Use parallels or boot amp to run Windows XP?

Should I use boot amp or parallels to run Windows XP??

What computer do you have? What OS? If you have a newer computer or Lion OS you can't use XP in a Boot Camp partition.
No they don't adversely affect "theMac".

  • Installing Parallels when Boot Camp already running Windows

I'm considering installing Parallels on my MacBook Pro, which I already have partitioned with a drive running Windows using Boot Camp. What I need to know is, do I need to eliminate the partition with Boot Camp and if so, will I have to completely reinstall Windows and all my Windows software? I don't want to waste the partition that's dedicated to the virtual drive, rather I'd prefer to have the entire hard drive available to MAC. I really want to have parallels, as it's easier for me to be able to work on Windows and MAC applications at the same time, without having to stop-shut down-restart each time.

Parallels can use your existing Boot Camp partition for the VM, if that's what you're asking. However, if you want to have all one partition (without the Boot Camp one), then yes, you'll have to reinstall Windows when you install Parallels, unless there's some way to "import" your Boot Camp" setup that I don't know about.

It's the other way round: first, you install Parallels, and then you can install Windows 7, 8, Vista, whatever you want. Or Linux. For more information visit the Parallels website.

I updated my iphone 5 to  ios 7 two days ago and I synced with my computer for the first time yesterday. Most of my calendar appointments and events were wiped off my phone but are still on the computer. I use outlook 2010 and a pc running windows 7. Rebooting the phone and the computer failed to remedy the calendar sync problem.

Easy solution for restoring lost calendar informaiton, thank goodness.  On your iPhone, go to settings, then to iCloud.  If your Calendar selection is turned off,  turn it on.  Your info should restore.  If your Calendar selection is turned on, then turn it off.  Choose to save calendars when asked.  After it shuts the Calendar off, turn it back on.  Your info should be restored.
Thank you to Apple support for walking me through this.  Shame on you Apple for not just telling people about this easy fix rather than making us go through all of this pain and worry.

  • Would i be better off using parallels than boot camp

IS it easier to install parallels than boot camp?, Inonly want to be able to use the windows based version of Quicken

For $79 retail (or less) Parallels will give you the convenience of running your PC programs concurrently with your Mac programs.  Bootcamp will require a reboot each time you want to switch environments.
You are aware that Intuit sells Quicken 2007 for Lion, Mt.Lion, Mavericks for $15?

  • Confused about Parallels vs. Partitioning to Run Windows on New iMac

I need to buy a new iMac for work, where currently its a PC environment.  The only thing I really need to continue to run is Quickbooks, which I must use the PC version as we run payroll in house and want to remain compatible with all our global accountants.
While I've used Macs exclusively at home, I've never messed with partitioning.  I was under the impression that I would create a partition and install Windows 7 and a copy of our Quickbooks and then would have to sign in and out between partitions to run Quickbooks...effectively signing in and out of 2 different computer systems (as if I had 2 different computers).
I am confused as to whether I need Parallels (which I have also never worked with).  Is this needed to work in the 2nd PC partition?  or is Parallels something that I can run on my new Mac in the Mac environment and run Windows 7 & Quickbooks without having to log in and out and/or keep rebooting to go back and forth?
    Any insight is appreciated.
    Thanks!

Parallels is a program like any other. You create virtual hard drives on your current hard drive that it uses to store the Windows installation. It is just like creating a disk image on your hard drive. To the computer, it looks and acts like a hard drive, but it is cut out of space on your hard drive. To your Mac, it is just a single file.
Search the internet for "virtualization." Or, look on the Parallels/VM Ware websites for how it all works.
Because the OS sees the Virtual Disk as a single file, if you go into Windows and add a transaction, that whole file changed, not just the single transaction.
Time Machine* "listens" for changes in files. When it detects that a file changed, it backs up the entire file. It doesn't go in and back up the part of the file that changed.
If you could break that virtual disk image into tiny slices, then Time Machine would only see one of the tiny slices change instead of the entire virtual disk. Apple uses that concept in what it calls a Sparse Bundle Disk Image. Database systems use the same method. The "slices" are called stripes. So, to be Time Machine-aware, the developers would have to store large amounts of data in a sparse bundle disk image so that Time Machine only sees when one of the stripes changes and just backs up that stripe.
I don't know whether Parallels or VMWare use Sparse Bundles for their virtual disks. If they do, then you could back them up efficiently with Time Machine. If they don't, it would be better to use something like Carbon Copy Cloner to just back up the Virtual Disk Image periodically (it can be scheduled).
It is a combination of both. To make Time Machine fast, it doesn't look inside each file to determine what has changed. It just looks to see if the file changed, and then it backs up the whole file. Because of that, software engineers need to take advantage of Sparse Bundles if they intend to store large amounts of data the user might want to back up. I don't know what the tradeoffs are in using a Sparse Bundle vs writing straight to disk.
*It is actually a process called fsevents (file system events) that watches and logs every change to the file system. Time Machine uses that database to determine what needs to be backed up.
P.S. You seem fixated on Parallels. There are two other options, VMWare and VirtualBox. For what you need to use Windows for, I would use VirtualBox. It is free and will work just fine. They have done a very good job keeping up with OS X updates and upgrades.
For any of them, you will need a copy of Windows to install on the Virtual Machine.

  • Better to use Parallels or Boot Camp?

    Hey there,
I've been reading where Parallels 6 "has been shown on average to run 40 percent faster than last year's edition, according to people familiar with the matter. Those same people said that the upgrade -- expected to retail for the same $79.99 price as its predecessor -- will also feature Windows boot times that are roughly two times faster than version 3.1 of its primary competitor: VMWare Fusion."
    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/09/08/parallels6_to_run_40_faster_launch_windows_2x_faster_thanfusion.html
I'm curious as to whether it's better to run Windows 7 through Parallels or Boot Camp from a performance issue? If I want to play the new Civ 5 game, will I get better performance through Parallels or Boot Camp?
    Thanks!
    Eric Nanneman

If you want to play a game, you'll need Bootcamp. 3D performance leaves a lot to be desired in both Parallels and VMWare.
On another note, I really expect that Civ 5 will be released for Mac.

  • Want to use touch screen in photoshop. Heard this is supported for new surface 3, is there any way to use it on any touchscreen laptop running windows 8.1?

Hi, I have the lenvo yoga 2 touch. I run windows 8.1, want to use touh facilities in photoshop. Can I do this yet? Heard surface 3 can due to special deal with adobe, will this be availble to all cc users or will there be extra charge etc. Any info appreciated. Sorry for bad english, late nights with little one!

Touch is available for all Windows 8 devices that support direct (on-screen) touch. Note: touch is only enabled of you are using open-gl, so the restriction is that your computer must be able to support open-gl/hardware accelerated drawing. You can download the trial version of Photoshop and try it out.

  • I'm using Parallels 7 on an imac with Windows 7.  Both OSX and Windows (and especially quicken on Windows) runs very slow.  Is there a good way to fix this?

Since installing Parallels 7 and Windows 7 (to use Quicken), my imac and the virtual computer run very slow.  Is there a good fix?

Start up while holding Command R and run Disk Utility, check the SMART status and repair your hard drive.

You can only create iCloud account on an iOS device (iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch) running iOS 5 or higher, or on a Mac running OS X Lion (10.7.5) or higher.  If you don't have one of these you will not be able to create and iCloud account.

  • HT3986 do i lose any functionality running windows 7 in bootcamp?

Hi - I'd love to buy the new macbook pro from a hardware point-of-view. However, I'm a power windows user (develop custom excel sheets and analytic applications) iand would like to hear from users who use boot windows on macs using bootcamp about their experience with windows 7. (I use parallels on mac-mini to run windows/os x simultaneously at work, which works fine, but end up losing a big part of the 8gb memory in this setup).

    Wireless:
Connection problem using windows in a Mac.
    May 4, 2012 10:08 PM (in response to Chris9393)
bluetooth connection is incredibly unreliable/intermittent when in Windows (I run Windows 7 64-bit and Boot Camp 4.0, and got both devices connected without any trouble via Bluetooth).https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4079148
After much testing, I have found the cause of lagging/jumpiness on the Bluetooth Magic Mouse and Magic TrackPad in Boot Camp. Hopefully this will help others:
The drivers for the Broadcom 802.11n Wireless Adapter have a setting called "Bluetooth Collaboration" that is Disabled by default. Enabling this option removes the problem instantly. My Magic Trackpad now works flawlessly, even if I stand 6 metres from the machine. It now works just as well as under Mac OS. The setting can be found under: Control Panel > Device Manager > Network Adapters > Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter (right click and choose "Properties". Under the "Advanced" tab, highlight the setting named "Bluetooth Collaboration", then change it to Enable. Then click OK. I narrowed the problem down to the wireless card by disabling ALL startup services and processes for Windows, then re-enabling one by one. As soon as I enabled the Windows Wireless Service, the problem came back. Similarly, disabling the Wireless Card inside the Network and Sharing Center (or Device Manager) removes the problem. This led me to believe it must be a driver issue with the wireless card, since the problem didn't occur with the Magic TrackPad under Mac OS, or on my mother's Windows 7 64-bit computer. So when I went into the Driver Properties to check for an update, I found this setting about Bluetooth Collaboration.
All Apple notebooks use the Broadcom card (and have done for years), so this driver is installed for almost anybody using Boot Camp on an Apple notebook. I'd assume this problem would affect anybody using Boot Camp + wifi + a Bluetooth device.

  • Macbook Pro running Windows with Boot Camp, wanting to use iMac as second monitor.

I am using a Macbook Pro that is running Windows with Boot Camp. I want to connect it to my iMac so that I can use the iMac as a second monitor.
If it is not possible, I also have a TV that I could use using an HDMI, however when I tried this my Macbook Pro running Windows 8.1 did not detect it in the Display Settings.
What are my options? I just want to use my iMac or TV as a second monitor!!

  • Installing Windows 7 (from a download) using Parallels?

    Hi, first post.
Ok so I've downloaded and installed Parallels to be able to run Windows 7. I then downloaded windows 7 from the Microsoft website. I now have a windows7.exe and two setup.box files on my desktop.
To be able to install Windows 7 using parallel do I need the windows install file to be an image file or is there a way around it?

Where did you download Windows 7 from the MS website? It should be an ISO (disc image). I'm pretty sure you need a disc image (or an actual disc).

  • Running Windows 8 on Parallels, do I need new windows copy to run Bootcamp?

I currently run Windows 8 on Parallels 8, but wanted to run Windows 8 on Bootcamp.... would I need a new copy of windows or is there a way to use the same one?

If you are talking about on the same computer, don't install Windows again. Just start Parallels and tell it to use your already Bootcamp installed Windows as the guest OS. You then can use a single installation of Windows interchangeably from Bootcamp or from Parallels.
If you already have Windows installed in Parallels you can't do what I suggested without removing Windows in Parallels then installing Windows in Boorcamp first.
