controller may modify these objects locally, and send them back to the Model for persisting.
    When the Controller makes a request for a data object to the Model, the Model does the following -
    1. Gets the object from the TopLink cache through a query
    2. Gets a UnitOfWork
    3. Registers the object with the UnitOfWork to get the clone
    4. Releases the UnitOfWork
    5. Returns the clone to the Controller
    I am registering the object with a UnitOfWork, even though I am not modifying it in that UnitOfWork.
    I have to do this because the object model is very complicated. The Controller needs access to the root object, and also all of its nested parts. Using this technique, I retain the benefit of Indirection. The other option is to use a ObjectCopyingPolicy, but that is expensive as the Model is forced to do a cascadeAll copy. Also, I cannot send back the original object returned by the query because this object comes from the cache, and the Controller could end up modifying it, thus causing possible data inconsistency.
    After the Controller sends back the modified object, the Model now does the following -
    1. Check the incoming object and perform business validations
    2. Get a UnitOfWork
    3. Do a deepMergeClone on the UnitOfWork to save the object.
    4. Commit or release the UnitOfWork
    This seems to work without any problems. Will this have any other repercussions? The object is initially obtained through a different UnitOfWork, and is saved using a different UnitOfWork.
    Is there a better way of handling this situation?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    The key here is that the object is cloned (copied) and the clone (copy) is returned to the client.
    The client then makes the changes to the copy (the original is still in the session cache and has not changed)
    When the object is register, TopLink does a look-up, using the copy Object, in the session to find the original object, it then makes a clone of the original object.
    You now have three copies of the same object. The Original Object (no changes), the clone of the Original Object (no changes yet), and the copy Object (with client changes).
    The next step merges the Original Object Clone (without changes) and the copy Object Clone (with changes).
    Now your system has two copies, The Original Object (no changes) and the clone Object (with changes).
    Now on commit, TopLink compares the Original with the Clone and updates the DB.
    Raanan.

  • Using Reflection on classes outside the classpath

    Hi all,
    Im writing a tool that takes a directory containing class files (from other internal projects) and returns information such as the Class name, package, parent, constructors and public methods. These projects will not be on the classpath and will also use jars that are not on the classpath.
    I decided that ClassLoaders were the way to go. So I created a SimpleClassLoader class that takes a file, reads it in as an array of bytes and calls defineClass:
    public class SimpleClassLoader extends ClassLoader
         public SimpleClassLoader()
         public synchronized Class loadClass(String name, boolean resolveIt) throws ClassNotFoundException
              System.out.println("1) loading class:   " + name);
              return super.loadClass(name, resolveIt);
         public synchronized Class loadClass(File classFile) throws ClassNotFoundException
              System.out.println("2) Loading class: " + classFile.getName());
              try
                   byte[] data = getClassData(classFile);
                   return defineClass(name, data, 0, data.length);
              catch (IOException e)
                   throw new ClassNotFoundException();
         byte[] getClassData(File classFile) throws IOException
              byte result[];
              try
                   FileInputStream in = new FileInputStream(classFile);
                   result = new byte[in.available()];
                   in.read(result);
                   in.close();
                   return result;
              catch (IOException e)
                   throw new IOException();
    public class ClassParser
         public Class parse (File classFile)
              SimpleClassLoader loader = new SimpleClassLoader();
              Class reflectClass = null;
              try {
                   return loader.loadClass(classFile);
              } catch (ClassNotFoundException cnfe) {
                   System.out.println("Error loading class: " + classFile.getName() + "\n" + cnfe);
                   return null;
    }This worked for simple classes but when the superclass was in a jar or another file in the directory that hadnt already been loaded a ClassNotFoundException was thrown. So I then decided to try using URLClassLoader and loading in the jars and the entire source directory before calling findClass on it.
    class MyURLClassLoader extends URLClassLoader
         public MyURLClassLoader(URL[] urls)
              super(urls);
         public Class findClass(String classname) throws ClassNotFoundException
              return super.findClass(classname);
    public class ClassParser {
         private URL[] _classpath;
         private String _root;
         public ClassParser(File[] files, String root) {
              _root = root;
              _classpath = new URL[files.length];
              for (int i = 0; i < files.length; i++) {
                   try {
                        URL url = new URL("jar", "", files.toURL() + "!/");
                        this._classpath[i] = url;
                   } catch (MalformedURLException e) {
                        e.printStackTrace();
         public Class parse (File classFile)      {
              MyURLClassLoader urlLoader = new MyURLClassLoader(_classpath);
              Class reflectClass = null;
              String classname = "";
              // Try to load a Class instance from the file
              try {
                   classname = getClassName(classFile);
                   return urlLoader.findClass(classname);
              } catch (ClassNotFoundException cnfe) {
                   System.out.println("Error loading class: " + classname + "\n" + cnfe);
                   return null;
         String getClassName (File file) throws ClassNotFoundException {
              if (file.getAbsolutePath().startsWith(_root)) {
                   String packagePath = file.getAbsolutePath().substring(_root.length(), file.getAbsolutePath().lastIndexOf("."));
                   packagePath = packagePath.replace(File.separatorChar, '.');
                   return packagePath;
              } else {
                   throw new ClassNotFoundException();
         public static void main(String args[]) {
    File [] files = new File [] {
    new File("C:\\Projects\\app\lib\\jacob-1.6.jar"),
    new File("C:\\Projects\\app\\lib\\xalan.jar"),
    new File("C:\\Projects\\app\\lib\\xmlunit1.0.jar"),
    new File("C:\\Projects\\app\\classes\\com\\foo\\bar\\swing\\")
    parser = new ClassParser(files, "C:\\Projects\\app\\classes\\");
    This seems to work when I call findClass on a class thats in one of the jars but not on a class in the classes directory.
    Does anyone have any ideas what im doing wrong or whether im barking up the wrong tree completely??
    Thanks,
    Conor

    The URLs that you supply to an URLClassLoader each define the location of the default package for that portion of the classpath for the ClassLoader.
    This is the problem line
    new File("C:\\Projects\\app\\classes\\com\\foo\\bar\\swing\\")I suspect that it should be..
    new File( "C:\\Projects\\app\classes" )as this is the location of that default package.

  • Use of an entity outside of context

    I am learning EF and I don't know what would be the best approach for this:
    I have a Menu entity, which holds the menu of a restaurant in a POS application. In the Order form, I only need to read the menu once, and after that I just need it to display the menu items as buttons for the order taking process.
    Is it OK to use a context to read this menu object on form load for example, and close the context after that? Will that object be available after closing the context?
    Is this a good approach or is a better / recommended way to achieve this? Maybe a wrapper class?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
    >>Is it OK to use a context to read this menu object on form load for example, and close the context after that?
    I agree with darnold, since you just read data from database one time, it is recommended to close it.
    >>Will that object be available after closing the context?
    It depends on how and where you define this object, if in the context as:
    using (DFDBEntities db = new DFDBEntities())
    Order order = db.Orders.FirstOrDefault();
    Assuming the Order is the Menu in your case, after you dispose the context, it would be disposed as well.
    If defining it out of the using syntax, yes, it is still available.

  • Using ARD from an outside/offsite location...

    Is ARD the right solution to use if I want to access my computers when I'm on the road and away from the office? It's a Home office network of four computers. If this is not the ideal solution, what would work best for this application? We can upgrade to 10.4.6+ if necessary. Been trying to figure this out for over a year now. Looking forward to your help and advice. Thank you all! With Respect, Donnie Dixon.
    G4/867DP-MDD   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    ARD can be configured to connect through routers, but it is difficult to set up, and if you try to change the port it listens on, that is several degrees more complex. It's really designed to manage a bunch of systems located on one network in one place...it works fine that way. If your school or lab is basically in one place, ARD will work fine, or if you have multiple locations, you can buy an ARD admin for each location.
    But, for connecting between networks or through routers where port forwarding is an issue, Timbuktu is a better solution. The smart sysadmin has many tools on hir or her belts, ARD, Timbuktu, VNC, etc. FWIW, we use ARD for administering our lab machines, and have Timbuktu on all the server and admin machines, since we may need to access those from other locations.
