Use of scroll button on mouse?

Child just got a macbook air for school's laptop program. Get ready for an endless stream of stupid questions as I try to work with Apple software and hardware. First one: I want to get her a mouse. I see in the Apple store, Apple mice with only two buttons, and a Logitech (now that is a familar name) mouse with two buttons and a middle scroll wheel.
I'd rather not give her a mouse with a scroll bar right in the middle, that is useless. It would only serve as a distraction, whether or not the drivers can get the mouse itself to work.
Is there any use/function in OSX for a middle scroll wheel?
FWIW, this is for OSX 10.9.1.

No questions are stupid.   People ask because they don't know the answer; I'm glad you have enough confidence in Apple's forums to ask here.
The Apple Magic mouse performs all the functions that will be required.   As for any other supplier; Logitech is well regarded here.
Why a centrally situated scroll wheel could be a distraction, I don't know.   Whether the scrolling is performed by a wheel or a finger gesture is quite irrelevant.   It is a necessary function.
As you know, you need to connect it via Bluetooth.

I installed FreeWheel on my Windows XP platform, and in a running form, I can get the mouse wheel to scroll -- but if a form has several scrolling blocks, it seems to favor the last block. To get some blocks to scroll, I had to click in an item in the block, then hold the mouse within the scrollbar area, then the mouse wheel scrolled the rows.

Small scroll button on mouse...

Wondering if I have to replace my mouse...or a way to clean or fix it?
The small finger scroll button scrolls up...but does not scroll down. I went into preferences, and nothing is changed as options. Shouldn't be anyway, my wife wouldn't know how to change it, and I certainly didn't.
On a 20" monitor...gets kinda to be a drag to have to move over to the right and scroll the manual down feature. Any ideas what might be happening? Or just time to replace it...?

I had the same thing with my Mighty Mouse and was able to clean it with a baby wipe (for some reason, this got me the best result). It is typically just the normal dust and oil build up, but if you don't clean it when you see it happening, it can make it difficult (I did have one I neglected too long and I was never able to get the scrolling to work properly again). If you use the baby wipe to roll around the scroll button, being sure it rotates fully and that all sides are getting cleaned this usually works for me.

Why wont Illustrator CC let me use Alt + Scroll on my mouse to zoom in and out smoothly?

When i use Illustrator CS6 i am able to zoom in and out smothly by pressing my option key on my Mac and then scroll with my mouse. It wont let me do that in Illustrator CC, why not? Also i should not that this zoom does not use the zoom tool on the left hand tool bar.

Did Option+mouse scroll ever zoom smoothly? (Wish it did.)
For me it zooms in hops: 50, 66.67, 100, 150, 200 etc. same as when you click with the zoom tool.
You can of course enter exact zoom %s at the bottom left of the Illie window but that’s not smooth either.

Firefox keeps crashing while using the scroll button on my mouse but only on facebook Why?

using facebook on firefox is a nightmare. When i scroll through my news feed it just crashes out of the blue i can take a video if necessary and upload it. I have already made a new profile before and it hasnt worked and in safe mode it still crashes. Its getting annoying it has been going on for months and still no fix in sight. I use all the betas to see if maybe it changes but it doesn't. I even use the stable versions and nothing. I have cleaned all temp files I do not have flash hardware acceleration on and do not have hardware acceleration on in firefox at all it makes my text weird and my graphic card drivers are updated. I do not know what to do anymore this is the only site it crashes on and I refuse to use internet explorer or chrome so please please please fix this. I only use Fast dial and a plugin for youtube but like I said in safe mode it still crashes so Its not the addons.

I updated to firefox 4 on my laptop (a touchscreen capable HP tx2z) and now I can't use the scroll on my mouse pad, I have to use my touch screen to scroll.

My computer is running windows 7, it's an HP tx2z touch screen laptop. My mouse pad scroll doesn't work on firefox 4. Also some features seem to missing such as the condensed menu bar and tab sorting that was spoken about in the introduction to firefox 4 video.

Apparently it's related to the Firefox plug in.
This isn't exactly a solution but more of a way to avoid opening PDFs with Firefox's plug in.
1. Highlight "Tools" from the Menu Bar in the top left of the screen (or click "Options" if using the Firefox Compact Menu)
2. Select to "Options
3. Select "Applications"
4. Look for "Adobe Acrobat Document" under Content Type and to the right under Action select "Use Adobe Reader (default)" instead of the using Adobe Acrobat in Firefox
5. Open a test PDF. It should open in it's own window now.
Again, not a complete solution but something that'll at least let you scroll with PDFs open.

Tabs won't open when I'm clicking the "+" button by the tabs or when I do "ctrl t" . Only opens a new tab when I use the middle button on mouse to click on a link.

Scroll button zoom

Updating to 10.4.9 seems to have lost me the ability to zoom using the scroll button on my wireless mighty mouse.
Any input would be very welcome.

Have you tried deleting the associated preferences file? It's:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.driver.AppleHIDMouse.plist
Where the "~/" is your home directory.

Scroll button bug

I am having a problem using the scroll button on an Apple mouse in Finder windows (Mac OS X 10.4.8). The button will not scroll up a finder window, although it will scroll down and across. Has anyone come across this problem? It was working correctly until 2 days ago, although occasionally, scrolling would fail altogether for a few minutes.

Laptop touchpad scroll button doesn't work in Firefox but works in other progs. I have tried changing mousewheel.withnokey settings as per Firefox help.

I have an Acer Laptop Aspire 1690
I've installed the latest driver from the Acer website.
I can use the scroll button ok in outlook express, internet explorer, adobe pdf reader, etc but not in firefox.
I've searched the help in here and tried changing the mousewheel.withnokey settings. But still not working.
Any ideas?

Try this :
For all who have problem with the standard ALPS touchpad driver in firefox 4; here is a quick registry fix: 1) Open registry with regedit 2) Search for following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Alps\Apoint 3) Set ScrMethod to 1 4) Reboot
After that scrolling in FF4 should be possible.

I had been downloading from that site for many times but from PC. When I use the left button on mouse it will take me to the internet player on my PC but if I use the right button I have to choose 'save file as' and then I save it.
But on MACbook when I use two fingers on my trackpad there is only few options like and one of them is 'save link as' but not 'save file as'
