Use SMB or FTP when sharing?

All of a sudden, I am not able to share a file on my PC (WinXP) with my iMac G5. When I went into Preferences/Sharing/Options, I see that both the FTP and SMB are checked for sharing files and folders. When I look at the IP addresses from the Mac (Command K), I note that they start with SMB://192.xxx.x.xxx.
Is it correct to have both the FTP and SMB checked or a particular one?
Thanks

FTP and SMB are different file sharing services, so it's perfectly appropriate to have both turned on, though if you don't use or plan to use FTP, I'd suggest turning it off for security reasons. Having FTP turned on should not be affecting connection via SMB, though.

  • Using destination hot corners when sharing a screen

I am a heavy user of hot corners.  I would like to use the hot corners on a desination Mac mini while view the screen (via screen sharing) on an iMac.  The screen sharing session is not full screen, and the corners are defined on the screen.
I have searched and there doesn't seem to be an easy answer (yet).   Any assistance would be appreciated.

The destinatation, Mac Mini, is: 10.7.5.
The source, the iMac where I am accessing the Mac Mini via Screen Sharing: 10.8.5.

  • Error to Connect Oracle Files from Mac Os10  using smb protocol .

I connect my MacOs10 to oracle Workspaces using smb protocol but when I try to copy a file into a folder the system show me "error -36".
From the finder I type "apple -k" and then I write "smb://nomeserver". The system show me "User name" and "Password" and after the authentication I see "MyHome" resource on my desktop.
I navigate into MyWorkspaces folders and than I copy a file from a local directory. After a few second the system show me "error -36" and the file is not transferred from local to server.
    Any idea?
    Thanks

In OCS10g SMB protocol not supported, use FTP or WebDav.

  • AD is NOT working only when using SMB

We have all our user account defined in Active Directory. Our Xserve (10.4.9) is bound to the AD using the forest and domain name. (With "Creat mobile account" enabled)
All Mac end-users can mount AFP shares and using Jabber iChat with their AD account name and password.
But when Windows user tried to mount the shared points with their AD account, they always got message saying "User name or password is not correct", but we know they are using the right name and password. The only way Windows users (or Mac users using SMB://server_name) can access SMB shares are the local users. NO AD users can use SMB.
The same AD users can use AFP just fine.
Anyone might have any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

  • Error when opening files using SMB server

I’m trying to download files using a Windows SMB server, but it does not work properly. I'm using a VPN connection to access the server. I already added smb protocol in my system preferences (using 'more internet'), but when I’m trying to open a file, the following error message (code 36) appears:
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some of the data in smb://........ could not be read or written.
The Console gives the following error message:
    mount_smbfs: can't get server address `……:
    Unknown host
mount_smbfs: can't get server address: syserr = Network is down
Does anyone know how to solve thed error? Thanx in advance!

This has been bugging me. Typically, the FileOpenClient error would include the name of the "client" referenced by the FileOpenClient parameter in the ditafm.ini file (I don't think it really does anything, but that's not the point). In this case it's not indicating the name of the client. After some testing it looks like FM10 (probably FM9 as well) prints this error along with the message about being unable to open a file. I have a feeling that it's just a bogus error message. However, the message about being unable to open the file is real.
Note that there is a difference between being unable to "open" of "locate" a file .. you'll see different messages in each condition. This (and the message from M_Boyd) are "open" errors. Off hand I don't know why. Try manually opening the file specified and see if you get any errors. I've not been able to replicate the "open" error (just a "locate" error) even when I corrupt the target file so it is invalid XML. When I do this, the xref does not properly resolve, and it *does* add significant time to the time it takes to open the referencing file .. but I'm not getting any errors written to the console for this .. strange.
Also note that the error says "Unable to resolve link" .. this means a "link" element is the referencing element, as opposed to an "xref". If it was an xref it would say "Unable to resolve xref".
Bottom line .. don't worry about the FileOpenClient error .. I think it's just bogus. But there is some reason that FM isn't able to open your referenced files. I'd strip out all of the references and start over with just one .. make sure it works before adding more. The simpler you can keep the directory structure the better.

When you enable Photo Stream on your devices, only new photos you take or import to those devices will be automatically added to your Photo Stream. Existing photos won't.

  • Problems Transferring Files Larger Than 1GB Using SMB

    Hi All,
I noticed that in 10.8.2, when I try to copy large files particularly greater than 1GB from my PC to my Mac using SMB (the PC is the one making the operation of copy & paste) , it fails to continue with the error message "There is a problem accessing \\COMPUTERNAME\SHARENAME. Make sure you are connected to the network and try again. However, when my Mac is the one doing the copy and paste operation, it continues without any problem. Any ideas why they behave as such?

    hi all,
i just want to share that i upgraded some of my PCs to Windows8, and to my surprise, this problem is all gone and the copying is much faster! my other PCs that were left behind Windows7 still experiences the same problem. now i am confused if this is Apple's bad implementation of smb or it's a conflict between OS X and Windows7. can someone duplicate this problem between pre-Windows7 versions so that we can have comparisons. thanks and cheers to everyone!
That's really interesting, because all of my machines are running Windows 8 Pro 64-bit and they all have this issue of not being able to copy large/sustained transfers... I don't have any machines running 7 to check if my issue is isolated to just 8 or not. Can you say what flavor of 8 you're running?
I eventually just went to using SMBup which... 1. gave me better speeds then when I was using the built-in OS X Windows Sharing, and 2. Has been 100% reliable as far as transfers go... I can copy 10GB files with ease. The only issue with SMBup is the fact that Windows machines don't show up in the Finder like when you're using the built-in method.

  • Why are my permissions greyed out when sharing a fat32 drive?

I want to share a Fat32 drive between two macs on my network but the read/write permissions are greyed out. I can't reformat to ex-fat or the mac format HFS because I also want to use this drive in my TV and that only accepts Fat32 drives.
Is there a way that I can work around this to share a Fat32 drive on my mac network?
...I've also tried accessing the drive using SMB as I've read about this as a suggested workaround but get an error message when it tries to mount the drive (I'm not sharing mac to windows, just mac to mac).

any luck on this Bevymay? I have the same issue.

  • SMB -36 ioErr when opening files

After installing Snow Leopard and connecting using SMB to my network harddive, I am unable to open any of the files on the drive. I can log into the drive fine and see all the files but they are bigger than normal; eg. a 126kb file shows up as 132kb and a 6.91gb file shows up as 7.3gb. When attempting to open any file, Snow Leopard gives me the error: Error -36. Unable to open file. I checked using Windows and all files can be opened without any problems. The harddrive is 1Tb and formatted as FAT32. Any advice?

    to recap:
I cannot copy from Mac SL to an OpenSolaris ZFS shared via smb. Get the -36 error.
I can delete files via Finder
I can create new folders via Finder
    I can copy via Terminal
Perms etc look good on the file copied via Terminal from Mac and doing an ls -V on the Solaris box. I can read and write according to perms.
That file, when viewed in Finder cannot be opened, but can be played in the "Get Info" preview box
I can drag the greyed out file into iTunes
I can change metadata on that file via iTunes (i.e. write to the file)
I can play it through iTunes and AppleTV
I can write a file via TextEdit, for example, and it all looks good.
I can mount, read, copy, play from my MacBook on 10.5.8.
The time on my Solaris box had slipped to more than 5 mins from the time on my Mac, so I updated that. Can cause issues apparently.
I've turned the firewall off. No change.
Only error I can see in the Mac logs that might be related:
smb_maperr32: no direct map for 32 bit server error (0xc00000e5)
    I found this:
    http://spiralbound.net/2005/09/22/macintosh-finder-copy-to-samba-share-problem
Says that he set posix locking = no on his smb share and it was all good.
    Will give that a go.

  • Is is possible to use creative cloud as a shared volume for collaboration between incopy & indesign?

I'm a designer student and as a designer, I constantly have to make decks for presentations.  I typically work in a group of six and because I'm confident with graphic design, I tend to be the leader of these tasks.  I've found the best workflow for slide creation is Indesign.  Unfortunatly, I'm just an awful writer— so when I heard about Incopy's collabrative features(saw the post from indesign's facebook page) I saw oppertunity and got very excited.  My teamates and I typically all have subscriptions to adobe cc because of this, I was wondering (since I havent used it at all) if the storage given out from adobe cc was able to be that shared volume that is required for the live link between incopy stories and indesign layouts.
    Therefore,
Is is possible to use creative cloud as a shared volume for collaboration between Incopy & Indesign?
If this needs any further clarification I'll gladly write a more detailed question — lastly, if this is not possible might you suggest an alternative?  Please assume that we go to school together but we work offsite also.

You will not be able to use the Files page at https://creative.adobe.com/files for collaboration in this way. But you can share individual files in this way.
When folder sharing is available this will be possible.

I fixed the problem.. but it was very, very strange. I had a very long section for credits and set the line spacing to 1.0.. for some reason this caused it. I removed it, and it worked fine. I put it back, and I couldn't preview or play the video.
I don't know why that could cause that big of a problem, but it did..

    Hi
Consider that I dont have FTP installed on my computer. According to this blog
    /people/shabarish.vijayakumar/blog/2006/08/01/along-came-a-file-adapter-mr-ftp-and-rest-of-the-gang
    I have configured.
In sender comm channel I have given Ipaddress of computer 1 (which has a file to be picked)
In Receiver Comm channel I have given IP address of computer 3 (in which file to be posted)
and computer 2 is the XI server
    Computer 1 has FTP installed
    1. XI server should have FTP installed or not ? IF yes is it FTP client  or FTP server   or Guild FTP (according to the blog is enough)
    2. Computer 3 should have FTP installed or not ?
Please help me I am really confused.
    Thanks
