Use two monitors (not mirroring)

Hi,
I have a MacBook and want to use an external monitor with the laptop monitor to spread out my work. That is, I want to use both screens with different stuff on them (not mirroring). Specifically: I want to have two MS Word windows open at the same time, but on different monitors.
Is there any way to do this?
Thanks.

Yes it's easy. First decide what monitor you want or have. Then what connector it uses VGA or DVI. I suggest if your buying a new monitor be sure it has a DVI input for digital video. Much nicer than the VGA video. Once you know which monitor you will be using buy the correct adapter.
My SamSung monitor came with both a VGI cable and a DVI cable so all I had to have was the dapter. One of the following will be what you need.
Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter
Apple Mini-DVI to DVI Adapter
The setting for extended desktop are in the Displays section in System Preferences. You can also switch from mirrored to extended with the F7 key.

    Hi,
Here is a good blog talking about using multiple monitors in Windows 7 ultimate and Windows Server 2008 R2,  please take a look if there are any restrict policy settings regarding the monitor numbers like: "Limit maximum number of monitors per session"

how can I use two monitors to increase workspace?

Drag the tabs of any After Effects windows you want to the second monitor.

  • How can i use two monitors in my application?

    Hello,
    Background
I have a dual monitor card and two monitors which I want to use in my LabView application. The application gathers data from a complex sensor and calculates a number of results which need to be displayed graphically, this happens every 10 seconds or so. There is an awful lot of graphs which may be needed to be seen at some time but not routinely. The idea is that one monitor will display all the standard routinely displayed things and will not have any user input whilst the second monitor will display a tab control which has all the other graphs pickable.
    Question
What I want to know is how I can programmatically tell labVIEW to put one vi up in one monitor and another vi in the other. I would then have them both maximised (which I know how to do). I would rather have the monitors set up as individual and that way I could keep the windows control bar on one monitor only. Thus one monitor would be a true user interface and the other simply a display.
Basically how do I tell LabVIEW to use one monitor for a specific vi and not the other.
The card I have is a matrox p650. Any comments would be appreciated.
    Regards
    Kevin

    Hallo,
with new version of LV its more easy, but it also hasn't any troubles with LabVIEW 6.x or 7.x.
Especially with Matrox P650 you will get no any problems (we using
exactly this card together with G550 and our application supported
three monitors at the same time.).
I recommend to you following sequence:
    - After installing driver turn on option for supporting different
resoluton on different monitors. As result you will get two absolutely
    separate monitors.
    - In Windows define which one is primary and which one is secondary.
(On primary monitor located taskbar and all messages dialog boxes will
    appear.).
    - Arrange secondary monitor in display properties - where he located (left from primary, or right)
    - In your VI (which must appear on second monitor) use
FrontPanel.PanelBounds Property Node for positioning. You must set four
values for two corners. Easiest way to found right values is following:
read this property node in while loop and put indicator on front panel.
Then run VI, drag front panel onto second monitor and resize if
necessary, and then you will see right values for PanelBounds. You can
write this property node programmatically in run-time too.
    hope it help,
    good luck.

  • VGA/DVI cable - wanting to use two monitors.

I got a VGA/DVI cable to connect the VGA port on my LCD TV to the DVI port on my desktop computer. I'm trying to use 2 monitors on my computer which has both a VGA and DVI port. My regular monitor was already on, and the computer detected the TV as a monitor but the TV wouldn't detect a signal. I had the TV on the VGA/PC setting. The cable was a return item so it might be defective. I was wondering if there's anything else I could try to get it to work?

My computer's DVI port doesn't allow for the contacts above and below the flat blade like the DVI-I and DVI-A connectors in the picture. The cable that I got does have those contacts.
Ooooooh.  So your computer may be one of the rare animals that doesn't have a DVI-I output, only DVI-D.
Since your TV has HDMI inputs, this is the way to go.  Get a DVI-to-HDMI cable.  It will provide higher quality than VGA and is USUALLY easier to use, I've never had video timing/resolution support issues with HDMI.  (However, every computer I own has an Nvidia graphics card - the story may be different for ATI or Intel graphics!)

  • Dual monitor problem (without using two monitors)

Ok the problem is not with a second monitor not working. The problem is I don't have a second monitor hooked up anymore and the computer still thinks there is still one there.
I hooked a second monitor up to my work computer to help with some work I was doing. Because it was my personal monitor and I was using it on my computer at work I didnt want to leave it there so I disconnected it and took it home when I was done.
Now when I click display preferences>displays on the work computer it still has an option to arrange the second monitor and set all the settings on it even though its not hooked up anymore. This wouldnt be annoying except for the fact if I move my mouse over too far to the right I lose it and sometime is gets "stuck" on the second monitor and I have to restart my computer.
My question is, is there any way to remove the "second display" option from the computer because i dont plan to have a second monitor hooked up again.
    Thanks in advance

    Try resetting parameter RAM.

  • Using two monitors with Logic

I've never used two screens before, so can someone please answer these basic questions?
With LE and Logic Pro, can you have whatever window you like on each monitor - for example Arrange window on one and a score editor on the other? Or is it limited to certain combinations?
And if you've got the mouse cursor on one screen, how does the cursor get to the other screen? Key combination or just push the mouse further across?
    Hope someoen can help!

    Hi Robin
I´ve been using 2 monitors for several years now, and it´s very nice with logic pro. I can´t live without it anymore.
You can use whatever windows in combination to build different screensets. Think of it as it´s one big desktop. When you move the curser near the border off one monitor it pops up on the other. Go for it, you wont regreat it.
    nice regards

  • TV Apple TV MacBook Air:How to connect my computer's monitor and TV as multiple monitors (NOT mirroring)

I have an insignia TV, an apple TV I just bought less than a month ago, and a Macbook Air (mountain Lion) and a MacBook pro (mountain lion).
I am able to connectboth of my computers with the TV to mirror my screen/monitor, but I have not been able to figure out how to use the apple TV to use my TV as a second monitor, like I was able to do with my HDMI cable.
when I bought the Apple TV the person who I talked to at the store told me I would be able to do it, but I havent been able to do it through system preferences and the options for display only show as mirroring through Airplay. I dislike mirroring because while I play something on my computer (or somebody else does) I'd like to still be able to use my computer for browsing or doing homework.
Please help me find a way in which I can make my TV as a second monitor tu my computer without having to have an HDMI cord across the room. I have a puppy and I have had problems with that. That is actually the reason why I considered buying the Apple TV device.
NOTE: In case you know a way to connect my TV to my Macs I have a time capsule and my TV has a DVI, two HDMI, and a USB ports.
    thank you!

  • How to use  two monitors with my Mac mini

    Hello,
I have a Mac mini and using a 20" Samsung Monitor with it which works well. I also have my 40" LCD Samsung telly, set up next to it. Whenever i watch a DVD using my Mac i have to swap over the cables. Is there a way of getting the right cables etc and making it so i would be able to watch a dvd on the 40" and still use the 20" surfing the net etc. I had a similar set up with my old windows laptop, but cant seem to work out how do it with the mac. Both monitors have modern sockets, the 40in has HDMI/DVI IN and AGV, the 20" has AGV and HDCP/DVI IN. Many thanks.

To the best of my knowledge there is no way to use dual displays on the Mini. You may be able to find some adapter that will allow you to physically connect two displays, but they will be mirrored, not spanned.
To do what you describe would take spanning, which the Mini is not capable of doing. Unless something has changed recently,..

  • IMac: using two monitor outputs as one

Hello!  We are using last generation 23" iMac at a church with GTX 750m.  It has two thunderbolt outputs. I want to use both ports to send same signal: one to VGA projectors with 1024x768 resolution and second to HDMI live broadcasting equipment with 1080x1920 resolution. Problem is that presentation software can send signal to one of them but not to both. Is there a way to parallel thunderbolt ports or to combine them in one using third party software?

  • Can I use two monitors?

I'd like to put the develop tools on another monitor. Is this possible?

    No, not really.
The tools are attached to the module.  You can put the grid, a loupe view and a few other things on the second monitor, but not the controls.

  • LG TV as a Monitor - Problem with not Mirroring Display

I used to be able to extend to my LG TV and use that as an additional monitor side by side with my Macbook Pro 17" but now it only allows me to mirror. What has changed. I have tried different HDMI cables.

Mirrored mode mirrors the display including resolution. Use extended mode not mirrored mode to set the external display resolution to the TV's native mode.

  • How Can I use 2 Macs and a PC with two monitors

This is for my office at work.
I currently am using dual monitors and sharing those between a G4 and a PC. I'm using a Belkin switch box for the two computers. I'm adding a Mac Pro. I'm thinking I might use the Mac Pro by itself at another workstation but I would like to use it at my current workstation along with my other machines.
I'm getting a new 23" monitor with the Mac Pro. I want to use it as my main monitor, then use one of my other monitors as a second screen. Is it possible to use two monitors with 3 computers? I would have to use the new keyboard and mouse (both will be standard, not wireless) on both of the macs and use the PC keyboard and mouse.
    Thank You
    Jim

I would use the new Mac Pro as the main workstation and attach your mouse, keyboard and your new monitor to it.
Then use the Belkin Switch Box to connect 1 monitor to the G4 and PC.
Download and configure 'Synergy' (http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/) on the new Mac Pro (as the primary) and the G4 and PC (as secondary) - This will allow you to deal with only one keyboard and mouse.
I'm with Malcolm, I would download and install VMware Fusion. VM the PC w/ Converter (http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/) and only deal with the new Mac Pro and G4. With the new Mac Pro, you can fire up the PC VM with 2 cores and have it set to a secondary space. You will not notice the difference.

  • Using Two Minotors with Display Spanning Monitors

I'm interested exploring the option of using two monitors to display apps such as: Aperture, CS2 Photoshop (used as the external editor to Aperture), FinalCut Express and iMovie. My G5's video card will handle two monitors so that shouldn't be a problem. But was wondering how the spanning of the video display between two monitors works for these apps and if this is an efficient workflow?
I have an Apple 20" Cinema Display and wish I had purchased a bigger monitor. However a Windows friend insists two monitors that span the application display accross both monitors is more efficient than a larger monitor. Two 20" monitors certainly would have more screen "real estate" than a single 23" monitor but I don't know how well a dual monitor set up would actually work!
    Interested in your experience here!
    Thanks!

    Hello Sven
The only issue with dual monitors is not having them once you've had them!!! It is very addictive and very very productive..
Having used monitors of odd sizes and now have two the same size, I would strongly suggest having two the same size!!
    Steps in the use of
    1. Level the two tops of the monitors slightly above eye height
    2. Put the monitors in a very slight arc
    3. Now sit slightly in front of one (just off centre), this is your main monitor. Your work window with the menu at the top.
    4. Now move all the junk to the second window, toolbars, palettes email RSS newsgroups and so on..
You now can glance at the second monitor WITHOUT moving your head and this is where time is saved. As you get used to the same items being in the same place I can seem to change things from my peripheral vision.. Now your flying !!
So to run two applications dependently eg a picture in photoshop from Aperture. Aperture in the main window and Photoshop in the other with all the junk!!
I have also sat for long periods at a friends 32" and get terrible neck ache, your always sat/looking in wrong the place
Good luck, any more questions fire away..
