Use the "Rectangular Marquee Tool" with my mouse

Hey.
When I use the "Rectangular Marquee Tool" with my mouse, it is often difficult to do it accurately.
Is there an easier way to do it than with the mouse, -  can I manually enter the size of my selection ..
Any advice is welcome.

  • Lightroom 5.2 freezes when using the spot edit tool with Wacom Intuos 5

    Hi,
I've been using Photoshop 6.x with my Intuos 5 for almost a year and it's been great.  I recently purchased Lightroom 5.2 only to discover that when I use the spot edit tool that it freezes when i use this tool as a brush.  It starts off smooth, but after brushing across my area i want to clone/heal, Lightroom seems to freeze up, and the spot edit tool is unusable.  I can lift my pen off the tablet and a few seconds later Lightroom comes back, but the tablet is basically unusable to me.  The mouse works perfectly fine.
I've read other posts at the end of last year '12, that walks through some regedits and disabling some other tablet functions, but none of those work for me.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks Ed

I solved my own issue.  I saw an article @ http://www.lightroomforums.net/showthread.php?19694-Spot-removal-tool-doesn-t-work-with-Wa com-Intuos-5-in-LR-5 that solved my issue.
    Step 1:
    Walcom Tablet Properties
    Step 2:
Click on Customize and change the default line graph from this:
    Step 3:
    To this
    Step 4:
    Click OK.
After that, my spot edit tool stopped freezing in LR 5.2 while i was using my intuos 5 pen.
Prior to doing this, I also did the procedure listed here:  http://forum.wacom.eu/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=8036
So it's possible that both need to be done in order for the freezing to stop.  I hope this can help others.

  • Rectangular Marquee Tool screen artifacts

Hi - I have a problem with Photoshop CS3 (version 10.0) on a Windows XP Professional computer. When I try to use the rectangular marquee tool to select an area of any image the selection marker leaves dotted artifacts across the parts of the images over which the selection marker has passed.
I don't get the problem if I use any of the marquee tools and the artifacts are not actually written to the image. It's not runining the image but it is causing some problems when trying to be precise with my selections.
Has anyone seen this problem before? I can provide screen shots if that would be of any help.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Mitch

  • Rectangular Marquee Tool (Short cut M)...

I have upgraded to CS5. I cannot access to the Rectangular Marquee Tool with a short cut (M) any longer. M brings up the Eliptical Marquee Tool. Where is the Rectangular Marquee Tool? How can I access?
    Thnx

Check the units you specified for the fixed size. My guess is that it's set to something larger than your image.
Yes, thanks - I was just about to post a response to my own question. They were cm, rather than pixels!

  • How do I specify exact corners with the rectangular selection tool?

Suppose I have an image 2000 pixels wide by 1000 pixels high.  Pixel (0,0) is at the top left as you view the image.  Using the rectangular selection tool, how can I specify an exact area to select?  Say, for example, I want to select the area defined by (0,0), (100,0), (100,100) & (0,100), how would I do this?
I'm using Photoshop CS6 on a Mac with OSX 10.8.3.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Kevin H.

    Mylenium,
33,406 posts!  That's amazing.  Thanks for your technique for specifying an exact selection size.  I tried it out and it works, but is there a way to get the marquee to snap to the guides, as opposed to snapping to pixels.  I can't quite get the marquee to fall exactly where I place the guides, at least not easily.
Here's a method I've come up with since posting my question.  (I guess I should have tried harder to figure this out before asking the question.)
Figure out beforehand where you want the corners of the selection marquee to be.
Activate the rulers: View>Rulers or (Cmd-R.)
    Set rulers to pixels: Photoshop>Preferences>Units&Rulers>Rulers>Pixels
    Select the rectangular selection tool.
In the menu bar for the selection tool choose Style>Fixed Size.  Then in the dimension boxes to the right of the Style button, type in the width and height you want for your selection, e.g. 200 by 100 pixels.
Zoom in on where you want the top left pixel of your selection to be.  Zoom in enough to clearly see the pixel.
With the selection tool active, click-and-release on the pixel you have zoomed in on.
Go back to normal view (Cmd-0) and you should see your entire selection.
This answers my own question, and with your method I now have two ways to do this.
    Thanks,
    Kevin H.

  • Issues with Rectangular Marquee Tool [was: I have a question]

The problem is with the 'rectangular marquee tool'  ... after I select a box, the tool defaults to a marquee that eliminates a portion of the first selected box.  The curser changes to show the '+' curser with an 'x' in the lower right of the cursor ... how do I get rid of this?

It sounds like you have Intersect with selection enabled in the tool options bar instead of the default of New selection.
Though it sounds like you want to add to the prevous selection?
I usually just leave the default of New selection and use the following keyboard shortcuts instead of clicking on different options in the tool options bar.

  • Delete area using Rectangular Marquee Tool

    Hi Sir/Mdm,
I was wondering why I cannot delete an specific area using Rectangular Marquee Tool. I have dragged the Rectangular Marquee Tool to define an area then I hit the "Del" key on the keyboard. I was prompted with the "Fill->Contents> dialog box. Pls advise and thanks in advance.

What do you want to accomplish by "Delete"?
If you have a Background (no layers) then you can only fill it with pixels, as Background cannot have transparency.  You can cause a fill of the background color (as shown in the background swatch in the Tools panel) without a prompt by holding the Control key down when pressing Delete.
The menu gives you access to a number of other useful fill options for a Background, such as Content Aware Fill.
To make a Background into a Layer, which can support transparency, double click the Background in the Layers panel, then confirm the dialog.  Pressing Delete with a part of a non-background layer selected will simply make the selected part transparent.

  • Rectangular Marquee Tool no longer moves

Hi, I have CS2 on Windows XP. For some reason (probably operator error) I can no longer move the Rectangular Marquee Tool in a fixed size mode arond my picture. When I expand it to, for example, 8.5" x 11" it just sits there. I used to be able to expand it, then move it about the photo until I got it where I wanted to do the crop.Does anyone have any ideas what has happened? Also I notice that the crosshairs now have a little bar in the lower right quadrant when I roll my cursor on the photo. Not sure if that is significant. Thanks.

This button enabled? See the screenshot.

  • Rectangular Marquee Tool is a solid line

The Rectangular Marquee Tool in CS4 has started using a solid line instead of the usual dotted line. Is there some setting to revert to the dotted line somewhere, or has my software just gone haywire? Feather is 0px and Style is Normal.

    Hi, using Windows 7.

  • Rectangular Marquee tool broken in CS5.1?

The rectangular marquee tool no longer seems to work when choosing the "Fixed size" option. It seems to just select the entire image area regardless of what values are entered.
This is with version CS5.1 as provided in Creative Suite Design Premium CS5.5.
I've had no problems with this tool in other versions. Can anyone else confirm this behaviour?
    I'm running OSX 10.6.7

  • Wont let me "drag" the rectangle marquee tool or text box tool.

Hey photoshop wizards... I need your help. I have CS4 and when I use the rectangle marquee tool or text tool... it wont let me click and drag an area that I want. It automatically selects a box from the top left corner of my image to where I clicked. It also does not let me move the box with the move tool once its made. Ive reset all the tools and this has not helped. If you know what Im talking about... please help me as it is preventing me from continuing my work. Thank you.

    You don't say what OS.
First thing I do when things get goofy is to trash the prefs. This is covered in the FAQs if you don't know how.

  • Replace words with images, in a table, using the search/replace tool

    Hello everybody
    I have a question:
Is it possible to replace words with images, in a table, using the search/replace tool?
    My case:
I have a table with about 9000 articles on about 400 pages. In this table there are words which I like to replace with Logos.
Example: The word "DM" should be the Logo "DM" (.eps). This word is about 1200 times in this table.
Is it possible to replace it automatically?
Thank you very much for your helb.
    Kind regards Alex

    Hello Mr. Werner
    Thank you for your reply.
Can I ask you which Version of InDesign do you use?
I use CS 5.5 and there I can't find the change field "other" you told me.
Can you see it on the screenshot? (Sorry it is german...)
Thank you very much for your support.
    Kind regards Alex

  • Rectangular marquee tool problem

i used 'rectangular marquee tool to select an area . then i right clicked and select "stroke"  . but i am not satisfied with the result , because its corner was slightly jagged ( when i zoom it ) . feather was set to 0 . can anyone help me plz how to fix this ?

May I suggest stroking on the Inside of your Marquee.
Or switching to using the Rectangle Tool.  The options for stroking a shape offer a great deal of configurability...

  • Moving the Elliptical Marquee Tool

Hi.  Really hoping someone can help me with a problem I'm having with the elliptical marquee tool. Having selected this tool and drawn an oval shape on my image, I know I should be able to move the oval image around the screen, using the keyboard arrows (I think), until it frames the part of the image I want framed.  However, the keyboard arrows are not working for me in order to shift the oval around. When I press the keyboard arrows, I can see my cursor moving through the Photo Effects icons on the right of the Editor window (Elements 6 version). Does anyone know how I can make sure that the keyboard arrows move the oval around or does anyone know any other way of making the oval move around the image?
    Thanks very much

Thanks so much Terri for all your help.  IT NOW WORKS!! HURRAH!!
All I did was re-create the preferences file manually then went back in and tried moving the elliptical marquee tool around using the keyboard arrows and it worked fine.  Unfortunately, the Ctrl+Alt+Shift still does not work but at least I now know the manual way of re-creating the preference file.
In terms of the other questions you asked:
    1.  My shortcut key was already set to none.
    2.  No other keys have been acting up but bear in mind that I have only been using PSE6 for the last 7 weeks as part of my Open University course in the UK so not likely to have encountered much yet.
    3. No other programs are causing any problems that I am aware of although I don't use shortcut keys that often apart from ctrl+V and ctrl+C and a few others.
    4. I don't have a Logitech mouse so this wouldn't be causing any issues.
Thanks again for all your help.

  • Can't find rectangular marquee tool, etc.

I can select the Quick Selection Tool, which then presents the Quick Selection Tool and the Selecton Brush Tool options in the Tool Options bar (bottom left corner).  But nowhere is there an option for rectangular marquee tool or elliptical tool.  Please help.  (This is for Elements 12)

    Hi,
You need to be in Expert Mode to see all the tools - the rectangular and elliptical marquee tools share the same place with the tools options used to select which one you want.
