Use Thunderbolt when connected to cinema display

I have a macbook pro that I connect to a cinema display using thunderbolt. is there any way to then also plug in a thunderbolt device - such as an external harddrive that uses thunderbolt so i can take advantage of the speed? the only thing i can figure out is unplug my laptop from the cinema display so i can plug the external directly into the laptop. but i'd love to keep working on my big monitor! my cinema display is a couple years old and has 3 USB connections in the back, but no thunderbolt one. Thoughts? Thanks!

If the drive has two Thunderbolt ports (many do), use that as the first step in the daisy chain, and cable the monitor to that.
You could also look for a Thunderbolt dock which has a separate video output (often HDMI) to which you would add an adaptor for mini-Displayport for your cinema display.

  • Cannot use boot keystrokes when connected to Cinema Display

    Hi there,
    Just a confidence check:
I've just (at last!) upgraded from a 15" Studio Display ADC, to a 20" Cinema Display ADC (shiny Apple logo, not the graphite one). I am using the standard Apple Pro Keyboard w/black keys that came with my system (profile below).
However, unlike with my 15" Studio Display, I find that I am unable to use any of the boot keystrokes when the keyboard is connected to the back of the Cinema Display:
    C: boot to CD/DVD
T: boot to Target Disk Mode
    Option: boot to Startup Manager
    Command-S: boot to Single-User Mode
    Command-Option-P-R: reset PRAM
    Command-Option-O-F: boot to Open Firmware
The keyboard functions normally once the boot process has completed, and the aforementioned keystrokes do function properly when the keyboard is connected directly to the Power Mac G4.
My initial thought was that the Cinema Display is (presumably) not making USB devices connected to it visible to the ADC/USB bus until sometime during the Mac OS X boot process. However, I'd be surprised that the more capable/expensive/newer Cinema Display would lack functionality present in the older Studio Display.
    Any thoughts on this one?
    Thanks much for looking,

    Hi Keith,
Thanks for the follow-up, but as I'd noted in my original post, I am using a Cinema Display 20" ADC, and not one of the newer displays (the ones in the aluminum enclosure that have a separate power supply, and use a DVI video connection).
I do appreciate the look, of course!
    Best wishes to you,

  • MBP running hot when connected to Cinema Display

I have a 2.33 MBP that I use for work and at home. I also have a 23 inch Cinema display on my desk at home. I have noticed that when I have my MBP connect to the Cinema and the screen on the MBP closed it runs hot and the fans never seem to stop running. I was wondering if anyone has seen the same thing and if so what they have done to resolve the issues. I have had looked at the laptop coolers that go under the laptop and that powers the fans off an USB port, but I really like my desk clean and don't want to add something else to it. Any ideas or suggestions would be great.
    Thanks
    Matt

Try running with the lid open and see it temps drop.

  • I want my MacBook open and its screen dark when connected to Cinema Display

I have a c. 2009 MacBook Pro running OSX10.8.3.  When gaming I want to use my Cinema Display (only) with the MacBook open and its screen dark, in order to facilitate cooling and conserve video card resources.  Is there any easy, safe, reliable, non-technical way to accomplish this?? I have searched the Web and found everything from using a magnet to reprogramming to using Hot Corners.  Using Hot Corners seemed to have good potential but I can't seem to make that work.  I don't want to reprogram my computer whenever I disconnect it from the display.  I am afraid a magnet is not good for the computer.  And I really find it hard to believe that something this basic should be impossible!

    Hi Squiji,
Turn the brightness control all the way down
does that count as an easy, safe, reliable, non-technical way?
    Another nice trick:
    ctrl+shift+eject
instantly darkens your screen to black.
You can return to normal brightness by pressing any key or the trackpad.
very handy when somebody like your boss unexpectedly comes in, and you don't want him to see your 'confidential information' :-)
Don't know how this behaves with a second screen attached though, I assume that goes black too but you can try it.

  • HT5219 Can I use 2 displays when I connect a 1920x1080 display through Thunderbolt to the 27 cinema display when it´s connected to the all new 13" Mac Book Air with thunderbolt?

Can I use 2 displays when I connect a 1920x1080 display through Thunderbolt to the 27 cinema display when it´s connected to the all new 13" Mac Book Air with thunderbolt?

Thank you, I have read that I could daisy chain the HD RAID enclosure on one of the thunderbolt ports with another monitor, if the monitor were at the end of the chain, but I do not know if the other port would still simultaneously support yet another external display at the same time.

  • I have a MacBook Pro 15" 2.53GHz Mid2009.. updated to Lion which is now 10.7.3 build 11D50b... when I close lid and connect to Cinema Display, display will not activate... disconnect display, open lid laptop display will not activate... used to work fine.

I have a MacBook Pro 15" 2.53GHz Mid2009.. updated to Lion which is now 10.7.3 build 11D50b... when I close lid and connect to Cinema Display, display will not activate when keyboard/mouse used... disconnect display, open lid and laptop display will not activate... only way out is hold power button.  Worked fine before Lion update.   Any Advice?

Thanks very much Coander15... I've printed the doc you pointed me towards and I'll run through it.. hoping it helps!
Before I installed Lion I simply hit any key on the keyboard or clicked the mouse...
The keyboard is USB (usually connected to monitor which is connected to laptop... have tried direct connect to laptop as well with no luck) and mouse is USB wireless to one of those tiny plug in's... have tried direct connect USb mouse as well with no luck.
I could plug the closed/sleeping laptop into the monitor and unplug from the monitor without incident all day/night... always worked fine.
Had heard something about this happening w/ Lion but went ahead anyway.
    Oh well...
Hoping your pointer helps... will let you know how it turns out.  Thanks very much for responding!!!

  • Will my Mac automatically stop using wifi when connected to an Ethernet enabled thunderbolt display?

Will my 2012 Macbook pro retina  automatically stop using wifi when connected to an Ethernet enabled thunderbolt display?

    Depends.
If you go in System Preferences / Network, you will see a list of all the network interfaces your current configuration has. If you click on the gear icon next to the minus sign, the drop menu will offer "Set Service Order...". There you can prioritize the order of use: Ethernet above Wi-Fi and wireless will be ignored if Ethernet is available.
Note that the Wi-Fi card will remain active and associated with an access point nonetheless. It just won't be used for communications by the OS and apps.

  • Connecting DVI Cinema Display and VGA Projector from Minidisplay Port

    Hi Everyone!
I'm trying to get my mid 2011 Mac Mini to send a signal from my MiniDisplay Port to a vga splitter which works fine. My biggest thing is that when I connect my inFocus IN112 VGA Projector the screen shows up from my mac but to connect my Cinema Display it takes VGA so I had to go from the VGA Splitter on one side and use a vga to dvi adapter and my cinema display shows blank? Help Me Please!!
    Thanks,
    Andrew

I already have a converter on the end of the VGA Splitter to go to the Cinema. The reason I don't use the hdmi to dvi is because with the minidisplay port using vga to the projector and the hdmi going to dvi to the Cinema it makes the projector screen very rough and pixely

  • WIFI random connection problems when connected to Cinema monitor

This is macbook pro purchased prior to 2008. I use an external cinema monitor in my office at home. Recently when I start the laptop with monitor connected I cannot get a airport connection. If I disconnect the monitor and restart downstairs I get an automatic airport connection.
I've changed channels on airport to CH 4 since we use cordless phones which I've read are on CH 11.
If I retart laptop downstairs and bring back upstairs and connect to cinema display, i can get airport connection.
Any thoughts on this? Seems to be a system configuration issue?

Odd that in your outline of troubleshooting steps you say you "disconnect the monitor and restart downstairs"...
Can you start the macbook pro UPSTAIRS where you want to be WITHOUT the cable attached to external display and get CONNECTION?
Sounds crazy, but mabey it's your signal strength? Sometimes a wireless connection will work at the edge of it's range okay but establishing connection at the same place will not work. Does that make sense?
Ensure that you can connect to the network when "upstairs" "near the cinema monitor" like you would if it were all working okay but DONT connect it.
    Eliminate the up/down part first.
Can you elaborate on your network configuration? What Modem, Router, etc are you setup with?

What model (year) MacBook Pro?  Depending on the model, it may have DVI, mini DisplayPort, Thunderbolt, or HDMI video connectors.
What model (yeasr) and size (17", 20". 22" ...) display.  Depending on the model, it may have ADC, singlre-link DVI, dual-link DVI, or Mini DisplayPort connectors.

  • How to connect a Cinema Display to alternative input?

I want to upgrade my Mac Pro (2009) to a reasonably priced graphics card but there are very few that have a Mini Displayport input.
How do I connect a Cinema display with only a Mini DP to an HDMI, Displayport or DVI input? (and still use the sound)
I've looked for Mini DP(female) adapters and can't find any.

I'm unsure of the issue, the Mini has both mDP and HDMI outputs, right? If so, the mDP for the Cinema Display an a HDMI to VGA adapter for the 2nd monitor.

If you don't need high speed for one display, you could use a USB to DVI adapter

  • HT1825 Can I connect post cinema displays to my G4 and how?

Can I connect post cinema displays to my G4 and how?

You can use newer monitors but there are different ways to connect.
It all depends on the video card installed in your computer. Different model cards had different ports. My G4 MDD has the ATI Radeon 9000 with one ADC port (abandoned technology) and one DVI port (useful technology). So we need to either see the description of your graphics card from System Profiler >Graphics/displays, a photo of the ports on your card, or both.
As long as you find a monitor that shares the kind of ports on your Mac, you will be fine. I have a 2008-vintage LCD monitor on that circa 2003 MDD of mine. The MDD shipped with an Apple DVI-to-VGA adaptor so I can connect any monitor with DVI or VGA ports.
There is an inconsistency in your equipment profile: No PowerMac can run OS 10.6. Please do "About this Mac" and verify your processor type and Mac OS version. Then you can edit your profile to avoid future confusion.

I have a macpro(2008) and want to use two Apple LED 24 Cinema Displays.
How can I connect my macpro and two cinema displays.
GT120has one miniport. It's it better to buy two GT120?

    Hi-
Can I Use Dual Apple LED 24 Cinema Displays?
    Yes.
    Either another graphics card or an Atlona box;
    http://www.atlona.com/Atlona-DVI-to-Mini-DisplayPort-Converter-p-17859.html
Either way will get your 24" LED displays connected.
If you use FCP, the box would be better......
