Use several USB SuperDrives on a Retina MBP

I've got DVDs of different regions. I know there's a limitation for changing your region in OS X (and other operating systems), so after changing your region a few times, you can't change it anymore, so you can't play DVDs from another region anymore. I'm not completely sure, but I think this limitation is not software bound, but hardware bound.
That's why I'm wondering if it's possible to buy a seperate USB SuperDrive for each region? So, I just buy three USB SuperDrives, I connect one of them, put a region 1 DVD in it, OS X asks me to set the region to region 1 and then I can use that USB SuperDrive for region 1 DVDs. Then I connect another USB SuperDrive, put a region 2 DVD in it and OS X asks me to set the region to region 2. Then I connect the third USB SuperDrive and set it up as a region 3 drive.
Is this possible? After watching a region 3 DVD, can I just connect the region 2 drive to watch a region 2 DVD? Can I connect two USB SuperDrives at the same time? For example the region 1 drive and the region 3 drive and I can just put a region 1 DVD in the corresponding drive to watch the movie?
How about connecting the MBP to a television with HDMI? Can I just watch my DVDs with the DVD Player app using HDMI or is this not supported. I'm asking, because I've read AirPlay doesn't support streaming DVDs to an Apple TV. Does HDMI support this?
Thanks in advance.

  • Can I use the USB superdrive in Bootcamp?

So I just bought a brand new 15" MBP, and I didn't realize that Apple stopped shiping them with optical drives. I found out that I now need to get an external optical drive such as the USB Superdrive. Anyways, I need to put Windows 8 on the Mac through Bootcamp because I need to use an application with Windows. The application I need is an H&R Block tax program. I already own the program for Windows, so my goal is to install that program on my Mac with Bootcamp. However, the H&R Block program comes on a disc. So, my question is, can I use the Superdrive in Windows(Bootcamp) to install the program on my Mac? If not, what are my options?
    Thanks for any help.

Yes to superdrive working on boot camp and yes to installing it. You might want to check the H&R site, lots of companies now let you download installers so you don't have to use a disk

  • I would like to put all my iPhone videos to my macbook air than put it on a dvd to watch on any dvd player how would i do that using my usb superdrive and what type of dvd would i need

I have just transferred all my iphone videos into my macbook, now I would like to put these videos onto a dvd for playing on any dvd; how would I do that with my usb Superdrive dvd/cd drive. I don't see a option to burn. Please help and responses is greatly appreciated, I am a New macbook user.

You need an app like Toast by Roxio (http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/default.html).  You would use Toast to burn the videos to a DVD-R disc.

  • Can I use a USB superdrive DVD reader/writer with a mac pro?

The internal CD/DVD read/writer in my macpro (2 x 2.66 ghz dual-core xeon) broke, so I purchased an external USB superdrive, thinking I could use it as an external drive. It does nothing when plugged into the mac pro, I cant even insert a disk. It seems to not even have power.
Anyway I now see the device (superdrive) is intended for a macbook air or mac mini.
Am I toast? Is there no way I can get this thing to work with the mac pro?
I dont think I can return it, I've already discarded all the packaging.
    Thanks for any advice.

I agree it would not take a lot of time, 2 minutes perhaps for the world record holder, for me more like 10 perhaps, not including the time involved in purchasing the drive, figuring out how to recycle the old broken one that comes out, etc.
However the key point is that if I can get this drive to work, the cost will be $0, as I've already paid for it. So I would be most interested in doing that, if possible. If it's not possible, then I'll have no choice to pay $30 or however much, for a new one.

  • I have a dvd of a concert that I would like to copy to my mac and play without using my usb superdrive every time.  Is this possible?

I have a DVD of a concert that plays when connected via USB superdrive.  Can I copy this to my hard drive/desktop so that I can play it at times when I don't have the superdrive?  If so, how do i do it?

    is the DVD copyrighted?
if not you can convert it MP4 etc with an application like MDRP
otherwise is answer is no answer.

  • My iPhone 4 is not showing up in the left USB port on my Retina MBP. It does, however, show up in the right port. Thoughts on why?

It does not seem to matter if the computer is plugged into power, or if other devices are plugged into the other ports.
Can anyone tell me why, or give me solution?
    Thanks

There have been a number of reported problems with the USB 3 ports on the 2012 models. Several people  running Mountain Lion say that it 'fixes' the problems. Until then, see this Apple tech note - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5172#12.
Good luck - Mountain Lion is just around the corner and will hopefully fix some of the glitches.

  • Having problems with my new usb superdrive in my MBP retina display.

I just bought an apple usb superdrive for my new MBP retina display. I connected the usb superdrive to the MBP and I was going to install a program but doesn't appear in the desktop or neither in finder. The disk is still inside the usb superdrive! The MBP doesn't recognize the usb superdrive. What do I do now? The disk is still inside!

With the system turned on Disconnect the superdrive and then reconnect it. If that fails try the other USB port, the one on the other side.
If That Fails take the system and the superdrive to the Apple store you bought them from and have them fix whatever is wrong with either the drive or the system or both.

  • HT5630 how do I burn a dvd using usb superdrive to mac or itunes?

How do I burn my dvds onto either my Macbook air or onto itunes using external USB superdrive please??

"Burn my DVD" refers to the process of taking data FROM the Macbook and copying them TO the DVD, not potentially the other way around, as you have asked the question.
Are you wanting to copy (rip) movies from a DVD and place them into iTunes?
                        -or-
Are you wanting to copy (burn) a movie from a digital copy on your computer to the DVD?
The way you have asked the question makes no sense.

  • Problem installing software using USB SuperDrive

Hi You Clever People Out There
I've tried to search previous enquiries, but from what I can see there are similar issues but not specifically one to match my problem... So thanks in advance of any help you can offer and apologies if I'm doing something really dumb....
I've been trying to load some software (Vectorworks and Photoshop Elements, specifically) using the USB SuperDrive, which I understand should now be compatible with my latest model iMAC 27'' (I bought it last month)
However, I seem to have lost permission rights as when I click on the installation file I get a message saying 'the application can't be found' (same for both discs / programmes). When I go to 'Get Info', the Sharing & Permisions states 'you can only read', with no apparent options for changing the setting
I can load and watch DVDs and the SuperDrive flags up in Finder as 'remote disc', but when I try to Get Info for this, I just get 'General' and 'Preview' categories. A third category 'More Info' does not load  - it just shows a continuoisly spinning dial with the message 'Fetching...' - or at least doesn't appear to as I've let continue for over 30mins
Prior to this I had succesfully installed the programmes on my PC - which I am planning to phase out in preference to the MAC - and both the disks are formatted for MAC OS Standard
Needless to say I've tried the 'switching on/off' and therfore exhausted my IT support tool repertoire:-) so hopefully there's enough info here for someone to recognise what's going on.

The Disk Utility repair disk can't be run on the boot disk from the boot disk.  You must boot into another hard drive and run Disk Utility from it on your boot drive. Or you can try booting into the Recovery HD that Mt. Lion creates.  There you can run Disk Utility.  I'm not sure if you can repair disk with this method but it's worth a try. I've only used it to reinstall the system on my iMac. Apple - OS X Recovery restores your Mac with a few clicks.
Another possibility is to boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode.  During startup it will run some of the repair routines that disk utility does.  That may be sufficient.  Reboot and verify the disk again with DU.

  • Problem installing multi-disc software with USB Superdrive

I'm trying to install a large virtual instrument library for music production (Komplete 5). On a brand new Macbook Pro Retina, using the USB Superdrive for installation.  Typically with these installers, once it's finished with one disc, it asks you to insert the next DVD in the sequence to continue installation. The problem I've run into with the Superdrive is that it won't allow me to eject the disc, giving me an error message that the disc is "in use by the installer." This never occured on other Macs with an internal optical drive. I can't find any way to force eject the disc in order to move on with the installation.  I'm stuck until I can find a workaround.  Any suggestions?

  • How to share USB superdrive?

I'm trying to share my Macbook air's USB superdrive with my iMac (the iMac's superdrive broke for the 3rd time in 2 years time). How can I do this?
I set my Macbook air to share it's external superdrive, but it doesn't shw up on my iMac as a remote drive. How can I do this? I read http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5287 and it doesn't provide the solution.

The superdrive is connected to a USB port on a cinema display, which on its turn is connected to the macbook air.
Your SuperDrive will need to be directly connected to your MacBook Air.  Unfortunately (and for reasons, which to this date years late, I have yet to understand) Apple has designed the SuperDrive to ONLY work with Macs which do not come with a built in SuperDrive.  There's some debate between it being something they've done with the USB ports or drivers... but regardless, it will only work plugged directly into the Air.
With the SuperDrive connected to the Cinema Display... can you see it with your Air?  This is a bit of a unique configuration and I haven't heard of anyone trying to use a USB SuperDrive this way.

  • USB Superdrive issues with tracks beyond number 20

I bought an USB Superdrive for my Retina iMac. Now i can't transfer tracks beyond number 20 in to my iTunes. Let me explain, tracks 1 to 19 seems to transfer properly till it arrives to track number 20 then the transfer-procedure stops. I've tried with two CD and experienced the same problem. Not only the transfer to my iTunes is impossible, it is also impossible to play tracks. The CD's are fitness-CD if this matters to find the problem.
Does someone has an idea, what this could be? Thanks for helping out!

  • Use usb superdive on retina mbp win 7? Help!

I have alot of software on disks that I need to be able install on windows 7 on my new MacBook Pro with Retina Display.
When I plug in the USB Superdrive, nothing happens, it there any way to get it recognised?
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Ben

Like Shootist, I've not come across any definitive answer as to whether the USB SuperDrive that was sold for years for the MacBook Air is the same as that sold for the MBP-R. I know that they're both USB 2, that the price is the same, that they look the same, etc., but I don't know if it's a different part number. Since you're in your 90-day phone support coverage, I would call Apple and see if there is a 'right' USB 2 SuperDrive for the MBP-R's. I know that on my 2011 MBP, I can load anything into Windows using the built-in SuperDrive, so a USB SuperDrive should be enabled as well. Different machines, different connectors, yes, but still...
Call Apple and ask. And let us know as I'm very curious.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • USB superdrive on MBP with retina display

I just purchased the above today and my external USB superdrive is not working when connected to my MBP retina. From looking at other forums I can see this may have been an issue with previous MBP's as the super drives seem to be for MBA's or minis. Is there any way I can get the USB superdrive to work with any jailbreaking?

Could be it needs to be connected to both USB port by using a Y USB cable to supply enough power to it. And it won't show up unless there is a CD or DVD disc in it.

  • DVD-R or CD-Rs won't mount USB Superdrive MBP 15 inch retina

    Dear all,
I have a MBP 15inch 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 running OSX 10.9.5 and purchased an Apple usb Superdrive to burn discs.  I have tried inserting Verbatim DVD-Rs and Maxell CD-Rs but they won't mount.  Looking on the fora, I have tried repairing disk permissions but that hasn't helped.  Apple's own superdrive troubleshooting article doesn't help either.  The discs are not ejected - once inserted the drive makes some noise then stops.  Using Disk Utility I can eject the disc.
    Baffled.

I've sorted it.  I just had to go to System Preferences and choose my preferences for when I inserted a blank disc.  Because the MBP doesn't have an internal disc drive, all the options were set to "Ignore".  I replaced this with "Open Finder" and - Hey Presto - the disc DOES mount now.  I can now successfully burn photos from Aperture to DVD-R.
