Use SSD samsung evo as storage -- Probook 4540s

hi everyone,
I have a SSD kingmax 120Gb, I put it in Caddy bay and install windows 8.1 x64 on it(BIOS in UEFI and ACHI).
-->My system works properly.
Then I buy a SSD samsung evo 250Gb, I put it in HDD position in my laptop, I wish I can use it as my storage device. But my laptop cannot start when pressing power button. It stops at HP screen.
After that I remove SSD kingmax, install Windows on SSD samsung--> and it works properly. But when I put SSD king max into Caddy bay again set boot order ODD first, but I doesn't work.
Please help me to solve it. My wish is that SSD samsung is my storage and SSD kingmax (on Caddy bay) is boot devíce.

I have an X220 with W8 Pro and Samsung 840 Pro. Getting 528 read and 474 sequential write.   Did you install the Samsung Magician software and update the firmware on the SSD?
Samsung Magician will also provide a speedtest you can check against crystal disk mark.
Lots of sites for optimizing SSD settings but unless it is a firmware issue I don't know why you would get such slower speeds.

W510 ssd samsung evo

Hi,
I have a thinkpad W510. It came with an original 500 gb hitachi drive. I believe it is a 2.5 inch 9.5 mm drive. Can I put in a samsung ssd evo with 2.5 inch 7mm drive? Do I need new rubber railings? The reason im asking is it appears the original drive is in an adaptor. Can i take the metal adaptor off the old drive and put it on the new and reuse the railings? Or you cant use the old adaptor on a 7mm drive. Also in the hmm it mentions a storage converter part number
42W7888 do i need this?
To clone the drive do i just buy an external hdd enclosure and use acronis or something similiar?

I have several 7mm drives in 9mm bays using the 9mm caddy and rubber rails and they work all fine. See the example pics from my X201:

T500 SSD Samsung Evo 840

Hi,
I have had a T500 laptop for about 4.5 years now and am looking to replace my HDD. I am concerned that it is nearing the end of its lifespan. I have been looking at replacing it with a SSD - in particular a Samsung 840 EVO (MZ-7TE250BW). I am aware that I will not achieve SATA III speeds (Seems to be SATA I or possibly II - even so it will still be an improvement from my HDD).
According to what I found, the T500 has a 2.5" 9.5mm drive bay. However, the 840 EVO is 2.5" 7.0mm. So my question is this - can the SSD be plopped in to replace the HDD, or is there some adapter kit that is needed? Would the drive need a different casing / rails? Obviously 7.0mm would fit, but I don't know if the screws / connectors would line up and if something would be needed to fill in the extra space to make the drive more secure. There is a 840 EVO package that comes with a "notebook kit" but I don't know if that would work in my T500.

I just successfully installed a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB into my old T500 Vista laptop. The 850 is the successor to the 840 and was cheaper.
I'm posting this because the Data Migration package that comes with the SSD did not work for reasons that I don't understand. I was left with a "bootmgr missing" message. I will explain the work around.
Hardware wise it was a piece of cake. Look online and you can find a video of how to replace a hdd in the t500. It is simple to remove the hdd case from its slot and remove the case from the hdd with a tiny phillips screwdriver. 2.5 inch 850 EVO fits perfectly in the hdd case re-using the rubber side rails on the hdd case. Don't miss that the flexible plastic tab is folded back into the slot atop the hdd and will have to be folded out with the screwdriver.
Since the Data Migration did not work, I found reference to the Acronis Backup software working well. I just happened to have the 2012 version installed on the laptop for backup purposes!
In summary, here is what you need. Samsung SSD, external HDD to USB cable, Acronis pack with Rescue Disk.
The cable can be loose or attached to an external HDD/SSD case. The Acronis Rescue Disk you create using the Acronis package. Acronis has detailed cloning instructions on their website.
In summary, after creating the Rescue Disk (CD/DVD), power down, remove the hdd and attach it to the external cable and plug in to USB; install the SSD (blank or with trash on it; it will be scrubbed) in the laptop hdd slot, boot up with the Acronis Bootable Rescue Disk, and use the Clone Disk feature of Acronis to clone the old drive into the SSD already installed in the laptop. After cloning, remove the Rescue Disk and unplug the USB cable. Boot up normally and hold your breathe! Mine booted just fine!

PROBOOK and SAMSUNG SSD 850 EVO DISK problems

I have connected HP ProBook 470 G2 i7 processor with SAMSUNG SSD 850 EVO 500 GB via SATA3 to USB3 adapter (STLAB). SSD disk is not detected by windows 7 (win explorer) neither by samsung magition SW.
Is it possible to solve this.

Does the drive show in Disk Management?
Does it show as 'offline'? This sometimes happens with 'external' drives.
If it is 'offline' just right click 'offline' and chose 'online' from the menu.

Advice on SSD migration a 9,2: Crucial BX 100 vs Samsung EVO

Hi, The Samsung EVO 500 GB on paper looks better than the Crucial BX 100 500 GB in terms of SSD drives. They're at the same price point. I was wondering if anyone could weigh in on which drive would be better for migration on a 9,2 (late model 2012).
I'm on 10.8.5 and my MBP has been running hot lately. I plan on cleaning the fan but ever since I've had it I've had RAM issues in which running multiple apps and/or having more than one external drive attached sucked the life out of the machine I upgraded to 8GB ram when I first go it, but I hear that 16 GB isn't worth the upgrade so I thought I'd move to an SSD. Now I'm using both Memory Cleaner and SMC just to keep the latest version (except for the OS) running smoothly.
This sort of started out of the blue- I noticed that FF was a drawing too much RAM and I switched to Chrome which I know Chrome is a also huge Ram suck but onetab is saviour in keeping a browser open. Along with Chrome, I typically have Excel and TextEdit, and drop down to roughly 1GB of RAM and can't keep an additional program open (Photoshop/Word/VLC) without constantly having to clean the RAM using memory cleaner and turning the fans way up using SMC.
Sorry, I'm not updating to Yosemite. I never upgrade to the 1st of anything. In didn't upgrade to Mavericks because that sounded to buggy to me- and that isn't even available anymore.
Advice and thoughts would be much appreciated.
Also, any advice on the migration when I actually do it? Clone Copy, etc. . .

I want to join in the converstation here, cause I also have a MacPro [5,1] 3.2 Quad-Core with 12GB ram and was hoping to talk to people with the same system about internal SSD drives.
I have 3 different 1TB SATA drives already installed...
1 Mavericks [boot/system]
1 Snow Leopard [boot/system]
1 [strictly storage]
And I was thinking of intalling a SSD [maybe about 128 or 200GB?] in the 4th bay so I can then get a 3rd [boot/system] that will obviously run a bit faster than the other drives.
I'm just curious to know not only about the drives, but the phsycial installation of the drive. Do the drives that area available for purchase online, do they come with the drive alone? And do they fit in the hard drive carrier that is in the MacPro? Or is there an additional kit that is needed when puttin the drive in?
I'm mostly going to be running pro audio stuff like Logic, Ableton, Reason, Native instruments stuff, etc. as well as Autodesk Maya and other graphics and video stuff., so any suggestions would be nice.

Normally we replace the HDD with SSD, you can use the ODD but you need more hardware for it. Replacing HDD with a SDD is very simple interms of hardware but recover software may take a bit longer. The following shows how in general which can apply to many other machines.

Block level backup engine Samsung SSD 840 EVO partition labeled "data"

Replaced the hard drive in my Dell 1545 laptop with a Samsung SSD 840 EVO.
Everything beautiful.
Am running Windows 8.1 - again everything beautiful.
Thought I would run "System Image Backup" (off the File History page).
failed - Microsoft error code 0x80780119
because Samsung Migration tool created a first partition labeled "data"
(don't know whose data this might be suspect it has nothing to do with the OS but is required for the SSD, perhaps for MBR boot purposed.)
This "data" partition is very small and 99% full: no room for the VSS backup requires.
Bypassed that problem with:
PS C:\> wbAdmin start backup -backupTarget:H: -include:C:\
which runs perfectly, except for the warning,
" Note: the list of volumes included for backup does not include all the volumes that contain operating system components. This backup cannot be used to perform a system recovery. However. you can recover other items if the destination media type Supports
it."

Is the Samsung 850 EVO not compatible with this MacBook Pro? Has anyone installed it and found it to work fine for a few months?

I purchased this drive and installed it in my MacBookPro about a week ago.
Since then I have repeatedly run system-reported data corruptions on the SSD.
One obvious sign of the corruption is that on powering-on the laptop, it will stall for a long time (5 to 30 minutes! - normally it would boot up in about 30 seconds) after the grey/black Apple-logo and status bar appear on the white-background boot-screen.
Another way I see this is by running Disk Utility's 'verify disk' operation.. Reports serious errors and asks me to reboot in recovery-mode with Cmd-R to repair the partition.
I have erased and re-installed the OS (Yosemite) several times on it already because sometimes the Recovery-Partition's Disk Utility cannot repair the errors - asks me to backup and erase+format. The repair operation does not always succeed *.
This is happening often and without any pattern **.
Several times on the latest install, I have booted up in single-user mode and run fsck -fy: till yesterday, this was still occasionally finding and successfully repairing issues (after which I run fsck a couple more times to confirm).
Seems to be running fine today.
* I am re-installing off of a TimeMachine backup.
But I don't think that is causing the trouble: verify-disk on the original backup reports no errors, and even the computer itself passes "verify"/"fsck -fy" several times over before failing in the same way again after an hour or 2 of actual use.
** On one occasion, after an OS update (latest OS X security patches) succeeded and reboot completed, verify-disk again asked for the Cmd-R recovery-mode repair - which failed to repair the errors.
Also, if I as much as launch the Yosemite installer while booted up, then even after quitting (without proceeding beyond the initial screen), the SSD fails completely again requiring to be erased. Happened twice with installers involved, but corruptions even without installers did happen.

I loaded the Samsung 850 into my 2012 i5 Macbook Pro and it's been working well since I installed a few days ago. The only concern I have is that on boot up I get a white screen for around 30 seconds before it begins the startup with the apple and progress bar. That's odd, because when I installed an SSD on my older 2009 Macbook a few years ago that laptop booted up almost instantaneously when I pushed the power button.
I loaded the system on the SSD by cloning, rather than using Time Machine and it worked without a hitch. Used Carbon Copy Cloner in trial mode after formatting the SSD with Disk Utilities. Not sure if your problem may stem from using Time Machine. The cloning apps will usually adjust the data on the new drive based on available space, so if your SSB is a different size than the original HDD, it would automatically correct. Not sure about TIme Machine.
I'll keep researching about the startup lag when I turn on my Macbook Pro with the 850. Seems it should boot up right away with the SSD, but maybe it's because the 850 uses the new vertical stacking configuration. That's the only thing I can think of that's different from the last SSD I installed in my old Macbook.

Bootcamp will not install on my late 2012 mini Samsung EVO 840 1tb SSD

I recently replaced my 256gb OWC SSD in my late 2012 Mac Mini with a Samsung EVO 840 1tb.
I did the following
1) Using 10.9 recovery i initialized and created a single clean partition on the 1Tb SSD
2) I installed a clean copy of 10.9
3) Using migration assistant i transferred apps and documents from my previous SSD via a USB 3.0 adapter to the new SSD
4) Using Bootcamp Assistant 5 I created an ISO version of a clean copy of Windows 7 Home Premium and downloaded the Apple updated Boot Camp drivers to the same 16gb Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0 thumb drive
5) Using Bootcamp Assistant created a 199gb Bootcamp partition on the new Samsung SSD which appeared to go to completion
6) Mini restarted from the Bootcamp USB drive and Windows started successfully
7) I chose Windows 7 Home Premium install
8) I got the "which partition do you want to use to install Windows" screen, chose the Bootcamp partition, using the advanced option I chose format which appeared to complete, hit NEXT and then got an error that windows could not install because it could not find the NTFS partition, and then i was stuck.
When I rebooted I first got the Unable to find a bootable disk, hit any key error. I then physically shut down the computer, held down the alt key chose the Mac partition and the computer successfully booted. I could see the Bootcamp partition and according to Disk Utilities, the partition was formatted as NTFS.
The only connections to the Mini were a 30" Apple Cinema via a Apple Mini display connector, the keyboard and mouse via USB, and the USB Bootcamp Created 16gb Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0 thumb drive. I also have an internal Apple 1 tb hard drive with no applications installed. In the apps installed on the Samsung does include Parallels 9.
What have i done wrong or missed? IF nothing it appears that the Bootcamp assistant supplied with 10.9 may have an issue with my Hardware setup including the Samsung EVO840 1tb drive.

There are known SATA speed issues with Macs and EVO 1TB. Please check in System Profiler -> SATA for SATA status of the EVO. It seems to work on OSX side, but not Bootcamp/Windows.
Please check for any firmware updates for the EVO on the Samsung website.

[HELP] Macbook Pro won't boot Samsung Evo SSD internally

I recently bought a 512 Gb Samsung Evo SSD for my 2011 Macbook Pro. After cloning the harddrive using superduper! I installed the harddrive internally and booted it up. I first received an error saying "Unapproved Caller SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple Software". Confused, I hit OK and it proceeded to showing the Apple bootup screen with the spiral underneath. I decided to restart the machine and this time I did not receive the error, however it just got stuck at the apple boot up screen with the spiral spinning for days. I brought it to Tigerdirect and they tried everything they could (apparently) and had no luck with cloning, fresh install, reinstalling OS, and so on. They told me the Boot Rom only (for some reason) recognizes the original seagate HDD and my boot rom is messed up. Freaking out, I tried placing the SSD in the computer and connect the original HDD via USB 3.0. I booted the HDD by holding down option during bootup then proceeded to system preferences and tried to changed the start up disk to the SSD. However, I received an error saying Bless tool was unable to set boot disk. I am now at a loss, and worried my pricey SSD will become dead weight. Please help

Samsung SSD 840 EVO not detected in MacBook Pro 2012.

In January I had a problem with my computer where it would overheat, the battery would die quickly, and the overall computer speed was slower than a turtle for even the most basic functions. I brought my computer to a MacMan retailer and they fixed the issue. I then got my MBP back and it worked fine for about a month. It then repeated the same symptoms it had before I got it fixed. I talked to my roommate and did some research and ended up purchasing the Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250gb to replace my Hard Drive.
I transferred all my data to the new SSD and then installed the SSD to the internal bay where the hard drive sits without any problems. After the SSD was in place I booted up the computer and I got a "flashing folder with question mark." The SSD was not internally recognized by my computer. I then tried to put my Hard Drive back in to see if it would be recognized and it was not. However, both the SSD and Hard Drive are externally recognized via USB enclosure. I have been working on this for a couple days and am getting frustrated.
I have tried a number of fixes I thought would surely work. I reformatted the SSD to the appropriate Mac format that every forum and website recommend: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and that does not work. I have reinstalled OS X Yosemite, I have tried updating the SSD Firmware through USB. Nothing has worked yet. I have tried using Apple's internet recovery system and neither drive is recognized when inside the computer. My best assumption but least favorable is the Cable within the MacBook Pro that connects to the Hard Drive/SSD is faulty. I fear that it may be faulty since now neither the SSD or Hard Drive is detected when they are installed in the MacBook Pro, only when external.
Can anyone please help me figure out what could be wrong? If you need more information just ask and I will do my best to answer them to your satisfaction. Anyone input, conclusion, or direction would be greatly appreciated!

You have already defined the probable cause, the internal SATA cable. For verification, take the MBP to an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation. It is not an expensive repair, even if done by Apple.

Some level 6 and 7 reps are suggesting purchasing cloneing software to do the job. Please advise the best route for me. I also want to upgrade my memory at the same time. Much thanks.

Since you aren't upgrading your OS and you're not starting over with a new computer, your old HD is already fully compatible with what you want on your new SSD. So, with your HD installed in your external USB enclosure, boot from it (hold down the option key after the chime and pick the external drive), then clone the external onto the SSD after you partition the SSD to GUID Partition Table (click the Options..Button), one partition. Carbon Copy Cloner does the job for making a bootable clone; other software, such as Superduper does too. Assuming the SSD is big enough to receive the contents of the HD with room to spare, you're done.
Obviously it's also possible to do a fresh install of the OS you're already running and then use Setup Assistant to migrate your settings and files to the SSD. I've found, however, that some settings, such as Network configurations, can get lost that way, as can authorizations for software you've had to buy and register.

Each drive mounts as a separate volume. There is no convenient way to make them look like one contiguous volume.*
Franky, with an hdd and a ssd I would recommend you put your home dir on the hdd and leave the ssd for the OS and your key applications. It's relatively easy to do and I think better than moving only portions of your stuff.

Half the speed on Samsung EVO 850 SSD

I just installed a Samsung EVO 850 500GB SSD in my mid-2010 iMac with 27" monitor and 2.93GHz i7 processor. According to Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, I am only getting 255MB/s read and write speeds when the SSD is advertised as 2x this fast. Why am I only getting half the R/W speeds. Running the latest version of Yosemite.

I may have just discovered my own answer. My 2010 iMac I believe has a SATA II controller which operates at 3Gb/sec unlike SATA III which does 6Gb/sec. Is that the answer?
