Use original photos instead of copies

I was wondering if there is any way to set iphoto to use the original photos you import, instead of making copies. Im thinking of something like how in iTunes you can uncheck "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library".
I want to do this so I can organize the photos as I see fit, and rotating the photos in iPhoto will rotate the original photo too. Thanks

I was wondering if there is any way to set iphoto to use the original photos you import, instead of making copies. Im thinking of something like how in iTunes you can uncheck "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library".
You can but it is strongly recommended not to - doing so gives you a referenced library which makes importing more difficult, deleting photos a two step process and makes upgrading or replacing defective hardware much more difficult - and does not accomplish what you want
I want to do this so I can organize the photos as I see fit,
If you were to do this you would have to "organize" your photo prior to importing them into iPhoto - once they are imported to iPhoto the path can not be modified in any way - they can not be moved, renamed, put on a new disk, put on a new computer, - nothing can be changed
and rotating the photos in iPhoto will rotate the original photo too.
Nope - iPhoto does not ever touch any photo outside of iPhoto nor does it ever touch the original photo (inside or outside of iPhoto) - all operations are done within iPhoto and are not reflected on the originals
And your desire to "organize the photos as I see fit" - that is what iPhoto is all about - organizing photos easily and with great power - what you are requesting a organizing files not photos - iPhoto takes care of the files and organizes the photos so you can instantly find what you want
As an example I can instantly show you all photos of my wife in Italy in 2006 - or of my grandson and granddaughter in the same photo on a birthday - or pretty much anything else you can think of asking that involved who, what, when, why or where - and any combination of those - your file "organization" can not even dream of doing that

  • IWeb publish original photo instead of the modified.

I insert a cropped photo which I did using iPhoto into iWeb, in iWeb preview, I can see the photo that I insert, but iWeb publish out the original (uncrop) photo to my website. Any idea?

You are right. The media browser should work, too, but I have found it to be unreliable just as you are discovering. Apparently when you make changes to a photo in iPhoto, the effects are applied nondestructively to the photo. Now depending on how you use the photo, these "effects" may or may not travel along with the photo. This is a shortcoming of iPhoto in its attempts to keep the original photos absolutely pristine.
Here's an additional workaround that you might try if you are dead set on using the media browser. The next time you want to change a photo in iPhoto, first duplicate the photo and then apply the effects on the duplicate. Then in iWeb, when you select the media browser, you should see both images....the original and the cropped/edited. This may lead the media browser to "do the right thing" and bring over the actual photo that you want.

  • Using only Photos instead of iPhoto

After Upgrading to OS X 10.10.3 including the new Photos Mac App I don't need the iPhoto App anymore .
I only want to use the new Photos App from now .
What actions do I need to delete the "Old" iPhoto App without loosing my Pictures ?
( And keep using the new Photos ...)
    Thanks .

You Photos are stored in the iPhoto Library, not in the iPhoto.app.  Deleting the iPhoto, app will not delete the photos in the library. So you could delete it, but it is very difficult to get it back, after it has been deleted, because Apple pulled it from the AppStore.

If you really want only to use Photos, and have migrated the iPhoto Library to Photos, you can delete the iPhoto.appa and the iPhoto Library. That will have no bad impact on Photos.  But wait a bit, before you do that, and make a full backup of your system and archive that backup, before you start deleting.
    The reason:
It is too soon, to abandon iPhoto completely and to uninstall it. You need to test Photos and the migrated library thoroughly - browse all photos and events, albums, title, GPS location, etc, before you can be sure, that the library migrated correctly.
You have to work for a while with photos, to be sure, that it has no bugs on your system.  The release is brand new, and the beta testing has just finished - there are probably still hidden bugs, that will only be visible later and may make it necessary to go back to Photos.
Keeping iPhoto and Photos installed does not need much space, even if it shows a large file size. Your Photos library is just linking to your iPhoto Library, so the photos have not been duplicated. • After editing in photoshop how do I bring the edited photo back into lightroom next to the original photo instead of at the end of all the pictures?

After downloading Lightroom 5.5 my photos come back from Photoshop as the last picture instead of being next to the original.  How do I correct this?

Most likely you need to change the Sort order of your images.  In Library - Grid view there is a tool bar at the bottom of the grid window. If the tool bar isn't visible, hit [ T ] to activate it. Change the sort order to Filename or Capture Time. It is probably set to Added Order.

  • In iPhoto, I want to copy certain photos in an event and then have the copies in another event WITHOUT removing the original photos from their original event; how to do that?

in iPhoto, I want to copy certain photos in an event and then have the copies in another event WITHOUT removing the original photos from their original event; how to do that?

The only way to do that is to export the image to a new file and then re-import it.
It's not really the intended way of working as it uses twice the disk space and is inefficient.
Use Albums instead. A Photo can be in any number of albums and use no extra disk space as it just simply references the image in the Library. Albums can be sorted any way you want - including manaually - and can have image from anywhere in the Library just by drag and drop.

  • How do I find the original photo that is used in one of my contact photo in "Contacts"?

    Hi everyone,
I am in a bit of a dilemma. I desperately need to find and/or access the original photo used as a contacts photo in the OSX built in app "Contacts". I can resize the photo and I can see it in full but I can't find the original anywhere and in any way.
I'd really appreciate some help here, as the photo is dear to my heart but seems to have gone missing. It was originally scanned in but isn't showing up where all my scanned photos are saved. Eek!
If anyone has any pointers on where I could find this photo in its original size, please do share them!
    Ta,
    posies

    Hi DonTimo,
I've tried doing that, but in the said folder there are only default pictures. I can't find the images of any contacts in the app "Contacts" anywhere. The thread you refered me to and many others that are smilar to it, date back to about 2009-2010.
Really need this photo.  Any other pointers?

Error message when compiling book "file is corrupt" referring to a photo.  Or "cannot find original photo".  Can you use photos that have been "edited" out of "Book Mode"?

I did copy it to my desktop, but it still won't let me open it.  I think the file on the disc might be corrupt or something like that though the cd itself checks out fine as far as viruses go.  I was able to verify the disc, but that's about it.  My husband tried it on his iMac and we have the same issue.  It's unzipping the folder, but won't let us open the folder on both the Mac Book Pro or the iMac by double clicking, going to file/open or right clicking.  It just keeps saying the same message as I posted above.  I think I'm just going to have the client put the pictures on either a memory card or a USB memory stick so she won't have to compress the files for zipping purposes.  It's been too frustrating trying to open this folder on this cd she gave me.  She said she created/zipped the cd on her Mac Book Pro but it sure won't open on mine.

  • Been using g iPhone 6 for few months, just backed up my iPhone 5, restored my pics etc onto 6 but all original photos have been deleted?

Been using g iPhone 6 for few months, just backed up my iPhone 5, restored my pics etc onto 6 but all original photos have been deleted, Is there a way I can get them back?

If you are backing up to your computer, check in iTunes/Edit/Preferences/Devices, if there is more than your recent iPhone 6 backup listed. If yes, transfer the photos from your phone to the computer first, then restore from the backup. After that, transfer the recovered photos again to your computer and sync all of the transferred pictures to your phone, using iTunes and the settings in the photo pane.

  • I customize my paper size and print size and am then viewing a photo on my screen. I print it out and it chops off about 5% of all edges of my original photo on the screen. Why does it do that? It is driving me crazy. I use an Epson Photo 2200 printer.

What print and paper sizes are you using?  Are you trying to print a borderless print?  Does your printer support borderless for that particular size?  Are you printing to the custom stock size or to a larger stock size?

Using OSX 10.9.4 and want to have photoshop as my default for photos instead of Preview. Any suggestions?

In the Mac Finder, select the icon of any of your photo files and do a Get Info (Command i) on it. Then select the application you want to open your photo files, then Click on Change All.
You'll need to do this once for an icon of each file type, i.e. one on a JPEG file, one on a TIFF, one for PSD, one for raw files, etc.

how can I delete previously itunes synched photos from my ipad 3 now that I use the cloud instead of synching via mac/itunes?

You will need to connect your iPad to your computer, and on the Photos tab de-select those folders that you no longer want on the iPad - they can't be deleted directly on the iPad. If you no longer want any synced photos on your iPad then you can select and sync just an empty folder.

  • HT201302 The laptop I was using to upload photos from my iphone is no longer good and I want to use my desktop instead but it is displaying an error that the iphone has no photos in it. How do I start using my desktop to upload my photos from my iphone5?

The laptop I was using to upload photos from my iphone is no longer good and I want to use my desktop instead but it is displaying an error that the iphone has no photos in it. How do I start using my desktop to upload my photos from my iphone5, is there any software I need to download?

Photos on the phone in the DCIM folder are those located in the camera roll. Photos that are synced to the phone from the computer cannot be accessed in this manner. They are synced and the only way to manage them is to connect the phone, go to the photos tab and un-select the folders you want to remove or go into the folder photos are located in and remove the photos you no longer want to sync. Then sync the phone and the photos will be removed.

  • Virtual copies and history from the original photo

When I make adjustments to a photo and them make a virtual copy, the history of the adjustments I made does not carry over.  Does anyone know if there is a quick and easy way to create the virtual copy that contains ther detail history of the original photo?  Thanks

    I don't think there's a way - it would be nice though...

  • Horrors: How do I get all my original photo files back out of iPhoto 9.1.2?

In my heart I KNEW I should never have upgraded iPhoto when the update came in for 9.1.2. But I had no idea what it was going to do. Now, to my horror, I have found out.
It has EATEN all the original photo files in my Home/Pictures folder and hidden them inside a single iPhoto database! Yikes.
I discovered this nightmare when I tried to find the original hi-res of a certain photo, and searched my Mac for it by filename – the one assigned to it by my camera.
All the original and modified versions of the file should have appeared in the search box – but no original appeared, sending me into a total panic. I also searched my laptop and back-up drive to no avail. Then I looked in the Home/Pictures folder and there were no photo files there, when there used to be hundreds. Just one single iPhoto Library file.
I felt sick, I thought I had lost all my original photos.
So now I have two problems, and questions:
    1) iPhoto only displays photos from the last 18 months, so how do you access all the photos from years back now?
    2) How can I export ALL my photos back out of the iPhoto database so I can have them where I can see them on my Mac again – as individual files in my Pictures folder like they were before?
    Oh, and one other question:
What can I use instead of iPhoto? Can I revert to an earlier version? Or is there an application that I can import photos to that will leave the original files where they are? Then I can make a back-up of the originals before importing them into iPhoto.
    Thanks,
    Sarah
PS: How do I change my Apple Discussions username?

There's no reason to use the Finder to access your photos. That's what iPhoto is for.  THe following is from a post by Terence Devlin on accessing photos for use outside of iPhoto.  It's the definitive treatise on the subject.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation   which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3.Show File:
    a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    b. On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
