Use Reliance or FAT32 for PXI Realtime

when i tried to format the hard disk on a pxi system, it offered two choices: Reliance (NI Recommanded) and FAT.  What's the advantage of Reliance over FAT32?  besides the 'no data loss during power off'.
Our application generates hundreds of hundreds of files (some tiems 500+ files in a single directory, with file sizes varing from 1MB to 50MB).  Can the Reliance file system handles this kind of usage without much performance hit?  and how about file fragmentation?
Thanks,
-Joe

Hi Aditya - in the future, it is best to create new forum threads for new questions to make the database searchable.
I have not been able to find away to increase the file size for reliance systems. You could try FAT32 but that system is not fault safe and has potential to corrupt the disk if power is lost during IO. This could be a pretty big risk when writing such large files.
We highly recommend decreasing your file size to be under 4 GB. This helps prevent corruption and makes your program more manageable. Please see the Best Practices for Target File IO with LabVIEW Real-Time document.

It would be helpfull to know what PXI hardware and what sensor you are using.
Up to now I only found mechanical limitations ....

  • Video Output for PXI Embedded Real-Time Controller ?

I plan to purchase a PXI Embedded Real-Time Controller for security monitoring.
Is it possible to use the video output of a PXI Controller running RTOS to display messages from a LabVIEW RT application ? According to the documentation, it seems that the use of the video output is only possible for PXI Controllers running Windows XP.
Does it exist a specific application to do this with LabVIEW RT ?
    Thanx.

    Hi Yann,
The situation seems a bit confusing as in the link you've given above using the local monitor from a pxi labview rt system as the HMI without a pc attached, two messages (here and here) say that it is possible to display an image on the video output of a PXI RT controller using a function of the NI-IMAQ librarey (namely, the IMAQ RT Video Out VI) !
I have the NI-IMAQ library but no PXI controller to test if this solution should work or not
Does anyone have the answer ?

  • How to communicate with a 9401 module using 9151 expansion and 7813r PXI card

    Hi,
I have just started working with my 7813 R-series card.  I was able to create a simple VI in which I could send and receive digital signals.  Now I would like to do something similar using my 9151 expansion chassis and 9401 C-series module.  If possible I would like to do all of this using windows (no RT for now).  Right now I am right-clicking on "my computer" in the project tree and adding new devices to find the 7813.  From there I have a rough idea of how to build a simple VI using the NI example.  However, I do not know where to look for the expansion chassis or the C-series module.  If any one could give me some advice or point to an example, that would be great.  I have seen the examples in Example Finder for the 9401, but they seem to be using a compactDAQ system as opposed to the PXI setup.
    Thanks for the help!

    Hello ACE_Lab,
The steps you should take in order to configure your setup in the LabVIEW project window is as follows:
    Step 1...
Step 2...This step should auto-populate with the existing PXI-7813R if it is connected. If you want to setup the target without the card connected, the you can just add a new target as follows.
Step 3...This is the point at which you will be adding the NI-9151 expansion chassis:
    Step 4...
    Step 5...
Step 6...If you have the module connected to the chassis, you should be able to see the module in the list:
Step 7...If the module is not connected, you can just select "New Target or Device" from the menu in step 6 and add a new target as follows:
An example from the Example Finder called "Digital Line Input.vi" should be a good place to start. Below is a screenshot of roughly where you need to start:

  • Suitable Laptop for PXI-1033

I am using a PXIe-8360 with a PXI-1033 and am trying to find a laptop that is compatible with this system.  NI states that not all laptops work with this configuration and has a list of laptops that do have been tested at (http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/5035).  This list is outdated and NI does not give any criterion on how to select a laptop that will work with this system on the webpage.  We have purchased an Acer 5680 and it doesn't seem compatible.  Is there a more recent list of laptops that are compatible?

    Hi PP83,
I am afraid that the knowledgebase article you located (http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/5035) has the most up-to-date information regarding compatibility between laptops and the Expresscard-MXI for PXI and PXI Express.  National Instruments is actively testing motherboards and laptops so that we can comment on compatibility with our MXI products.
For information on motherboards, desktops, and workstations compatible
with MXI products, you can create a service request with National Instruments PXI Support group at ni.com/support.

  • While using reliance netconnect getting message to shut down computer and restart

I have macbook pro os x 10.6.6. I am using reliance netconnect broadband+ with my mac but after 10 or 15 mins using internet i am getting message that i need to shut down and restart my computer. I am getting this message all the time. I find out that i need some drivers to fix this problem.
    any help
    Manohar

Hey Guys, I Had the same issue with a Reliance Broadband+ modem with model no. AC2736 while I was using it with my Macbook Pro containing OS X 10.6.7 (I recently updated the OS so its now 10.6.8) after using the modem for sometime I had a prompt in dark screen popped up in 5 different languages asking me to force restart the computer and I did it. The problem persisted after repeatative trials of resolving it by means told by Reliance customer support and also mentioned in different internet forums.
Then I went to the dealer and asked them to exchange the modem because its a problem with the modem (or software) and then to called Reliance customer support for a proper and effective solusion. After repeatative trial the modem manufacturer's athorised accociate in Calcutta comfirmed that ZTE does not have any update for Mac OS X 10.6.5 onwards so as of now, there is NO solution for this problem (confirmed first by ZTE and later Reliance). So if you guys are having any problem with this modem and the its still under warranty, call the customer support, they will take this modem back and refund your money as they promised to do in my case.

  • Where i can find exemples for PXI-2564 relay module

    hello,
I'm beginner in PXI module using.
I bought a PXI solution for use it as a custom instrument.
My aim is to read RTDs and command some line using relays.
So i take the system below:
    NI PXIe 1071
        PXI-8100
        PXIe-4357
        PXI-2564
I can see all the material on NI MAX.
In MAX, i can read RTD a channel value and can operate relays.
i have read and practice exercice on "Getting started with Labview RT module" and all it works,But i don't find any resources or exemple to deal with relay card or read RTD.
I have try to access it using "visa connect" and this step works, but what must i do to go further.
In a first time i want to swap relay position, by reading position, invert value ,set position and return the value.
And for RDT i'll want to make a simple measure and make a average a N measure for 1 or all input.
Can you give me some exemple or trick?
    Best regards

    Hello,
What software do you use? what version?
Have you look into the LabVIEW Example Research with KeyWord "Relay". There are examples with NI-DAQmx and niSwitch drivers.

  • Where to find connectors for PXIe plugin card

Can anyone help with information about XP4/XJ4 connectors for PXIe: Suitable vendor type numbers?
We want to make a custom card to plug into a PXIe-1071 chassis - but only need the 3.3V power from the chassis. But after long search I was unable to find a type number for such a connector. XJ4 is the smallest but obviously any of the connector types will do as they all have power pins.

    Hello heel.
I have searched in our internal papers, and according to my findings we are using ERNI as a manyfactor for our connectors.

Also, since you want to design for own PXI board, you might be able to find some usefull information in the PXI specifications.

  • Best filesystem format to use on External disk for windows and OS X access?

I have a external harddrive (250GB) that I want to be able to access in Windows Vista (through bootcamp) and also in OS X. Whats the best format for the filesystem on that drive so that I can access it both OS's?

    Hi,
I have been looking for this post!.
My girlfriend has a windows based laptop. I have a macbook pro and we both need to share an external hard drive (Maxtor 3200, 300gb). The external hard drive is currently formatted as NTFS. When I tried to access the drive from my macbook pro, it gives me an error, basically asking me to initialize the drive, which I won't do (got lots of data in it). After some net research, and reading this post I now know that I have to format it in fat32. I guess that my questions are:
Is this the only solution? How stable is the fat32 format? Can I use another file format for two different environments Mac OS and Windows?

  • VISA programming for PXI devices

Im using PXI 1031 with celeron 850 mhz embedded controller. Pxi serial interface is connected on one of the slots, and have 2 RS422 serial devices connected.
I wanted to know how to use VISA to communicate and control devices. I am also confused as to running VISA on the PXI controller.
I would also like to know:
    1) If the PXI chassis with the serial interface is connected to a PC via the ethernet, how would the I communicate with the Serial devices. would it be detected as a PXI device or as a serial device?
    2) If I load VISA on the pxi controller, how would VISA detect the serial devices. would it detect as a Serial device or as a PXI device?
    Hope im clear enough.
    Please reply at the earliest.

    Hello,
The remote connection you use to talk to your PXI chassis should not affect your VISA programming. More specifically, a PXI serial interface should show up as a COM port, and you can use VISA to communicate with it via its resource name (usually an alias such as COM2). How you use VISA will depend on your choice for development platform. For example, in LabVIEW you could use VISA Configure Serial Port.vi along with VISA Write, VISA Read, and VISA Close functions. You may also use a property node for more advanced features. In any event, if you repost with your choice of development environment, I can likely point you to an example you can use to get more comfortable.

  • ZigBee for PXI

    Hello !
Does anyone know how to check if ZigBee is correctly activated on a PXI ?
I have installed NI ZigBee Toolkit 1.0.1 on it.
I did not have any problem during the installation process.
But I have no idea if ZigBee is now activated or not.
    Any ideas/tutorials are welcome.
    Thank you !
    Aina

    Hi Noah !
Thank you for your help !
    Well, the toolkit files are located in C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 2013\vi.lib\RF Toolkits\ZigBee.
Here is a print screen that shows all the files in the ZigBee directory.
Do you think I installed the toolkit correctly ?
If I did but it still does not work, does NI has a newer (or the latest) version of NI ZigBee Toolkit ?
Or which another software do you use to activate ZigBee on PXI since NI ZigBee Toolkit 1.0.1 is no longer distributed ?
    Thank you !

  • Suggest Embedded PC for Labview realtime

    All,
It appears that I am not going to be able to use a cFP/cRIO for my applications am going to need to migrate (Back) to an embedded PC.
Previously I have been using windows xp embedded with a labview .exe which has been diabolical to be polite, windows is not a nice embedded environment.
I am investigating the use of NI LabVIEW Real-Time Deployment License for Desktop PCs and would like to see if anyone has any recommendations.
My application uses Comms (485/422) to interface with it's world, so built in comm ports are preferred.
Speed needs to be >800 mhz 0-50 degrees c.
Advantech have a range that may be suitable but I am interested to see if anyone has actualy successfuly done it before heading down a dead end path.
Problems tend to be drivers for ethernet or plug in cards
    Thanks

    Hi Timmar,
Thanks for the detailed post. As you already stated, whenever converting a PC to a LabVIEW Real-Time ETS PC, the biggest thing to watch out for will be compatibility of Ethernet chipsets and processors. Since you don't have the Advantech embedded PC yet, you can check for hardware compatibility by referencing this Knowledge Base article: http://www.ni.com/white-paper/8239/en
If you do get your hands on any of the embedded PC or if you have a really awesome friend at Advantech, you can run a test program through a USB utility which can test out the hardware compatibility for you: http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/9209361E17708D548625744A007FF353
With these two documents, you can get started on building your own LabVIEW RT PC.
