Use of other graphics cards?

I tried a trial of PPro CS5.
I realize that only some cards will allow hardware acceleration. However, I was wondering if PPro CS5 will function with other cards but without hardware acceleration capabilities?
My new machine has an Nvidia GTX 260 card.  When I brought in some AVI footage, it played, but there was kind of colored starburst effect that overlaid the video.  It was kind of like those 1960's psychedelic posters where a rock star had sun rays emanating from behind the person in the poster ala Hendrix.  Unfortunately my trial has expired so I cannot render out a sample and post on my web host for viewing.
Therefore my question is: do I need one of the approved cards in order to use PPro CS5 at all?  My power supply can provide 480 watts which appears to be marginal for some of the cards specified by Adobe for use with PPro CS5.
Many thanks.

The exact version of nVidia driver can, indeed, cause problems with PPro CS5
And, your power supply is not large enough for the higher powered nVidia cards... which have 2 power connectors on the card and require a LOT of power to run
But, if you don't want to get into major rebuilding, many ATI cards work just fine for CS5, albeit without hardware MPE

  • How do I use the secondary graphics card on a mac book pro with retina display?

I know that this is kind of a stupid question but I am new to dual graphics cards and this is the first mac that I have ever had, so I don't understand how you use the 2nd graphics card. When I click on the apple logo and go to about it shows the Intel Graphics HD 4000, but I know that they put an Nvida in here to so how do I access that? Because it has a lot more graphic power than the intel does.

Try opening iPhoto and then consulting the More Info... item. That app will cause an autoswitch to the big GPU.
Same will happen with any other app that requires that kind of display driving power.

Hello, thank you for all these informations.
Right now my graphic card current Bios Version is 80.04.00.2F (P2004.0010). Is it the good one ?
I've found out yesterday evening about the GPT Drive, when I saw it on my laptop which works fine with UEFI fastboot mode.
For the moment the main drive on my desktop is MBR formated SSD.
Is it safe to clone the MBR SSD Drive to another GPT formated SSD Drive ?

  • How do I make Visual Studio 2013 use my dedicated graphics card instead of integrated graphics on my laptop?

I am using Alienware 13 as a portable workstation. I do game development on Unreal Engine 4 using Visual Studio 2013. The issue I am having is that when I want to debug codes in Visual Studio 2013, it launches Unreal Engine 4 through the debugger and uses
the integrated graphics card rather than my dedicated graphics card, which is an nVida Geforce 860M.
When I wanted to change the settings in the NVidia Control Panel, I see this:
The drop-down menu is grayed out, so I cannot select to change the graphics card to my dedicated card.
What should I do? How do I make it so that Visual Studio uses my dedicated card? Thanks in advance.

    Hi tom_mai78101,
Thank you for posting in the MSDN forum.
It seems that it is not the correct forum for this issue, since this forum is to discuss Visual Studio WPF/SL Designer, Visual Studio Guidance Automation Toolkit, Developer Documentation and Help System, and Visual Studio Editor.
As you said that you want to change the setting so that Visual Studio uses your dedicated card in NVidia Control Panel, since this NVidia Control Panel is third-party tool, we are not support it. So please post this issue this issue directly
to this NVidia Control Panel Official website:

  • Does the standard Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the 13 inch Macbook pro stand up to other graphics cards with dedicated memory ( 1GB of memory for instance)?

Does the standard Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the 13 inch Macbook pro stand up to other graphics cards with dedicated memory ( 1GB of memory for instance)? I need a laptop for college and the Engineering program suggests a dedicated video card with minimum 1GB of video memory.

I have a Intel HD 4000 in my Mac Mini (late 2012), and it's okay for what I need it.
    However:
    - there were a few issues with flickering on the video output to external monitors. These were solved through a firmware update that came with OSX 10.8.3 - for the majority of the users. There is apparently still a small group of users that still has issues. You can read long threads about this here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4472316?start=0&tstart=0
    and here
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4490924?start=0&tstart=0
So for most of us (me included) this issue is solved, but it seems that certain displays / monitors don't work well with the intel HD4000, don't know if there is a pattern or a list of monitor models...
    - there was an issue with the color calibration on the HDMI output. No matter how much you tried to calibrate, the results remained unsatisfying. All light colors were crushed to white, wrong contrast, ...
You can read about this here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1482487
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4480354?start=0&tstart=0
The same firmware update improved this a little, good enough for me, but I can imagine it's not good enough if you do graphic work and need reliable colors from your monitor. On HDMI output, the thunderbolt/MDP output is fine. So it's mainly a dual monitor setup issue.
If it's for graphic work, I'd go for a Mac Book Pro with dedicated GPU !

  • Can I use an external graphics card over Thunderbolt?

Could anyone please tell me if I can use a graphics card with a Mac Pro 2013 over Thunderbolt using an expansion chassis? I have read that OS X doesn't support graphics cards over thunderbolt, however I've also read things that indicate it is possible.
I'm thinking of the using NVIDIA K5000 for Mac with aMagma Thunderbold to PCIe Expansion Chassis. Any help or advice appreciated. Thank you:)

Here is an article about Drivers that do just what you described, but for the NVIDIA 4000.
    http://mediapros.co.uk/portfolio-view/thunderbolterizer/
An important deficiency remains. You don't get near a 16x slot worth of bandwidth, so transfers to/from the card may be slow. But if you want this for GPU computation, it may be workable (if expensive).

  • Use of 2 graphic cards vs. one

I managed to get with my son at the office today and performed some limited testing to check out the new Premiere CC 2014 using a Sapphire Radeon HD 7950, Single and dual Nvidia K5000s in a MP5,1 and Dual D700s in a MP6,1. The results were interesting and revealing IMO.
All hardware was running latest 10.9.3.
The test goal was simply to Export a timeline (rendering implied here) on every graphic card combination.
Here's what hardware/software we had on hand
    1) A MP5,1 - 12core 2.93 GHz, 64GB RAM, 480GB PCIe SSD for OS/Apps, 240GB RAID-0 2x 3G SSDs for Application's cache, single 7950 driving 30" ACD, 23" ACD and 60" TV.
    2) A MP5,1 - 12core 2.93 GHz, 64GB RAM, 240GB PCIe SSD for OS/Apps, 240GB RAID-0 2x 3G SSDs for Application's cache, dual Nvidia K5000s in Slots 1 & 2 with Slot 2 driving a 27" Apple LCD.
    3) A MP6,1 - 12core 2.7 GHz, 64GB RAM, 1TB PCIe SSD, Dual D700s, 21:9 34" LG display, 23" ACD and 46" TV.
    4) Adobe Premiere CC 2014
We tested the MP5,1 that had dual K5000s, using both and using just one... using CUDA and OpenCL.
We used the MP5,1 with 7950 to test just OpenCL (CUDA not available with 7950).
We used the MP6,1 with dual D700s using OpenCL.
We used MP5,1 with the K5000s using CPUs (Software) for exporting the timeline.
    Times are Minutes:Seconds
    MP5,1 Dual K5000s, CUDA: 4:16
    MP5,1 Dual K5000s, OpenCL: 4:13
    MP5,1 Single K5000, CUDA: 4:15
    MP5,1 Single K5000, Software: 5:02
    MP5,1 Single 7950, OpenCL: 7:06
    MP6,1 Dual D700s, OpenCL: 3:31
    a) On the face of it the MP6,1 using Dual D700s did well against the dual K5000s in the MP5,1 -- 3:31 vs. 4:16.
    b) On the MP5,1 using Dual K5000s vs. Single K5000 was a wash. This surprised me and I wonder if there's a Preference configuration that needs to be explored/discovered. I presumed the Adobe software would be aware of there being two K5000s vs. one graphics card. I could not find anywhere in the Preference setting to indicate there were dual graphics cards and simply assumed Adobe software would know about it... so pressed on with the testing.
    c) On the MP5,1 using CUDA or OpenCL was a wash. They had essentially the same times.
    d) On the MP5,1 using CPUs for exporting took longer than using the graphic card.
    e) Using the MP5,1 and 7950 was considerably slower than using the dual or single K5000. Using 7950 took 7:06 vs. K5000 took 4:13. Thus K5000 was around 1.75 faster.
    f) Using the MP6,1 and dual D700s beat them all with a time of 3:31. Son & I were happy to see this result.
    Thus we have for OpenCL
    MP6,1 D700 at 3:31
    MP5,1 K5000 at 4:13
    MP5,1 7950 at 7:06
Son now has to decide on keeping a K5000 for one of his MP5,1s as it does run 1.75 times faster than the 7950.
Of course this was a very small limited set of tests, and more testing needs to be done.
BTW... Export times can be obtained from the Premiere NOTES so it's not necessary to keep an eye on the elapsed time for the exporting which goes poof when the export completes. The NOTES provides the "Encoding Time: 00:04:15" for example.
Do you have any advice or some insights on what further testing can be done with this hardware and Adobe software to expose the performance differences of these graphic cards. I have a limited time using these cards and will have to make decision what makes sense to keep and what to return.
I notice that today while the AMD Sapphire 7950's price sits at around $455, the Nvidia K5000 ranges from $1599 at OWC, $1799 at NewEgg, and to as much as $2499 at the online Apple Store.
Here's a graph of my results
Latest CUDA driver via System Prefs is installed.
I would have expected to see a difference between having 1x K5000 installed vs. having 2x K5000... but as I post above, there's no observed difference using CUDA or OpenCL. This tells me the 2nd K5000 is either not being seen or is ineffective for encoding the timeline. The System Profiler report clearly shows 2x K5000 discovered.
My decision of buying 2x K5000 vs. 1x K5000 vs. buying 1x Sapphire 7950 needs to be made within my 30 days return policy with OWC. Thus I'm anxious to make the most of this time by testing correctly.
If you or other have some other tests I should perform please post them here... thanks.
I had a chat with Adobe Tech Help concerning this 1x K5000 and 2x K5000 and was told that for encoding a timeline (exporting) the basic requirement for the graphics card is 1GB VRAM and not too much horsepower. This results in only 1 card being used and the 2nd one would be essentially doing nothing.
The time when 2x K5000s get used will be during project work being done and applying effects such as Color Grading and Warp stabilizing. In these cases the 2x K5000 would get heavy use and speed things along.
This then explains why my test showed identical encoding timeline times for 1x K5000 and 2x K5000s.
I will admit, my workflow moves along quite a bit faster using 1x K5000 and even better with 2x K5000s when compared to using the single Sapphire Radeon HD 7950.
I will be using the K5000s for rest of week and will compare this with what I know I can do using the 7950. Then make a decision what to keep and return.
BTW... when calling in for Tech Help the menu system mentioned that telephone help will soon be abandoned and users should use Chat and/or forums for help.... (sigh).

It is to bad that you could not test an nVidia GTX card, one good GTX 780 would put all those to shame.
Actually, he can.  The GTX780 can run at a low enough power draw that 5,1 Mac Pro should be able to power it.  And it can be modified by MacVidCards so that it shows the Apple boot screen and works properly at PCI-E v2.0 speeds.  I'd recommend to the OP to check the MacRumors forums, and look for the user named "MacVidCards".  Or find him on EBay.  His side business is modifying PC-based video cards such that they boot and work properly in Mac Pros.  You can buy a new GTX780 through NewEgg or AMZN, and have it sent directly to him.  He'll take it, modify it appropriately, and mail it directly to you.
All of that said, it won't beat the 6,1. ;-)

  • Anyone using the Ati Graphics Card 5770 with a Mac Pro 2.93Ghz (2009)

I would like to upgrade my stock Geforce Gt 120 cards in my Mac Pro 2.93Ghz 8 core (early 2009) to the Ati 5770 card which will be connected to 2 Apple 27inch Retina Displays.
I am aware that Apple states that the 5770 card is not compatible with the 2009 model but I have also read that Barefeats say this is not true and will work on the 2009 machines.
Having read numerous reports from people having problems when using the 5770 in there 2009 models such a faster fan speeds and excessive noise I really don't know what to do?....
Can anyone chime in with their experience and recommendations on the 5770 and also what Mac Pro model and OS version was used?.
I have looked at the Ati 5870 but it is a bit more than my current budget and my graphics power needs.
    Many Thanks
    Noodlez.

Very few problems. Some try to do something w/ the wrong dual link active adapters or to use HDMI or something else. I know of very few let alone "numerous" reports. But 10's of thousands of Mac Pro 1,1 and above love it and are fine and happy - and you need 10.6.5 (10.6.8 of course has a much improved driver whereas 10.6.4-1/2 was OEM and basic shoddy and not on the retail 10.6.3 DVD).
ML use to be trouble on a 2008 3,1 too. At this day and age unless you have PowerPC apps plugins or drivers and hardware 10.8.3 is the way to go. And 10.8.3 opens up more graphic card choices too. Nvidia GTX series or AMD 79xx and EVGA has Mac Edition as does AMD have 7950.
    Barefeasts.com has test results
I think you want to double check but "RETINA" is a MacBook Pro only and might be thinking of Thunderbolt, which will not connect to a Mac Pro. There still is a non-Thunderbolt 27" which is.

  • Creative Cloud background service constantly uses high-performance graphics card on MacBook Pro

On my MacBook Pro mid-2010, I recently noticed that the high-performance graphics card for some reason was constantly on. In MacBooks as of 2009, there are two graphics cards that can be used, one integrated, one PCIe. The integrated one is less powerful, but is used to preserve battery. The other one is enabled when there is a high demand for graphics power.
I saw that when the Creative Cloud service (with this I mean the general software package that tracks for updates and syncs fonts and files) was loaded into the system, the MacBook automatically starts using this high-performance graphics card, even without any other software running, just freshly from boot. This, of course, drains battery and I don't think that much power is needed to run a background service. The only way to stop the high-performance graphics card from kicking in, is by terminating the complete Creative Cloud service, which is of course not very useful when you use the sync feature a lot.
Is there a solution for this problem, or can you release an update of the software that addressess this issue?
If I need to provide you with logs or other relevant information, please let me know.
Thanks in advance, it's kind of annoying as it is now.
    Ruben Delil

Same here. Macbook Retina 15", purchased earlier this year.
Nice (and free) utility to monitor GPU-usage is:
    gfxCardStatus from http://gfx.io/
Helped me to notice that it's better to quit Photoshop if not using it because it still uses the nVidia GPU if Photoshop is not even the active application (eg. running in the background).
But still, sometimes after closing Photoshop, gfxCardStatus says that nVidia GPU is in use for process 'Creative Cloud'.
I'm mostly running on battery and nVidia GPU consumes much, much more battery than the integrated, Intel HD Graphics 4000 so this is a big issue for me.

  • PrEL 2 or 7? and can PrEL use a good graphics card

I am using PrEl 2 at the moment on a P4 computer which are getting slow (also using Photoshop elements)
what is the benifit of upgrading to PrEl 7 and PES7?
if I buy a new motherboard and graphics card - is there some GPU functions that PrEL can use to make rendering etc faster?

In addition to Steve's tips above, here are some thoughts on your proposal:
1.) graphics card vs chip - most intel on-board graphics chips are minimal at best. I'd suggest going with an inexpensive card, and probably a lower-end ATI. I use more nVidia cards on my systems, but lately people have been having all sorts of issues, especially with the recent nVidia drivers. Guess that I am just lucky. At the same time, ATI's are getting high marks.
2.) your I/O is very important, as you state. I feel that 2 physical (no partitions!) HDD's is the minimum and three will be even better. As for SSD, I feel the price vs performance is still not even close. Maybe next generation (next week - next month - next year?), but not yet. Though a RAID configuration will likely be faster (depends on how one sets up their array), I would advise against using one for the system HDD. I would only consider them for media discs if one did any configuration ending in 0, i.e. 0, 30, 50.
3.) as for RAM, and taking Steve's comments to heart, I'd stick with XP, or Vista 32-bit for the OS, so you will be limited to 4GB RAM, knowing that your OS will only be able to use ~ 3.4GB of that. Depending on the application, the rest might not be totally wasted, but you will get that >3GB usage, and that would be worth it to me, even if ~ 0.6GB goes to "waste." All of my machines are running XP-Pro 32-bit w/ 4GB RAM. Some with the 3GB switch, and some without it.
4.) if you do go with the new MoBo, CPU and say 3x HDD's, pay close attention to your PSU (Power Suppy), and make sure that it can handle the new CPU, plus any/all HDD's. This is often overlooked, when one is upgrading.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Tecra S2 - Other graphic card than Nvidia Go 6600 ?

    Goode evening,
What else does fit into an Tecra S2, except the original Nvidia Tecra S2?
By the way, does anyone know the price for a new Go 6600? Is it still available? I can only find it on eBay.
    Many thanks,
    Ben

    Hello both,
    Many thanks for your help.
    @Akuma,
I can do it myself, installing the new graphic card. But thanks for the tip with the ASP.
    @Xardas,
I think the FAQ you posted is then not right. In the Tecra S2 you can disassemble the graphic card, here an example:
    http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130336008332
EDIT: I already did it myself, it's only 3 screws, the big connector to the mainboard and a smaller to the LCD. Well, before that you have to disassemble the whole laptop from the button and top, unscrew all F3..F14 screws and finally take off the upper part including the LCD. But it can be done, I also discovered it while doing it :)
    Greetings,
    Ben

    Can anybody help!!!
Hi, OS MCE 2005 (Fully Patched) I have tested my system with 3 fully working ATI Radeon Cards (9800Pro, 5550 & 9200SE) all cards crash when entering Media Centre GUI or using any 3D app (e.g 3DMark 2003). I have fitted an NVIDIA 5900XP and the system runs 100% stable. I have a fresh install of OS, .NET ,Motherboard & latest ATI Drivers (V5.10) drivers. I have even fitted a replaced the motherboard (MSI K8MM-V. Is there a fix or are ATI cards incompatible with this motherboard/chipset. Any advice greatly received.

I flashed to 9.20 and my video went in the crapper and the computer became unstable, unusable really .  I had crashing with my 9800 Pro and installed a 9200 and it worked fine.  I read on another topic to change some BIOS setting, for me it was turning off the spread spectrum under the cell settings that changed everything .  Once that happened, about 5 minutes ago, I booted for the first time in a week and the 9800 Pro appears to be working fine.
    Look at this link...https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=89456.0
Props to Tiresmoke for the fix
If it works, let the forum know so other can figure this out as well.

  • Can I play games on my MacBook Pro by using an external graphics card and using windows via a software called "Parallels Desktop" or do I have to use Boot Camp (I have both installed)

Can I use Windows Parallel to play games? I mean will it not get enough power? Like I clearly remember that I read some where one my system that the Paralels is getting only 1 GB of my ram. I have the mid 2012 MacBook Pro, the $1500 one.

You shouldn't use Parallels to pay games. If you want to play games you need to install Windows via Bootcamp so that it has access to all the resources available.

When I try to use the Oil Paint filter tool I receive an error claiming that an "uknown graphics processor error" had occured. I then checked under my preferences and Photoshop is not using the correct graphics card. Is there a way for me to fix this problem so that I can use photoshop? I have a switchable radeon graphics card in my computer and use catalyst control center to manage it.
