  • Why has safari stopped opening pdf pages?

Has anyone had the problem that I've been having?  When I click on a link that contains a pdf, Safari used to open the file in a new tab for me to view.  Now, when I attempt that same procedure, all I get from Safari is a gray screen.
I've been to the genius bar and they erased my Mac and reloaded the operating system again.  Everything worked fine for several week but then today, it just stopped.  I was not doing anything out of the ordinary but the only thing I did today was set my system to use Adobe to open pdf files (not webpages) instead of Preview.  I did switch back and even removed Adobe from my Mac.
Please...any help???  I should't have to go and have my operating system wiped out and reloaded again.  There should just be a simple answer to turn something on or off in Safari.
I did try to reload Safari - deleted it and then downlaoded it again but apparently it never fully deletes because the new one that I download still has my bookmarks.  How can I do a full removal and new install??

    Back up all data.
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Acrobat distiller (first use) don't open PDF file what to do ?

    Hi,
Acrobat distiller (first use) don't open PDF file and give this message (in french)  : Erreur dans /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings/PDFX4 2008.joboptions : /CheckCompliance out of range Avertissement : Distiller ne traite pas les extensions de fichiers .PDF ou .JDF.
    What should I do ?
    Thanks for your reply.

No, Distiller does not do that job at all. Distiller makes PDF files, but it does not read them.
I am not sure what you are using: Distiller Server is finished as a product. Distiller comes with Acrobat also - this is not Distiller Server.
Acrobat Pro includes many tools for processing PDF files and can sometimes reduce file size. It can also convert to PDFX4 using Preflighting.

From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.

  • Safari uses Quicktime to open PDF

Safari claims to open PDFs in the browser. That's great. But then it uses quicktime to open the PDF and only displays the first page. I know you can download the file, but there must be a way to change this setting.
    anyone?

I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago; it started working correctly
    only after I re-installed the Adobe Acrobat Reader Plug-in Version 7.0.5 -
which is the application used to view .pdf documents. I also re-installed
QT Pro Version 7.0.4, but I don't believe it was the reason Safari was trying
to open pdf stuff with QT. Re-installing QT did fix another problem I had which
    was opening videos from CBS-TV.

  • Safari not opening PDF files

I had Acrobat Pro on Windows laptop.  Last weekend switched to MacBook Pro and upgraded to Acrobat X with help from Adobe Tech Personnel (and $215).  Now, I can open and create PDFs from Acrobat, but my Safari browser doesn't open PDF files when I click on them the way my Firefox did.  In fact, Safari just goes to black screen with little pinwheel in the middle spinning forever.   How do I tell my browser to use the Adobe Acrobat X app?  Thanks.

I'm sure this is my first of many Mac questions regarding Adobe.

What is the version of your Mac OS? Is Safari running in 64 bit (check from Safari->Get Info)? If yes, change it to 32-bit and try again.

  • Safari wont open .pdf files. Is here a setting that interferes?

On my iPad using safari,  and, with firefox on my iMac, I con open .pdf files on our club web page. However with Safari I only get a black blank when I try to open them on my iMac with Safari. FireFox works fine . Could there be a setting on Safari that is not allowing pdf files to open?
Here is the web page link. http://www.lhmac.org/lhmacnewsletters.htm
the same pdf files when e- mailed to me open fine on my iMac.

  • Safari cannot open PDFs in Preview

When I view a PDF in Safari and I choose the "Open PDF in Preview" icon it opens instead in Adobe Reader, not Preview. Control clicking gives the only option as "Open with Adobe Reader xx.x.x". I don't have the AdobePDFViewer.plugin, either at the root level or my user level of Library/Internet Plug-ins. So, how do I get a PDF to open in Preview when viewing it online in Safari?
To be clear, I'm not talking about opening a PDF from the Finder.
I'm using Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.10. Reader is at 10.1.3.

    Back up all data.
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, there should be a setting in its preferences such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected. Otherwise do as follows.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Safari now opens pdf in adobe after updating adobe. How to have preview open it as default again?

I just updated to the latest version of adobe, and now safari opens all .pdf files with adobe.  I would like to make it open .pdf with preview or have the option to open with preview (the menu appears when you move the arrow down to the bottom of the page) like it used to. Thanks.

There is (was) a setting in Adobe Preferences - Internet  about displaying in web browsers using...
failing that, remove anything with pdf in the name found in
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
    or if none there
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
where ~ is your Home folder
    Quit any browsers first

  • Safari not opening PDF's

Safari is unable to open PDF's anymore. I've been getting constantly frustrated by a black screen whenever i click on pdf links. For some time i assumed it was a download thing...even though there is no progressing blue bar in the address window, the link looks complete. There are never any error messages, all i get is a black safari window. I have checked in firefox and all download fine.
Is this a known bug? If so it's been going on for a particulary long time now.

    Hi
You may have an Adobe PDF plugin blocking the works. Go to your HD>Library>Internet Plugins folder.
If you see an Adobe PDF plugin, move it to the desktop. Then, go to your Applications folder and open either Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat. Open the preferences and uncheck the Internet setting for PDF reading.
Then restart Safari and try a PDF.

I did not remove anything from mozilla firefox that is stored in either appdata or under the windows users directory (if any)

  • How to make Safari automatically open PDFs in Preview?

Well, the subject says it all:
I would like Safari to download PDFs when i click on them and then open them automatically in Preview.
I don't want any plugins nor any Acrobat.
    Does anyone have any idea?
(I have tried acrobat and the schubert-it plugin, neither of them has really satisfied me, so i have removed both of them.)
I have, of course, looked in this forum for any hints, but, although there seems to be a lot of posts about the "safari & PDF" topic, i didn't find anything solving my question.
Any suggestions or hints will be appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Gabriel.

Not sure why you prefer to open the PDF outside of
    Safari?
    i think it's more convenient:
Acrobat is too slow; and when viewing PDFs inside Safari i don't have all the nice keyboard shortcuts for zooming, flipping pages, copying stuff from the PDF is not as smooth, etc. It's just the overall look-and-feel that's much nicer in Preview, IMHO.
Anyway, I guess you're saying Preview does not open
    after the PDF download.
    Yes, that's what i meant.
    Have you tried accessing the
info panel for one of the PDF files and changing the
"open with" selection to "Preview" - then, "change
    all"?
Now i am not quite sure what you mean.
In Finder, when i double-click a PDF it opens fine in Preview.
Also, in the info panel, Preview is set for the "open with" for all and any PDF.
    Best regards,
    Gabriel.
