Use Thunderbolt with MBP?

I have a MBP and just received my Thunderbolt Display today.  Very impressive!  Now, since I am totally new to this, I am not sure how to use both of them together.  Right now I have the display with all icons on here basically aas the primary display and the MBP has a bland screen.  How do I use both screens to do work?  Such as Aperture, or Lightroon?  I cant figure out how to use the screens for two separate applications.  Thanks

You can't.  The MBA 2010 only has a MiniDisplay Port, which is not compatible with the Thunderbolt displays.

  • Daisy Chain Thunderbolt with MBP

Can I connect a Thunderbolt drive to a 2012 13" MBP and from that drive, using the other Thunderbolt port - and connect a display monitor using a DVI adapter?

You should be able to. The only way to tell is to try it. But all the specs say it can be done.

  • Unable to use camera with MBP in cradle?

    Happy New Year,
Posting this for my Dad, who finally saw the light and dove headfirst into the world of Mac: appears he is having trouble getting the camera on his 24" ACD to operate when connected to his cradled MBP. We're trying to use Skype or iChat AV, and though he can see me, I can't see him. Audio works fine, and we confirmed the mic on the ACD is being used when the USB is plugged in.
To isolate the problem, I had him disconnect his MBP USB cable from the display to operate the MBP as a stand alone laptop. We disconnected, he woke up his laptop after he opened it, I called him back, and voila- I was able to see and hear him fine on the MBP (green light is lit). He can also successfully see himself in PhotoBooth using either the laptop alone or with the ACD, so no problem there.
I read through a related post (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10425681&#10425681) and two embedded Apple Support articles on the use of the camera, but before we pull the ol' SMC reset I want to make SURE I haven't overlooked something obvious. I know it shouldn't be this hard!
    Thanks,
    Eric

Thanks- answers to your questions in order:
    -Not a dock, and no other piece of hardware involved- he just sets the laptop beneath the ACD in a small, plastic shelf;
-Good question. While on Skype with him, I was wearing headphones. The sound was quite rich and clear while we were talking with his MBP closed and hooked up to his ACD. Upon disconnect from his MBP I noticed that the sound had changed quite dramatically- more tinny and muffled. Then, when I asked him to reconnect the USB cable to his MBP I discovered quite loudly that the built-in mic is nearby, what with all the sudden noise coming from his fumbling with the cable.
-I confirmed with him that the lid is down on the MBP. He is running Apple Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
Most interesting to me: when the MBP is hooked up to the ACD the Skype preferences page states that the camera is "unable to be accessed or is in use". Yet he is able to open up Photo Booth and take his own picture from the ACD camera. Hmmmm.

  • Using files with MBP from windows7 on TC

As title says. I want to back up all myfiles from my windows 7 laptop. (It’s going in for repairs) I have tons ofmusic I would to have on my TC and use on my 17' Gen2 MBP. How would I go abouthaving these files usable so iTunes can see them on my MBP? Or do I have tohave them locally on my MBP? If I do how can I transfer them to my MBP usingthe TC? Should I use the migration assistant? I guess I want to use my TC as astreamer for music. But I also want the pics from that same laptop on TC so I can access them with the MBP.
    Thanks

My MBP is Early 2011 but dunno why cant use mirroring with apple TV, the icon cannot be found. So cannot use mirroring.
I have follow trouble shooting , they recommend to go system preference -> display , thus can find out the mirroring icon if no mean it doesnt support. But according to the web, Early 2011 MBP should be able to use, dunno why.

Just realise I havent updated my OS to mountain lion and this is the reason why I cannot use mirroring before ^^
    Thanks all

  • How Can i connect using Thunderbolt a Macbook Pro with the New iMac

I bought the new Macbook Pro with Thunderbolt and instead of buying a new external monitor, i am thinking that the new iMac with Thunderbolt is a great idea.
Is there a cable to connect the Macbook Pro and use as iMac as external monitor, using Thunderbolt.
    thanks

I understood your question perfectly and the answer is absolutely yes. When you change the iMac into target display mode you underlying operating system continues to run all existing applications. For example in my case if I finished editing some video and am about to enter a lengthy render process or something which may draw lots of resources like hand real, I set it to start on the iMac and then switch it to target display mode to use it as a monitor with my MacBook air in the meantime.
Only one small caveat in your case though.  Since the target display mode is a feature of OSX (eg the OS interprets the special key stroke and changes the iMac into target display mode) you should make sure Lion server supports the target display mode feature. I don't see a reason why it wouldn't but that's the only thing currently crossing my mind. Keep in mind the compatibilities between ports as noted in my blog. If any of your machines have mini display port and you intend to connect the new iMac in target display mode you will run into issues. In that special scenario, I recommend buying a refurb iMac from 2010 which urtilize the displayport allowing you to use it as a display for all your macs -- those with thunderbolt as well as those with displayport. If you have thunderbolts then definitely go with the thunderbolt iMac.

I have a MBP Retina LCD (resolution 2880x1800) and in the office I use it with a Monitor Sony LMD-2450W connected by VGA. After installing 10.9.2 the resolution in the monitor has been downsized to 4:3 (and 1280x960) instead of its 16:9 display. Anyone know how can I change the resolution manually?
Display shows only 3 different resolution if I choose "scaled" but none use the full area of the monitor.
    Thank you
    Marco

This has been an ongoing problem with external monitors that predates 10.9.2. I wrote various tips on different methods here, though the best is probably the hot corner one:

  • Using a PC Keyboard with MBP

I have been using an external PC keyboard with my MBP for a few months now and overall, it works great. The problem I'm having is that the Delete button doesn't work.
I've also noticed that if I use Apple software products, certain buttons behave differently from say using them with Microsoft Office. For example, the End button will scroll this Safari browser down to the bottom, while End will take me to the End of a line in MS Word.
Although it would be nice to get consistent behavior, I'm more concerned with trying to get the Delete button working, or at least have a way to delete a file from Finder by pressing a button on my external PC keyboard.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Boscom,
I have the exact same concerns. I use a Goldtouch ergonomic keyboard with my MBP & I want its keys to behave the same whether I'm using Apple or Windows software.
Please let me know if you run across any help for this issue & I promise to do the same.

  • Using Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt with Connect

I'm trying to use a Blackmagic's Desktop Video 10.3.7 (with an Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt) with Connect and need some help. The video works quite nicely but Blackmagic tells me that their audio will not interface with Connect. Does anyone have experience using an Intensity Shuttle and/or Blackmagic Desktop Video 10.3.7? Has anyone discovered a work around to get Connect to see this audio?
If not, can anyone recommend an external capture device that will accept an SD composite NTSC video and RCA audio signals and get them into Connect?
    Thanks in advance.

James, you have a fairly unique usecase, and most users of Connect don't have access to Blackmagic products. So long as the computer will recognize the input, Connect should accept it. When you use the Audio set up wizard, does it show the device as an option for audio input devices?
Have you tried something like these? Amazon.com: RCA to USB or Amazon.com: RCA to HDMI? They may require using DVdriver on a Windows computer, but that is pretty cheap too.

  • Use thunderbolt display with ps3

    Hi
I've seen some threads with the same question, but there old and no complete answers.
So I'm asking again.. Is there way to use thunderbolt display with playstation 3?

A Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter can connect a HDMI display to a Thunderbolt port.  It does not work in the other direction.  If the PS3 has no Thunderbolt port, you can't use a Thunderbolt display.  There are no adapters or converters that can help.

  • I'm able to transfer iPhotos from Mac to MacPro but data I've added to photos does not transfer. What am I missing? Tried using Thunderbolt, AirDrop, Flash drive with no success.

I'm able to transfer iPhotos from Mac to MacPro but data I've added to photos does not transfer. What am I missing? Tried using Thunderbolt, AirDrop, Flash drive with no success. Do I have to use iCloud for 800 vacation photos or re-enter all the data after transfer?

There is no support for mirroring or syncing iPhoto libraries or Aperture libraries.  You can however export partial Aperture libraries on one mac and merge them into other libraries on a second Mac.
To transfer your edited photos open your photolibrary in Aperture and and collect the edited photos in an album. Then select the album and use the command "File export > Album as new library". This will export all edited photos as a new Aperture library. Copy this library to your other Mac and import it with "File < Import > Library to your other photolibrary on that computer (assuming you are having the same Aperture version on both macs). When merging the new library into your Aperture library, opt to keep the newer versions from the imported library.  iPhoto 9.5.1 will be able to open these merged Aperture 3.5.1 libraries.

  • Thunderbolt display with MBP drops USB/Ethernet ports

Hi just bought a new TBD and use it with my MBP (15inch, early 2011) running Lion 10.8.2 with all updates.
I have a mighty mous and an apple usb keyborad attached to the monitor. In addition, I am using the ethernet
    port on the display.
The problem is that every other day the MBP looses the connection to the ports on the display. This will
happen most of the time when waking up from sleep but sometimes also while the MBP is in use. So,
the MBP will wake up when I use the mouse bout the keyborad and ethernet will not function. Moreover,
any other item plugged into a usb port of the TBD will not work. In particular, unplugging and reconnectiong
the keyboard on the TBD will not fix things (connectiong a usb device on the MBP will work fine).
THe usb/ethernet will work again when I disconnect and reconnect the TBD. Sometimes only usb will
work after such a reconnect and I have to do it twice to get ethernet working again as well.
I saw a number of related problem and I am wondering if apple is working on a fix?

I've only had one problem with my USB ports - and my setup is pretty much like yours ave my MacBook pro is a late 2011 model.
The USB ports on my ATD stopped working. Everything else was functioning fine except anything to do with the USB hub. I thought I had tried everything. Finally, I disconnected the display from the power source for about 5 minutes, plugged it back in and - voila! - everything was working again.
I don't know that this will be the solution to your problem, but I'd give it a try if I were you. Sometimes the most complex issued can be fixed with a very simple solution.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Using thunderbolt to firewire adapter for target disc mode

I need to transfer several GB of data from a 2011 iMac running OS 10.6 to a new Mac Mini running OS 10.9. Can I connect the older iMac to the newer Mini with a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter and boot the iMac into Target Disc Mode and transfer the data to the new Mac Mini? I've used TDM with two Firewire machines, but not with a newer Thunderbolt to Firewire Machine using an adapter.
    Thanks for any input.

    Hi Salnews,
I've done quite a bit of research on this, as this is what I plan to do (only from a MBP on 10.9, but I don't think your situation would be any different) and everything I've read says the answer is yes.
EDIT: I see you're on 10.6.7. You should update to 10.6.8 first.
