Use Product Recovery Disc on different Thinkpad for virus recovery?

Hi,
Three days of struggling to clean an infected Thinkpad so I am ready for drastic action.
Wife's  T60 2007-43U rendered useless by ramnit virus. Long story, but reformat seems like only solution.
Have T60 2008-SAA with as-built installation, and expect I can make  Product Recovery discs for that machine.
Also have T60P 2007-8JU working fine, but with no recovery partition or great Thinkpad utilities,Sonic or WinDVD as reformat by previous owner deleted them. All three computers have XP Pro with SP-3.
Questions:
1. Can self-made Product Recovery Disc from one Thinkpad be used to reinstall factory load on these others?
2. If so, should doing that completely clean the disk of existing virus and leave it in "new" condition?
3. Understand 6 CD's make up the factory set of Recovery Discs. The  as built load is about 10GB! Is there a list somewhere of what all is included in the Recovery?  Before I start making these discs, should I expect a total of 6, more, or fewer?
Thanks!

Returning to give you feedback on the success of this recovery. The T60 went from being a doorstop to fully functional!
Thanks again to ajkula and TuuS for their suggestions. Helped me through a harrowing experience.
I made a full set of Product Recovery Discs, 6 cd's, but did not use them as it would have restored I assume to Windows XP or XP SP2 as originally shipped. The source computer had been upgraded to XP SP3 and was up to date on all Windows Patches. I decided to give it a try with Rescue and Recovery to take advantage of those upgrades. I made a full set of R & R discs and with nothing on the computer other than the original load and Firefox, it took 10 cd's.
On the target computer, the one with the virus damage, I set the bios to start from the CD drive, then, as ajkula suggested, and many other anti-virus sources endorsed, I wiped the disk, and I used dBan for that. Worked well in "short DoD mode" and took about 3 hours on a 60 gb drive. I had never tried that before.
I loaded the R & R start-up disc and from there on all I had to do was insert the next disc when instructed. This took several hours because I was not always paying attention when it called for the next disc. The only  confusion was after the start-up disc ran and formated the drive, on the next disc, it warned that it was going to format the drive. I don't know if it did it twice or if the message is just poor communication. It went through to the end, and the result is the previously virus ridden computer is now 'identical" to the source. The hardware is similar but not totally identical . As TuuS suggested, the drivers must have been there as I did not have to add any drivers during this operation or since.
Regards to all,

.  I have Adobe Actobat 7.0 Standard for quite a while, and I'm happy with it. I use it for mainly filings at the federal court.  They require PDF.  I use two computers in two different states for work.  I realize my Adobe 7.1 is a few years old, but sometimes I have difficulty using it with the other days downloading a boarding pass, and e filing at the USDC. .  There's a problem with Adobe Flash, media, etc.  and other Adobe programs, (which I use for downloading boarding passes for airlines, etc.) so basically I have to delete these other Adobe programs, besides the Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Standard if I want to 7.0 Standard to work.  I periodically download the updates, but there's still a problem. My question is:  Can or should I purchase another program to update the present Adobe Acrobat 7.0 standard, or just buy a new program such as the Adobe 11?  Am I mistakenly doing something wrong, such as when I download?  I'm an old valued customer so I don't want to spend a lot of money since I am replacing my Dell XP for a new computer now, and my other computer is a Dell Vista.
    I'd appreciate your valued advice.

If you are getting a new computer (for a PC it would have Win 7 or 8), then you will need to purchase XI if you wish to continue using Acrobat. Acrobat 7 is not compatible with these systems (and probably the same for MAC systems), though sometimes workarounds are possible, though not easy to use. I guess the answer is to buy the new version. Try http://www.adobe.com/products/catalog/software._sl_id-contentfilter_sl_catalog_sl_software _sl_mostpopular.html, click on the Buy for Acrobat, and then select the version you want.

  • Recovery disc does not work for Satellite A100-197

I am working on a A100-197 that would not boot into ordinary Windows but was able to boot into Safe mode.
I used MSConfig to turn off everything at startup and all non-MS services. No good.
I used system restore. No good.
I scanned for viruses, rootkits etc. None found. No good.
I copied data to another hard drive using safe mode with networking and inserted the recovery DVD.
Went through unpacking and got message telling me to remove DVD - did this and system appeared to freeze.
Hit the exit button and it rebooted but Windows froze (the moving blobs stopped moving). Tried safe mode
but got a message saying that the system installation did not finish.
Tried the recovery again but this time I left the unpacking screen at 100% overnight to see if
it did anything. It didn't. Clicked exit and got the same as above.
Formatted HDD in partition magic and tried again. No good.
Created 5GB FAT32 partition and copied DVD files to FAT32 partition. Tried to run the unpacking program
from DOS. It refused to run in DOS mode.
I'm thinking of linking the hdd to another machine and running RecoUnpack.exe from a working PC to
unpack the image files onto the laptop HDD, but this is crazy - the recovery disc is supposed to recover the
system. What else can I try?

Thanks Dennis. I was starting to think similar things myself.
There was a program installed called Daemon Tools which uses
SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD) layer. My analysis suggested this was the rogue
program but I followed all the uninstall procedures and couldn't seem to solve the problem.
I don't suppose (and I've never had anything like this before) that it could have fouled up
something in the hardware layer? I tried resetting the BIOS to default settings. Maybe I should
flash the BIOS? Could it have altered any other ROM on the laptop? Is there other ROM on
    the laptop?
I hate software that ruins computers! Why can't people just use their b***** machines for sensible
    things?

  • T43: Recovery Discs are corrupt and Rescue and Recovery won't restore from the Hard Drive?

I recently created Recovery Discs in Windows XP, but when I insert Disc 2, it always says that it is the incorrect disc so I cannot continue the factory restore.
Now I'm trying to restore by booting into the Rescue and Recovery on my hard drive, but it cannot find the hidden factory partition on the hd. It also now says that the restore had a "convertion" error when it wouldn't recognize disc 2 and will not let me try to look at my hard drive to restore anymore. If I use the RR boot disc, it will let me try to restore, but it finds nothing restorable on the HD.
I did look at the hard drive and see 2 partitions with one being a IBM_SERVICE partition with 3.9GB total size and 2.9GB free space.
    Please help, thanks.

    Hi,
maybe somebody here could help me. i've totly lost the original partition of IBM on my T41 thinkpad. If somebody could advise me how do i get it back, i would appreciate it very much.
    Thanks,

  • What's the best program to use if I am trying to check for viruses/malware on my Mac?

I went to what looked like a normal website and got a warning that said "This site may harm your computer." I left the site right away, but now I'm wondering if there's some sort of program I should use to see if my Mac got any kind of virus or malware from the site.
    - Thank you

Are you using the browser add-on "Web of Trust"? I use that and simply do not go to a website that it classifies as having a poor reputation (unless I do know the site).
Although I have had WOT installed in most of my browsers for a long time, I must say that I'm often disappointed with the results. Ratings can be entered by any registered users and there seem to be some "super users" who'd ratings count more than others, making it almost impossible for other users to overcome the rating by somebody who has a grudge against a particular web site. I also find sites that are simply a bit overaggressive in their advertising to be rated just as RED as one known to dispense malware. There doesn't seem to be any policing of the ratings, either.
I don't think I would ever not use it, but I do tend to double-check the results with something like Google Safe Browsing (which is probably what alerted the OP) if it's a place I really want to visit.  They seem to have a much better system for rating sites in real time and getting them cleaned up before taking them off the blacklist and give me a better explanation of what was found than do the WOT ratings which too often are not explained.
Again, I agree with you that being warned by WOT is better than no warning at all.

  • Windows 8.1 notebook , recovery using recovery disc

my spouse after  spending less than 10 hours in 20 years of having computers in our home thought he had made recovery discs after I purchased his notebook for him.
It turned out he did not follow the instructions correctly and made only 1 recovery disc.
Now I have the recovery discs set but some say to press the F10 key and others say the F9 key, which is the correct way to do a recovery, no speakers are attached right now and it is plugged directly into the wall outlet, not even connected to the Internet.
I purchased it for him with windows 8 pre installed and 8.1 downloaded with the updates, he did a restore but is no longer working correctly, no apps or email,( windows live mail). When he turns it on updates download and then uninstall and then his notebook freezes up, it seems he cannot do a recovery from the partition on his system.
Would someone please tell me the correct way to do a recovery for my spouse so that I can fix his notebook .As I said he rarely uses any computer not even to check his email, he leaves that for me to do.
As for me I am more familiar with windows 7 and hate windows 8.

it is  F9 key. The HP instructions here should be helpful:

  • S12 Nano Product Recovery Discs (XP) and Warranty Upgrade (US)

I ordered an S12 system on the basis of its weight, marginally acceptable keyboard, and a 16:10 screen, more specifically, 800 pixels height, and XP.   Out of the box, all looks good other than some quirky behavior of the numlock setting and the cheap "Veriface" software blocking the normal XP logon box.  It isn't the fastest box in town, but compared to the other netbook options 95% of which force Windows 7 starter when coupled with the larger screen, it can't be beat.
But I've hit a dead end, trying to order a product recovery disc set - they exist for the S10 series, but seemingly not for the S12.  Is there a secret place to order them?
We're expecting this unit to survive through the remaining 3.3 years of high school.
But Lenovo doesn't seem to offer any extended warranty in the US.  Are they telling me I'm SOL after a year?

  • Windows Vista's Recovery discs

I cannot load the Windows Vista's Recovery discs (3 in all).  The Recovery manager didn't open.  I went up to step 3 only.  I guess the recovery disc (disc 1) didn't work .
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi:
Sometimes the recovery disks don't work for one reason or another.
If you can still read all 25 characters of the Vista product key on the Microsoft COA sticker on the bottom of your PC, you can make your own Vista installation disk which should at least get an operating system reinstalled on your PC.
    Here's how:
If you're up to a slight but rewarding challenge you can make your own if you can read your 25 character Vista product key on the PC.
Just download the 3 files you need at the link below, and read all of the instructions to create a bootable DVD installation disk using imageburn.
Disregard the part of the text under the first screen shot about "extract the files to the Vista folder."
The files were already extracted to that folder when you ran the X14.exe file by reading the text on top of the first screen shot.
The other thing I noticed is on the 4th screen shot, where it shows Developer ID Microsoft Corporation. I had to type Microsoft Corporation in myself, and then the other codes automatically populated.
When I went to compile the ISO file, ImageBurn gave a message that about a WIM file and ISO, and if I wanted to burn it in a different format.
I selected No, make the ISO file.
It was not that hard to do. I burned both the 64 bit disk and the 32 bit disk in case I ever need them.
I tested both of them on my hp dc7100 CMT desktop PC, they worked perfectly.
When you enter the product key, it knows what version of Vista you have.
After you successfully install Vista, you can then install the drivers from your PC's support and driver page.
Update:  This is the new link to make your own Vista installation media.
Click on the link below and then click on the PDF link labeled Windows Reinstallation Guide.
Follow the instructions on pp 295 - 297.

  • Windows 7 Home premium recovery disc

Hi guys. This is my first post. So i own a HP pavilion dv6 3010-us which runs Windows 7 Home premium 64 bit. I had a problem with my laptop and the only way I knew how to fix it was to perform a clean install of the OS. So I gave a guy my laptop to reinstalll my OS and he installed a different OS! My laptop now runs on Windows 7 Enterprise. I want my laptop back to its default factory OS. My laptop didnt come with a recovery disc, it only came with a recovery partition on the hard drive. But whenever i attempt to boot up my laptop in recovery mode, it tells me "BOOTMGR is missing" I don't even know how to fix this error. And my laptop isnt even booting up windows now cause I set the recovery partition, that is not working, as the active partition. Please how do I get my laptop back to its default OS? I dont have a recovery disc and I cant order it/them from HP. Is there a way that i can create a recovery disc that will help me fix my laptop? (If im able to restore my laptop to factory OS, I hope i'll still have all the HP features and software)

You won't be able to recover to the original operating system.
Once the guy installed W7 over the original one, you lost the use of the recovery partition. It is basically useless space now.
The only other thing you can do is to use the product key (if you can still read all 25 characters of the W7 product key) on the bottom of your notebook to install the operating system that came with your notebook.
Most dv7 consumer PC's come with W7 Home Premium 64 bit, so here is the direct link to the Microsoft digital river W7 x64 Home Premium SP1 ISO file.
    http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-24209.iso Windows 7 Home Premium x64 English
Make sure you get the whole file to download.  Sometimes it reports download complete but you didn't get the whole 3.xx GB file.
Then either use your DVD burning program's burn ISO file option to burn the file to a DVD so that it is bootable.
Burn at the slowest speed you can.
Or, use this tool to transfer the file to a 4 GB USB flash drive or DVD.  This tool will also make the media bootable.
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool
Then go to your PC's support page to get the available driver and software you need.
If your notebook is running OK with W7 Enterprise installed, then doing the above will not change anything other than to provide you with the operating system that came with your notebook without any of the additional software.
