Use of sim card for making calls

Hi, I've got the new iPod, and I would like to know how do I make calls from the Ipad? Thnx

If you wish to use a cellular data connection, you need to go into your settings and purchase and enable a cellular data plan with whichever provider supports your SIM card.
All that does though is enable a data connection over 3G or LTE (if available) - it does not enable voice calling as the device cannot do that.  You would need to use a voice over IP app, which will use data minutes from your data plan.
If you use a VOIP app with a wifi connection, the SIM card has nothing to do with that at all.

  • IPhone 3GS - Can I use existing US t-mobile SIM and German O2 SIM cards (for phone calls) without buying a data plan?

I currently use 2 phones to make calls: one t-mobile locked phone for the US and one O2 locked phone for Germany, both without data plan.
Can I upgrade using just one phone (factory unlocked iPhone 3GS)  and continue to use the existing SIM cards for phone calls (just switching the SIM cards when necessary), but use free WIFI spots worldwide for internet access/data transfer?
    Thanks Michael

No supported carrier, including T-Mobile in the U.S., permits the use of an iPhone without a data plan. Though it's technically possible to do it, if and when they find you, they will either charge you for a data plan or shut down your account.

  • Can you use an iphone in Haiti using a SIM card for airtime?

Can you use a SIM card for airtime minutes in an iphone in Haiti?

You will need the SIM card that was used when the iPhone was activated in order to restore the iPhone with iTunes if wanted or needed.
If you have an activated SIM card with the same carrier the iPhone was sold as carrier locked with, you can use that SIM card with a restore.

  • Can I use a SIM card for my activated I phone on a locked phone

I recently lost my I phone 5 , I called claims reported it as stolen then I just found it today I was wondering if I took the SIM card out of the replacement can I use it on the phone they locked

What I mean by locked , is that Verizon locked my I phones serial number , so they stuck it on a "blacklist" I was wondering if it would be possible if I used a different SIM card if the phone would still be workable or is it junk

  • Hi Guys, Im getting a secnond-hand Iphone 4S and im going to use it as an ipod. How will i set it up if i dont want a SIM Card?? And if i use a SIM card for the activation then can i take it out??

Hi Guys, so im getting an iphone 4S as a hamy-down and im gonna use it as an ipod without a SIM Card. Im going to put my backup data on it from my old device. How will I activate it? Can i use my family members SIM (SIM that has been used in an iPhone before) to activate it,  then can i take it out and use it without a SIM.
    Regards, PulseSol

You can't activate any GSM iPhone without a valid sim card installed. So, yes, you'll need a sim card to activate the phone. The sim itself need not be activated, but it must be valid & present. While you can remove it, after the phone is activated, I recommend you don't. If you ever need to restore the phone, or update the iOS, you'll need a sim card installed to do so.
Make sure whoever is furnishing the phone to you, follows the directions here, before you get the phone:

  • Using local SIM card abroad (ATT iPhone5)

Using ATT iPhone 5, latest iOS.  Taking my iPhone to France for a month, will use it as a camera and to make local phone calls.  Have my iPad mini for email, surf the web on wifi, etc. I have used local SIM cards for my old Motorola, but don't know if this works for a smartphone.  Is it "legal" to swap SIMs?  Will I lose data or settings?  Experienced travelers please advise.

Its perfectly legal to swap sim cards. The main issue is wether your iPhone is locked to a carrier or not. A carrier locked phone will not recognize sim cards from a different carrier. Only carrier unlocked phones can do this.
So the first thing to determine is if your phone is carrier unlocked.  since you mention it is an ATT phone I'm going to guess its not unlocked.
You will need to talk to ATT and explain the situation and have them unlock the phone as only the carrier can do it. They may or may not agree to do this.
Also, an  iPhone 5 uses a very special type of sim card, a Nano sim card, which is smaller than all other sim cards, so when looking for one make sure its of the correct size.

  • What steps do I need to take once Verizon unlocks my sim card for international use on another carrier

Hi, I am traveling to Romania in a few days. I called Verizon Global Support and had them unlocked my sim card for the 4s.
They told me there was some steps I had to take after they unlocked it and I will find these steps on the Apple website.
Well I cant find what they are talking about and my search on the internet is not giving what I want.
I see things about Sprint 4s and that u must connect your phone to Itunes to complete the unlock process is this the same for verizon ?
The Verizon Rep told me I will be able to use a Internation Sim but I had to connect my phone to a computer after replacing the International sim and go threw a whole process of Restoring and resetting my phone threw Itunes. Is there true ?  I dont not have a internation sim with me is there any other way to see if its unlock and how the process is ? Do i need to set my phone to only run on GSM when I get there or will the International sim automatically switch the band ?
I know its alot of question all at once but i just want to get to the point.
Thanks any help will be appericated

This is the only thing I could find but it does not answer my question or even what I was told by the Global Support Rep.
Verizon has confirmed (here and here) they WILL unlock the SIM on the iPhone 4S, allowing for use of local SIM cards while traveling abroad (no word yet on whether this will allow for use on AT&T and T-Mobile.) This is different than the jailbreak unlocking method; SIM unlocking through Verizon is permanent and will not affect your warranty in any way.
    1. Meet the following requirements:
    * Must be a Verizon Wireless customer.
    * The iPhone 4S being unlocked must be active on a Verizon Wireless line of service.
    * The line of service must be active at least 60 days.
    * The line of service must be in good standing for the past 60 days.
    * Only one SIM Unlock per line every 10 months.
If you don't meet one or more of the above requirements, call anyway. You may still get lucky.
    2. Insert a foreign SIM into the SIM card slot on the side of your phone (only required to confirm that the unlock is successful.)
    3. Call 1-800-711-8300 (Verizon Global Support) and ask the representative for a SIM unlock. Occassionally a representative may not know exactly what you are referring to; make sure you are not transferred to a different department. You are in the right place. Explain that they should have a walkthrough on how to do this, and that it allows for the use of local, non-Verizon SIM cards while traveling abroad.
    4. Get confirmation from the rep that the unlock has been applied to your account, then check your phone to make sure it recognizes your SIM and can connect (if successful it will roam on AT&T, assuming you are calling from the USA.) You will NOT see an unlock confirmation in iTunes as that is for a factory-applied unlock only.
    5. Enjoy your new unlocked iPhone 4S!

  • How do I use my AT&T SIM card for the unlocked Verizon iPhone 5s?

So I am planning on getting an unlocked verizon iPhone 5s but the thing is my carrier is AT&T. So how do I use my AT&T SIM card for the unlocked Verizon iPhone 5s?

If you plan on using AT&T, why on earth would you purchase a Verizon iPhone? Doesn't make any sense. Yea, it will work on AT&T's network, but you won't get LTE, only 3G. LTE requires using a Verizon sim.
This is an extremely poor idea. Purchaase an officially unlocked iPhone, from Apple, if you want to use AT&T's network.

  • How do I activate a used iPhone 3 with no SIM card for use as an ipod touch?

How do I activate a used iPhone 3G with no SIM card for use like an iPod Touch? It was apparently on AT&T previously and I have another iPhone 3 that is active on AT&T if that is helpful. Thanks!

    Copied from the link provided.
Follow these steps to use your iPhone without a wireless service plan:
Insert the SIM card from your new, activated iPhone or one that was previously used to activate the original iPhone.
Connect the iPhone to iTunes on a computer connected to the Internet.
Once iTunes activates the device, you're free to use the iPhone as if it were an iPod touch.

  • I want to buy an unlocked iPhone 5c in USA, find a no contract SIM card for USA, and also be able to use it on trips to UK, possibly changing the sim card there. What model should I get and is this possible?

I cannot use T-Mobile, no reception in my house.

    Hey samfromshrewsbury,
Thanks for the question. The following purchase page may have the information you are looking for:
iPhone 5c - Buy iPhone 5c in white, pink, yellow, blue, or green - Apple Store (U.S.)
    http://store.apple.com/us/buy-iphone/iphone5c
If you buy a SIM-free iPhone, you will need to purchase a GSM-compatible nano-SIM card separately. In the United States, you can purchase such a SIM from AT&T or T-Mobile. When you travel internationally, you can use a nano-SIM card for iPhone 5c from a local GSM carrier. The unlocked iPhone 5c model is A1532 (GSM).
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

You didn't buy an 'unlocked' iPhone 3GS - you bought a 'hacked' one.
Updating to iOS 5 removed the hack and the unofficial unlock.
All you can do is try to find out which network the phone is locked to and ask them if they can unlock it properly.
Otherwise, sell it or throw it away and buy an officially unlocked phone from an official source.

I'm traveling to Europe (France and Lithuania) with my iPhone 5s.  I would like to buy a local SIM card for use while in each country. Some sources (Verizon phone support) say this is as easy as buying the card and inserting in place in the slot. Others (Apple Genius) say I must completely restore the iPhone if I replace the sim card. Still others say I cannot use a local sim card. Can you help me find the correct information? Thanks for your help.

That's a wonderful question, ssmiley67. The iPhone 5s comes unlock for international use. Many of our LTE devices are unlocked for international purposes and work upon inserting the international SIM in the device.
