Use OpenCL option is Greyed out

Question

I see that there have been a number of posts about the Graphics Processor option to use OpenCL being greyed out. Here is another one:
PS CS6 & NVidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti with the latest drivers,
siffer_GPU reports: “OpenCL ok version 1.1 CUDA 4.2.1” but OpenCL remains greyed out.
I have no doubt that the problem exists at the Adobe end. Please explain or just admit to the problem and fix it.

What actual PROBLEM are you experiencing that's causing you to look at these options?
OpenCL is ALWAYS unavailable for the 32 bit Photoshop.  That's because it's only implemented for 64 bit builds.  By chance, are you running the 32 bit Photoshop?
OpenCL isn't strictly necessary anyway, as (best I can recall) Photoshop falls back to using shader programs to implement GPU support for the things that it can use OpenCL for.

P.S., if you have BOTH 32 and 64 bit Photoshop installed, then at some point run the 32 bit Photoshop, the [ ] Use OpenCL box will end up unchecked in the 64 bit version, as the two share the same configuration option storage location.  It's a basic design bug in my opinion, and Adobe certainly knows about it.  I assume it's non-trivial to fix.  Perhaps they'll address it in some future version, though instead of fixing it they're no doubt considering just dropping 32 bit support at some point, since Macs don't have 32 bit capability any more at all.
