Use of straight through and cross over cable

hi,
according to icnd1, we need to use crossover cable to connect similar devices, lets say router to router or switch to swicth..
does this really matter? I mean, what if i use straight through cable to connect one switch to another?
thanks

Hmm, I don't know, does it really matter whether the link between devices can be used?  (Laugh)
As the other posters have noted, many (newer) devices now support auto MDI/MDIX, but some don't.  (Also, on devices that do, auto negotiation might be required to be enabled.)  Some older devices sometimes have "special" uplink ports or manual method to switch the port's MDI/MDIX setting, and for those, too, you can use a strait through cable.
If none of the above, however, you'll need a cross over cable for "similar" device types, i.e. those whose tx/rx pins, on the port, are the same.
You need a cross over cable if both sides are MDI or MDIX (i.e. the same), straight cable if both sides are different.

  • Rollover cable and cross over cable

If I have OOB coonection from a terminal server to a router's console port, do I need to use rollover cable? how about if there's a patch panel betwn terminal server and the router, what cable should I use?

Start simple: if it was a term server and a router (via console), the octal serial cable goes directly into the console port of 2500, 2600 ... anything with an RJ45-style port..
If the console is something like a 6500 or 7500, then you'd need an adapter to a db25 connector.
If you were going directly from a PC (db9f)to an RJ45-style console, it's via a "rolled" cable (reverse the pin order, 1-8, 2-7,3-6, etc) which is most often a powder blue flat cable.
Now, if you need to extend those connections, anything that ultimately results in a "straight through" extension should work, if it's not too long.
So, whatever cable you'd normally use, with whatever "straight-through" assemblies you use to create an extension.
    Good Luck

  • Two ACS4.0 box using win- can connect with cross over cable

    Hi
we have 2 ACS4.0 box, internal replication is happening between ACS1(prim) to ACS2(sec) but not ACS2 to ACS1 why?
Also I need 1 suggesion, whether we can connect 2 ACS boxes through cross cable for sync.
At present it is connected with 2 diff cores(ACS1 to core 1 & ACS2 to core2) and cores are interconnected.
    What is the normal practice.
    Regards
    Naga

    Hi Naga,
The purpose of Replication in ACS is for the Primary Server to overwrite the secondary server's settings that you have chosen.
This is by design Replication is meant to be one way and not bi-directional.
The Cisco Secure ACS Solution Engine supports the operation of only one Ethernet connector at a time. Concurrent operation of both Ethernet connectors is not supported."
To get redundancy with any ACS - you need replication setup with TWO ACS, it is not
possible to setup a NIC failover in the same chasis.

  • Mac pro - powerbook g4 - networking with cross-over cable

I connect my powerbook to the Mac pro with a cross-over cable.
Personal file sharing is on both computers (both Mac osx 10.4.8)
    Question 1:
While most of the time I can make the connection work I still don't understand the logic behind it.
Sometimes I connect and the connection works immediately, on other occasion I have to restart one of the macs or both to make it work.
Is there another solution then restarting?
Please enlight me on the subject.
    Question 2:
My Macpro is connected to the internet (to a ethernet-router up the line, I can not pull another cable from the router because all the ports are busy).
My powerbook is connected to the Macpro with the cross-over cable.
Can I access the internet on my powerbook through the cross-over cable. I already tried the Internet Sharing on/off thing but I couldn't make it work.
Thank you all for sharing your knowledge on the subject.

    Hello Eugene,
Just a quick note to let you know you and others know that you do not need a cross-over Ethernet cable to connect your Mac Pro to another device. The idea of using a cross-over cable is a hold over from bygone days of Ethernet ports and products that either were before the auto-mdix or just did not implement them to save cost. Auto mdix Ethernet ports (which the Mac Pro, and every current Mac computer has) are able to detect the type of cabling/connection, and auto configure the Ethernet port for the proper connection. This mean you can use a regular Ethernet patch cable and not be concerned if it is a straight thru or cross-over style.
As for sharing your internet connection using your Mac Pro, yes, it can be done, and the capability is included with OS X. You can find step by step instructions by accessing the Help menu in the finder and entering "sharing Internet" (without the quotes).
However, I would suggest you just buy an inexpensive Ethernet Switch, to use to expand the number of ports available from your router, and then run a line to your other computer.

  • Apple TV to PC. Cross-over cable or Ethernet?

My apple TV will plug directly into the pc with iTunes. Do I need a Cross-over cable or an Ethernet Cable? And What is the difference? Also How would I do this? Thanks in advance!

I got it in April this year... If I have no internet where I am using it, how do I authenticate it to play? Here I have no internet BUT I have no HDTV here... My house has no Internet but it does have an HDTV! Do I need an HDTV to connect it to iTunes to authenticate it? Or can I use my existing Dial-Up connection to do it.. By using my dial-up connection I mean like Connect it to my laptop, and then connecting my laptop to my dial up connection and opening iTunes and do it like that... Would that work?

Do I need a cross over cable to connect my cable router to my Time Capsule via the WAN port on each unit ?

    No.
Use a regular CAT5e or CAT6 Ethernet cable.

  • I can't get my shuffle to play through all my playlists. Once I pick a playlist, it will play that one all  the way through and start over instead of playing the next one.

How do I get my shuffle to play all my playlists through their entirety?  I will select one and it will play all the way through and start over.  I want it to finish that one and move to the next playlist, and so on.

I think that's the way it's supposed to work.
You should just create another "merged" playlist that has ALL the songs from those playlists, with songs in the order you want them played, then use the play in order setting on the shuffle.
It won't take up any more space on the shuffle, because all of the songs will already be on the shuffle due to the separate playlists.

  • IS-R: Picking in Flow Through and Cross Docking

    In Merchandise Distribution (conceptually),
    - for recipient-driven flow through, picking is done before GI.
    - for cross-docking, no picking.
Which configuration controls the picking has to be done in flow-through and not to be done in cross-docking?

    Hi,
Path - IMG - Logistics General - Merchandise Distribution -- Plant Profiles for Merchandise Distribution
If you indicate not relevant for picking
    or
    Delivery Item category - OVLP
Same indicator is available at delivery item category

  • Noughts and crosses over TCP

    Hi,
I am doing project for uni of noughts and crosses game over TCP. This is my second project in Labview, I am autodidact. I know that in my program are a lot of this to make them better or to replace with more optimal sulutions (even notifiers), but I am on finish of the game, the next one will be better!
So the problem is in file client.vi, probably it is not complicated. Function Search and Replace String does not replace me anything. If You have some time (I suppose that not much than 10 min) check it please. Code is commented.
The file client.vi shoud only indicate the situation on the board.
Great thanks! I wish I could do something to repay You.

  • VIA connection and Cross over connection using AWR MWO

    Sir,
I want to connect the top conductor to bottom conductor through VIA in AWR MICROWAVE OFFICE. I am able to generate the top and bottom condutor , but am not able to connect VIA from top to bottom conductor and also how we have to observe via ,top and bottom  conductors using 3D view. I have shown the below figure name CROSS_OVER_VIA_HOLE, have to generate like this. I have shown also my generated top and bottom conductor EM structure and also 3D view

Most people just attach the .emp file to their message.  Were you not able to do that?  Please try again.
If you are new to EM simulation in the AWR design environment, please read our documentation on the EM Editor and watch this video.
    1. Assuming this is a 2-sided board, when you define the dielectric layers, set them up as
         Air
        Dielectric
        Air
If you are using AXIEM and thick metal, add a second air layer to the bottom, and make the one just below the dielectric as thick as the conductor on the bottom side of the board. Conductors sit on TOP of the specified dielectric layer, and protrude into the dielectric layer above.
    2. Just draw a circle using via material.  Vias start from the top of the specified dielectric layer, and extend downward through as many dielectric layers as specified by "Extent".
    3. In layout, you can overlap two shapes drawn on the same layer, and execute an exclusive OR (XOR) or Subtract command.

  • Can you use the HDMI Out and the Optical Cable out at the sametime?

I would like to connect the HDMI out cable from Apple TV to connect to the HDMI digital video/audio connection to my stereo and connect the optical out on the Apple TV and connect to my Zone 2 on the same reviever.
Can I use both these Apple TV outputs at the same time or can you only use one at a time?

Yes, lots of conflicting reports, sometimes things can change from one AppleTv firmware to another.
I had assumed PJJW12 was planning on viewing and also outputting audio to Zone 2.
I assume the AppleTv would be hooked to the Av amp - might be worth seing if the current HDMI audio could be routed to Zone 2 to avoid need for an adapter.    However the AppleTV is connected if there is a TV involved and audio processing gets passed through it may also be possible to take analogue out from a TV and perhaps route that to Zone 2.

    Hi Camacho,
Acrobat will not save the spreadsheet as PDF unless you click on the option to do so.
Do you face the issues with all the spreadsheets?
