Use Skype with MB Air?

Wife's employer seems to want her to use Skype with he MB Air, and was kind enough to send a headset/mic. Employer is a little Mac-clueless, so apparently they didn't realize the Air doesn't have the two jacks that the average Windows box has.
So - how do you all use Skype? with just the internal mic and speaker? Some plug-in heaset/mic that I'm not familiar with?
Any hints appreciated!

Hello,
all the cheapie headsets that come with iPod Touch, iPhone, or sold separately as accessories possess a mic and are actually using the same jack for input and output.

  • Can I use Skype with a macbook air and the face time camera

    I am an Imac user and learning this new macbook air. I have face time on this and am wondering if I can use skype with the facetime camera of if I need to add a remote web cam? I am not seeing the video function in skype.

    I've used mine a few times within Skype. No issues.
    The FT camera is suitable for any application requiring a camera, notwithstanding the "not so hot" resolution of the built-in camera on the MBA.
    Check the Audio/Video tab within Skype Preferences to select the built-in camera.

    Skype does not interface with FaceTime. You cannot use one to contact a person who is using the other.

  • Using Skype with Digidesign Mbox soundcard?

    not sure if this is in the right section for posting? I need to know how to configure Skype to use with my isight cam & digidesign m box. I configured it in the preferences then I tried the skype test call & i can hear the audio for about a second then it cuts out? At the moment i can use skype with the audio coming in from the built-in speaker on my mac but wanted it to come through the mbox soundcard?
    Can anyone help?

    I run an iMac with an original Mbox and FCE. It works fine most of the time. Occasionally it does boot without engaging the digidesign core audio driver. If that happens, go into your computer system preferences....click internal speakers (to switch to internal)...then click your digidesign hardware (to switch back to the Mbox)....and then it might work. Not sure why clicking and unclicking solves the problem, but it does.

  • Using Skype with the Mini

    I have a late-2009 mini and would like to use Skype video with it. Anyone have any experience with this? As much as I can tell since there is no camera or microphone and very poor audio capabilities I would have to purchase a webcam with camera & microphone and an external speaker system. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

    You would as you know buy a Webcam (and most webcams on the market have mics in them) Look into getting the new webcams that have HD video such as Logitech or Microsoft. I have used the Microsoft HD webcam on my 2009 mini and mini server and it works great.
    Logitech - http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Webcam-C910-1080p-Video/dp/B003M2YT96/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&qid=1292041536&sr=8-1
    Microsoft - http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-H5D-00009-LifeCam-Cinema/dp/B00359F1G6/ref=sr12?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1292041561&sr=1-2
    Of course you can pick whatever brand and model of webcam you wish and you can buy the webcam in any store.

  • Using Skype with iPhone 3Gs

    I have been reading a lot of conflicting statements as it relates to the ability to make calls at WiFi hotspots using Skype on a 3Gs phone...anybody have any recent experience with this - positive or negative?

    Afraid not. You can configure Skype or Truphone to stay connected when the phone locks, but they have to be running all the time to receive calls.
    Truphone can now tell you when you receive voicemail even if the app isn't running, so you can call back.
    <http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/truphone-os-3-0-for-iphone/id319994618?mt=8>
    Future versions of both apps could use push notification of incoming calls when the apps aren't running.

  • Using skype with the 3G

    Hey, has anyone figured out how to use VoIP with the 3G on iphone? I heard that this is only available with wifi, which kind of makes it useless. I would love to get a plan with minutes, unlimited wifi... and then just get unlimited world calling from skype. Has anyone done this?

    They don't do it because AT&T won't allow it. This is the same reason people cannot do FaceTime unless on WiFi.

  • Cant use skype with airport extreme

    i am exploring the idea of using skype for calls to canada from my iphone and eliminating my land line. i subscribed to the service and am having difficulty with connecting via wifi at home over airport extreme. Getting a connection seems to be hit or miss. i was connected a couple of times. i read in the skype support pages that airport is a closed network and will not support a skype connection. i found information about opening file sharing and modifying some port access. before i start playing around with that, i thought somebody out there has figured this out.

    I don't know where you read that, but I'd question the source. The term "closed network" in this context is a non-sequitur.
    Skype works fine with AirPort, even the older 802.11g version. It requires no special configuration. I haven't used it with an iPhone, but Skype worked with an iPod Touch (no mic though ) and runs fine even on my ancient G3 iMac. I'd speculate your internet connection might be too slow for reliable voice communication, but it is also possible the wireless connection to your iPhone may be a limiting factor.
    What kind of service do you have?

  • Mac crash when using Skype with webcam

    Today I used skype for videocalling on my brand new MBP 15". After 20 minutes the laptop crashed and gave me the "hold down the power button" screen.
    20 minutes later he crashed again. In the last 20 minutes I only used skype (1 videocall) and safari (google & wikipedia).
    Is there a way I can 'solve' this problem? (install a plugin, or something?)
    thanks in advance,

  • Use Skype with special user

    I followed the wiki instructions to use skype ith a special user. I chose the first method where you don't add 'skype' to the sudoers file. I don't know how to close the terminal window from which I started skype.
    Adding an ampersand to my newly created alias
    alias skype='xhost +local: && su skype -c skype &'
    doesn't work. Maybe somebody can give me a hint how I can make this work or what I'm getting wrong?

    The terminal will go back to the prompt after U shutdown skype!

    Just change the username, it's not very clear if all 3 are the same:)
    This should work;
    alias skype='xhost +local: && su <your_skype_username> -c skype'

  • No sound using skype with an ipad

    I hope you can help.  I am using an ipad with skype making a video call.  The person I am calling can see and hear me, but I can not hear them.  How can I fix this issue?

    No it's still there.  It's coming from my iMac speakers only on the windows side.  But if I play music through YouTube I hear the music through the headphone jack external speakers.  But that **** sound won't go away.  Did a repair lost all my sounds again.  Just did another repair and that sound came back.
    I went into sounds and turned them off and the sound went away...I listened to every sound there before I turned it off and none of them sounded like the sound I was getting.  At least I can still hear my music through external speakers.  I'm totally confused.  Hopefully you'll have more for me?
