Actually I want to know in what ways Photoshop works with FCP. < </div>
FCP will import PSDs in at least two different ways. The choice is project- or needs-based, not function-based.
Are the video editing functions of Photoshop Extended redundant when one has FCP? < </div>
Nope. That's rather like asking since you can review/delete photos on your camera, do you still need Photoshop.
But we're starting to get a feel for where you're coming from, which would have helped tremendously in the first post.

I am upgrading photoshop CS3 to CS6 on Windows 7.
I have downloaded two files: Photoshop 13_LS16.exe and Photoshop_LS167z.
However, it has not installed properly.
I can only open CS6 if I click on the LS167z file with (open with PS).
And although it opens I get the message: Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document.
CS3 is still as it was.

    Many thanks
    That makes everything clear.
    Also thanks for the deletes!

I think so, but only via the Creative Cloud, and with a one year commitment. And that upgrade may be only for suites, not individual apps. I didn't look that closely. See the page here:

EXIFTOOL(1)           User Contributed Perl Documentation          EXIFTOOL(1)
    NAME
exiftool - Read and write meta information in files
    SYNOPSIS
           exiftool [OPTIONS] [-TAG...] [--TAG...] FILE...
           exiftool [OPTIONS] -TAG[+-<]=[VALUE]... FILE...
exiftool [OPTIONS] -tagsFromFile SRCFILE [-SRCTAG[>DSTTAG]...] FILE...
           exiftool [ -ver | -list[w|f|wf|g[NUM]|d|x] ]
For specific examples, see the EXAMPLES sections below.
    DESCRIPTION
A command-line interface to Image::ExifTool, used for reading and writ-
ing meta information in image, audio and video files.  FILE is a source
file name, directory name, or "-" for the standard input.  Information
is read from the source file and output in readable form to the console
(or written to an output text file with the -w option).
To write or copy information, new values are specified with the
-TAG=[VALUE] syntax or the -tagsFromFile or -geotag options.  This
causes FILE to be rewritten, and by default the original file is pre-
served with "_original" appended to the file name.  (Be sure to verify
that the new file is OK before erasing the original.)  Once in write
mode, exiftool will ignore any read-specific options.
Below is a list of file types and meta information formats currently
           supported by ExifTool (r = read, w = write, c = create):

  • Can't unlock background layer using Photoshop CS3 Extended

I installed CS3 a few days ago (though I'm an experienced CS2 and Photoshop 6 user) and opened Photoshop CS3 Extended today for the first time.
The problem I'm having is with unlocking the background layer. I read in the documentation and on the Net about double-clicking and renaming the layer (which is what I did in other versions), or creating a new file with a transparent background, but those things aren't working for me in this version.
I opened a tiff file (a logo I want to use as the basis for a new image) but I can't unlock the background layer so I can copy, manipulate or add to it. Everything on the Layers drop-down menu is grayed out, as are the word Lock: and the symbols following it in the Layers window.
I tried creating a new image but when File|New dialog box opens the option to use transparent in the Background Contents dropdown is grayed out, too.
I'd appreciate some help with this.
    Thanks,
    Peggy

The issue has to do with the mode that you are in.  If it is a TIFF or GIF file that you are opening, when you click on "Image -- Mode" you are likely to see "Indexed Color..." with a checkmark next to it.  Be sure to select "RGB Color."  Once you have done that, you can simply double-click the background layer in the layers palette to unlock the image.

  • Upgrade Photoshop CS3 to CS6

I am trying to upgrade from Photoshop CS3 which has 20 digits for a serial number to CS6 which has 24.  Where do the extra 4 digits come from?

Adobe simply changed the bnumbering scheme. not sure why you think this is of any relevance.

  • Problems using Photoshop CS3 to calculate pixel areas

Is there a known problem with CS3 Photoshop when using it to calculate how many pixels are contained within selected areas when they are complex shapes?  I am trying to do some calculations and for simple areas it is very good but for other areas it comes up with blatantly incorrect values. For example if you create a matrix of tangent circles within a rectangle and start looking at the areas of the circles and the intervening spaces between the circles and or between the circles and the enclosing rectangle surrounding the edges of the outermost circles, and then start to use the "Histogram" window/panel (I'm using Mac version of CS3 Photoshop) the number of pixels is way off sometimes. I've notice that there is sometimes a warning icon in the Histogram panel that says "Click for Histogram with uncached data" and when that is done then beleivable numbers are shown.
So why would the "cached" data be so far off when doing these sorts of calculations??
Thanks for any suggestion on how to accurately compute areas this way.
    -Bob
ps - I tried to post a version of the file but it's over the 2MB limit - if you want to see the exact file I'm playing with let me know and will be happy to send a copy so you can see what I'm talking about.

    Paolo,
What does "representative sample" really mean?
The funny thing is that for some areas (circles for example) the number in the Histogram was very accurate, but complex shapes were horriblly inaccurate (off by about a factor of 4-5). The complex areas involved combinations of other smaller circular areas, so have trouble understanding why these areas would be so far off compared to circles. None of the areas in question were rectangular, but some sides of the regions did have one or two straight edges along with the circular other edges.
Anyway, glad to read that it's a known issue and there is a way around the problem to get at an accurate number.
Thanks for the suggestion - will keep that in mind for next time I do this.
    -Bob

  • Using Photoshop CS3 to open photos stored in iPhoto08

I am having problems accessing photos through PhotoshopCS3 that I have stored in iPhoto. The problem started when I loaded iPhoto08 on my mac. I did not have this problem when I was using previous version of iPhoto.
If anyone could assist with an idiots guide approach it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically.
This is the only way that changes you make using PS will be reflected in iPhoto.

  • Using Photoshop CS3 & After Effects CS3

    Hey All,
I just created an animation in After Effects CS3. I am working from a 2D PSD file with a lot of layers. I am working on a PPC Mac, Quad G5 with 4.5GB RAM. I am running OS X 10.4.11.
When I add the comp to the render queue it cannot render due to the image size of the PSD is too large. When I reduce the image size in Photoshop and then switch back to after effects, the animation is thrown off. I have certain layers that are parented to other layers and it seems that when I change the image size and switch back AE pays no mind to them, and they are scattered all over the place.
    Make sense?
    Can anyone help please?
    Thanks,
    Sean

Thanks Mylenium. The anchor point is centered on my parent layer in this animation and it still throws everything off when I change the image size. So taking your suggestion of creating a null layer:
My Original Image is (in pixels WxH) 8741 x 5831. And I am working in a 720x480 project. I know, I should have created a 720x480 new file to begin with and conform everything to that then I wouldn't have this problem, but I didn't want to sacrifice image quality.
    Would I create a Null object 8741 x 5831? or Would it be 720x480?
What do you mean by copy the animation? Duplicate the layers? Or Copy & Paste?
Then after I am done with that should I go back into Photoshop and change the size?
Sorry if this seems silly but I have not run into this problem yet. I think next time I will change the image size before I start animating.

  • I am using Photoshop CS3 and the image looks ok on screen, but when I print the image is greenish.

I have checked with the printer's help desk and they say that this problem is not the printer, and there are no settings to change on the printer. Adobe no longer supports CS3. The immages look OK on screen, but when I print the page, the immage comes out kinda greenish, (more like, quite greenish). I don't know how to fix this problem or where to adjust any settings. Also to mention, the images are completed after a 2 day process, and this musst be done by Dec 22, 2011. Are there simple print options that will fix this problem?

You're getting into color management territory here and you need to target troubleshooting more specifically.
Basically you have a document profile that defines the colors. That profile is then converted (translated) into
    1. A monitor profile for display, and
    2. A printer/paper/ink profile for print.
If both profiles are good you'll get a reasonable match (allowing for the inherent differences between screen and paper).
If they don't match either could be wrong. So first off, is the monitor calibrated, or are you using the Windows default (sRGB), or a manufacturer provided profile?
Second, printer color management can be a bit obscure in that some manufacturers "hide" color management by doing it all under the hood and expecting sRGB input. Others, like Epson, allow you to pick the profile. This makes everything more transparent and makes troubleshooting much easier.
    EDIT: cross post.

  • Cursor disappearing using Photoshop CS4, CS5, CS6

My cursor started dissappearing in Photoshop on not 1 but 2 iMacs right after I installed Mountain Lion. As I am having this issue on 2 machines running 2 different versions of Photoshop and the fact it started happening the minute after I installed Mountain Lion. I have contacted both Adobe and Apple people. Adobe has been great responding to all of the Digital Design professionals that rely on these products to make a living. I have no doubt Adobe has done everything they can just for the simple fact that they are still talking to people about this on a discussion group that I started on Adobe's website 4 months ago. Apple's support people on the other hand are no longer acknowledging my emails regarding this very serious flaw in the new OS code. Apple has the money, resources and people to fix this issue. An issue that in my opinion, should have never happened.

nope... this is a known issue for users. Hopefully will be resolved soon (not holding my breath though). Some people have suggested resetting pram, uninstalling flash, quitting Safari, updating java, installing third party mouse driver software etc... but for me nothing has worked yet.
I have 2 monitors and this happens quite a lot, but ONLY on my iMac monitor. If i move the mouse cursor to my second screen it's visible there, move it back to my iMac screen and it disappears.
My workaround is to hover over the dock to claim my cursor back, but that is really just an annoying thing to do every 5 mins.
I am convinced this is a OSX issue but the two companies are just pointing fingers which will not result in any fix any time soon.
Thinking about selling my two Apple machines because of this bug.

  • Should i upgrade from photoshop cs3 extended to photoshop cs6 non extended

hi im just wondering should i upgrade from photoshop cs3 extended to photoshop cs6 NON extended...... would i loose options from my extended version?
also i dont use photoshop cs3 that much, does anyone think its worth me upgrading?
    thanks
    lee

    Good day!
I think I read that with 2013 the upgrade path would be shortened, so you are probably not eligible for upgrading anymore.
Apart from that the benefit of purchasing the current version of Photoshop naturally depends on what you are doing with Photoshop (both in terms of which features you use and how much you use the application overall).
Smart Objects have been improved quite a bit, Puppet Warp is an interesting feature, Configurator allows for the easy creation of custom Panels that can combine Tools, Commands, Actions etc.,  …
But to judge the programm yourself you could just install the trial – mind you, the trial is Photoshop Extended, so you may want to consult the Reference on which features you would not get with Potoshop Standard.
You might also want to look into Cloud Licensing – or at least »Adobe« wants you to …
