Use of .png files in Photoshop

I use Fireworks to create graphics using layers with each element on its own layer.
When I send them to some companies, they state that a .png file cannot be edited by photoshop, and that the file has only one layer.
Can anyone answer a few questions about .png and Photoshop?
1. Can Photoshop read and edit .png files?
If so,
          a. Must the layers be unlocked for them to be read as individual layers?
          b. When they have been edited in Photoshop, can they still have seperate layers that can be read in Fireworks?
All help would be appreciated.

This is very interesting.
My .png files created by Fireworks always contain layers (at least Fireworks describes them as layers) unless I delberately select a group of layers and "flatten" them, in which case they combine into one layer.
At this link is a ,png file created in fireworks containg three layers and saved in .png format.
At this link is the same file saved as a .psd file by Fireworks.
I cannot open the .psd file, as I cannot afford to purchase Photoshop.
If I try to save as a .tiff file, I am warned that all layers and vectors will be turned into a single bitmap.
I believe that this was not always the case, but could be wrong.
Perhaps one of you could try to open these files using Photoshop and tell me if they contain any layers, and if so are they editable?
There are no options given in Fireworks when saving in the .psd format with regard to transparency or otherwise. (Fireworks CS4).

  • Using a .png file as OLE objet

I am trying to use a png file in my report.  I have it linked in but it only will display the file name.  If I use the same file converted to pdf, it works perfect.  is there a switch somewhere that defines what ole objects can be used?  i need to use a png and not the pdf.  Have same issue with bmp and jpg as well.  Need to make png work.

  • Can't open PNG files in Photoshop CS5...??

I'm seeing lots of threads with this problem but none of them seem to have an answer.
For some reason right now when I try to open a PNG file in Photoshop it just crashes.  I end up with a neverending "hour glass".
I had all of my website project directories on a network share.  As I'm no longer sharing all of these files with an office of people I decided to move all of these project files back to my own local machine.  Ever since I've done that I can't open PNG files in Photoshop anymore.
Any information on what could have caused this, or more importantly, how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

I was able to edit PNG files just fine up until today, and the only thing I've done is move the files from the network share to my local hard drive.
Any PNG, large or small won't work right now.  All of the other threads I see where people are talking about this say it's happening with their GIF files, too.  I just tried one here and the same thing happened.  From within Photoshop I did File -> Open, browsed to my image directory and the moment I clicked on one of the GIF files it locked up.
So yeah, I'm certain it's isolated to my machine right now.  I just have no idea at all what could possibly be causing this.  The other threads are mentioning netework shares, too, but usually still trying to open over the network.  In my case it was working fine when I did it over the network, but now that I'm opening local files it's failing.

getting error could not place the document because there is not enough memory RAM wile importing .png file into Photoshop cc

Without knowing anything about your system, your image file, your working document and so on nobody can even begin to guess. The file could be damaged, there could be color management issues at play and what have you...

  • Cannot open .png file in PhotoShop Elements 9

    Hello,
I am unable to open a .png file on a PC with the following dimmensions:
    Width: 4070
    Height: 32305
I get the following error when I try to open to image file with PSE 9:
"could not complete request because of a problem with the file-format module interface"
The file was created on a Mac in Photoshop. However, Another employee was able to open the file on a PC in Photoshop CS.
She received the following message when she opened the file:
"The document Aplan_top5%_heatmap.png has an embedded color profile that does not match the RGB working space. The embedded profile will be used instead of the working one.
    Embedded Profile: Generic RGB profile
    Working Profile: sRGB Ie61966-2.1"
Can anyone explain to me why another employee can open the .png file in Adobe Photoshop CS (way older version) and not in PSE9?
Thanks for any assistance that you can provide.

If the pixel dimensions your gave are right W 4070 x H 32305,
then the document is too big for pse9.
Elements will only open documents of 30,000 pixels on less,
either width or height. In other words if the document size is greater than 30,000
pixels in width or 30.000 pixels in height, photoshop elements won't open the file.
Newer versions of the full photoshop can handle documents of 300,000 pixels.

  • Cloud storage - how can I use my .png file shared in "public mode" like a hosted file ?

    Hi every body,
I am french and new on the forum so please be indulgent ! (for my english and my questions).
I am working on HTML signature for my company and I have a little problem.
to be viewed, my .png files needs to be on a server. So I remember that adobe gave me a 100giga storage for me to use.
    Cool !
But the problem is that the link only send me to a special view of my file... a jpeg one. So when I try to copy the url I can only use the .jpg
    I want my file !
So my question is : is it possible that the cloud storage isn't supposed to share any thing else than a miniature of my file and a download button ?
How can I use it for my signature if I can't acess it but only download it?
Thank you very much for your time
    Morgan

    Hi Morgan,
You are correct.  Public link sharing works as follows:
    -  you can share a public URL to your PNG file on Creative Cloud.  The recipient of the URL can view a preview of the file and download the file in the original PNG format or JPG format.
    -  it is not possible to give other users direct access to the original file in Creative Cloud.

  • How can I be sure I can use the audio file in photoshop

How do you use music from Itunes in photo shop, I keep getting the codec error

I can't find any authoritative list of audio formats that Photoshop Elements 10 will support, so this is probably a question you'll need to take up in Adobe's forums:
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop_elements
It's not an iTunes issue, anyway. All I can suggest is that you make sure that the tracks you're trying to use in Elements aren't from the iTunes Store from more than a couple of years ago in which case they may be copy-protected.
    Regards.

  • Photoshop won't open .png files

I had a trial version of Illustrator on my computer and when I went to open a .png file in Photoshop, it automatically opened it in Illustrator. Since I don't know enough about Illustrator to move the open .png file from AI to PS, I deleted the trial version. Now the .png doesn't open in anything but Paint. It doesn't give me the opportunity to browse for other programs to open it with. How do I get it to open in Photoshop again, please? Thanks very much for your help.

That didn't solve it for me. Trying to open a PNG file, with PS association, I got: "file-format module cannot parse the file."
    I installed a PNG plug-in. It didn't help.
I created the file, but don't have much control over it; it's from a web cam.

  • Placing a PNG file with transparency

If I have a psd / Png file on Photoshop that has text with no background (transparent), and I do a Place of that file into Illustrator, I get a white background in additiotion to the Text.
How do I stop the white background from placing withing the Illustrator? I have Illustrator CS3 and Photoshop CS3
    Thanks in advance.
    Bob

Half a decade later, I am getting the same problem as the original poster   (although I am using Illustrator CC 64bit on Windows 8).
I am trying to 'place' a PNG graphic in Illustrator, The PNG has a transparent background, which is being honoured fine in other programs (e.g. web browsers - even in its icon in Windows Explorer).
However when I place it in Illustrator, the transparency doesn't work: instead the background is displayed as an opaque colour. It stays that way if I output to a PDF from Illustrator.
The PNG in question is a 'paletted' type (I think it has a palette of 256 colours) - one of which is set to be transparent.
Does Adobe Illustrator not support transparency in paletted PNG files?
(I'm aware that you can generate a 24-bit PNG with the transparency done as an 'alpha channel'), but this is wasteful for many simple types of graphic, creating a much bigger PNG file size.

  • How do I Batch Convert JPEG to PNG files?

Any idea how I would convert a large number of jpeg's to png files in Photoshop CC?

You could do it like this: http://www.santoshgs.com/blog/189/how-to-batch-convert-png-to-jpeg-using-photoshop-cs2/
But can I be honest? I'd do that with a more efficient and far faster conversion utility like IrfanView. Photoshop is incredibly slow for this type of work. For example, I did a quick test to demonstrate the difference in performance:
folder with 10 images in jpg format, 5600px by 5600px. Simple jpg to png batch.
    Photoshop: over six minutes.
IrfanView: one minute and 40 seconds.
That's a rather big difference - and with large numbers of images I just do not have the time to wait for Photoshop to finish the job. It's too slow.
Another issue is that during the conversion process Photoshop cannot be used - while with a simple conversion utility you can leave it running in the background, and continue to use PS for other work if required. This matters if you have hundreds of images to convert.
Btw, Irfanview (windows only) is free to download @ http://www.irfanview.com/
The batch processing you can find under File-->Batch Conversion <b>
ImageMagick is also free and open source. It is a command line tool, and easy to use for conversions. Will also work on a mac. But it is much slower than IrfanView, a tad faster than PS.

  • How to make png files right dimension out of PP?

    Hi
Is there a way to export a PNG file of every powerpoint slide other than making it 720 x 540? I need 720x 486 but PP seems to constrain the dimensions to where I can't make it 720x486.
Using latest FCP 7 and MS PP 2008.

in PPt go to File >Page Setup
    set slides to landscape
    width 19.1
    height 12.9
you will need to play around with width and height, just a few decimals up probably
the graphics card in the machine controls these settings and you will need to fine tune
bring the png file into photoshop and check the size in Image> image size
if the pixel size is larger or smaller than the NTSC needed, change in PPt page set up until its correct
this is pain to change but once you find the setting that corresponds to NTSC just it works fine
