Use of 'Widescreen' filter problem

I like to use the 'widescreen' filter occasionaly on certain sequences i.e. it puts a black bar top and bottom of the screen and gives a cinematic type effect.
When I play the DVD on my new widescreen TV, it plays normally for a few seconds, then the picture aspect ratio changes, and instead of a picture with black bands top and bottom, the picture expands to fills the screen. It's as if the TV has sensed the picture ratio has changed and alters the viewing aspect to compensate. (hard to explain hope you get the picture. I've tried cropping the picture to get the same effect but this doesn't work either. Any ideas?

Adding a letter box filter on a standard def 4:3 sequence or cropping the clip don't make a true widescreen movie.
If you mix a such filtered clips and standard clips,the resulting movie is a standard def 4:3 with black bar on top and bottom on some portion. The DVD player will not "see" a letterbox format and adjust itself to fit the screen, but a 4:3 one.
To get a true widescreen DVD, you have to start a widescreen project in iDVD and import anamorphic movies (standard def 4:3 780X480 with anamorphic pixel that will spread over the 16:9 format). Search this forum with "anamorphic, widescreen, DVD, anamorphizer" keywords.

Problem with importing a Motion project into FCP if it uses a Boris filter

Had an odd and highly frustrating experience. Was using a Boris Continuum filter (the posterizing one) on the background of a Motion project (was using it to age a background of a brick wall to age it and give it a more 'nighttime' look).
When I imported the file into FCP to use as an intro there, the background disappeared entirely. After an hour of troubleshooting, finally figured out that it was the Boris filter that was causing the problem (it also was probably responsible for the random crashing of FCP I was experiencing), as when I disabled the filter and re-saved the project, it worked beautifully.
Is this a 'normal' problem when using Boris filters? Do I have to export every Motion project into a Quicktime file before importing it to FCP (and possibly DVDSP) if it uses a Boris filter?

It's not the RAM (which is either 8GB or 16....not sure on that computer). Got an e-mail from Boris Support that implied that this will happen all the time...that you have to export all projects before you use them in FCP or DVDSP or the Continuum filters won't work (loved how the support person suggested that I just use the filter in FCP...which defeats the purpose of creating something in Motion! But I digress...) Told me I had to buy a $500 program called Automatic Duck to get things to import properly...and that Boris filters won't work with the latest upgrade of FCP, btw.

Problem with widescreen filter

I'm working with Final Cut Pro 5. When attaching the widescreen filter to the footage and I'm ajusting the 4:3 picture in the mask, the picture no longer is as sharp as it was without the filter.
I think this had something to do with the realtime in Final Cut Pro 5, since in FCP HD, when I had to render the widescreen filter, this problem didn't occur. (Kind of the same problem seems to be when I create "Text" and attach a normal dissolve which causes a shuttered image during the fade; I solved this problem by attaching the motion blur filter, so FCP5 was obliged to render - and it worked). However this didn't resolve the widescreen problem...
Has anybody an idea on this topic or experienced the same problem? Could this may be a problem with the software?

Thanks for your answer. I wasn't aware of the percentage based issue. If this is the problem, that means that the offset adjusting with keyframes is quite useless since I always have then offsets that reach for instance from -33 to -44, with offstet numbers like -33, -34, - 35...
Is there any solution to this problem to avoid the softness at all? Like recompressing the whole footage after the filter adjusting? Is there actually no problem with the RT; on FCP HD there was no such problem.
I'monitoring externally and I see the softness also on the canvas and also when the clip was exported etc.

Using my widescreen tv as display

using my widescreen as a display , works well but i can t get the top menu bar or the bottom dock options to fit into the screen. i m guessing this is a format problem with my tv but i can t seem to get anything to work with that either. any suggestions about what i can do in my settings to get these to fit????????? thx

Have you gone into the settings and played around with all the different resolution sizes? I had the same problem but now it fits perfect.
Most of them wont work, it'll just be a blue screen, but you should find one that works.

I uninstalled the software and re installed it again but it didn't fix the problem and its still the same. Help please.

Look at the dock connector on the iPod. Compare with the iPod that does work/connect.
I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1

"Widescreen" filter on Dip to Color Dissolve?

I've applied the widescreen filter to two clips -- then now, I want to put a dip to white color dissolve between the two clips. But when I do it, the actual white isn't widescreen like the two clips and it looks odd.
How can I apply the widescreen filter to the white out part as well?

Seems like there would be an easier way to do it, but here's one suggestion that ought to do the trick:
1 Superimpose a bright green, solid color matte into the timeline onto a track that is directly above the transition.
2 Apply the widescreen filter from the other clips to the new color matte
3 Apply a Color Key from the Key folder in the Video Filters folder
4 Set the color to be keyed using the eyedropper to the same green as the color matte
Now the transition should appear within the bounds of the widescreen.

DSP filter problem in modifying the Oscilloscope

The hardware and software I am using are:
LabVIEW: 5.1.1
DAQ device: PCI-MIO-16XE-50
VI programs: 2 Channel Oscilloscope(sample VI)
I want to modify the function of the sample VI of 2 Channel Oscilloscope to simulate the AC-GND-DC function of Real Oscilloscope.
I try it by using "Butterworth Filter" under
Function-->Signal Processing-->Filters to cut the frequency at 0Hz for "AC" function (cut all DC).
However, the output is not good as real Oscilloscope becasue the signal seen is not good and stable.
I even use order 10 filter to do it. But the result is also the same.
Any suggestions to my problem?

The ac-coupling of an oscilloscope is not a filter a "0" Hz. It is normally just a simple capacitance that, with the 1MOhm input impedance of the oscilloscope, acts like a first order high-pass filter with a cut-off frequency of few hertz.
Try to implement a highpass Butterworth filter of order 1 and with a low cut-off frequency of 10 Hz.
You can then play with the cut-off frequency and see which value works best for you (remember to connect the right value to the sample frequency input of your filter). You can also try to increase the filter order to 2 (some measurement devices have input high-pass filters of order 2 or even 3).

Image Preview grey out when using the Radial Filter

I am trying to use the radial filter on my photo in the Lightroom 5, but my problem is that when I tried to create the eclipse with my mouse drag on my photo, the photo immediate disapper and grey out, once then, I cannot do anything with my photo
Even I tried to change other parameter for example changing the color temperature....etc., the photo is still disappearing and grey out, nothing showin in the photo display area.
The program is not hanged, it's just that the photo not displaying, I have to click the Library module and then click again the Develop module, then the photo appears again.
Is there anyone encountering this issue and share with me any solution ?
( I wonder if it's because my laptop below the Lightroom required spec, my laptop is Intel i5 2.4G with 4G RAM)

My sincere thanks to those trying to help me. I've found the problem and feel extraordinarily stupid. In looking at screenshots in a tutorial, I realized the box that pops up for the controls for the graduated filter was collapsed on my screen. Once I clicked the arrow and got the proper controls, it works like it should. It's been a while since I felt this dumb!! But I guess that's why they call it the Beginner's forum, eh?

To Mickey: I got the 2 RAR files into one directory, extracted the part1.rar file, and in that new folder there is a file called start.html. I opened this, and followed the links on the right, from "Welcome" to "Getting Started". After all this I had the SAP Management Console, as well as the Database Manager applications created. You will find the specific instructions for setting up the MaxDB under the "Getting Started" link. After setting up the Database Manager you have to start it up with a user-id and password which was created during the set-up, and specifically link the database to the NSP system. I seem to remember that this didn't work at first, because the Database Manager shortcut does not run the program as an administrator. So run it as an administrator! I altered the shortcut's properties under the shortcut/advanced so it will always run the program as an administrator, and haven't had any problems - once you have done the "Add" procedure you may never need to re-visit the database manager.

Displace filter problem in cs3

I am trying to use the displace filter, with a texture/displacement map that I made. I have it saved as a .psd file, and it won't work. I can use the ones that came with the program, but not ones I make. I sent my texture to a friend with cs2 (as a jpeg file), and they saved it as a .psd file for me, and it works. So I'm wondering why I can't make my own, save them and have them work for me? I can't always expect my friend to help me out!
I also heard another lady, in the same digital scrapbooking forum I am in, say she has that very same problem, so is this a cs3 bug? Is there a fix? Is there any way I can work around this, to be able to make my own, and use them? Any help you can give me would be appreciated!!

I figured out what was going on, with the help of a lady on the scrapbooking forum. I had the file to far down in My Documents, I guess it doesn't want to use it if it's not higher up in My Documents, so I put it in my recieved files, and it worked. Which means I will have to make a folder in My Documents just for those files, and not bury them down in several other folders. What a pain!! :(

You can drag the attachment collumn from settings and sort on that collumn

File damaged after using a smart filter

we got a serious problem with PS12.0.2 , OS 10.6.6 on Mac Pro 2,4GHz Quad Core 24GB RAM.
As you can see the File is corrupted after using a smart filter.The undo function has no success.
Is this a known problem? Maybe with memory or graphic card?

I am afraid bad RAM may be a possilbility.
Does turning off openGL have any bearing on the issue?
Other than that, boilerplate-text:
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by pressing command-alt-shift on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.

Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)
If 3rd party plug-ins are installed try disabling them to verify if one of those may be responsible for the problem.

Alv grid filter problem

Hi all,
I have a problem when filtering data in alv (I use REUSE_ALV_GRID_DISPLAY FM). The problem is that data is truncated in the matchcode of the filter.
I've seen several threads talking about this, but was not able to find the right solution for me... a lot of notes, and I think I shouldn't have to install all of them.. should I?
