Use of sidechains in ultrabeat

I confess some confusion after trying to use sidechains in Ultrabeat. Page 566 of Logic Studio Instruments and Effects (Logic 8) says: "Note: A side chain audio signal alone is not enough to trigger Ultrabeat’s processors. To hear the side chain audio signal Ultrabeat needs to be triggered by MIDI or its internal step sequencer."
I can't tell if I am doing something wrong, but when I set the sidechain as "input 1" (which is a midi piano) and populate it with midi signals, and then direct the Ultrabeat track (track 11) to use input 1 as the sidechain, I cannot tell any difference between that setup and no sidechain. Track 11 has Osc 1 set to side chain and its turned on.
What am I missing?

The most obvious thing that comes to mind is that you've asked your question in the wrong forum.

  • Using exs24 samples in ultrabeat

I'm trying to make a kit on Ultrabeat using a combination of samples from the exs24--the trouble is, everytime I load a sample and play it in Ultrabeat it sounds different from the preview. I'm assuming this is because other Ultrabeat functions are active, so I've tried to turn everything off but I'm still getting different sounds. Is there a simple way to load the sample and have all other Ultrabeat parameters off so I can just get the original sample sound?

Create yourself a blank default kit to start with. I think you can download one from LogicProHelp.com.
All you need to do is turn all modules off except the sample playback oscillator, null the pitch to zero and have sensible envelopes and so on. Copy that to all notes, and save the kit.
Now you just select a note and load a sample to play it.

  • Can barely hear the results in SpaceDesigner when used as Sidechain??

Hey guys I have a question, when I slap a Space Designer in an Aux channel and use it as a send effect to a track why is it that I can hardly hear the difference? But when I put a compressor on the Aux channel right after the Space Designer I can then hear the difference?
So ya. I'm sure something is not right, I shouldn't have to put a compressor everytime i wanna use a Reverb....right??

What might be going wrong is if you also set space designer to an amount of 'dry' signal (upper right 1/4 circular fader). Normally, if you set the amount of reverb in SD to -10 dB and the dry amount to -∞ dB, and the send level between -10 and 0, you'll get a noticeable amount of reverb.
So there are three ways to increase the amount of reverb: increasing the send level, increasing the ampount of 'wet' in SD, or upping the fader on the bus itself. I tend to use that initially, as it keeps the reverbs proportional when multiple tracks send to it. The 'wet' fader in SD basically does the same, but I like to park that around -6dB and balance it by using the AUX fader and of course the different send levels.
O, and another tip: listen to reverb levels thru speakers, not thru headphones. It can sound okay via headphones, but then the monitors can reveal you are actually drowning things in reverb. I treat it as a spice: you should only notice it when it is gone, it should (generally) not dominate the mix.
    hope this enlightens a little,
    regards, Erik.

  • Using ultrabeat presets from L8

As there any chance of using the presets on ultrabeat from Logic 8 on Logic 7?
    Best

    Sorry for insisting.
I used L8 for a little but i dint like so i went back to L7, but now some how i cant use Ultrabeat presets no more since i install L8.
I can see the presets but but wen i choose nothing happens.
    Many thanks in advance.

  • 3-rd party Plugins & Sidechain

I wonder if there is a way how to use the sidechain effect with 3-rd party plugin that does not have the sidechain option. Some 3-rd party plugins have the sidechain input options, but some do not
The obvious example: kick and bass guit.
Say I use a compressor from Duende Channelstrip or MetricHalo Channelstrip on the bass track (or Bus) and I want my Kick track as the sidechain input of the compressor I am using on Bass track or Bus - but this compressor has no sidechain option...
In Cubase/Nuendo there is a trick with creating Quad Group channels and routing of theese, Sonar users are sending one track panned hard left and second hard right to a Stereo Bus and the left channel triggers the right channel etc....
Any kind of a trick how to achieve this with Logic?

I have'nt attempt this, has yet but whether or not a
    plugin has sidechain feature,
it can be-side chain in manys ways,
One way could be, using the Plugin on the bus/Chanell.
    Another way gould be,
to use certain sound-card, some of which, Drivers, can use as an insert, to groups/or channels, out and inside of L.P.
I swear it can be done using Mastero of Apogee & R.M.E. Fire-Face 800 settings.

  • Problem with step mode in ultrabeat

I use step mode in ultrabeat (when everything becomes yellow). Lots of tweaks are done in step mode, and everything sounds correctly. But after reopen the project some voices sounds like they are in voice mode, not in step mode, even if the step mode is on.
This problem could be fixed by clicking on that voices. But there are 25 of them, it is really annoying. Could some one tell me, why does it happen? Thank you…

    Hi,
Ultrabeat is not so much a sample player, but more a synthesizer. Your squeek probably has to do with the synth parameters of that sound in UB.
This guy (David Earl aka SFLogicNinja) explains it well:

  • Sculpture Sidechain

Sorry if this has been asked before.
How do you use a sidechain to modulate the amplitude envelope? Can you modulate anything else with the sidechain and how?

This topic comes up fairly frequently, and is most often a misunderstanding or lack of knowledge about what it is you are trying to achieve.
Sending a sidechain signal into Sculture means that you can use the audio signal as a modulator in the synth - mostly to excite the string according to your audio souce.
It doesn't turn Sculture into a guitar-synth, for example.
To do this, you should set the output of the guitar track to "No Output", so it can't be heard through the mixer (do not simply mute the channel).
Now on the audio instrument that Sculture is on, select your guitar audio track as the sidechain signal, and select the external/sidechain input in one of the string modulators - you'll need to play with the exciter strength. Now as you play Sculture with MIDI notes, the guitar audio will be affecting Sculpture's string.

  • Multiple outputs with Ultrabeat

    Hi,
Is there a way to use multiple-outputs with Ultrabeat in Mainstage like you can in Logic Studio?

    Yes.
In Mainstage insert a Multi-output version of UB on a channel strip. In UB assign outputts to the voices. In the Channels strip area click on the + button on the UB Channel strip. It will create Aux's with UB outputs as their inputs.

  • Apple Loops in Mainstage?

I'm very new to Logic software. I noticed that all the Apple Loops are easily accessible in Logic but not MainStage. Is there any way I can use them in MainStage? I tried exporting tracks as WAV and AIFF files but then couldn't figure out how to import them to use in MainStage. If Apple Loops can't be used in MainStage, is there a way to make, say, an atmospheric sound keep playing until you stop it from just one touch of the keyboard?

Thank you. So, using MainStage as a live instrument, I'd like to play some of the great sound effects (wind/water/dog) and atmospheres I can find in Logic Pro under Loops. Is there any way to access these with MainStage? It would be a pity not to be able to for live performance, but if it's not possible, are you suggesting that I create the atmospheres for myself using the EX24 and Ultrabeat, or are you suggesting that there may be a way to use those software instruments to create loops of the sounds that are available in MainStage?
    thanks!

  • Logic 9 - hanging notes after stop

Everytime i stop an arrange, all the pads, basses etc keep playing (they just hang on the note where i stopped it.)
its like 'note off when stop' is not working ...
    any ideas ?

    OlavB wrote:

So it seems. The cassandra effect...
The hanging notes are caused by using the sidechain! Even deactivated plugins will cause this. Take out the sidechain and it's fine.
Yeah, I fiddled with it, but it is a very unpredictable bug. Sometimes they hang, sometimes they don't. Also, sending a reset message (all note off, CC123) from my MIDI keyboard doesn't work. As if the problem is 'beyond midi' somehow.
It is strange , this behaviour, since you would expect the sidechain to have nothing to do with MIDI in the first place, it sidechains audio...
Do you happen to know how old this bug is?

  • Are you looking for BIG Rhythmic Synth lines?

For those of you into Trance/Techno. Here is an excellent tip that a lot of you will know but for those that don't.....
    1) Choose a Nice PAD sound from the EXS24 library on Audio Instrument Track 1. For this example choose Analog Pads>Matrix12Strings.
    2) Set up a loop for 4 bars.
    3) Put in a distinct Rhythmic Apple loop on Audio Track 1, filling the 4 bar loop (For this I suggest a 'Cowbell Groove 01' from the Garage Band Loop Library for easy results).
    4) MUTE the chosen Loop in either the Environment OR the Audio Mixer - Do not MUTE the Arrange.
    5) Insert a 'Noise Gate' into the EXS24 Track.
    6) Set Attack to 2 ms, Hold to 100ms, Release to 80 ms, Then Slide the Threshold up to 20dB. Lookahead 0ms, Hysteresis -3dB. High Cut 20000Hz. Low Cut 20Hz. Select SideChain>Track 1 at the top of the Noise Gate menu.
    7) Insert a Stereo Delay or Send it to a bus. Use the 'Double Pan Delay' preset for the sake of this demo.
Now Play your EXS24 Pad Track and chill out at 90 bpm or get the bangin' choons at 130bpm. Loads of Fun - Now you know why Oakenfold/Sasha/Transeau sounded so good in the 90's......
    Cheers

good to see people discovering good ol tricks of the trade for themselves..
here's another one, good for dance music of many genres:
use a compressor with sidechain. key the sidechain to the kick drum, or to some other significant, strong rhythmic element like a loop or percussion part. put this compressor on a pad sound and play with threshold levels, attack and release till you get a nice pumping effect on the sound that works rhythmically.
also, don't just limit yourself to using this on simple pad sounds.. make an effects bus with a nice chain of flangey/phasey/long delay stuff on it, and send a whole bunch of tracks to it, as you would normally.. then, try a limiter or compressor on it, sidechained as described above. now you start getting that expensive, "how do they make it all sound so rich and full, yet punchy and rhythmic" sound.. very good especially in rich, fat, washy deep and progressive house styles, but also works a treat on more electronic styles like trance and the very plastic electro house stuff coming out these days too.
basically, the key (pardon the pun) is to find clever uses of sidechained effects, because it makes the elements of your mix interact organically and responsively, and just plain sound expensive and classy.

  • Can't believe this please help

After two days and long nights, I finally completed a really good track I really love. For the drums I used logics internal instruments, Ultrabeat and EXS24.
For the horns and strings I used the external instruments from my Roland Keyboard. After mixing the track down I decided to burn it to a cd. To my surprise the only instruments I recorded or was able to hear on the cd was Logics internal instruments. What the ****, I could not believe it. What am I doing wrong. Please Help anyone, thanks.

There is also a couple of ways to bounce your midi tracks without recording them on to an audio track. When I work with outboard midi gear and audio together, I send the synth into logic for monitoring to and input track. you can bounce that in real time, not off-line, along with your audio and instruments tracks.
in your environment create an audio object, double click it to view it as a channel strip. in the parameters box, under channel, you will select input channel instead of an output channel. select the stereo input you want to send your synth to. Assign the outputs to your main outs. From this channel you can monitor your outboard synth in Logic. And when you bounce in real time this input is sent to your outputs along with your VI’s and audio tracks
you can also do the same thing with an audio instrument channel. in the box (I/O) where you select your instrument choose External. and when the box pops up, select the inputs you want to use just like the input object. now you can monitor your outboard synths here also. you can also add track automation and plug in fx to this track as well.

  • Redirecting audio from Bus1 to harmony plugin

I have just installed the Antares Harmony Engine as AU plugin. The software comes with an LSO file to show people smarter than me how to set up everything.
The vocal track output is Bus1. The harmony engine is on 3 software instrument tracks with midi data (the 3 harmony parts)
I have tried to sort out the environment, but I'm not able to copy the setup. I'm unable to figure out how they route the audio from Bus1 to the software instrument tracks!
The plugin documentation just refers to the Logic documentation - and I'm stuck
    Thanks for your patience

  • Can I Pan a single midi note

Is it possible to pan a single midi note in the matrix viewer in Logic? When I edit my midi data in the matrix I sometimes want to pan certain notes left or right but I can't figure out how to do it? This would especially helpful when editing drum loops so I can pan hi hat or certain sounds to certain positions.

to add to another post on this thread. if you are using the exs24 multi-channel insert you can assign different sound as aux channel inputs. this will allow you to pan your cymbals as you wish.
you can also use a multi-channel ultrabeat to do the same. next to the pan button for the instrument in ultrabeat you will see the word main. click on that and then you can assign an output for that specific sample.
from there you can go to an aux channel and assign the input of the aux to the ultrabeat or exs multi-channel output, and put effects, pans, volume and such.
    very usefull.

  • Need Powerbook G4 and Logic 7.1 Optimization advice

    Hello Logic/Mac Users,
I need optimization advice for my portable logic setup.
I've got a PB G4 with a gig of ram, a Firewire 410, and some soft synths.
My goals are basically to come up with a few tracks of ideas, nothing too grand.
I basically want to use one track for Ultrabeat,
another two for a couple of soft synths like the G-Force stuff.
and Finally to plug in some bass guitar stuff via a Bass Pod Xt into the firewire device.
any tips on how to get the most out of this existing setup would be very appreciated.
I'm reading the manuals and playing with the tutorial tunes but any tips to expedite would be cool also.
Also any suggestions on how to max out performance on the powerbook would be great.

    Hi Stereovibe,
Your powerbook G4 could record some audio tracks but don't count on
adding plug-ins and instruments on top. A G4 processor is simply too slow
to process and run Logic Pro 8 smoothly. Don't put too much money upgrading since
you will not see a major speed bump doing so. I would keep my money and put towards
a Macbook Pro dual core, used or new.
    My 2 cents,
    Marc
