Use of video effects

I wonder if there's a novice out there like me who has tried to edit effects for an old VHS and found some short cuts?  eg. I have an video that's only about 20 years old but because it was taken inside at night it's quite dark and grainy, not to mention the movement from the amateur photographer?
Instead of playing around with controls like brightness, saturation etc which seems endless, are there any quick tips out there?
thanks,

As Bill points out, video from a old VHS source would be difficult to enhance as it would kick the grains high and the output might start looking more shabby.
What I would do here is that - (after enhancing the clip to whatever extent you can) Import these clips in a bigger project setting and then Scale these clips down and place them in the center to create a picture in picture kind of effect. With the backgroud being the same clip scaled up to fit the entire screen, but may be with Black and white effect applied and with a good amount of blur applied, so that the background movie does not disturb the foregroud clip.
This trick helps solve a couple of things if nicely done.
1) The old VHS footages are usually of smaller dimension and nowadays the playback monitors are usually HD ones - Creating a Picture in Picture (Video in Video) effect helps showing up the VHS footage in a smaller window and it atleast gives a feel that the video quality has improved a bit.
2) Having the same clip, blurred and with some effects, gives a feel that the entire screen is filled with relevant content.
Do try with a small portion of your footage and check if this helps.

  • Select LUT using Lumetri video effect

A question regarding applying the Lumetri effect in PP CC 2014. I drag the Lumetri effect (NOT one of the Lumetri looks) onto my clip. In the Effects Control panel I click on the little button that allows me to adjust the effect and a standard mac "open" dialog box opens to select he LUT. However, since all the LUT files (the .ixt and .cube files) reside within the Premiere application, they cannot be opened via this dialog box. To even see them in the finder one must ctrl-click on the PP application icon and select "view package contents" to be able to navigate to the folder with the LUT files. This cannot be done from within the Lumetri dialogue box when applying the effect.
My solution was to duplicate the finder folder with the effects and move it higher up in the directory to reside at the highest level of the Premiere application folder. Then I can access the LUTs from within Premiere.
    Two questions:
One, is this solution going to cause problems?
Two, what am I doing wrong to need this workaround in the first place?
I hope my explanation is clear.
Obviously, this is on a Mac. Using Mavericks. 2013 iMac.

I guess you mean the Scratch Removal. It works with me...
The error message should occur only if the script code has some bad syntax error... but the plugin code is quite straightforward, and it doesn't show any error of that kind. So may be your plugin file got corrupted.
I suggest you to download the filter again and try once more.

  • FCE Video Effect Error - "FXScript Error: Expected a Number"

I am trying to use a Video Effect on FCE4 and I am getting a error: "FXScript Error: Expected a Number." I am using the effect TMTS Paint - Speck Removal and when I select Render this error pops up. I have entered the cordinates for where the effect is to take place but this error keeps coming up with this effect. Is there a problem with the effect, should I try to load another Speck Removal Effect? Thanks

  • What are the video effects used in this video

I was just wondering if anybody could help me. I was intrigued to find out what kind of video effect is used in this video at 0:16 - 0:18 and if theres a name for this type of video and editing used throughout the video such as the continous stream of different videos etc.

Do you mean the distorted lips or the bad tv reception.
The distorted lips can be anything from Bulge to Mesh Warp to Liquefy.
The bad TV reception can be started with the Bad TV Effects Presets that comes with AE. You can modify or edit these as you like.
I know of no specific style name that goes along with any part of this video other than lazy. It looks like nobody had an idea of what they wanted to do so they just shot a bunch of stuff and threw every effect they had in their bag of tricks at the project. Turn off the sound and it's impossible to tell what it is about. I don't mean to be critical but there's not much original here that I haven't seen a zillion times going back to the Video Toaster days. (probably before you were born). It's nothing more than a bunch of quick cuts and jitter.
Load up about 100 layers, trim them do different lengths from 5 to 30 frames, Select half of them, apply Bad TV1 to that bunch, Apply Bad TV2 to the another 10 random layers. Add tint, bulge, to a few more. set a couple of position and rotate keyframes to a few more then add wiggle to those, then use the Keyframe Assistant to sequence the layers and you'll be pretty close. It should take you about 15 minutes.
If you've got a specific question about how they made this jitter or how they made time stutter ask away. If used to tell a story these techniques are all useful. If you just want to create a jarring montage then follow my suggestion in the previous paragraph then run Brainstorm a couple of times.

  • How to use Quartz Composer as a video effect?

    Hello everybody,
I recorded a movie with my iSight camera. And now I want to apply a Quartz Composer effect that I created. I put the Quicktime Movie in the same folder as the .qtc file and imported it via the "Movie Loader". Thats works fine in the Quartz Composer Preview window.
But everytime I exported it from Quartz Composer as a Quicktime movie, the place where the movie is, is just white. No movie.
I tried to open the .qtz file in Quicktime, but I got the same result.
What settings do I have to make, to make sure my movie is exported to Quicktime?
I'm quite new to Quartz Composer, but I hope somebody can help me.
    Thank you very much,
    Jan

You'll want to use Core Video which is technically part of QC and yes I do believe you can apply QC filters to video clips using Core Video.
Apple's Guide to Core Video is here: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/GraphicsImaging/Conceptual/CoreVideo/CV ProgIntro/chapter_1_section1.html
There are also Core Video examples in the Developer Example code folder in the Quartz folder.
    Hope that helps,

  • Using video effects in quicktime pro

how can i access the video effects in quicktime pro every time i try and use the filters i cant apply them to the movie can any one help ie fade dissolve etc any threaaaaaaad would help can not find anything in the manuals have been looking for hours ??????????????

    Only looking for hours?
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/RedneckTexasXmas/index.html
A "movie" made from still images and some sound tracks. All made using QuickTime Pro.
The "transitions" were made by taking the still images and adding them "scaled" to a ten second audio track. The audio was deleted so then I had about 50 little ten second videos. Two of these videos were merged into one file using:
    http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/samplemakeeffectmovie/index.html
Thousands of combinations can be created.
They were all added over another QT track (map of Texas) and their position and transparency levels and layers were adjusted. Last I copied all of this file and added it "scaled" to my two sound tracks.
The "filters" can be accessed via the Export "Movie to QuickTIme Movie" but they are applied to the entire file at export. If you wish to use more than one filter you should first create separate files from your source project.
The end result (a 4 MB file) would require over 300 MB's if done in an application like iMovie. The transitions add nearly nothing to the total file size when you do them using QuickTIme Pro.

  • I'm creating live video effects using a midi controller

I am creating live video effects using a midi controller on a mcabook. The final destination for the video content is an ipad app which uses the built in iPad camera to capture video. I want to "trick" the ipad into "filming" the video from the macbook with the effects. Does anyone have any ideas - software orhardware solutions are all viable. The ipad accepts audio through an Alesis iODock. I really be looking for a software solution which will over ride the built in camera on the ipad and accept a feed from the Macbook.

You can't override the physical camera and substitute the macbook camera.
You could find an app or write one that would have the macbook stream the video over wifi from the macbook to the iPad.

  • What video effect did they use in this music video?

What video effect did they use in T-Pain's - Best Love Music Video
Here is the music video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wmD3M-BfVo
You can tell there is a certain effect that they applied to it. It could be a camera tracker or a camera smoother. I just plainly don't know at this point. I would like to "try" and recreate it if I could with your help.
    Thanks in advance.

That's simple parralax animation to give the illusion that the camera would be very close to the talent while keeping the background in frame. Nothing magic there, given that all the backgrounds are artificial and have been added in post, anyway.

  • How do I export an animation from Photoshop with no background, to use in after effects?

Its been a few years since I've used photoshop and after effects together so hoping you can remind me how to do this.
I'm trying to export an animation created in photohop, its frame by frame, no background. I've been exporting it as an image sequence, now I"ve coloured it I need to solve this transparency issue.
Is there a way to export it to use in after effects on top of a background layer.
So I just want to see the character, no background, animation on top of my background layer in after effects, does that make sense??
Please don't say I need to have an alpha channel on each frame, that will take ages, there must be another way.
Please help I need to sort this ASAP
    Thanks in advance!
    x

    Thanks!
So this makes sense, I tried it, when I import into after effects (here is the psd.)
I get this window not sure what to be selecting, but I tried different things and it still isn't importanting as literally the animation with no background, have I missed something? whats strange is that when I import the psd, what does import is a strange monatage of snippets of the video I'm making in afterfx, not the completely separate animation i made in photoshop which I'm trying to work into the video.
very perplexing! any more help is much appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Premiere Elements 7: track matte key video effect does not work?

I want to use the track matte key video effect to fade out some cropped video clips. So I did a test:
    first track: video clip
second track: PNG file, black with white circle
third track: video clip with FX with second track (here: Video 5) and luminance
As you can see in the picture the small preview pic above the effects shows the effect like I expected: a circle with the content of the third, lowest, clip. But the large video preview shows the first clip.
    What did I do wrong?
I tested other settings and track orders. No efforts.

Bill, thanks again for your help! Good tutorial. That's what I need in principle! My try was a bit more complicated ...
But I can't help. The white area stays (see screenshot top left corner). Only some of the small blurred area around the shape shines through as I could see playing around without blurring the video clip.
    I used:
title with white (it is 100% white) shape and blur effect above
video clip with track matte effect and matte alpha on the title track, reversed (blur effect on whole clip like in the tutorial)
Rendering and export does not change anything.
    I'm feeling a bit stupid.

Your problem is that the program wants a good video card and a fast hard drive and lots of memory and you have none of the above. If you upgraded the RAM to 8 gigs and installed a solid state hard drive you might make the program useable but the real bottleneck  is going to be the Intel HD graphics, which cannot be upgraded.
You do have an open slot to add one 4 gig memory module. This is an easy relatively inexpensive upgrade. See here:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7FvZ-JduRM
    http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct51264bf160b
I would try this a step at a time. Next would be the solid state drive. That would cost maybe $150. Post back if you need more help.

  • What video effect for color desaturation? (e.g. Hue/Saturation in Photoshop)

    Hi all,
What is the Premiere equivalent of the HUE/SATURATION adjustment layer found i Photoshop ? I am trying to slightly desaturate (about -53%) my movie to give it a more gritty look. I could easily get the look I wanted in Photoshpo by going to NEW ADJUSTMENT LAYER-->HUE/SATURATION.
Is there a similar approach for Premiere? In the Video effects folder somewhere? Thanks!

Use the "Fast Color Corrector and "Saturation".

  • Using your video processing computer for the web

    Hello,
I've heard it from some people I really trust and respect that one should never use your video server for ANY other purpose other than video work.   They say if you use other applications, including being on the Internet, it is guaranteed to mess things up in the long run.
I want to do the right thing.  But I must admit, it is SO handy to be able to encounter a problem in PrPro and just go online here and ask.
What do others do?  Do they adhere to the dedicated video machine point of view?
    Thanks,
    matt dubuque

if you follow the 'expert' advices of having a dedicated video processing computer your workflow will be impacted. At least my workflow includes a lot of research and download from templates, royality free pictures, movies, etc. and I'm using Firefox and IE on a daily basis.
Better to invest in a solid workstation as a foundiation for a real multimedia environment, in my case a i7 930, 24 GB main memory, 5 discs with 9 TB storage, etc. under Windows 7 64 bit and I run the following main suites in parallel and all are connected  to the web without any problems:
    * Adobe Master collection CS5 (mainly Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop and Dreamweaver)
    * Cubase 6 and Wavelab 7 for music production
    * Tons of plugins and support SW both for Adobe (Redgiant, Boris FX, ProDAD, Roxio, Juicer, etc.) and Cubase (Waves SSL, NI Komplete, Yamaha N12 mixer, Lexicon, Soundtoys, SPL,  etc.)
If you follow also the principle to never ever install a SW piece without checking first a trial version (1 by 1 of course...). To be protected in the worst case you should use a product like Norton Ghost for data backup and recovery --> never happened to me in my current environment for emergency perposes, i.e. in the last 6 months.

  • Is it possible to set IN/OUT points for video effects within a single clip in PE4?

    Hello,
In PE4, Is it possible to use keyframes to simply turn certain video effects on/off at different points within a single clip ?
Some effects (i.e. Invert)have a Blend With Original setting which makes this easy to achieve, but others (i.e. Ripple)do not.
I understand how to use keyframes to adjust effect properties at different points within a clip, I just can't find a way to simply 'turn-off' or bypass an effect for a period of time.
    Thanks All, CB

    Chris,
As Steve points out, most Effects are OFF, by default (usually setting their parameters to 0). I just add a Keyframe for that Effect, with those properties, where you want the Effect to be OFF (but check that each Effect that you use starts as OFF, just to be sure). Then, in between the OFF settings, I add Keyframes with the desired parameters to invoke that particular Effect.
One can also use the Razor/Sissors to cut the Clip into segments (just do not move them) to keep the Keyframes in one area of the original Clip. I usually work on the entire Clip, as once the Keyframe is set to OFF for that Effect, no more Keyframes are needed.
Some Effects also have a Bypass setting, that can be Keyframed (in P Pro, and assume in PE). This can be handy to fully turn OFF any Effect. Note: even in P Pro, not all Effects have a Bypass setting.
As usual with PE (and P-Pro and PS), there can be a couple of ways to accomplish the same thing. One can choose the method that suits them best.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
