Use usb superdive on retina mbp win 7? Help!

I have alot of software on disks that I need to be able install on windows 7 on my new MacBook Pro with Retina Display.
When I plug in the USB Superdrive, nothing happens, it there any way to get it recognised?
I would appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Ben

Like Shootist, I've not come across any definitive answer as to whether the USB SuperDrive that was sold for years for the MacBook Air is the same as that sold for the MBP-R. I know that they're both USB 2, that the price is the same, that they look the same, etc., but I don't know if it's a different part number. Since you're in your 90-day phone support coverage, I would call Apple and see if there is a 'right' USB 2 SuperDrive for the MBP-R's. I know that on my 2011 MBP, I can load anything into Windows using the built-in SuperDrive, so a USB SuperDrive should be enabled as well. Different machines, different connectors, yes, but still...
Call Apple and ask. And let us know as I'm very curious.
Good luck,
Clinton

  • Retina MBP or Non-Retina?

    Hello!
I'm trying to decide between getting the 15 Retina MBP or the (non-retina) MBP?
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Jamie

the Retina is lighter, more expensive, automatically comes with an SSD which is faster then a regular hard drive, and has the higher-res Retina Display. it is also non-upgradable, so you need to purchase the machine you want for the next 3-4 years now.
the regular MBP is cheaper, upgradable later on (more cheaply if you buy 3rd party RAM/HD/SSD), comes with the same processor, is heavier. i personally love the anti-glare screen.
the choice is basically yours. if you want lighter and the Retina Display, or upgradable and cheaper. both are nice machines. and as was said, numerous discussions on this.

  • Can I use a retina MBP for windows - MS Office development

    Hi,
I'm a windows user doing a lot of development work in MS Excel-VBA.
Because of the display I really would like to switch to the 13" retina MBP to do my daily work (using Parallels), but my question is whether it's really possible/advisable to work with Windows- MS Office 2010 on a retina machine? Does Excel (charts,forms...) behave well on the retina or would I run into too many formatting/display issues?
I plan to use Parallels 8 and Win 7 or 8.
Does anybody have experience on this?
    Greetings,
    BD

I can't speak to teh display quality of Office for Windows 2010 on a Retina display, but I'm successfully running Parallels 8 with Windows XP and Office 2010 - no problems with VBA at all.
But let's hear from the Retina owners - I wouldn't think that you'd have any problems.

  • Suggestion on Used 'regular' MBP vs. Retina MBP 15"

    Hi there,
I'm planning to buy a Used MBP 15", and is trying to figure out which way to go. I outlined 3 options for myself:
    Used MBP 15" regular (none retina) of Late 2011-Mid 2012 models, with higher specs i.e. 8GB RAM, 500/750GB HDD (or get 4GB RAM and then upgrade it myself, as I heard it's very inexpensive);
Used MBP 15" Retina of average specs (8GB RAM and 256GB SSD). Would be about $300 higher than #1.
Refurbished MBP 15" Retina from Apple Store. Would be about $300 higher than #2 but with 1 year warranty.
I do not really need Retina for my purpose, but looking into it only from the future perspectives point of view (there might be a need for it in 2-3 years, and I assume resale value for those would be higher in 3 years or so). I would need speed and preferable bigger Internal storage (but can also live with 256GB SSD and the rest to be External).
As far as I heard older (non-retina) versions also more upgradable than retina ones.
What would be Apple/MBP folks suggestions on which way to go?
    Thanks in advance!

    For SSD-like speed:
Disk drive performance has improve dramatically compared to the disks that come in the non-Retina MBPs.  For around $110 you can get a Seagate 1 TB SSHD hybrid 2.5" drive that has an 8 GB SSD cache.  It provides SSD-like performance for a fraction of the cost of an SSD and with high capacity.
Installation instructions for RAM and disks are available at ifixit.com.
$5 toolkit with the tiny Phillips screwdrive to open the Mac and a torque screw driver for changin the disk:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/TOOLKITMHD/
Inexpensive USB 2.0 disk enclosure for chainging out the disk: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/ES2.5BPU2S/
Porting the data from the old drive to the new one is easy:
Install the new drive in the external enclosure.
Install OS X onto the new drive.
    Boot from the new drive.
Use Migration Assistant to copy data from the old drive to the new one.
Physically swap the two drives using the tutorial above.

  • Mid-2012 MBP with 27" Cinema Display SCREEN GOES BLACK WHEN USING USB PERIPHERALS IN DOCK

I haven't been able to find any straightforward answer as to why this is happening and it's becoming one of the most infuriating things in my life, impeding my workflow and costing me unmeasurable time in waiting, rebooting, screwing with cables, etc.
I use my MBP as a DAW for multitracking live audio events to ProTools through a digital console where I work. Here's my gear list that I use every day:
    Mid-2012 MBP - Yosemite, 8GB, i7 quad 2.5, mechanical hd
HengeDocks dock for my exact model machine - has set-screw jacks for CinemaDisplay power, Tbolt, FW800, USB, USB, SDcard, headphones, etc
    USB wired keyboard
Anker 1x4 USB3.0 hub - I have a TimeMachine 1TB drive, 3TB project backup drive, audio interface and MIDI I/O or PT iLok, depending what I'm working on
    Magic Mouse (BlueTooth)
    Here's what's happening:
SCENARIO 1 - I insert the CinemaDisplay (cD) power connector and TBolt plugs into the dock, tighten the set screws, close the lid of my MBP (already logged into Yosemite & linked with MagicMouse [mM]) and stick the MBP into the dock... everything comes up on the cD and I can go about my day. At this point, I can plug the USB hub into the back of the cD and the system sees the hub & all peripherals listed just fine.
SCENARIO 2 - Install cD powercon, TBolt connector, USB3 hub, USB keyboard into the dock, close the lid on MBP (again, logged in), insert into dock... cD comes up, looks great for about 15 seconds then goes completely blank. No response from key presses, mouse clicks, threats with a hammer, etc. Then, of course, I have to yank the MBP out of the dock, which hard-disconnects the external drives (backup and TimeMachine... good for them, right?) and causes the MBP to flake, thinking it's still in the dock, then not, then logging me out & requiring a password (not a big deal- I deal with copyrighted stuff, so passwords aren't the issue).
***EVEN IF I DO NOT PLUG THE USB3 HUB INTO THE HENGE DOCK, THE cD STILL GOES BLANK AFTER 15 SEC... IT ONLY SEEMS TO LIKE THE TBOLT AND POWER... NO OTHER PERIPHERALS (fw800, USB, etc)***
It seems like the MBP freaks out when the lid is closed and there are USB/FW peripherals plugged in while using a secondary TBolt display as the main output... seems stupid... if I need a closed-lid dock, the MBP shouldn't care what I have plugged in while the lid is closed. I had the same issues with Mountain Lion & Mavericks and now it's being repeated with Yosemite.
My goal in this exercise is simply to free up the USB jacks on the back of the cD for two reasons - #1) from time to time, I have extra things to plug in and I don't want some massive USB 1x8 hub on my desk... looks stupid; #2) the bottleneck created by plugging in the hub to the back of the cD (another hub via TBolt) almost triples the time required to back up/copy files. I move files from system drive to backup drive & back VERY often due to the nature of my job... speeding up this process would greatly improve my efficiency in the matter. Why would Henge create a dock with all the jacks on it to allow someone to plug into a cD that won't frickin work with said cD? Every other dock I've found makes the user stick the MBP on a slanted, goofy-looking stand and have the lid open or something dumb like that... what I have is the setup I need... just need the USB stuff to work while lid is closed and everything from powercon & cD to USB3 hubs will work without making the cD freak out.
    Any ideas out there?

Have now taken the 27" display into the repair shop and after 24 hrs got the phone call - "appears to be nothing wrong with it, will check again on Tuesday and let you know".
I can't seem to find anything on the net describing a similar problem. Everything is working fine right now with the Mac Pro connected to the older 20 inch Cinema Display. In fact, everything seems to be working about a second faster.
I was told by the local retailer that Apple no longer makes the 27 inch LED Cinema Display product and the new display, the "Thunderbolt" will not work with my 13 month old Mac Pro.

I thought that installation through Boot Camp required, without hacks, a physical optical disc to install Boot Camp? I don't use it any longer since I run XP under Parallels, but I would swear that you have to use a disc, and not a USB thumb drive, to install Windows?
Maybe some real Boot Campers will visit this thread...

If you have the Media you can use it to create a bootable USB key via boot camp assistant.
It will create the usb and has the option of pre-downlading the drivers and bootcamp utilities for windows.
It is pretty much all automated and quite simple.

  • My retina MBP using all its ram?

    Hello,
My first gen 15" retina MBP is almost always out of its 8GB of memory (I notice by watching activity monitor). Usually only 60 or so MB is free
This occurs with rather plain usage - Chrome web browser, itunes, word, mail open on average
    Activity Monitor lists:
    kernal_task : 909MB, 101 threads
    WindowServer : 378 MB, 6 threads
then mail, chrome, itunes, etc all taking normal amounts, 100MB each or so
Whenever I close some windows to free up memory, it is quickly refilled by I don't know what.
    Is this strange behavior?
    Thanks,
    Grant

Mavericks is designed to use RAM more efficiently than prior OSXs.  What you are observing is different from what you may have experienced but normal.  If you see green, all is good.

why does watching just youtube videos causes my fanspeed to be very audible! im using a retina MBP 2012 june

Video use a lot of CPU/GPU resources and thus creates heat.  The fans speed up in order to dissipate the heat.  If you open Activity Monitor, it will show you the % of CPU that the video utilizes.  At high speeds, the fans are very much audible.
    ciao.

  • Having problems with my new usb superdrive in my MBP retina display.

I just bought an apple usb superdrive for my new MBP retina display. I connected the usb superdrive to the MBP and I was going to install a program but doesn't appear in the desktop or neither in finder. The disk is still inside the usb superdrive! The MBP doesn't recognize the usb superdrive. What do I do now? The disk is still inside!

With the system turned on Disconnect the superdrive and then reconnect it. If that fails try the other USB port, the one on the other side.
If That Fails take the system and the superdrive to the Apple store you bought them from and have them fix whatever is wrong with either the drive or the system or both.

Starting last night, seemingly out of the blue, I have been receiving nearly hourly kernel panics / crashes on my 3 week old Retina MBP.  At first I thought my USB mouse was causing it, but it has since happened again after I stopped using it.
I have booted into safe mode and it doesn't seem to happen while I'm there.

  • Mac Mini i7 Late 2014: same specs of 13" Retina MBP?

In the last 2 years I have been using a 13" Macbook Pro 2011 im clamshell mode connected to a 47" LG HDTV with a Apple keyboard and an Apple trackpad. I just realized I don't need a laptop anymore. This MBP just died. I was checking the specs of the late 2014 Mac Mini and realized the i7 built to order model has the same specs of the 13" Retina Macbook Pro. Are they the same machine? Dothey have the same performance? Are the only differences the display, keyboard and trackpad? If this is right, I'll get a Mini (i7, 16GB RAM, 512 SSD) instead to replace my dead MBP with a 13" Retina MBP (i5, 8GB RAM, 512 SSD) for the same price in NY's B&H.

They are basically the same. The Mini also has an ethernet port and more USB ports and and ir receiver. They hae same processor and built-in iris 5100 graphics

  • Can't adjust thunderbolt display on Retina MBP

    Hi,
I have a Retina MBP with two thunderbolt displays, the second daisy-chained to the first. My problem is that I cannot adjust the brightness on one of the displays (the first in the chain).  I've tried using the keyboard's f1/f2 keys, I've tried fn-ctrl-f1/f2, etc.  I've also tried going through the display preferences, where if I adjust the brightness slider bar, it adjusts only the second display.
I've rearranged the two displays so that the display with the adjustable brightness is first in the chain, and the problem migrates with the problematic display.  I've also tried isolating the problematic display by removing the second monitor.  In that case, none of the keys (f1/f2, fn-ctrl-f1/f2) have any effect.  Even the display preferences is missing the brightness slider bar.  I've tried powering everything off (unplugging), removing all of the USB devices attached to either display, but nothing seems to change this behavior.
Both displays have firmware version 22.2.  Does anyone have any suggestions for debugging this further?

I sorted out how to adjust brightness from your MBP Retina to your TB display. Hold the keys Shift+ALT+ F2 or F1 depending on whether you want the display brighter/darker. This will ONLY adjust your laptop monitor which was frustrating so I figured out the following.
In order for the above key command to work ( Shift+ALT+ F2)  on the external monitors, you need to plug in the USB chord hardwired to the TB display into the USB hub of your keyboard or USB hub of your laptop. This allows you to control the brightness through the USB. In addition you need to plug in the keyboard's USB to the laptop. So one USB  into laptop from the TB display and one USB from keyboard into computer. Please let me know if this worked for you if you haven't already sorted the problem. Worked for me!
    Thanks!
    Daniel.

  • Retina MBP 2.6 only 3 hours of battery life?

My 1 week old Retina MBP 2.6 is only getting 3 hours max on battery with light surfing. When watching videos i also only get 3 hours tops. Bluetooth is off, keyboard light off, screen backlighting 50%, gfxCardstatus set to integrated only (also confirmed in energy saving settings). I run 10.7.4, all updates installed.
Is this normal? Isn´t it supposed to get at least 5 hours when browsing the web (no youtube)? Should i return it and get the 2.3 instead for more battery life?
    Thanks in advance.

There have been reports of problems with various models experiencing low battery life after installing Mountain Lion but as you're still using Lion, you should be getting at least 7 hours on battery for light web surfing (not a lot of YouTube videos, etc.).
My suggestion would be to take the machine into your local Apple Store and let them deal with the problem. Before that you can download the free "Battery Health" from the App Store which lets you see your battery health in real-time, as opposed to always having to go into your System Report. There's no reason that you should be getting less than 7+ hours of battery life.

  • Upgraded 2012 MACBOOK PRO 2.6Ghz 8GB RAM 750 GB an alternate for RETINA MBP 15 or NOT?How good is its potential, reliability ?

I am a student and an aspiring filmmaker.I am also into digital cinematography (Canon 550D) and now will be venturing into editing. I am in DIRE NEED of help
I have a few problems regarding the purchase of Macbook pro.I live in Kolkata(India).I have been waiting for the past 1 and a half years to buy a Mac but after the release of Retina Macbook pro 15.I am left confused. Its near unupgradability and unreparibility rumors, delayed delivery, and 1st generation hardware issues especially the lack of Optical drive made me reconsider my decision of buying one.
I want to know whether I can go for the top model of Non Retina - 2.6Ghz 8GB RAM 750 GB 1 GB Nvidea as an alternate choice for Retina MBP pro or NOT ?
1.I wanted to buy the Retina Base model. Though it is very recently launched and there is a big risk buying it because they say it is unrepairable and unfixable as 'everything is glued into the motherboard' dialogue scares me. Something goes wrong after purchase and they send it back to US, is what the Apple officials said. Moreover they don’t keep one on a demo at Apple stores in kolkata. I have searched almost everywhere and have been to many resellers in my city but no use.
NOW,I am very sceptical about custom ordering a Macbook 15 non retina with High-Res 1680X1050p from US.I don’t know how much custom duty or expenses I have to pay and is it safe or not. Time is also a factor. Sadly, I have to buy one in Kolkata (my city) it seems.
    2. I am opting for Macbook Pro 15,2.6 Ghz,8GB RAM. Buying it for the sole purpose of editing(audio, video, photos).I need something which is fast along with a good screen size. My original decision was to buy the 17inch but after the launch of Retina and the upgraded 15 inch, I am only looking forward to the upgraded models. Many say 13 inch is fast, but it features a dual core with a maximum of 2.9Ghz clockspeed. I on the other hand want a quad core i7 with good upgradability options and a good screen size. The 13 inch may be a favorite for many, but I want nothing less than a 15 inch. One good option I get with non Retina 15 is its upgradability, while many say Retina MBP 15 can be made upgradable in future but that time is yet to come and by the time the whole web becomes ‘retina friendly’ and all applications supporting its 2880X1800 resolution, I may end up waiting only. Yes the picture quality remains unbeatable when compared to Retina Pro and it will always be. Though friends, I am a student, I want something which is fast, can run almost anything and future dependable. Retina Mac book Pro in India is 2799 USD - Base model. I cannot pay that amount just for the screen. As far as speed is concerned, I plan to get an OWC SSD and a 16 GB OWC RAM in the future resulting in greater speed when comparing the configuration with Retina 15.That problem is solved.
My problem here is this: The web is filled with reviews and videos of Retina Macbook Pro and the upgraded Macbook Pro 15 is just no where, if you even find a few videos, they only feature unboxing videos of Macbook pro 15 (i7-2.3Ghz-4GB-500GB-500MB Nvidea).Other videos compare the 2.3ghz model with Retina 15 pro. They are not elaborate like the 15 Retina Pro reviews.
    1. I want to know about the real performance, potential, pros, cons of Macbook Pro 15 (i7 2.6Ghz 8GB RAM 750 GB 1GB Nvidea graphics).
So my question to you is what is your opinion on the 15 inch non retina ? HOW FAST do you think is the new upgraded 15inch non retina i7-2.6Ghz-8GB-750GB model really is ?I have read on many mac forums and seen on a particular youtube video that 15inch 2.3Ghz model takes an alarming 40 seconds to start because of traditional hard drive ! A normal DELL Inspiron starts at 15 secs max with i3+4 GB RAM and this particularly confuses me about the whole quad core processing and stuff and speed when running applications like C6,FCP,Lightroom etc is to be determined in regard to the model I want to buy.
    2. Is it necessary to buy APPLE CARE WARRANTY when buying a laptop from Apple. What are the benefits and how is it different form the normal customer care ?
    3. Please enlighten me on some nice headphones from Sennheizer under 90 USD.I am considering Sennheiser HD 439.I am not a bass freak and I want something to use for listening to voice, loud clear. In short, a headphone for all purpose. I heard the HD 449 is not that good compared to HD 439.They say it is Jazz oriented. Another confusion  !
Finally, If you know anyone who knows about this configuration (15inch 2.6 8GB RAM 750GB) and its performance than please help me out my friends. Any small detail, input, you feel like please let me know. Please help me be sure and satisfied am buying my Macbook Pro very soon and I am awaiting your response.

Well, are you talking about a 750 Hard Drive or SSD?  If SSD (quite expensive) it will certainly be as fast.  One option is to get the smallest HD they have and with the Non Retina you can upgrade the HD to an SSD later or now but save a little money.  Check with iFixit or OWC for instructions.  HD's do take longer to start up and load, but once open, the processor and video work just the same as on the Retina model.  The SSD speed is nice, but really not critical.  So you have to wait a minute for your computer to boot up.  The other big question is you need to find out if the non-retina model will take 16GB of ram.  According to OWC's site, it will, 16GB for 150USD.  Once you get programs open and resident in ram, everything will fly.
