Used and allocated Shadow Copy Storage space is showing values in GB .

Hi All ,
This is an production issue and i need an urgent help on this case.
In my environment i am having exchange server 2013 in DAG extended with three sites.On that i am having two mailbox servers in the production site and one mailbox server in remaining two sites.
we have mounted all the mailbox databases in one production mailbox server.Those databases are present in LUN mapped to the production mailbox servers from SAN storage.
Issue : 
Few of the mailbox databases are occupying too much of size on the LUN than it's original size.
Say for instance i have kept the mailbox database called "test" which is present on the LUN with the size of 190 GB.On that whole space the mailbox database is occupying only 100GB but on the diskmgmt and also on the explorer it is showing
only the free space as 17 GB.
Finally we have run the below mentioned command and found that the used and allocated shadow storage is occupying the size around 34 GB.

Question : How to reclaim the space occupied by the shadow copy storage to the LUN ? If possible someone tell me why this issue is happening ?

According to my research and technology, it’s caused by Volume Shadow Copy Service which is used to backup infrastructure for the Microsoft operation systems, as well as a mechanism for creating consistent point-in-time copies of data known as shadow copies.
We can use VssAdmin to create, delete, and list information about shadow copies. More details about Volume Shadow Copy Service, for your reference:

    During the restore of data using VSS Snapshots it deleted all the snapshots, this event was written in the system log :

    It only restored 20 GB of data and there should be plenty of space in the Shadow copy storage

    Since the shadow copy storage space doesn’t run out, the issue could be due to the Volsnap.sys driver has encountered excessive I/O activity.
    You could refet to the article below to resolve the issue. This article is for Windows 2003 but it will also help on Windows 2008 R2 system.

    Wbadmin throws the following error when running on Win8.1 upgraded from Win8 and using the -allCritical flag.

    I want to be able to get the operating system's state volumes and not use -include:c: in a fixed way for cases when os is not on drive C.
    Any suggestions?

    For the issue, the target volume for a critical-volume backup can be a local drive, but it cannot be any of the volumes that are included in the backup. This is important.
    Also, this error means that there is no enough space on the target volume.
    I suggest you check the space on your target volume.

    I am facing an issue regarding DPM 2010 backup. 
    Every time my tape backup is being failed and the error is "The shadow copy of volume E: were aborted because the shadow copy storage failed to grow" .
    My protected server is an win 2008R2 File server which is getting backed up from DPM 2010 server. 
    The total space of E: is 700 GB out of which 750 MB space is free. 
    So i am quite confused how much space should be free in protected server drive for successful backup.
    It would be great if someone could help me regarding this matter.

    Though it is written that minimum space required is 300 MB but i still do have 700 MB free out of 759 GB in my protected server drive (E:).
    The error detail is ;
    Source: Volsnap
    Event ID: 35
    Error General: "The Shadow copies of volume E: were aborted because the shadow copy storage failed to grow."
    The backup server is DPM 2010 attached with IBM tape library which have LTO 5 cartridge.
    Protected server is Win2k8R2 file server. 'E:' drive total space is 759 GB in which 700 MB is free.
    So , as per my understanding from the error above is VSS is unable to grow because of limited free space in the specific E drive. In Drive (E:) there is only 700 MB space free. Now my question is how much free space should be there in the protected server
    drive to complete the backup successfully by the DPM 2010 server which is storing the backups in IBM LTO5 tape library.
    Is there someone who had faced this issue. Please help!!

    Does that mean  I have to set asides space on the protected server (a file server), so it can store shadow copies, and the DPM server taps into those  shadow copies to create its recovery points etc?

    Hi Joe,
    when you are protecting a file server. DPM will implement a change journal to record all the blocks that have been changed.
    Then once the sync starts. The journal is interrogated and will tell DPM which file have been changed.
    Then the VSS writer makes a copy of these data and send them to DPM.
    You don't need additionnal space or to create a new folder on your server.

  • I can't update to ios 7.1 and I have enough storage space

    I have tried updating to ios 7.1 and it said I did not have enough storage space.  I removed over 700 photos and the storage space is now 4.8 gb, but it still won't install.  I have tried switching off and on again to refresh the storage capacity, but the update still won't install.  Please help.

    Text messages containing photos & videos can take up a lot of space as well. That being said, if you have deleted these, check your Other space when connected to iTunes. This can take up a lot of space and can be addressed using Kappy's User Tip: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5142

  • Does deduplication and Volume Shadow Copy work together?

    I have a fileserver with five 2TB-disks on it on a 2012 R2 server. I want to enable dedup on it that according to DDPEval.exe would save ~40%. I would also like to enable Volume Shadow Copies on the volumes so the the end user easily could restore removed
    files and folders.
    I have not found anything from microsoft about use both these features on the same volume, is it supported?
    I have done some searching and found that for some users the say that dedup would change so much on the snapshots that it have to delete older snapshots, even though not much data have changed, the dedup force VSC to delete old snapshots.
    Any experience with these features co-located on the same volume? Do I need to choose just one of them to use on my volumes?

    Based on my research, the Shadow Copy and Deduplication could be used together in a Windows Server 2012 R2. The deletion of the old snapshots could be due to the Volume for which the shadow copy being created is more than 64 TB. Volume Shadow Copy Service supports
    a volume size of up to 64 TB.

  • How come Photostream uses 734Mb of my iPad storage space, when Photostream is disabled, and there are no photos on the iPad?

    I recently disabled Photo-stream on all my iOS devices, because I import them manually anyway, and the logic in Photostream simply did not catch on with me.
    On my iPad, no matter that I stopped any photos from syncing to it from iPhoto, and got a completely blank photos archive on the iPad, it still claims under "usage", that I use 111Mb on my Photo Library, and a whopping 737Mb on Photostream.
    Since this iPad is completely photo-free, it is a great annoyance that it still reserves 848Mb of space for photos. My available space on the iPad is 1.2Gb, and I have trouble updating some apps because of the missing empty.
    I don't want to delete apps, when there is actually enough space, but Apple simply wont let me administer my space. I tried swiping right over "Photostream" and choose "Delete", but nothing happens from this.
    And BTW, I did disable Photostream from all my iOS devices, and my iMac.

    I also have this exact same problem - 35 photos taking up 1.5gb!
    seems like a strange coincidence... and no Matt - this is not the Photo Stream - that is 258mb
    with only a 16gb phone this is a substantial chunk of my storage.
    anyone have a real explanation for this??

    Actually when exactly the shadow copies are getting created? Whether it is during synchronization backup or express full back up or both?
     Please see the below snap. It is disk utilization report of one week for exchange backup. I have configured protection group as every 30 min synchronization backup & every day express full backup for 2 days of retention range.
    So here I want to understand that why there is no any space used for shadow copies though my both backups (synchronization & express full) are running successful.

    If you are using DPM 2012 R2, this is a known issue that will be fixed in the next update. As an alternate, run "vssadmin list shadowstorage" from administrative command prompt.

    I want to use NTBACKUP to make the snapshot.
    Does the database freeze at the moment of the snapshot?
    Does anybody use this method?

    NTbackup uses VSS to create the copy of FILES.
    VSS is not designed to replace your current backup strategy,
    VSS will copy a data file, then another, then another etc - heres the problem sapdata1 and sapdata2 will be backed up at DIFFERENT times. if you tried to restore the DB, it would NOT be consistent.If VSS backed up the files OFFLINE - np, it will work.
    VSS cache is also on the system (default) as the original data - not really a smart idea for a backup solution.
    Use either the SQL tools to backup online to tape/external storage or get the symantec backupexec with the SQL agent to allow for online backups again to tape or nearline storage.

    I remember seeing something called gDisk or something on freemacware.com, but seems like the sofware isnt available anymore. Does any know of an app that can be used like iDisk but using the space available in your gmail or yahoo account?
    I love my .mac account and i hate to let it go, but i just cant afford $100 to renew my subscription at this time.
    So if anyone knows of an application that would run along these lines, please advise.

    Thanks for that, its just what i had in mind...but....
    After playing around with it, i can see why they charge $100 for the iDisk. This application doesnt save directories, so i cant drop complete folders into it like i did with iDisk.
    Anyone else know of any other app that works similar to iDisk?

    Be very careful with what you delete in var. You could leave your system in an unstable state
    for example in HPUX it's not the same thing as to go in there and delete a particular software manually instead of using swremove, swremove uninstalls software the rigth way.

  • What is the "Download All" button at the bottom of my playlist and why when I select it songs begin downloading and take up my storage space? If I don't download them the songs will not play correctly....

    I have activated iTunes match and iCloud, now when I go to my Music app and choose me 'best' playlist, I see a button at the bottom of the list that says download all.  If I choose this option every song in that playlist begins downloading (near 1,000), this is taking up memory on my phone instead of using the cloud.  If i DO NOT download all of the songs they do not play correctly (skipping certain songs, not playing all the way through, etc.)  What's this all about and what can I do about it?  Why are my songs not just playing through iCloud? I thought that was the point.....

    To be honest, you shouldn't need a great 3G service for it to be able to keep up with a song, but if it's a very weak signal then it could be the problem.
    Unless you have unlimited 3G then I would recommend using wi-fi anyway, as you could easily run into monthly limits otherwise.
    Do you think that it works better with wi-fi than 3G, or just the same? If it is the same then I would have to question whether this is actually your problem.
    As to whether you should download songs beforehand, I would say that as a temporary measure it probably makes sense if it's possible as it will download them anyway and that way you get to listen to the music properly. However it does mean that you have to start downloading before you start listening which may be annoying.
    I'd be interested to hear whether the performance is better with wi-fi than 3g though. It could be that I'm barking up the wrong tree.
