Use the original iPhone as a iPod Touch

I would like tlo use my original iPhone as a iPod Touch but I am unable to activate or unblock the SIM card. I cannot use my iPhone 4 SIM car on the original as it is a different size.
What now?

I did borrow the SIM card from a friends old 3G he is using an an iPod Touch. It worked.
Even more interesting is that when I placed the "problem" SIM card in the 3G it merely indicated the SIM was locked but otherwise works as intended - an iPhone without cellular service - an iPod Touch.
No idea why the 1st gen iPhone will not work with its own SIM but its SIM works in a 3G.

I think you're set if he cancels his service providing he had the pay-as-you-go plan. No voice or EDGE, but I'm 95% sure everything else will work, including WiFi.

i just switched to the iPhone 3Gs...as for my original iPhone, i know i can still use it as an iPod. and i can still use safari and maps but with WiFi, correct?...if so, can i use the Appstore icon and iTunes icon on the phone? and how would that work in regards to adding it to iTunes on my computer?
also, if i want to give my original iPhone to someone else, what do i have to do? remove the sim card? how would i reset the original phone to its original setting, wiping it clean of anything i added on to it(phone numbers, music, movies, apps)?

Any app you can use over Wi-Fi will work just the same. iTunes will happily sync with multiple devices. As long as you are using the same iTunes Store account on computer, iPhone and de-activated iPhone, purchases should freely move around among the three.

To clear out the info, you can either Restore as New via iTunes, or on the phone use Settings>General>Reset which has several options.

You can only uncheck the cell phone number. The only way to delete it is to use for FaceTime and Messages an Apple ID not associated with the iPhone.

For location the iPod uses the location of nearby routers that are in Apple's database of routers and their location. Thus it appears that Apple's database is incorrect. You do not have to be connected to the router, just within range.
Apple periodically updates their database based on information they obtain from iPhones, The iPhone has to have turned on the option to send info to Apple. no one has found another way to get the location of a router added/corrected.
You can confirm that by going to well-know place with wifi like Starbucks or McDonalds

iTunes will recognize each device as unique. It will continue to see the old iPhone as an iPhone but that's fine. You can sync multiple iPhones or iPods or iPads (or any combination of the above) to one iTunes Library.

Getting in touch with the original owner of my Ipod touch 5g

So few days ago I purchased an Ipod Touch 5g from a local (Helsinki) police auction.
At first everything was fine, but I ran in to problems when I decided to restore it, to get rid of all the data by the previous owner.
Now the Ipod is asking for the Apple ID and password of the previous owner in order to activate the device.
Is there any way of contacting the original owner? Maby by using the serial number?
Do I need to get a court order?

Yes, the only way would be to get a court order and present it to Apple. I would say you would spend more for the lawyer that the iPod is worth. Likely the iPod was stolen or lost.If that case it would back to the original owner.

location services are on, find my iPod is on, signed into iColud, not sure what else to do???

I've got an old 8GB 2G iphone (the first model) bought in the UK. Roaming's turned on, and I'm currently using it as a phone in India with a UK number.
However, now I've got an Indian simcard (Airtel) and I want to use it with my iphone. Will this work? And, as the phone doesn't have a UK sim in (I accessed the number online somehow, as per the instructions at the time), will I be able to get all my texts etc back when I want to switch back to the UK number?

No, unless your phone was officially unlocked by the UK carrier it was originally locked to, and from your post stating you're roaming, it would appear your phone is not unlocked. The 2G iphone was only sold officially unlocked in France when it was introduced.
