Use of Synchronized  in jsp/servlet

Can any one explain me the use of Synchronized in servlet/jsp which is multithreaded Is this correct synchronized should be used only when we want to pritect Static variable as they have only one copy but in case of instance variable they have seperate copy for each instance so no point of synchronized.
Thanks in advance

Hello again,
Take an external file for instance, you open a input stream to it and read data from it in your Java application. You can't have two threads reading at the same time, and one will likely block or throw an exception.
A better example is when your threads need to communicate with each other. If they all communicate via a set of variables that can be read and written to by any of them, then they should be synchronized. You should know if your threads need to communicate with each other? If they do not, there is no need for synchronisation.
What are your threads doing if you don't mind me asking?
I have to admit, I have had little experience using threads, and I have never needed to use threads in JSP (I don ot directly use servlets).

Darren

  • How to use connection pool in jsp/servlet ?

    I found I can "lookup" it in either java beans/servlets/JSP using JNDI. why?
    what is the best practice to use it in a jsp/servlet web app considering JNDI lookuping expensive?
    Thanks!

    Huh?
    You can lookup a JNDI resource from anywhere in java code you want to. As long as you have a repository set up to search on :-)
    Of course whether that resource is available or not is a different matter. If you let the server set up the JNDI resource for you, then you can't run it standalone outside the server without something else setting the same thing up :-)
    So its not so much a limitation of beans, but just the environment you run the code in.
    Best practice? Don't write sql queries in JSP pages :-)
    For the rest you might consider the DAO pattern. Or ignore SQL altogether and let hibernate do the work there for you.

    Java will not allow us to reload any class that is dependent on a native
              library. I suggest that any classes that depend on native code should be
              put in the system classpath. If you change these classes or the native
              library you will need to restart your server.

  • Enable paging in tabular data in JSP/Servlet

    i have a JSP page which will show the list of records from the database.
    and i can do a buld delete of these records.
    what i have done is this jsp page calls a servlet once i check some values and press the delete button. this servlet will delete the selected rows and sow the values deleted.
    now when i come back to my jsp page and refresh it, i can see that values being removed from the list.
    now i want to do the following things
    1) Automatically refresh my jsp page when i click the delete button and don't want to be redirected to a page.
    2) i want to enable paging. hope those who have worked with asp.net grid view understand this.
    thx

    If you are familiar with ASP.NET you should probably consider using Netbeans 5.5 with the visual web pack plugin.
    http://www.netbeans.org/products/visualweb
    It's currently a preview, but should be released "soon"
    It features drag and drop web app development and a paged control like the one you are looking for. Much simpler than using the manual old jsp/servlet route.
    The latest Oracle JDeveloper also support visual web app development with these types of components.

  • Synchronized problem in JSP/Servlet, please help me.

    Hi, all
    I have many processes in one JSP page or Servlet program of my project.
    When many people visit at one time, then the project throws some SQL/DB Errors.
    I have updated it and test it many times, I think, that is a synchronized problem.
    At last I used synchronized (this){my JSP/Servlt SQL/DB processes} to synchronize
    The process. Then the errors removed.
    And now I think that too danger to use the synchronized (this){} to synchronized.
    If use it then some other problem may be growling on. Such as when one people need to use
    This service others must to wait, the process may be too slow! And when an exception throws
    from the SQL/DB or some other place, what I do? Need any advice from you.
    Sincerely
    Urey
    *** my JSP/Servlt Server is tomcat ***

    As Chuck points out, there isn't a new instance of the Servlet/JSP for each request - they are probably all calling the same instance so any state will be shared. If your Connection is stored as a member variable then you'll have problems with it already being in use if two people hit the page at the same time.
    Limited resources such as database connections should ideally be pooled anyway to ensure that you're not opening them all the time and that you can control how many are open across the entire application. Then you'd simply need to get a fresh connection out of the pool at the top of the page and make sure you put it back when you're done.
    Incidentally, although it might work, synchronizing the database access in the JSP would be a bad idea since you'd just create a queue of requests waiting to use the one Connection whereas you really need a number of Connections to deal with everyone simultaneously.
    If you need some example code for a simple JSP using a database connection pool (DataSource) just say.
    Hope this helps.

    hello,
    there are multiple documents out there, describing the oracle reports server setup. try doc.oracle.com for documentation.
    also it is part of the online-documentation.
    you need to install 9iAS enterprise edition. the server is pre-configured and will listen to the url http://yourserver/dev60cgi/rwcgi60.exe
    passing only this url you will get a help-screen, describing the syntax.
    regards,
    the oracle reports team

    You need to use the Oracle jdbc driver. Apparently, the Weblogic JDBC driver is being selected:
    weblogic.jdbc.rmi.SerialPreparedStatement
    The Oracle JDBC classes can be found in <ORACLE_HOME>/jdbc/lib/See <ORACLE_HOME>/jdbc/readme.txt for how to specify the correct class path in the application.
    I would have thought that the oracle JDBC driver would have been selected (if in the classpath) or an exception would be raised if the Oracle JDBC driver was not found.... because the code should include:
    DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
    This should load the Oracle jdbc driver and classes, not the weblogic ones. IF the Oracle JDBC drivers are not found, an exception should be raised...

After adding it, you can access both request parameters and the uploaded files easily. It's more transparent than Apache Commons File Upload. There is sufficient documentation to get you started, and there is a forum if you have any questions.
    Jenkov HTTP Multipart File Upload is available under the Apache license, meaning its free to use.

  • Using a single connection for jsp, servlets and classes

    Hi! I'm building a web site that uses JSP, Servlets and some classes. I use database access in all my pages. I want to open a connection and use it for all the pages while the user is in my site, so I don't need to open a connection with every new jsp or servlet page. My software must be capable of connection with various databases, like SQLServer, Oracle, Informix, etc... so the solution must not be database (or OS or web server) dependant.
    Can you help me with this? Some ideas, links, tips? I'll REALLY appreciate your help.

  • Using jFreeCharts with JSP-Servlet Web App

    Can someone please help me to get started on using the jFreeCharts in mt JSP Servlet we app? So far I have this in my servlet but I do not know what to do from here.
    protected void doPost(HttpServletRequest arg0, HttpServletResponse arg1) throws ServletException, IOException {
    //          create a dataset...
              double[][] data = new double[][] {
              { 1.0, 4.0, 3.0, 5.0, 5.0, 7.0, 7.0, 8.0 },
              { 5.0, 7.0, 6.0, 8.0, 4.0, 4.0, 2.0, 1.0 },
              { 4.0, 3.0, 2.0, 3.0, 6.0, 3.0, 4.0, 3.0 }
              //DefaultCategoryDataset dataset = new DefaultCategoryDataset(data);
              //return DatasetUtilities.createCategoryDataset("Series ", "Factor ", data);
              CategoryDataset dataset = DatasetUtilities.createCategoryDataset("Series ", "Factor ", data);
              JFreeChart chart = ChartFactory.createBarChart(
         "Bar Chart Demo 2", // chart title
         "Category", // domain axis label
         "Score (%)", // range axis label
         dataset, // data
         PlotOrientation.HORIZONTAL, // orientation
         true, // include legend
         true,
         false
         }

    the JFreeChart documentation has examples doing just that.
    And if you don't know how to get a browser to call some resource from some html you should get a beginner's tutorial to html.
