Use Rescue and Recovery to get back to factory settings?

Hi,
I want to restore my X220 laptop with Windows 7 to the factory settings. A while ago I got rid of a trojan and ended up losing some important DLL files, and I don't have a Windows restore point from before the trojan.
I clicked on the Lenovo Recovery (Q) drive. I then clicked "Create Recovery Media." However, I got the error Windows cannot find 'C:\. . . recovburncd.exe'. I read elsewhere in this forum that this means I should have created a recovery disk before I installed Windows.
I called the Lenovo technical support, and told them that I downloaded Rescue and Recovery and asked if I could access the Q drive through this software. I said I planned to "Create Rescue Media." They said this was the right way to do it.
So, I clicked on Create Rescue Media and used a DVD. However, when I looked at the contents of the DVD, I couldn't tell whether I had accessed the Q drive. What do I need to look for to verify that I have the correct content and am ready to reinstall Windows and the rest of the factory-origin software? Do I next use "Restore your system from a backup"? When I click "View all backups" there are no backups found because I haven't made any. Do I also need to use the "Backup your hard drive" tool? I can see the option to include the Q drive in the backup, but I cannot see a way to only backup Q.
My main concern is not to wipe the computer and then find out I don't have the right software ready to install because I use this computer for work everyday. I do have a backup system for all my files, so I will be ready to put those back on the computer after reinstalling Windows 7.
I appreciate your help.

If your factory shipped system was win 7, you should still have the recovery partition.
If your factory shipped system was Vista, and Install win 7 on top of it, you DO not have a recovery partition with 7 (it has vista).  I dont think this is your case. RNR v 4.5  will NOT install if a vista recovery partition is present.
PF11 at boot up time, and go into RNR standalone.  You should see an option for a Factory restore.  You MIGHT have to go several layers into the RESTORE my system screen to find this option. You MIGHT find a factory restore option on the RNR windows platform (buried in a restore panel) , but I would l Not expect it.   Boot into rnr standalone.
==
The recovery burncd.exe is a misleading message.  It probably should say YOU HAVE already taken a factory recovery backup(you can only do this one time  After factory restore, you can do it again).. I will post a link to another post on how to fix this.
====
CREATE rescue media is just a Standalone RNR. 1 DVD, no Q partition.  It will boot up and act like standalone rnr(pf11).  It will offer a factory restore option  if it finds the Q partition.
Standard Take a back up now with RNR is just a backup of the C (and maybe q).  You do not need to take this backup as  your C drive is not in good shape. and Q is already available to use.
====
Create Factory recovery is a backup  set of 3 dvds to REstore the Q drive back onto a hard drive. After restore of Q it will start a factory install. Running the 3 dvds WILL erase the whole drive. DVD 1 is boot, 2 and 3 are data.
Rescue= backups of c
Recovery=Factory restore of Q partition.
In a couple of days, after you get your factory restore done, use the Create Factory Recovery set to DVD.  takes 3 dvd.  This can be used in 4 years to repopulate your HDD (q drive) after your current HDD fails due to hardware error.

  • Blue Screen error message after using Rescue and Recovery.

    Good morning - I unfortunately had to use the IBM Rescue and Recovery feature to restore my factory settings.  However, now my computer is giving me a blue screen error during the startup process.  Unfortunately it is not on the screen long enough for me to get too much information from it, but I have been able to get win22n51.sys as being some sort of error message.  If I start the computer in safe mode it will load without the error.  If I use the safe mode plus networking it gives the error.  So I'm assuming it has something to do with the network drivers?
    I would appreciate any ideas you all have for resolving/further diagnosing this problem.
    Thank you!

  • How to restore backed up files after I used Rescue and Recovery

    Hi there lenovo community,
    so I'm struggling to find a solution on how to open these files right here:
    Link to image
    First of all, the program I used to back up my hard drive was the Rescue and Recovery that my lenovo desktop came with. I used an external hard drive (WD My Passport, specifically) to back up my old hard drive. The problem that I'm facing right now is how I can open these files, they seem to be not working with any of the option programs the "open with" thingy offers me. If anyone knows  an easy solution for this please please respond to me immediately.. I would really really appreciate it.  I have important documents there.
    Thanks,
    Enrico

    When I had problems creating recovery media for my T60p I called Lenovo to ask for assistance. After giving the CSR a description of the errors I was encountering and what I tried to do about them, he decided it would be easier for both of us if Lenovo sent me a set of media. YMMV.

  • Using Rescue and Recovery to make backups from 3 different machines

    Hello, I have three Thinkpad laptops, T400, X61 and R61i. I want to back up them using one external HD. The HD is divided into three partitions, the smallest for X61, the medium for R61i and the largest - for T400. I backed up all my laptops into the proper partitions (base backups), but now, then I want  to make partial backups, they all are going to the largest partition (intended for T400). Is it possible (and how) to cause R&R to always use the same partition for each laptop while backing up it?
    Solved!

    Please read the following post:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Rescue-and-Recovery-backup-partition-second-ha...
    From this post:
    (1) Learn how to change security/options to peak inside the RRbackups folder
    (2) The conclusion
    outside of an existing RNR folder, For a NEW create RRbackups folder, it will choose the partition with the MOST FREE space.
    ===
    I will offer some commentary and match it to what you are seeing.
    (1) What release of RNR are on the 3 machines? same release? The newer RNR  (been like this for a while), uses the UUID to separate backups within the SAME backup folder.
    (2) for the C drive hdd, you CAN select another  partition on the C drive hdd to hold the rrbackups folder, from the Advanced menu parms. This option is NOT available for second HDD.
    (3) You will always have a RRbackups folder on the C drive.  If you uninstall RNR, the C drive RRbackups is deleted.  ***** Any RRbackups on external hdd will remain***
    (4) What you want to do will not work. RNR is expecting one RNR backups folder on the external hdd, thus implying only one backups folder. From RNR windows, view backups will ONLY show backups that match the UUID of the machine RNR is running on. If you run RNR standalone, you can go to the restore panel and check the "show all backups from all machines" options. This should show all 3 of your machines backups. There is no advantage to have 3 partitiions for 3 backup folder.  Sounds nice, wont work.
    ===
    I will walk you thru a basic how it works on your end.  Correct me if you see something else.
    (1) external HDD
    part 1. small.
    part 2. medium
    part 3. large
    All new partitions. All empty.  Back up large machine, it will chose part 3, create RNR backups folder, Take a FULL base backup. It will store the backup location in the C \RRbackups and the registry. This entry in the folder is named 0.  It should be roughly 1/2 the size of the Large machine C drive. Lets say 39 GB.  Run the next run.  This is an incremental backup (your term = partial).  This entry is named 1, and will be 2 GB., etc.
    You uninstall RNR. Reinstall, change location to Second. Run a backup.  This will be an incremental backup (2) and will continue where it left off. (ie, it should find the old folder with uuid inside).
    (2) the mess
    You backup medium computer. It will find the part3 RNR backups but no matching UUID. humm.. Will it use folder on part3 or choose a largest free space partition, like part 2.    You will have to test.  I would vote for part 3.
    ===
    In summary:
    I believe RNR is designed for only 1 rrbackups folder on an external HDD, regardless of the number of partitions. You seem to indicate you have 3 RRbackups folders on 3 partitions. Look inside each folder.  It might be just using part3 for all your backups and you just dont see it. (ie, were you using part 1 for small machine, took a backup, then added part 2 and part 3, etc). This might work.  Small machine is locked in on small part 1.  Large is locked in on part3. But if you uninstall RNR on small machine, reinstall, take backup.  hum.  It will probably switch over to part 3.  or find part 1.
    This is risk and time you do not need to take.  You want a solid plan that works. Based on this mess, I think RNR folks decided to design only 1 RNR backups folder on external.

  • How to restore Thinkpad T43 or R52 using rescue and recovery CD's

    The genuine IBM Recovery CD Set will re-install your ThinkPad T43 or R52 (listed types only) with the original pre-load factory software, including Windows XP Professional with a legal, valid license, and all the original IBM Drivers and applications.
    1. Set your Laptop to Boot From the CDROM Drive.
    IT MAY ALREADY BE set to boot from CD if a bootable disc is in the drive so try and see if it does first with the disc labed 'rescue and recovery'. If it does then just skip to step 2. If it does not then you will have to enter the computers BIOS setup to tell it to.
    NOTE: When in the BIOS SETUP DONT CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE if you are not absolutely sure what you are changing.
    ACCESSING THE BIOS:
     During startup at the first screen (says "IBM Thinkpad") press F12 then F1 to enter the bios setup program.
    Use keys to navigate to 'startup' then to 'boot'. Press enter and following instructions in the right hand panel move the items to make your CD or DVD drive (Atapi CD0) AHEAD of your main hard drive (IDE HDD0). It doesn't matter if 'legacy floppy or USB are ahead of either of them if they are not connected. PRESS F-10 TO SAVE AND EXIT the bios setup program.
    2.Restart the computer with the first disc i.e. Rescue and Recovery CD already in the drive. The recovery program will come up. A smaller window will come up.
    3.Follow the on screen prompts.
    Choose to restore to Factory Specifications to Install OS, Applications and Drivers
     At some point it may ask if there is a supplemental disk. This is the one that says 'Lenovo'.
    4.Follow on screen prompts (i.e. insert disk 1)
    5.The prompts will continue to ask for the discs in numbered order.
    6. Follow the instructions on the screen to restore laptop to factory settings
    7. Do not boot directly to the hard drive until the entire recovery process is complete i.e until you have used all the recovery cds for the set.
    8. During the recovery process the computer will reboot multiple times. Do not do anything to interrupt the process unless you are asked to insert any specific disk.
    AT THE END:
    Promps may ask for the supplemental disc again, follow the on screen prompts.
    Computer will restart, you may see the original recovery screen. BE PATIENT, The files still have to expand. You may not see any prompts for a couple of minutes.
    SOMETIMES: (I dont know why)
    After loading all the discs and after it takes you to the recovery program if nothing happens AFTER A GOOD PERIOD OF TIME, BE PATIENT, remove all discs and click on restore factory contents AGAIN. It will expand all the files (takes a while) and restore your system.
    Afterwards computer will restart multiple times as it continues to load windows, programs and drivers. Follow all the on screen prompts until it is done.
    Once everything is done go to microsoft (All Programs > Windows update) and load all new service packs and updates.
    Partially taken from the internet and written for a customer. Tried and tested. PLEASE ADD TO KNOWLEDGEBASE.
    NOTE: instructions may also be valid for other Model Thinkpads.

    IIRC this was the normal recovery/restore procedure for older ThinkPads.  First the recovery image is installed, then the machine reboots to Rescue and Recovery to use that image to restore the rest of the hard drive. User input is required at that point to select restore.
    Newer machines combine both operations.

  • How to use Rescue and Recovery on a T43

    Hello All-
    Ok, this is probably a lame question, so please bear with me...
    I have become infected with a nasty virus that has left me unable to load Windows. I am able to access Rescue and Recovery.
    If I "rescue all the files that have been created or changed from my last backup", will that include the virus?
    All I really need is "My Documents", but it sure would be convenient to have everything else, too.
    I am embarrased to say that I have never fully backed up my system.
    What's the best way to recover my system?
    Thanks so much!
    Danielle

    Hi Danielle,
    Consider this allegory; factory settings will make your thinkpad like a never driven 0 meter car [with reference to software]. Hence it will be far-flung from it's previous state. Apart from what you have already saved on memory stick, all settings and the software you have installed on the notebook will be lost.
    I hope this helps.

  • Can't restore my system on new computer using rescue and recovery

    Hi there,
    Yesterday I got my Thinkpad Edge stolen from my apartment. I had been keeping backups of my system on external USB HDD  using lenovo's rescue and recovery tool. Today I got a new Thinkpad edge and been runing the rescue and recovery tool but I am unable to see my backups. What can I do? How do I recover my info? Please HELP!

    How awesome that you took the time to answer and that you knew the answer. THANK YOU! I called lenovo support and they told me that if I didn't see the backups they were gone for good...that I had probably not saved them properly in the first place. I went to 2 computer technicians who were charging me as much as $400 and weren't sure they could fix the problem. The key thing in your answer, was "click on the checkbox that lets you see all your backups"...I had missed that before.
    So now I'm finished running a full system restore. However, now when I power up my machine it tells me that the operating system is missing. Is there anyway to fix that? My previous machine was a thinkpad edge 14, this one is a thinkpad edge e420...is that why is not recognizing the operating system? In the meantime, I'm again running the rescue and recovery software from a CD to copy the files in the restored local hard drive to an external location...hope that made sense.

  • Rescue and Recovery stalling when searching for system settings.

    Being a project manager, I like to back up my laptop regularly. As such, having the Rescue and Recovery set up to do this automatically is a God send.....well that was before April 2010.
    For some reason, when I start the Backup routine, it brings up the window that shows the progress and then another pop-up over that indicates that the program is looking for system settings. And that is where it stays. The only way I am able to cancel out of it is to shut down the computer.
    I have a T500 laptop running XP SP3, ThinkVantage 6 and Rescue and Recovery 4.
    I have an external hard drive which I have used for a number of months for this type of backup. It stopped working after an update of the ThinkVantage software. Sorry, can't tell you which update but it would have taken place between April 12 and May 12.
    Has anyone had the same issue and can someone please help.
    Pete

    Hi,
    although I have not seen this situation in the last time, but can you tell me, whether the USB HDD is the only place/store location, where you are storing the RnR backups?
    In case you are storing the backups also on the local HDD, then please disconnect the USB HDD and try to store the backup only on the local HDD, whether this will work.
    Please also try to check the Windows Event log, whether you will see there any note about RnR, or start debugview whether it will notice anythign. Also another thought press ALT+TAB if it is not possible, that there is some background window open.
    Cheers

  • Rescue and Recovery, unable to do a factory restore, no backup found

    Hi I'm trying to do a factory restore on my T510.  I've done it before but for some reason it's saying it can't find the backup files.
    Any idea on what I should do?

    Nope. lol  Like I said before I restored to factory settings before and I usually just went to rescue and recovery, clicked on don't save anything and factory restore.  I didn't have to insert any type of recovery discs set, do you know why now it's asking me for them?
    I might add that I recently had my T510 sent in for MULTIPLE repairs that were a complete dud.  I have that infamous whine noise smh.  They ended up replacing my hard drive and mistakenly downgraded my OS to 32-bit.  They didn’t know I bought Pro-64 smh.  I told them and showed them that I did purchase 64 when I customized my laptop so they ended up sending me a recovery disc set with the OS and drivers.  I used those to do a factory restore, basically did a clean reinstall right?
    Yeah you should be good. Now would also be a good time to burn another recovery disc set since you can burn one after each restore, this way you will have a backup.

    Change the monitor contrast in System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing:
    If your is set to "normal" like the above then it is a hardware problem with your monitor.

  • Error Message - Getting back to factory settings

    I have tried everything that I have read on here to try and get my music back on my iPod...and nothing has worked. I have a 20GB click wheel iPod...sorry for the length of this in advance!
    While updating my iPod, it decided to stop working (iTunes froze up). When I plugged it in again I would get an error message saying that iTunes could no longer read the contents of my iPod, and to use the updater software to get it back to factory settings. I have uninstalled and reinstalled older versions of iTunes, the newest version, along with the more recent updater software, and nothing is working. I have also tried resetting my iPod manually - through the menu and by holding the menu and select keys down. Also, I am not sure if this means anything or not...but when I plug in my iPod with iTunes running, and I get the do not disconnect screen, there is also a circle made up of 2 arrows in the top left hand corner that i have never seen before. Has anyone else experienced this problem or is there a known solution for this? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for the help!
    Rach

    I did some reading in the Connections forum...some people seemed to have solved their problem similar to mine by using fire wire - so I went out and bought a fire wire card...but guess what - no luck!
    This time I did get an error message though with a number...it is: "Attempting to copy the the disk "Rachel" failed. An unknown error occurred (-124)." Is it time to just throw the iPod out?
    On another note, I put a new hard drive in my computer, formatted it, and tried getting the synch to work. No luck there either. I started off with the software that came with my iPod, and gradually moved up to the new versions. Nothing worked - it always froze on song 25 (and they were always different songs because I always tried a different library). I hate to say it, but I feel like I have tried everything and anything to get this to work, and nothing seems to do the trick. I don't understand how the people in the Apple store said it worked fine and they had no problems getting anything to synch on here. I am not trying to sound rude here...i am just a bit frustrated! If you can think of anything else B that might help out, I would appreciate it If not...then it might be time to call it quits and never look back at Apple again!
    Thanks again for the help B - it is greatly appreciated!!

    HELP!!! How can I fix it?
    Many thanks,

    can you restore to factory settings you shouldn't need a PW to do that normally when R&R has a set password it will stay on the PW prompt page until the PW is entered I don't believe you can recover the PW not that I know of anyway . & forum rules don't allow post about getting around security measures so I couldn't post it if I knew
