Use older Mac or newer widows

i am considering buying an iPod nano. I have an older iBook running at 500 mGh, and I also have new PC running windows 2000xp at 1.8 Gh. Which computer would be the best to use to upload to the iPod?

I personally HATE using iPods with Windows. I think it's a unfriendly experience; slow, iTunes runs pretty bad... etc. I would use the iBook

  • Using older servos with new controller

My group has a three-axis stage controlled by an old Galil DMC-230
motion control board, Galil ESA-10-75 amplifilers and three dc servo
motors (from Galil too, I think).  The board is mounted in an
ancient computer running DOS.  To make matters worse, the hard
drive seems about to give out.  We would like to leave the stage
and motors alone but replace the controller and amplifiers.  We
are considering using an NI PCI-7344 controller with an NI MID-7604
    Motor Drive.
    My questions are:
What are the main things to consider when matching a servo motor to a controller?
Has anyone done anything similar (using older servos, but replacing controller and drive)?
Should I just give up and beg the boss to buy new motors as well?
    Thanks for any advice!
    Telemaque

Been there and almost done that. We have a legacy DOS Galil based (DMC-630 controllers with SSA-12/40 drives) system with brushed servos that is on it's last legs.
Matching servo to drive amps- look at max currents, voltages, and inductances on the motors to see if drive can accomodate. Are they brushed or brushless motors. Also check if encoders and hall signals from existing motors and limits from stages compatible with new controller.
Personally, I would suggest new motors since you may not know their history of (ab)use and depending on their ratings, may be a minor percentage of total retrofit cost. You may also want to have the stages sent out for refurbishment if time permits. They have probably seen a lot of use with little or no cleaning and lubrication. Mechanical wear also takes it's toll. On the system I mentioned above, we were experiencing loss of accuracy and repeatability- the lead screws and nuts were trashed.
Just a couple ideas to start with.
    Good Luck

  • Converting files from older mac to newer pc

We have just replaced our older mac with a new Dell pc. My music files are all sitting in a separate hard drive. If I download itunes to the pc can I just then target the folder/my music from itunes and it will work or does the music need to be reconfigured in some way?

*About 1000 of my songs had their format changed to wma and now when I click on one of them it tells me it can not find file*
iTunes for Windows cannot play WMA files but it can convert them. You need to locate the file or files in their folder and drag it to iTunes.
*Also itunes does not see my daughters nano. Is there a way to tell itunes to liik for an attachment.*
Is the iPod formatted for Windows have you tried Resetting the iPod while it's connected to your PC? That usually works for me when iTunes fails to pick up one of my iPods first time around. Toggle the hold switch off and on a few times then hold down the MENU and SELECT (centre) buttons for five or ten seconds until you see the Apple logo appear then the menu button to go to the normal display: How to reset an iPod

  • Fast internet provider for rural area using older Mac

I have an iBook G4. Mac OSX10.5.8. I live in a rural area where there are no cell towers close by and dsl isn't an option. Which satellite internet provider would be most effective (fastest, most consistent with downloads) for my older Mac? I also have an Acer laptop, much newer. Would answer to question be the same for both laptops?

There are literally dozens of services on the Internet that provide ISP services comparisons. One, for example, is the Internet Provider Directory. I would suggest trying several to see if they concur for your particular area.

  • Transfer files from older mac to new laptop

Is the firewire on my powermac g5 compatible with a thunderbolt port on a new macbook air to transfer files?

Not directly. If you search online for thunderbolt firewire adapter you'll see mention of third party adapters being brought out sometime in the future.  Those won't let you use a Tb device over a Fw port but will let you attach a Fw device to a Tb port.

  • Migration from older mac to new

I have an iMac running 10.6.8. I just purchased a new iMac  with Yosemite installed. I am trying to migrate my files from my old mac. On the new mac I am getting a yellow triangle ! that says my old mac is not running the newest version of OS X , and I need to upgrade to continue to migrate. I just upgraded to 10.6.8 which I was told by the apple "chat" line would take care of this.

Connect the old machine's Time Machine backup or bootable clone backup (via USB) to the new machine. Launch Migration Assistant, select the backup drive and off you go. Extremely simple to do.

  • HT1338 replaced older Mac w/new. Didn't buy Word. Tried to switch to Pages. Can write in pages, but can't

Continued: cannot open docs I've just written in Pages. Note says I must update Pages. So I go to Pages in Apple Apps. I go to download page but it says
it is already installed. Same message appears that Pages can't open doc  until I update.

You haven't told us anything about versions, so I will have to make many assumptions.
I assume you are running Mavericks, since this is the Mavericks forum.  The latest Pages (version 5.1) has an icon that looks like this:
If the Pages you are opening does not have this newer looking icon, then you probably have the old Pages on your dock, and the newer pages in your Application Folder.  Open the newer Pages from the Applications Folder.  You can drag it to your dock and replace the obsolete version there.
The same might be true for Numbers, Keynote,  GarageBand, iMovie, and iPhoto.

Migration Assistant (Finder > Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant) is the tool that you would use to restore backups from older Macs to another Mac.
Details are here:   http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html   The same info applies for Mavericks and Yosemite.   If you are saying that this is a "no go".....where are you getting stuck?  What error messages do you see?

  • Okay I use iPhoto 6 on an older mac and don't want to upgrade past 10.4.11. Can I upgrade iPhoto without the newer operating system? For the life of me I can't get iPhoto to recognize my camera reliably - although it does sometimes. Any advice, help?

The latest version of iPhoto which can operation with OS X 10.4.11 is iPhoto 7 which is part of iLife 08.  You might be able to find a copy of iLIfe 08 on Amazon.com or Ebay.com.
iLife 08's full system requirements are:
Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 processor
iMovie ’08 requires a Mac computer with an Intel processor, a Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0 GHz or faster), or an iMac G5 (1.9 GHz or faster)
iDVD ’08 requires 733MHz or faster processor
512 MB of RAM; 1 GB recommended; high-definition video requires at least 1 GB of RAM
3 GB of available disk space

  • I'm running MAC OS 10.4.11- Using older unsupported Firefox- Have to buy a new Mac to run upgrade of Firefox?

I'm running an older Mac tower-running 10.4.11. Firefox will not support this OS after a while. Don't thing I can install newer Mac OS(10.5) on this machine. There's some talk about installing Linux OS but takes me to confusing Wikipedia page.
So, do I need to spend $$$ and purchase a new Mac computer?

    Hi Markho47,
You might want to look at the [http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/ TenFourFox project]. It is a fork of Firefox that supports older versions of Mac OSX.
    Hopefully this helps!

I am using an Mac PPC version 10.5.8 and I am trying to download the correct version of Flash Player.  I did once but I had to install a "Clean Install" of my computer and when finished I had put back the new Flash Player I just installed well every time I try install the new player it is place in my Trash Folder and I can not get Player to work.  I did everything I was to install it correctly but it still does not install it correctly.  Can some help me.  Bob

Some MacBook Pro versions cannot be upgraded past 10.6.8; others are maxed out at 10.7.5. newer models can go all the way to 10.10. So it is important to know exactly what version you have--there may be close to 40 variants produced since the MB made its debut in 2006.
You can safely give us a snapshot of your model and its current config that will allow us to deternmmine your model and its upgrade potential, plus show it you have any software that may impede any upgrades. Please download and install this free utility:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
It is secure and written by one of our most valued members to allow users to show details of their computer's configuration in Apple Support Communities without revealing any sensitive personal data.
Run the program and click the "Copy report to clipboard" button when it displays the results. Then return here and paste the report into a response to your initial post. It can often show if any harmful files/programs are dragging down your performance.
Remember that, on leaving OS10.6.8, you lose the ability to run older softare written for older PowerPC Macs (yours in Intel-based). Programs such as Office 2004 will no longer work (min of Office 2008 needed to work on newer OS versions), and AppleWorks will stop working completely

  • I've lost the use of Appleworks in 10.9.2. Is it possible to partition the internal hard drive of my MacBook Pro and install an older Mac OS (10.6.8) on the second partition with OS 10.9.2 on the other?

I've lost the use of Appleworks by upgrading to 10.9.2.
Is it possible to partition the internal hard drive of my MacBook Pro and install an older Mac OS (10.6.8) on the second partition with OS 10.9.2 on the other? I'd like to be able to boot to the older OS when I need Appleworks and  few other applications that aren't available on OS 10.9.2.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you for your help.

    Hello again, WZZZ,
Here's an update. I was successful in creating two partitions on my internal drive, and in installing OS 10.6.6 on the second partition, as per your guidence. I now have it up to 10.6.8 with all the security updates and AppleWorks. A great thing.
    Some thoughts:
    • The partitioning had one hitch; it failed at first. But once I "repaired" the disc with Disc Utility the partitioning went thru.
    • The partitioning took a long time in 'resizing the partition.' A few hours I think it was. Lots of progress bar watching.
    • If I had it to do again, I'd size the two partitions differently. My original data was occupying about 230 Gb of the 320 Gb disc. I made the new partitions share the space, about 230 and 75Gb. That left very little available space for the main disc. I ought to have put some breathing room in there. As it is, it's an incentive to clean up all those files, especially all those iTunes files. I now have about 10% of available space there and mean to continue deleting.
So, all in all a good project that got me where I wanted to go. Thank you for your help.
    Appreciatively,
    wallah
