Use Unicode for SMS!

Dear developers,
Since Skype was taken over by Microsoft, you managed to destroy everything this product was preferred by millions of users.
1. Why chat messages aren't delivered instantly? Why do you wait for both parties be online at the same time?
2. SMS containing specific national characters are messed up, delivered 2 times, but still illegible for the receiver, etc. Even a beginner in programming knows that one has to use Unicode for international applications, not ANSI, not anything else.

I love my Hangouts application. Let's see if we can get this up and running for you. Have you been able to use this application before? Or did you just installed this app onto your phone? Have you been able to delete the application off the phone and redownload it? When you receive a text message does it come in through the Hangouts app or the normal stocked application that is on the phone? Please keep us posted.

By default SMS has it's own text encoding and therefore you cannot use UTF8 nor UTF16. There is a special UCS2 encoding, alowing for 70 unicode characters to be send (per sms). See: http://www.dreamfabric.com/sms/

Using MMC For SMS In N80

I'm using N80-1 with firmware version 3.0617.0.6. I've also installed the SMS Accelerator patch done by nokia inside my phone memory. I've been using my phone like that for almost 2 weeks right now, and i was very happy and satisfied because all sms are sent very fast, no more phone hung ups. In other words, everything was going smooth. Ecxept ofcourse on the topic about the battery life, but i don't care about that since i always carry an extra battery cause i use a universal charger.
Now, i tried using my MMC to store incoming sms, I found out that it is still very slow whenever i switch to inbox, outbox, sent items, etc. Furthermore, SMS sending is very slow, like 10seconds before it is sent.
Any ideas on how to prevent slowliness when using MMC as the medium for recieving sms for Nokia N80?

nokia phones have always been real slow when you use an external memory. in the user guide for the N91 it mentions you should only use the phone memory for this.
personally, as memory cards are so unreliable, i would stick with using the phone memory. you are probably not going to run out of space any time soon

Can I get South African number to use it for sms? I need no call but sms only. (I mean incoming sms from SA to me)

I too would like to disable this "feature" as I don't use it, nor want it.
Just yesterday, my Microsoft keyboard malfunctioned and sent a burst of SMS messages through Skype until it drained my account which contained the default $5.00 credit when I signed up. I don't particularly care about the $5.00, but I'm annoyed that by dumb luck the feature sent these messages to my director (various quantities of 1s) and about 45 of them. The only thing that stopped sending the messages was that my account ran out of money. Good thing that it's not configured for auto-recharge. I have another Skype account with money in it and to prevent a similar occurrence in that account, I'm now going to dump the credit by texting myself. In texting myself because my cell phone has unlimited texting it at least will not cost me more money.
Depending on whether or not he has a text messaging plan on his phone this could create a nice little charge.
We need to have the ability to block SMS messages just as we can with our mobile phones.

The problem, if you backend system is not unicode, can be, that user with the browser accessing the Webdynpro page, can enter data of any codepage (because browser is Unicode), the data will then be stored with a wrong codepage in the system and will be destroyed.
Additionally all successor versions of ERP will be Unicode only.
And on top of that, if you plan to use Java components (such as a portal), the backend must be Unicode (see Note 975768 - Deprecation of Java features with non-Unicode Backend).

Charged for SMS - did not use SMS

I have been charged for 2 SMS. I do not use SMS. The number listed for SMS in my detailed usage is a landline which is not capable of sending SMS. Spent 30 minutes on support chat with a rep who had a very poor grasp of english and accomplished nothing. Will be canceling Skype after this billing period.

I am now unable to send SMS messages from Skype, in spite of having a credit in my acct.
The message in the dialogue box is "to send a SMS to this number you need to verify your number.

Why is Apple using short code SMS for 2 step authentication?

I have been trying for months to get 2 step authentication to work on my AppleID but I never got the SMS code from Apple. In the past I have had no problems with receiving 2 step authentication codes from Google, MS or Yahoo so I knew that worked. I knew that my MVNO blocks short code SMS because they have been used to scam/charge people for services. That got me to thinking would Apple be using short code SMS to send key information for 2 step authentication? I spent hours looking through posts here and on Google and discovered a post by "yohdaddy" in this thread

that indeed is what Apple is doing! Why Apple use short code SMS which providers sometimes block and will not always unblock? Use a normal 10 digit phone number like Google, MS and Yahoo does. That way critical information like 2 step authentication verification codes will not be blocked. Surely your company can afford it!

iPhone 3G in a coma state though I was using iOS4 for a while (until today that is). Now "restored" to iOS4.2.
The problem still persists. When it's plugged into PC and charging, pressing Power / Home button always wakes iPhone from lock / sleep.
When taken off power, it still allows me to wake the phone from lock / sleep, but only if I do it every 5 seconds. After around 5 seconds, pressing the Power / Home button doesn't wake the phone from sleep, therefore necessitating a Hard Reboot (Power + Home held for 10 seconds).
There's also a very visible lag when using anything, even though my phone has no songs / apps / videos in it anymore.
When calling to the iPhone or sending SMS', the sender finds as though the iPhone is working, but the iPhone itself makes no response to show that a message has been received or that it is being called.
This is just infuriating, because if it can't do any of the other functions, it could at least be usable as a phone
This is an emergency, I don't know how to get ahold of another phone, and I have exams for which I need my phone to coordinate things like transport, or calls /messages from the exam centre.

No help, anyone ?
It feels such a waste to have a perfectly usable and amazing (though apparently obsolete) phone which can't be used for a tiny little bug when it's not connected to the charging station :C

How do I typeset vietnamise text in Indesign CS6. Client is saying I need to use Unicode!?

Can anyone help me. I have a word document from the client thats in vietnamise. I copied and pasted the text and used Ariel regular in CS6.
the client has come back saying:
Our Vietnamese translators have advised there is a problem with the font on the two attachments. They suspect it may be because of using VNI font instead of Unicode, and as a result they are unable to read these documents.
Does anyone know how I can solve this?

You need to have fonts with Vietnamise characters. For example Minion Pro. That is all.

You can convert this text in any good text editor, which has the option "Reopen using encoding", For example Text Wrangler.
Yu can convert every Vietnamise glyphs using grep in InDesign too. But it is very time consuming job.

Using Unicode with MS-SQL-Server 2000

i want to migrate my coldfusion application to support
unicode. for that i read some articles here in the knowledge bas e
and on the web. So i actually tested with:
* correct use of cfcontent,cfprocessingdirective
* storing source-files with UTF8 (BOM)
* activating Unicode-handling for strings in
datasource-settings of coldfusion admin
* using nvarchar instead of varchar on mssql-server
my firsts test displaying diffrent characters of different
languages (chinese, japanese, arabic) look good. Tests storing and
selecting example strings in that languages also look good.
but now i read, that mssql stores unicode data with the UCS-2
implementation and cannot handle UTF-8 directly. but my
coldfusion-application will be converted to UTF-8.
now my question: Do i have to do special handling storing and
selecting the application data or does this the mssql jdbc driver
for me. What about characters in some languages which use 3 Bytes
in UTF8. How are they handled when MS-SQL-Server 2000 uses UCS-2
(max 2 Bytes) instead?

no need to worry, the db driver will handle that for you.
just make sure your
encoding is the same end-to-end.
also a potential gotcha has just been exposed in unicode
handling for sql server
related to cfqueryparam under loads, you need to convert
everything to "N"
datatypes to avoid this. see jochem's blog:
