Use System Proxy Settings - when this is selected in FF v3.6.6, does it adhere to the same local IE proxy setting? We use a pac file configured in "Use automatic configuration script."

Does anyone know what Firefox looks at locally on the PC when the "Use System Proxy Settings" setting is selected? It appears to be the default setting, recently changed from "No Proxy" of versions past...
Our company uses a pac file specified in IE under "Use automatic configuration script" - with this new default, does it adhere to the same setting in:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]

I may be wrong but I think that the "Use System Proxy Settings" makes sense only on Linux and generally speaking "other OSes". As far as I know there is no generic proxy settings in Windows operating system.
The one I know is in the registry part of Internet Explorer.
So in my understanding in Windows, Use System Proxy Settings = No Proxy

The first thing you should do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. If you don't have the media, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able toauthorize it under your ID. In that case, contact iTunes Support.

her contacts are connected directly with the Google Server so as long as they are saved to her Gmail account she should be 100% fine.. the only contacts she may lose are the ones that she added directly onto the phone and did not sync to her Gmail account.. so you should just double check with her on that

  • My iBook crashed.  I tried to install the original factory OS 10.1.4, but it wouldn't let me select the hard drive because it was read-only.  I was using classic OS 9 when it crashed.  I tried to install OS 9, but it's the same problem.  HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really need my OS 9 because I a lot of software that use it.

Hi Ronda!  Thank you for trying to help me.  I don't think I know the hard drive capacity, but it wasn't much for the G3.  (I don't know what capacity means).
The space available on it:  I didn't have anything on it except what was factory default applications and they were empty.  For example, no movies, no songs, no photos, and no documents.
I'm not sure; I was in OS X 10.1.4 when I had to go into settings and choose classic OS 9, but I think I had to reboot in order to use OS 9.
Yes, I held down the C key during start-up.  Is there anyway to fix the hard drive?  Do I still have a hard drive?  Who would fix my old iBook?  It was fine before it crashed.  I had a DVD in the DVD player that taught math.  I didn't download anything.

  • Where can I read the proxy settings Firefox chose, when configured to use "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network"?

I would like to set my system network proxy settings to those, Firefox chose. Firefox is configured to use "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network" and this works fine. How can I read out the settings Firefox chose, so I can adapt these system?

    Hello Richard,
Download MozBackup and make a backup of your bookmarks and passwords. Uninstall firefox and remove ALL folders with the name "Firefox".
Install Firefox and restore your bookmarks and passwords. Now you should have a fresh install so you have to make all settings again.

  • I could do this before installing Maverick but cannot do it now.It is nice and convenient how Mac OS X Mail displays messages semi-automatically when you just select them. But wouldn't a bigger view of the mailbox be useful sometimes? Yes, and it's easier

It is nice and convenient how Mac OS X Mail displays messages semi-automatically when you just select them. But wouldn't a bigger view of the mailbox be useful sometimes?
Yes, and it's easier to get than you maybe think.
Hide the Preview Pane and Delete Mail Without Opening It in Mac OS X Mail
To hide the message preview pane in Mac OS X Mail:
Double-click the bar that separates the message pane from the mailbox pane.
    Now, to delete any email:
Highlight the message or messages you want to delete.Hold down the Command key while selecting with the mouse to highlight multiple emails and Shift to highlight a range.
    Press Del.
To get the preview pane back, double-click the same bar again.
Cannot do this now since installing Maverick

I'm using Photoshop CC 2014, when I open a picture and movie it to a different Photoshop page, the picture turns black and white. How do I fix this problem?

Nobody can tell you anything without proper system info or other technical details since even your terminology is confusing. there are no "pages" in Photoshop. What you describe in vague terms could be anything from your target document having a different color mode/ color profile to some hardware acceleration issue, but we really can't make any sense of it based on your information.

I'd recommend staring over, Pondini has created an excellent guide on how to use Setup Assistant. I'd recommend begin reading Pondini Setup Assistant tips where he talks about "Second Chance." Assuming your Time Machine backup is sound the restore  should be very smooth.

We have a 10 person office - all either use Acrobat XI or Reader XI.  One person is on Windows 7.  The rest are on Windows 8 (not 8.1).  I say this because I thought it was a Windows 8 issue, but having the same problems on the Windows 7 machine. We are all having problems opening pdf's sent to us from other firms. This has increased in frequency over the past two months. We've checked with the various firms, and their other clients are not having problems. Some pdfs open but with a lot of missing content and strange formatting, others won't open at all.  There are different error messaged depending upon the doc.  Some are regarding the fonts, for example "can't extract the embedded font...."  Others are "insufficient data" errors.  There are more, but for purposes of keeping this short, I won't include them.  Another unrelated issue is that we are having trouble printing excel files to pdf.  The files end up with bad formatting.  I've worked with adobe "chat" support, our IT consultants with no resolution.  I also haven't found any similar "known issue" online  Would very much appreciate any assistance.  Thank you

The font embedding can be a problem if not done and you are trying to view the PDF and do not have the font on your machine. Acrobat will often try to find a replacement, but it is not always a good choice. Sometimes the "Use Local Fonts" button can be changed in state to resolve some of the viewing issues.
If you are trying to copy or export info, then it is important that you have the fonts on your system. Otherwise, the message you are getting about embedded fonts would not be showing up.
As for Excel formatting, be sure that the Adobe PDF printer is selected in the printer screen before you look for the paging and formatting of the file. In most OFFICE programs, if you change the printer the application will reflow the document to best match the printer (called "using printer metrics"). So check before you create the PDF that the layout is correct.

  • I used to be able to keep my finger on a key to select an accent in mountain lion but I cannot do the same thing in Maverick.  Any suggestions?

I used to be able to keep my finger on a key to select an accent in mountain lion but I cannot do the same thing in Mavericks.  Any suggestions?

I found the following info at file:///Users/gordondoyle/Desktop/Mac%20OS%20X%20Tips.webarchive
Here’s yet another iPhone feature that has cropped up on the Mac in Lion. While typing, simply pressing and holding on a key will bring up a popup showing all the possible diacritics (accents, cedillas, etc.) that can be added to the letter. You can then choose from the possibilities by pressing the corresponding number on your keyboard, or by clicking the one you want.
This seems to be a fairly quick way typing accents, and is much easier to use than the old method which involved remembering a number of Option key combinations. It does have one drawback however — it stops you from pressing and holding to write a long line of repeated letters, like thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis.
If you don’t regularly type accents, then losing the repeated character functionality might not be worth it for you. In this case, you can disable this new feature using a Terminal command. Open up Terminal (located in Applications/Utilities), paste the following line and press Return.
defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool NO
You will need to restart each application for the changes to take effect. Simply repeat the command with YES at the end to reverse.
and it seems to be related to your suggestion that I follow the threads related to the link you provided except that the above info is the reverse of what I think that I need to do.  I will try what is shown in the threads however and see what happens - most appreciatively!

When my Ipod touch is in autolock I can only restart the device holding the sleep/wake button and home button at the same time for 10 seconds.  While in auto-lock it is using battery power and will do so until the battery is drained.  Whats wrong?

    - Try a reset. Nothing is lost:
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
    - Connect the iPod to your computer and try to restore via iTunes. Try placing in Recovery mode if necessary to restore.
    - If you can't turn the iPod completely off, let the batter fully drain. After charging for at lerast anhour try again
    - If still not successful time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
